[RBW] Re: Dyno Light Mounting w/ junction box

2020-05-14 Thread Corwin
Hi -

I had Peter White put a Y-junction back downstream of my Edelux II
headlight. If you scroll down through the blug
to "Corwin's Tandem", you can see the Y junction in the photo of the bars
and front rack - about six inches or so behind the headlight. The
Y-Junction can basically be mounted wherever you want. My Y-junction allows
me to run a wire back to the stoker bars for a Sinewave Revolution to
charge my wife's phone (also captured in a photo of the stoker bars on the
blug). If I were you, I would place the Y-Junction on the fork, and run the
wire from the junction up to the handlebars for your charger.

Namaste,

Corwin

I went up from 130 to 135 and I think I did have mine redished by Rich. I
think it may be dependent on the freewheel cog number you want to run and
the frame sizing jump up or down that determines that. It's been a few
years now so I can't recall really.

I take refuge in the 'maybe' part of that rule.
I'm not a mechanic, I'm a hobbyist. My bike tinkering used to be largely
due to having non-standard ideas for bike setup, and then it was due to
being fairly poor, and now I just like it.

You do need to surrender ego when you step off the edge into the unknown.
And again when you're doing stuff "you know how to do."
I'm always prepared to go down to the shop afterward and say, "Hey. Funny
story. See this?"

Re: [RBW] Best 1 - 11 setup

2020-05-14 Thread Patrick Moore
BTW, I will not criticize anyone who wants to put a 32 X 10-50 on a road
bike; do whatever is the most fun. I certainly have some weird drivetrains.
But I thought someone ought to point out that perhaps you don't need such a
high high or low low for such a bike, and that you might want smaller than
10" jumps between the most common cruising gears.

Re: [RBW] Best 1 - 11 setup

2020-05-14 Thread Patrick Moore
I'm curious why you need a 46 or 42 t cog on a bike built to be a fast road
bike, especially in DC (I lived and rode there). I would think you'd sorely
miss closer ratios in the middle gears, no? The first 11 sp cassette meant
for a single ring that I could find was this one for a 42 t ring:
10,12,14,16,18,21,24,28,32,36,42

That's a drop from 84" 74" to 65" to 56" which would be fine on a mountain
bike for steep singletrack, but IMO, deadly on a road bike (I'm assuming a
28" diameter wheel for a true 35 mm tire, but the gaps would be very
similar for skinnier tires.)

Actually, the jumps aren't as big as I had feared, but they're still pretty
big for a fast road bike.

And that's a 117" high, which IMO is pretty high even for a fast road bike
unless you are racing.

Even if you will be carrying heavy-ish loads* into headwinds up the hills I
am familiar with in NW Washington, I can't see needing anything lower than
say a gear in the 40s; let's say 40". I'm not familiar with 1X drivetrains,
but to take my dirt road-road bike as an example, if you have a 42 t ring
and 32 mm tires, that would mean a cog of about 30 t: 42/30 X 28" wheel =
39". That's a lot lower than I use for everyday riding in rolling terrain
even with grocery loads on my road bike, and I'm 65 and hardly super fit.
Now a long ride for me is 40 miles (it is indeed up from 30!), but at least
for that distance, in merely rolling terrain without a heavy load, I can't
see using anything below 40 gi -- I can't see using even that, frankly. My
dirt road bike bottoms out at 50" in the 42 ring, and at 33" in the 28 t
ring (25 t cog).

My road bike for dirt roads is set up as a 1X 10 with bailout ring (42/28 X
13-25 10 speed) and while I realize most people aren't as fussy as I about
close gaps in the middle range, I can't imagine

* Since my errand road bike is unavailable, I've been using my gofast road
bike for carrying groceries; 20.32 lb exactly today in a Camper Longflap on
the Joe Starck custom, 76" fixed gear, no hills but certainly a headwind.

[RBW] Re: Best 1 - 11 setup

2020-05-14 Thread Adam in Indiana
I'll third the Microshift/SLX drivetrain... I've used it on two different
frames now. Currently have it on a Gevenalle/TRP brake lever, and used it as a
bar-end on my Hillborne. I used it in friction mode then, and got pretty good
at it, but the index mode is always there as a fallback.

2020-05-14 Thread Brendan Willard in SF
I'll second the SLX/Microshift 11-46 setup. I had that on My Velo Orange
Piolet. Indexing on the Microshift sometimes got in between positions, but
could be fine tuned with more/less tension on the shifter screw. I'm
running a 1x11 White Industries ENO 34t to a SRAM XO1 & XT 11-46 cassette
on my Travelers Check, but that is with Bullmoose Bars and a XO1 thumb
shifter- really happy with it. Planning to do an Ultegra brake/shifter to
Tanpan to SLX with 11-46 on a Black Mountain Road+ I'm building. I'll let
you know!

[RBW] Best 1 - 11 setup

2020-05-14 Thread Wyatt
Can’t say I know the best, but I recently set up a 1x11 drive train with a
Microshift bar end, SLX rear derailleur, and SLX 11-46 rear cassette. Loved it,
especially once I got the hang of running it friction and doing smooth double
or triple shifts. Plenty of range, though I’d probably run a chainring bigger
than 38t next time. Was fairly cheap and light enough, too. Had to leave that
frame behind in Indonesia in the middle of this whole thing, but plan to set up
that same drivetrain again in the not too distant future.

Curious to hear what other 1x11 drivetrains people hang put together, too.

[RBW] Best 1 - 11 setup

2020-05-14 Thread Robert Gardner
Hi folks --

I am retooling my drive train on my Roadini -- this will be my "fast bike"
and potentially used in whatever we are calling rando rides these days
(pending any actual group rides happening again).

Looking for suggestions on a 1-11 drivetrain -- 11-46? 11-42? I'm in DC, so
will be riding some hills, some flats, but nothing too crazy. Not sure if
I'm going to go Herse or White Industries, so I'd love thoughts there as
well. And, that little thing called a derailleur. I will be using a bar end
shifter.

I'm assuming you all have very definite thoughts, so please treat me kindly
in this thread.

Indeed David, this is happening as we speak. The cables/housing are on
their normal sides, then they cross over in front of the headtube (with
room to spare, I cut the housing long) to reach the swapped shifters. All
good 👍

Joe,
If you set this up to have two shifters and you keep the rear shifter on
the left, cross the housings in front of the head tube and keep the wires
on their respective sides of the down tube. They won't interfere with the
paint or the 3rd water bottle bosses and the routing will keep the housings
away from the head tube. It's an ideal situation for that configuration!
(If they don't fight the brake cables, interfere with a bag, etc.)
I use Steve's rubber sleeves, too, on head tubes. They have a slit for
installation and can go on anywhere without disconnecting cables. (JagWire?)
Also, get some helicopter tape for places where there may be some
occasional rubbing and as a chain slap guard.

[RBW] Re: Fancy Cheviot!

2020-05-14 Thread Roberta
Hi, Kiley.

As I recall, your Chev was the 60 size and you found it too heavy when
picking it up to lift over gates or fences or such. You might want to
review the pics of the current 60 size with the Orange Nu-Chev (could that
be N-ewe Cheviot, get it???) to see if the top tube is lower Or, ask
Riv. I'm pretty sure that the sizing chart on their site is the one that's
been there for years. I'm not sure if that will be the same sizing chart
for the N-ewe Cheviot (I hope they don't actually call it that, but it's
pretty cute for here).

If I'm in the middle pbh for my size (83pbh, I'm assuming 55), I'll be
getting one. I think I'm in the same decade of life as you and picking up
is important. I'll be having James at Analog build mine up "light." You
might want to do something similar (lighter saddle, wheels, tubeless, alum
handlebars, 1x) to make my entire bike riding/ownership experience
better. There's another thread about it. Bicycle Belle Ding Ding or Joe
started it, perhaps a month ago.

[RBW] In Praise of RBW

2020-05-14 Thread Steve Cole

Everyone I know knows what I think about Rivendell Bikes – I have three and
my wife has (had) one. When I first learned about these bikes and Grant’s
philosophy, it was as if I had found my cycling home. No other bikes every
seemed as wonderful.

As a daily reader and occasional contributor to RBW Owners Bunch, I know
there are many others who share my affection for Riv Bikes. I have never
taken the time, however, to talk about R BW and the staff. An event of
this week makes me want now more than ever to sing RBW’s praises.

Over the years, I’ve had many occasions to interact with RBW staff, mostly
over the phone. Once, while visiting my daughter and her family in the Bay
Area, I went out to Walnut Creek, a kind of pilgrimage. Grant gave me the
kind of personal attention I am certain he – and Will, and Mark, and Vince
and all the staff – gives every visitor whether a first-timer like myself
or a regular.

This week. My grandson is just beginning to cycle – he’s been practicing
on the flat top of a parking garage. On Monday, I loaded my wife’s Betty
Foy onto the roof of our car and headed over to the parking garage where
she planned to ride with my grandson. The entrance to the garage is on the
top level and we drove in – or tried to. Regrettably, there is a bar over
the entrance that restricts the height of vehicles entering. There was no
sign and I did not notice the bar. I ran into it and Betty was knocked off
the roof. Initially, it seemed like the most serious damage was to the
stem. It was bent pretty badly. Otherwise, everything seemed like it
could be put back together.

After replacing the headset, I went to install the fork. Ughh! The top of
the threaded section on the steerer had broken off. My first thought was
to reach out to Bilenky to see whether they could remove the steerer tube
from the fork and weld on a new one. A lightbulb went off and some dim
memories of RBW selling just forks suggested I reach out to see whether
they might have a spare. I called and spoke with Vince. I took the
measurements he asked for. Within 10 minutes, he called to let me know
they had a replacement – and to cushion the blow and lessen my guilt, it
was already painted in Betty Foy blue with the red mustache on the fork
crown. Vince sent it out the same day.

What can I say. What other company would even have spare forks for a
nearly 10-year old bike, much less one that is already painted and will fit
perfectly?

RBW – and especially Vince – I remain a devoted follower!

I can say that the tread pattern on my 26x2.35" is different on the one I

[RBW] Susie Tire suggestions?

2020-05-14 Thread David Wadstrup
I've got a Susie frameset on the way and am already in possession of a
beautiful set of Cliffhanger/WI MI5 wheels. I'm uncertain, though, of
which tires to choose. I'd prefer tan sidewalls, if possible, and would
like a 2.6 width(since I'll be running a 2x drivetrain.) I've been looking
at Teravail's offerings, but don't know anyone who's personally used them.
Does anyone here have any firsthand knowledge? I'm looking at either the
Honcho or the new Kessel.

This bike will be dedicated to riding trails. I am not an overly
aggressive rider, but I do want a performance oriented tire, if you know
what I mean. I live in the Northeast and am looking for stability and
safety while riding sometimes muddy and wet-rooted trails. I'm a big fan
of Schwalbe's tires and thought the Hans Dampf would be an appropriate 2nd
choice(or first choice?) if the Teravails weren't recommended. But sadly,
their new "skinwall" versions don't aesthetically appeal to me. What do
you think -- Tervail Honcho or Kessel or Schwalbe something or other?

Thanks for your advice!

I decided to live with the Kwick Nine on my Clem H. I just exert the same

If I need to get somewhere faster, I use my Road Standard which has Compass

[RBW] Re: Schwalbe’s Big Apple is a 10-year old tire design. What’s a newer/better alternative?

2020-05-14 Thread Chris L
I have the Maxxis Torch 29'ers on my Hunqapillar and the thought of
swapping them out for the 60mm Big Apples I have hanging on the wall never
once crossed my mind. And I like the Big Apples. I just like the Torch
more.

I can't vouch for durability because I don't put on a lot of miles and the
miles I do ride are pretty much optimal road conditions (ie, very clean).

Also, of the four pairs of Schwalbe tires I've owned, three had a tire with
a wobble in it, which drives me absolutely nuts, so I'm very leery of ever
buying a Schwalbe tire.

I probably will eventually buy the Rene Hearse Antelope Hill or Snoqualmie
Pass tires, just to satisfy my curiosity. I do worry about durability and
flat protection, even on the new Endurance models.

2020-05-14 Thread Eric Daume
Though they have their fans, I've found BA's to be fairly slow and plodding
on the few bikes I've tried them on.

That said, they're worlds better than the stock Kwik Nines that come on the
Clem. Those are particularly awful tires. Sometimes I wake up at night in a
cold sweat, after a nightmare that I was forced to ride Kwik Nines.

I recently put a Maxxiss Grifter on the back of my Jones, after the bead on
the Schwalbe Super Moto (pre-Big One) broke. The Maxxiss seems to roll
pretty well, and has a bit of tread.

Panaracer Gravel Kings (they have smooth versions) and the Soma Supple
tires also work well, IME.

[RBW] Re: Schwalbe’s Big Apple is a 10-year old tire design. What’s a newer/better alternative?

2020-05-14 Thread Nick Payne
I just installed a Schwalbe Marathon Almotion 700x55 on a rear wheel. It
hasn't been there long enough to offer any option on longevity, but it
seems pretty tough, well made, was easy to install (I didn't need tyre
levers), has no perceptible wobble or runout once inflated, and from what
I've read, the rolling resistance is pretty low. The sizing is pretty
spot-on as well - it measured 54mm when first inflated, which means that
after a couple of weeks it probably is a genuine 55mm. As a rear, I run it
at 35psi, which seems about right.

Schwalbe make this model in a couple of different versions - this one says
"Evolution TLE" on the sidewall, which I think means their best casing and
that it can be run tubeless, though I'm using it with a Maxxis ultralight
tube.
