Speaking for myself, I like supporting Rivendell and I have bought from
them over many years. I currently have two Rivendell frames, a Toyo and an
MiT. I wish I could have bought more, but I bought what I could afford at
the time. Inevitably, some of the other frames I was interested in slipped
by.

[RBW] Sizing Bike Friday NWT to replicate 54 cm Hunqapillar

2020-01-22 Thread EWBONSELL
I'm sorry if this is a bit off topic, but I noticed that a number of
members of this group also own a Bike Friday.

My favorite ride is my 54 CM Hunqapillar. Unfortunately NJ Transit does
not allow full size bikes on trains during peak commuting hours, so I need
to buy a folding bike. I have decided on Bike Friday and would like to
dial in the fit as close to my Hunqapillar as possible. Bike Friday only
does 73 degree seat tube and head tube angles, so I can't match the
Hunqapillar's 72 degree angles. The open question is the top tube length.
I believe the Hunqapillar has an effective top tube of about 60 cm (nominal
58+ cm). Based upon my measurements, Bike Friday is recommending an
effective top tube length of 54 cm, but I am afraid that will be too
cramped. I am inclined to think the top tube should be somewhere between
56 and 60. If any one reading this has tried to size a Bike Friday to
match their Rivendell ride, I would love to hear about it.

Thanks,
Ernie

Re: [RBW] Of Bikes and Bread

2020-01-22 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
These responses have brought me no small amount of joy today. You are SO fun. I
love the photos (esp. the one with the knife in the head, Drew) and all the
stories. I had no idea how much interest you all have in breads, but I see I am
in good company. My bread is NOT fancy. You can go down the rabbit hole and
learn 357 different tips that will make your bread better. I just do what’s
simple. Mom has a starter her family got from a priest in the 70s, and she
treats hers totally different. She uses flat beer and skim milk to feed her
starter, and her bread is different as a result. It’s really good, but I won’t
keep those ingredients handy just for bread making. But this is very much a
choose your own adventure - go wild!

I got 3 FaceTime calls tonight from E, who was baking his first loaf. I
whooped, “You’re so smart! What did your mother say?” He replied, “She isn’t
home yet; I wanted to surprise her.” Totally overcome, I shrieked, “You
SWEETIE! Does your house smell like fresh bread?” “Kind of,” he said, with a
shy smile.

Man, I love teenagers. Everything is right in my world.

Re: [RBW] Legolas, Bombadil, Saluki

2020-01-22 Thread Joe Bernard
I presume you can get a Roadeo or Saluki (AHH) at those prices because they are
or were existing production models and they can use the names.

Legolas was only a production frame for a very short time; has been semi-custom
ever since; and would now be presented as a Rivendell custom on the downtube. I
don't see any way Riv or Nobilette is going to price that as somehow not a
custom frame. You're ordering a Mark Cyclocross Custom.

If all you care about are the decals then you are probably SOL.

Will a bike with the same design as the Legolas but with a RIVENDELL on the
downtube ride the same as one with a LEGOLAS?

I’m assuming yes.

Yes, original Homer had different geometry. And even when the Homer first
came out, it was available in size 57 and up only, with 700c wheels. I
don't know if this changed later while still keeping the original
geometry.

I, too, would never spend $4,000 on a full custom, but I am intrig by the
fact that you can get standard sizes of some previous models, eg, the
Legolas, for $2,800. As I mentioned in the other thread, however, I am
waiting to see this year's new models before I decide whether to get a
semi-custom.

The slice has held steady so far, those grips are pretty thick and hard to
tear. No squirminess for me, but this is with a bolt-upright riding position on
an e-assist Clem L..I'm not grabbing those grips very hard.

Pretty. Do you fear that slice might elongate? And is it squirmy where it's
cut? Some thin cotton bar tape feels good over those rubber grips, and
would keep it wrangled.

2020-01-22 Thread Benjamin L. Kelley
Funny I had the same thing happen, a couple flats in in a couple of days(I
think like 4 in one week) on RH/Compass Stampede Pass' right after moving
from KC to NYC. After that I switched to gatorskins which are the
anti-supple and suck for gripping anything other than flat and dry
pavement. But I only had 1 flat in 2000km and it was a tiny bit of wire
that worked its way in. These will go away when I finally do my 650b
conversion on the steamroller.
On the Quickbeam I've been running Gravelking SK+ and no issues so far but
only 700km or so on them.

It may be humorous exaggeration now, but when 11 first was introduced,
indeed the only choices were hundred dollar chains and a special three
hundred dollar Campagnolo chain tool (it was Campagnolo or nothing).
And as the saying goes, you only get one chance to make a first impression.

They nerd out on bread and grains (akin to what happens here about bikes)
so I'd bet they'd have answers to the spelt sourdough and other grain/flour

different from modern wheat, so she's puzzling that out. For those looking

[RBW] How & when & why did you find Rivendell? What was your first bike or part from them?

2020-01-22 Thread Lucky
A bike geek since I was 11 or so, I discovered Bridgestone in 1991 when I went
shopping for a mountain bike to take to college. Couldn’t swing the MB-1 I
wanted so I bought a General Pro Shadow.
In the late ‘90’s I attended Interbike for work and bought an Atlantis. (Still
have, many miles and incarnations later) Currently sporting an Albatross bar
because I am older.
In between I was a BOBlist member and have had a variety of BOBish bikes pass
through my hands. By the way I did eventually get that MB-1.
Passing on the Riv/BOB inspired madness to my kid, we’ve built him a
lovely’90’s Rockhopper all-rounder.

[RBW] Re: Advice Needed: Tires

2020-01-22 Thread Bryan Kim
With the understanding that the quality of "suppleness" can be somewhat
personal/subjective, I personally like the ride quality of my Panaracer
Pasela PT tires, especially for a bike you intend to use from time to time.
FWIW, I live in the DMV and run the Paselas on my Bridgestone MB-2 for
rides around the city, on the Capital Crescent Trail, and even on the C&O
towpath - have not flatted yet and the ride quality has been more than
sufficient for all three situations. As a bonus, the cost is relatively low
for these tires.

2020-01-22 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
Mark - also let’s add #clemantics. I love #clemocracy and #imacleminist as
well. This is too funny. Hurry up and build your Clem so you can post photos to
Instagram and join in with the hashtags. Slim Wonder uses #thatclemlife, also
good. Hashtags are great for business - we are gonna grow Rivendell, one Clem
at a time. Yesterday on Insta, Utility Bicycle Works posted a photo of what I
think is a 2019 green Clem. They had this to say about it (and I’m parsing it
for the sake of brevity): “We installed new pads, cables/housing, rear rack,
and made slew of adjustments before blowing the bicycle 67 kisses and sending
it home...Clems ride soft and nimble, like a jet-ski in a pool of Cool Whip.”
I’ve begun to think of Clems as the bread and butter of Rivendell - which may
or may not be true. They hit such a sweet spot in the market - nothing has been
sacrificed in the way of comfort and practicality, they are still beautiful,
and they are less expensive than the fully-lugged models. My husband would have
never bought that 2015 Clem had it been the price of a Sam. My son certainly
wouldn’t be riding a little Rivendell for the same reason. But because the
Clems exist and at such a friendly price, we are practically collecting them. 😬

Carl - I make sourdough pancakes, too! My recipe is similar to your wife’s, but
I’m going to try hers just to see. Does she use whole wheat or white flour?

Got a FaceTime call from E last night - he had a couple intelligent questions
as he was working with his starter. I think his first loaf will be baked today.
Man, if that kid gets good at sourdough his mother is going to have to ration
him. He’s totally nuts about this bread!

[RBW] Legolas, Bombadil, Saluki

2020-01-22 Thread Karl
Now that I have your attention just kidding. I have had a thought
rolling around in my head for some time now, and Grant's latest blog post
about December has pushed me to act. I love all of y'all. I gave up social
media a couple of years ago (someone else does social media for me...wow!
it's amazing) as I seek to find more authentic interactions and friends in
this life. We are an amazing community. We celebrate when others have wins.
We mourn when others go through tough patches in life. We bless others when
we have too much. We also are brave enough to be on the receiving end of
those things when life throws us curves. This is what any community in the
world longs to be. Our "sun" if you would is the beautiful company sitting
outside downtown Walnut Creek who thousands pass every day and have no clue
of the world changing little company tucked in among all of the auto repair
shops. Rivendell and it's people are why we found each other. I am forever
grateful for that, and for each and every one of you.

I could go on, but that brings me to my proposal. I am just as guilty of
buying many things from others who have them for sale including bikes,
frames, and many other parts. What if we offered up a "thank you" every
time we made a transaction in our little community? Just on the honor
system, and just to say thank you for bringing us together. I am going to
begin buying Rivendell gift certificates in the amount of 10% of my sales
or purchases on the list that I will never use. Now, this will not be that
much on a normal basis, but as a small business owner, there are times when
an extra $100 per week helps tremendously. I believe even if we buy
something from Rivendell every time we buy and sell on our little list, we
could make a difference and also allow Grant, Vince, Corey, Will, Mark, and
all of those fine folks know how much they are appreciated, valued, and
loved.

Thank you for reading my little thoughts. I am grateful for all of you and
the way you bless and warm my life.
