[RBW] Why a rear disc on the tandem?

Also a rim brake can get very hot, especially on a large bike with 2 people.

I'm grateful I'm not Bill's size. That Rossin looks delightful, and the
Univega is a STEAL at $500, especially considering the level to which Bill
maintains his stable.

[RBW] Why a rear disc on the tandem?

2020-02-11 Thread Joe Bernard
It's from an era when disc weren't the norm on tandems and that's what Riv was
going for. It's primarily a v-brake bike with what is called a 'drag brake' for
scrubbing off the speed of two people on a big descent. On a long bike with a
rear passenger the rear brake can do a lot more work than on a single, so the
disc makes sense back there instead of stressing the fork.

[RBW] Re: Help me buy a Riv

2020-02-11 Thread Roberta
Also...

Testing the bikes help me decide on the Joe A. So, if you can go to
Rivendell or a dealer that has some built up, it'll be worth the trip, as
masmojo suggested. I drove to the dealer, planning on buying the Sam H.,
but after one lap around the parking log, I realized Joe A was the bike for
me. I had never ridden a Riv prior to trying them at the dealership.

[RBW] Re: Help me buy a Riv

2020-02-11 Thread Roberta
I have a 51 cm Joe Appaloosa (2 3/4 years) and a 54.5 A Homer Hilsen (8
months). 83 PBH and they both fit me great.

Joe is my in city love--wider tires, great ride. I don't worry while
riding in the poorly maintained potholed streets or hitting cracks in the
MUP pavements. I ride the A Home Hilsen mostly on paved paths, but that's
because of the different locations each bike resides. AHH is in the
suburbs. There is a bit more stand over room on the Joe A, so if they
both lived at home and I were to ride in the city, that would be the one
I'd pick--better for quick jump off's, too.

The Joe ride is plush and calming, but it can go fast. The A Homer Hilsen
is spritely and more spirited. And, much lighter.I've ridden a Clem H
and it's closer to the Joe A in ride feel, if you want to save some $$.

However, if I were to buy a bike today and if it would be primarily for
"general around town city build", I'd look at a Cheviot. With a Chev,
you'd get a lighter bike than the Clem L, and the practical-ness of a step
through. If you like pretty, there's a Betty Foy on the board for sale,
the forerunner of the Chev.

Here's the good news: there are no bad decisions. They are all great
bikes.

I'm not a moderator but I've been around since the beginning of RBW Bunch and

[RBW] Re: Raid Bill's Stable: Nine bikes available For Sale

2020-02-11 Thread Bill Lindsay
There's been some interested emails but nothing serious has materialized
yet. The bikes for which there has been zero interest is interesting to
me. Nobody wants a light carbon mountain bike, which is not a big surprise
in this group. I was a little surprised that nobody wants a dialed in
Roadeo, or an Eroica-ready bike, or a 650B road bike for 1/5th the price of
a typical MUSA Saluki. I guess Eroica bikes and 650B conversions are fun
because they are projects.

I think the 650B Rossin is a really sweet bike. Standard diameter tubing.
Pretty thinned lugs without being flamboyant. Classic robins egg blue.
Timeless 2x6 friction drivetrain. Low Q classic cranks in 172.5mm. It's
really close to perfect. It took P-clamps to get fenders on, so that's a
mark against it. Here's an album:

[RBW] Trangia fuel in California?

2020-02-11 Thread Roger
Looks like California is tightening up on VOC’s and has caused denatured
alcohol to be taken off hardware store shelves.
What are affected people using to fuel their Trangias now?

[RBW] WTB: crankarms or crankset 170mm with 110 / 74 BCD - Sugino, Specialized "Flags", Velo Orange, or anything silver

2020-02-11 Thread Joe Bernard
Yes I'm the short cranks guy around here and I think you ALL are pushing cranks
way too long unless you're on a singlespeed trying to climb Mt. Diablo
which...why would you do that??

I don't have any in the stash to sell, but I recommend looking for shorter than
170 to solve your knee issues. At 5'-7" (short legs, long torso) I use 155 and
152 on regular bikes, 145 on my e-assist Clem.

You can find Sugino 165 lots of places, and I've also found an XD600 in 152cm.
If you want to spend $50 and can live with 130/74 BCD rings to experiment,
search Origin8 cranks that come in a bunch of lengths starting at 145mm. Save
the knees, ride shorty!

[RBW] WTB: crankarms or crankset 170mm with 110 / 74 BCD - Sugino, Specialized "Flags", Velo Orange, or anything silver

2020-02-11 Thread Pancake
Summary: Looking to experiment with shorter crankarms to see if it helps
with some knee pain. I'd like to stick to Sugino XD2 / XD600 compatible
crankarms so they'll be interchangeable with my other cranksets and
chainrings.

Details:
My legs are short relative to my upper body, and one leg is shorter than
the other. Two of my bikes have 175mm crank arms (Hillborne 56cm and
Cheviot 60cm), one has 172.5mm (Rosco Baby medium). I know it'll be hard to
tell much of a difference with the small change, but I've been having some
knee pain while riding and this is my next component to try adjusting to
see if it helps. My legs are different lengths (right is 11mm longer than
left) according to x-rays taken when I needed knee surgery about 6 years
ago. I've seen that difference called measurable leg length discrepancy
(mlld). Apparently this is quite hard to measure (even with x-rays where
they measure the bone lengths and add up the different), and it's different
from functional leg length since our soft tissue makes up some of the
difference. I use an extra shoe insole insert on the left to make up some
of the difference, but it's maybe 2mm taller which isn't much.

I know it's a long shot that this would be my fix, but I'm also just
curious to try shorter crankarms to see if it gives me a better ride
separate from the knee pain and leg length difference.

Options I've found include the Sugino sets above, Specialized "Flag" or 99
or Strongarm cranks, some VO cranksets and arms, and I'm sure there are
others. I'm in the SF Bay Area and would be happy to pick up from Sonoma /
Napa area to Oakland and anywhere in between. Otherwise, I'd pay for
shipping.

Joe Benard and I may have talked about this a while ago but I think I
dropped the ball and didn't follow up?

Thanks for any options (and opinions, suggestions),
Abe "walks funny" in Napa

2020-02-11 Thread Shoji Takahashi
Hi Graham,
I'd also consider the A. Homer Hilsen. I've had it set up in many different
ways: Albatross, Moustache/Albastache, drop bars... presently wearing
bullmoose.

I have dynamo lights (rear secula on the chainstay; front IQ-X) and Mark's
rack on front w/basket. It's a versatile bike, and great for general riding
around. It's not as heavily built as and is faster than the Hunqapillar.

Good luck!

Yeah, you can easily find these at any well-stocked hardware store! You want to
make sure the hole you drill isn’t too big, otherwise they’ll be prone to
falling out. I suggest getting a little Loctite to keep them secure as well.

2020-02-11 Thread David Bivins
I will second Erik's description. Two caveats: drill somewhere where you
you don't mind metal shavings and can clean up (like the floor of a
workshop). The dining room table isn't appropriate, or at least that's what
my partner tells me. Second, they are REALLY grippy. I had some shoes with
smooth rubber soles, and the grips chewed them up a bit. Not a big deal,
but good to know.
I haven't regretted doing it at all - definitely made them much
safer-feeling in the rain!

Hey Jason,

I thought they used to have a video on their website on how to add screws
to their Grip Kings, but maybe not. I couldn't find one just now. I did
this about a year ago and it's pretty simple-- just use a drill with a
3/32" bit, drill through the holes/pockets where you want the screws, then
screw 'em in! I was nervous to take a drill to my pedals, but it all worked
out fine. I believe I put 8 per side, 4 front/4rear. Very, very grippy. I
was trying to mimic the grip of some Race Face Chester pedals

 I
have on another bike and it worked great.

Best of luck!

Based on your criteria and their current lineup, the Atlantis, Cheviot or
Appaloosa would all work very well.

Clem, is good, but it is more of a workhorse; good for carrying "stuff". Fun,
but my impression is you desire something a little zippier.

If you are within an hours drive of Rivendell HQ I'd suggest a visit. It if you
are traveling to the Bay Area on business, a couple hour side trip via the BART.

[RBW] Re: 650b 2.2–2.4 CITY tire recommendations* *Also: Is a tire dead when it has tiny holes from glass?

2020-02-11 Thread Justin Kennedy (Brooklyn, NY)
Bob,

Not sure how wide they go in 650b size, but I've been running 700x50mm
Panaracer Gravel King SKs on my Chev for the last 8 months commuting ~15
miles daily in NYC (mostly Brookyn with lots of glass and other city
detritus). I've only had one flat and it was a weird phantom flat (not
puncture) where the tire wasn't keeping enough pressure but not going
entirely flat either. (Could've been a defective tube as I couldn't find
any puncture after removing it.) Before the Gravel Kings, I had Continental
Sport Contact II (what Riv calls the basketball tire) and was happy with
those (only one puncture flat in a year or so).

Again different size tire, but I have Kenda Kranium 26"x2.1 on my Xtracycle
conversion and have been happy with those so far. Much less daily use,
however, so can't quite vouch for their longevity just yet.

I've been told that D use thick paint that isn't flattering on classic lugged

2020-02-11 Thread Hayden
My PBH height is 85-86cm. I really enjoy the fit of this bike The standover
currently sits at 33” with the 700 x 42mm Shikoros on it.

The largest tires I fit on to this bike with the 700 wheels are the Soma
Cazaderos 42mm with the slight knobs and all. I have never attempted any
fenders since I live in Los Angeles.

I believe the frame was built in 2013.

[RBW] Help me buy a Riv

2020-02-11 Thread Graham McCall
I’m currently trying to decide what Riv to buy for a general around town city
build. Plan would be upright bars, front rack and dynamo build.

I’d like something that isn’t specifically designed around carrying a ton of
stuff. I’d prefer something fun to ride then be built to carry the kitchen sink.

What frames have people built up this way that feel great?

I was thinking a Joe, Homer, etc. I also love the Clem, but haven’t ridden any
Riv.

Thanks!

[RBW] Re: 650b 2.2–2.4 CITY tire recommendations* *Also: Is a tire dead when it has tiny holes from glass?

2020-02-11 Thread Bill Schairer
I inspect my tires much more frequently than I used to and often am picking
various debris out of them that have not yet caused a puncture. I’ve come to
the conclusion that many flats are caused not by what I just ran over but by
something I ran over yesterday that has finally worked itself through.
Secondly, are you sure you have remove the cause of the flats from the tire so
that it cannot cause another?

2020-02-11 Thread donavanm
A late update with two datapoints. I have a simpleone and silver quickbeam.
Havent noticed a difference in clearance. QB has WTB 40mm nanoraptors on i19
crisscross rims, SO ive done 38 gravelkings and 36mm MSO x’plors under
fenders. Both setups have comfortable amount of clearance, but fenders over the
nanoraptors were *real* tight.

[RBW] Adding spikes to MKS Grip Kings

2020-02-11 Thread Jason D
It looks like Riv is sold out of the pedal spikes, but I'm guessing I can
find them at the hardware store -
https://www.rivbike.com/collections/pedals/products/pedal-spikes-32. I'm
curious if anyone has done this? If so do you have any tips or tricks or is
it so easy a caveman can do it? (The caveman in this scenario being me.)

Love all of your builds Jason! The XO is looking very proper, are those
Crust bars?

It sounds like we've followed similar paths- I was very involved with early
watercooled VW's in the early 2000's down here in Seattle. Put a MK2 GTi on
airride and dual Weber carbs. I miss working on cars sometimes but I like
wrenching on bikes more!

Re: [RBW] Re: daily post ur riv

2020-02-11 Thread MoVelo
Bruce

Thanks.

Yes the Ram is a 650 conversion which was pretty easy given the long reach
brake calipers. I've had this bike for approximately 10 years now, and it
has had many different set ups. The Ram is better on gravel as the tires
are 42s with 35s on the Legolas and with the BB is a bit lower feels more
stable than the Legolas.

The Legolas I've had for only three years and am still sorting it out. It
is a racing bike and is just a bit quicker than the Ram when turning. I
think I need a few more years to fully compare the two, but at this point I
feel more a part of the Ram as opposed to sitting on the Legolas, if that
makes any sense.

The crank of the Ram is 172.5 while the Legolas is 170, which doesn't seem
to be enough to make a noticeable difference to me.

The cockpit components of the Legolas are a mix of Sram Rival, Red and XX.
The Ram's components are all Ultegra. I do prefer the Sram over the
Shimano. The Sram feels a bit more racey while the Shimano feels more
substantial.

My intent has been to find a new home for the Ram but I still like it so
much I am waffling on selling it.

They are both fantastic bikes, fit well and are a joy to ride. The only
other bike I have had that compares in ride quality to these two is my 68
Schwinn Paramount, and I've owned a few lugged steel bikes over the years.

Cheers

James
