[RBW] Let's Get Claudia Lopez an El Clem

2020-05-03 Thread Ian A
Cool photo. Sra Lopez Hernandez is a Green Party politician and the bicycle,
which is painted green, is (re) decaled "Bogota" and also shows her website
address.

Probably not her favourite bicycle, but well suited for official duties.

She'd probably quite at home on a Rodeo as much as a Clem...such is the
national passion in Colombia for cycling.

I rode my bicycle around Colombia in 2010 and a number of times was stopped by
motorcyclists and car drivers who just wanted to chat and offer me Coca Cola
and food. It's a great country to be a cyclist.

IanA in not quite so friendly Alberta Canada.

2020-05-03 Thread Andrew Huston
I bought them with hopes that they would work. I don't typically like a
long reach and they ended up being about perfect for me. Not super upright
but definitely not stretched. Handling was great. If Riv offers it again,
the bull moose would be a great spec.

[RBW] Re: Rock n' Road Tires on a Sam Hillborne

2020-05-03 Thread Damien
Currently have them on my 51 Sam.

They're a bit loud on pavement but don't really feel that slow, and I
certainly don't mind it. They've been great on trails, singletrack and
gravel. I'd recommend them.

I have also had Snoqualmie Pass' on another bike of mine and they rode
s nice. Surprisingly comfy on gravel, but they're definitely a smooth
tread so keep that in mind if you need some bite. I always worried about
puncturing or flatting, but it never happened once.

That's what I thought, but it seemed like the talk was breaking down between
"the new" Cheviot and Leah's "Fancy Cheviot". And then discussion of it having
a new name seemed to indicate it was going to be something of a departure from
the old, but based on the photo it seems to be more of a refinement than a
totally new thing, so . . . .
New name? I don't care, but please not something silly. It's hard enough to get
our local police to take Bicycle theft seriously; just try telling them that in
addition to your bike being stolen, it was called a Roscoe Bubbe. Even worse
trying to convince them that said Roscoe Bubbe was worth $2,700.
Pause to wait for them to stop laughing . . . . 

Who knows? My initial impression (not sure why, maybe the title of the thread)
lead me to believe the bike she had wasn't very good, but on closer inspection
it would appear to actually be easily as nice as a Clem.
Also, based on her location and the muddiness of her tires, I would say her

doesn't fit her very well. Could just be the angle/pose.

[RBW] Re: Going from Sam (60cm to New Atlantis (59cm) - asking the unaskable: how will the New Atlantis feel?

2020-05-03 Thread Steve Cole
JP,

I've been meaning to add my two cents to this thread and hopefully be
helpful to you. I own a Toyo (2007) A. Homer Hilsen (59 cm) and an MIT
Atlantis (55 cm). I've taken the time to ride both in the last week in an
effort to appreciate/zero in on the differences. Before talking about the
rides, however, it would probably be helpful if I described the builds.

Both bikes have similar builds, although the Atlantis has a slightly more
upscale bulid with a Shimano XT drivetrain while the AHH has a Shimano
Deore drivetrain. The Atlantis has a better crankset (MIddleburn), bottom
bracket (SKF), and headset (Cane Creek). The AHH has standard Riv
components in these areas. Both have Paul brakes -- centerpull on the AHH,
Motolites on the Atlantis. The AHH has Velocity Atlas rims with Rene Herse
Barlow Pass EL 38 x 700c tires; the Atlantis has Velocity Quill rims with
tubeless Rene Herse Antelope Hill EL 55 x 700c tires. Both bikes have
Nitto Bullmoose handlebars. While the Atlantis has several upgrades, i
don't think they actually affect the rides of the two bikes in any very
noticeable way. No doubt the different tire sizes contribute to any
difference. Finally, both have Berthoud saddles, Aspin on the Atlantis,
Aravis on the AHH.

I bought the Atlantis new recently hoping -- expecting -- it would become
my one bike. I expected to be selling my AHH and my Simpleone. The jury
is still out. Since i received the Atlantis in early March, I've ridden it
the most. The ride, as many have described, is very forgiving. It takes
both pavement and dirt extremely well, perhaps just a bit better than the
AHH. I have not noticed any Atlantis handling issues. It tracks very well
taking corners as well as the AHH. It goes exactly where I want it to go.
As others have noted, I'm the heaviest part of either ride, so the modest
additional weight of the Atlantis is only slightly noticeable.

So, why am I at sixes and sevens with respect to making the Atlantis my one
bike? When I get on the AHH, it still seems nearly perfect for most of the
riding I do, which is on pavement. When it's on dirt, it does not handle
quite as well as the Atlantis. Still I love the AHH, in some ways have
thought of it as the best Rivendell has designed. And it is beautiful -- I
love the blue color. And, while Grant swears their is no difference
between Toyo, and Waterford AHhs, in my head I feel the Japanese builders
understand steel and brazing in their souls.

So, I will keep the AHH for now. I will ride both, although the Atlantis
will get dibs most days, And, the Simpleone will soon be offered to others.

I hope this is helpful. Let me know if I can add any more..

[RBW] Re: 32 days of bicycling: bosque ride

2020-05-03 Thread Garth

Yeah, every area has it's own beauty Patrick it's all to easy to see
someone else photos and come down with a case of comparitis ... hah silly
stuff ! I was only to ABQ for a short time in winter once, and a short
time in Santa Fe once and yes the endless sky and the colors like
no other. I can feel the arid heat from here. I'm rather blah-ed out with
rain myself, effin' rain rain rain seemingly every day. The other day the
so called "forecast" called for partly cloudy skies, and radar was all
clear as I left home. Fifteen minutes later I'm in the midst of a heavy
drenching mist, like one of those misting shower heads that soaks you
instantly with a very fine stream, and it wasn't going away anytime soon.
Hardy har har . some NM sunshine sounds wonderful.

I still prefer to put photos on my pc and attach them from there because I
can.

[RBW] PSA: Bridgestone Le BUBster 43L in NJ

2020-05-03 Thread masmojo
Wow, I totally didn't remember those at all!
Unfortunately it's too small for anyone in my family that doesn't already have
a bike.
Next time I run across my Bstone catalog I'll have to look for that.
At that point I already had an XO-1 & I was racing mountain bikes so
something kind cruisery would have not jumped out at me.
Funny, thing is as wheelbases have gotten longer I did go through a stage of
looking at "ladies" mountain bikes on Ebay, but most of these old MBs are
designed for lower shorter head tubes and slacker HT and seat angles.
Still, I dig that.

Re: [RBW] Re: Fancy Cheviot!

2020-05-03 Thread masmojo
I guess one thing I am not clear on; is this Fancy Cheviot a new model (hence a
different name) or is it going to replace the current model entirely (which was
my assumption)?
In other words will there be a regular Cheviot & a fancy Cheviot.?

[RBW] Re: Atlas stout enough rim for Gus/Susie?

2020-05-03 Thread Garth

I had hoped the Riv rim once mentioned for the Hillybikes would be
available *before/with* the frames arrival. Otherwise I'll do either a
Cliffhanger or the DM24, since I do use tubes. I'm not sure what tire I'll
get first, but it will be at least a 2.25-2.4, it depends on the tire
really. I didn't order a Susie so much for the extra width tires, but for
the quite tall head tube and it was a bright shiny Orange, like a fresh
glass of liquid Sunshine poured and cured on the frame. Plus, I like the
swoopy top tube appearance.

I'm sure if you asked Velocity about the Atlas on a bike that rides a
2.25-2.8" tire they'd recommend the Cliffhanger instead.

For Deacon Patrick, do you have any issues mounting and dismounting your
tires(any tire you've tired) with tubes on the Cliffhangers ?

[RBW] Re: Atlas stout enough rim for Gus/Susie?

2020-05-03 Thread Ash
+1 for Cliffhangers. I'm going with those for the Susie I'm waiting on.

I have had both Atlas and Cliffhangers on my previous Rivs. Atlas is super
solid as well. I had 2.0" tires on them. Never had any problem even with
some loaded rides. If I already had a pair of Atlas I'd use them. Since
I'm ordering a new set, I'm going with Cliffhangers.. because why not! The
weight difference is hardly noticeable. Cliffhangers work great for
tubeless too.
