What I’m curious about is what results one with get with other lubes applied in
the same manner as NSF. Can’t wait for your report, Patrick. Of course I can
always try myself. Count me skeptical of any magic in NSF but I am intrigued.

Thank the Lord for our right to choices! But there are certainly many regarding
Canons, maybe too many. Here's one I made fairly recently-

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1321345-REG/canon_eos_m5_mirrorless_digital.html

Not that I'd want to push you towards that one, I'd get the M6 if I could, but
I decided to be a parent and that put the kabosh on any spending outside of
what's generally necessary (bike excesses are my indulgence), but having 30
shots of my kids looking somewhere else besides the camera versus only 3 has
cemented my love for Canon.

Hi Andy. Thanks for the comparison. I've been commuting by bike for about
the same timespan, including on a Clem. For the last 5-6 years, my commute
has been 5-7 miles each way. I commute in most weather. It gets humid and
hot here in the Hudson Valley in the summer months. I maybe ride a tad
slower, but really, as soon as I arrive, pow, the sweat just materializes.
Oh well. I change my undershirt and clean up a bit with a damp towel. The
chance to ride in on a beautiful summer morning completely outweighs any
worry about sweat.

So clever to create this dual personality for bikes that are essentially

Re: [RBW] Hot Waxing Chains

2020-06-05 Thread Michael Hechmer
Deacon, do you actually own chain saw? I owned a chain saw for many years,
decades actually. Then one day I looked down and noticed that I still had
to legs and two hands and decided I would sell my chainsaw while I was
ahead. I still own many dangerous tools, including a 3HP table saw, a tool
which maims an American every seven minutes, but a chain saw, no thank you.

[RBW] Commuting on a Clem vs. an electric bike

2020-06-05 Thread ANDREW ALLEN ERMAN
Dear all, I hope you are weathering the many and terrible challenges facing
our country at the present time. I am always thankful for bikes but more
so now. It is good to have something in one's life, that one loves.
Grant's essay on the racial inequities regarding biking hit a nerve. I
guess being privileged can mean taking things for granted, like being able
to ride a bike and not worrying about being singled out because of how I
look. I digress. I have commuted to work for the past 31 years. Several
years ago I got tired of changing my clothes when I got to work and when I
left, so I bought an electric bike (a Stromer ST2). My ride was faster. I
did not sweat. I could wear my work clothes to work (no need to change my
clothes). I have logged around 6000 miles on the Stromer. I have no
complaints about this bike. It has been reliable and does the job. A
while ago, I set my Clem up for commuting or carrying groceries or
whatever. When the weather was cold (a relative concept, as I live in Los
Angeles), I decided to try commuting on the Clem. My commute is 4 miles
each way. I have been riding it ever since and my Stromer has sat largely
unused. So here are the pros and cons as I see it, between commuting with
these 2 bikes:

*Stromer pros:*
Fast (up to 28 to 30 mph, if I work hard, usually cruise in the low 20s)
No to little sweating
Comfortable (seat and front suspension)

*Stromer cons:*
Doesn't quite feel like a regular bike - there is always a little
undefinable something (weight, moment of drag, not sure what it is)
Changing a rear flat is a MAJOR hassle as this is a rear hub motor and
removing the wheel is more difficult - I use Marthon Plus tires and
thankfully have had only one flat in the years I have owned the bike
The bike is very heavy (a. 60 lb.) so transporting on a trunk mounted bike
rack is more of a challenge

*Clem pros:*
Comfortable (more than the Stromer, probably because I am going slower and
perhaps because of the long wheel base)
I get to enjoy the scenery more as I am going slower

*Clem cons:*
I am back to riding in bike shorts and T-shirt and changing my clothes at
work

Overall, I enjoy the riding experience of the Clem more. It feels more
like a bike, which funny enough, it is. I am enjoying the low tech-ness of
the Clem. I look at the Clem (which is parked in my office) and I enjoy
the view. I did not do that with the Stromer.

I will probably ride the Stomer when it gets very hot. For now, I am on
the Clem. However, I am subject to change, like the weather.

My best to you all.

Andy

2020-06-05 Thread Will Rhea
Hi Lithocarpus,

I recognize that gate in the first photo - that's where the dirt connector
from behind the monastery on Redwood Rd spits out onto Partrick Rd up near
the top. Do you ever ride that? Technically private property (I think)
but it's mighty remote from people (and the hiker gate was open) so I
thought, game on... Beastly steep but I had to see it myself.

Still on the lookout for nice, remote-ish dirt roads and trails in the Napa
area that are legal to ride. Seems like all the stuff I see and want to
ride is on vineyard property. Even some of the roads I thought were open
(like Gehricke Rd in Sonoma) are gated. Any suggestions?

[RBW] Camera Suggestions

I've no longer a mobile phone, which means I've also no longer the camera I'd
been using or the timer and burst mode app that I used with it.

Ideas for quality digital adventure camera that has good value? I'm using a
Panasonic point and shoot for now, but the self timer is very limited. Ideally,
a timer would allow for a burst of 10 or so photos and a delay of up to 20 or
30 seconds.

Thanks!

2020-06-05 Thread Patrick Moore
I recall Velouria/Constance from Lovely Bicycle speaking about the heat in
-- is it Northern Ireland where she lives? -- at any rate, it was in the
mid 60s, so damned hot!

I meant to add in the post that I wore one of my thrift store Hawaiian
shirts. I generally dislike riding in baggy shirts -- when you are riding
into a big hot headwind with a single gear and no power to spare, you
resent any effort lost to wind drag. But I wore one today, and I have to
say that thin rayon, baggy, untucked, is just heads and shoulders more
comfortable in at least high and dry heat than cotton or anything else,
including (IME) seersucker. Too bad so many Hawaiian shirts are so ugly.

One more satisfied customer, I guess! NFS is the one lube that from reports
I would consider using in place of Molten Speed Wax. Must get around to
buying some.

Question to you sandy/dusty/silty surface riders: I'd be interested to hear
how NFS performs in dry conditions of this sort. I'm talking about the sort
of surfaces where even a single 10 mile ride will coat everything from top
tube to drivetrain and disc calipers in a thick coating of dust. (Dust is
the principal reason for using fenders on my Matthews; doesn't keep all the
dust off, but it certainly lessens the amount on things above the knee.)

Also, for longer-term users: Did Michael overdo the application? Do you
really need to put a drop on only 12 links out of N?

[RBW] Pics from my good ride

2020-06-05 Thread Patrick Moore
Just one photo today; 12-14* above normal. I hesitated, but did want to
ride, and wanted to ride the gofast, so that's what I did. I avoided all
but a few smallish hills, tho' I couldn't avoid the concurrent headwinds;
76" gear; just 12 1/2 miles. Fortunately the sky was a bit hazy so tho' the
air was hot, we didn't have that oven-like solar radiant heat, and the
humidity is low.

I do enjoy others' photos and hope youse aren't as hot.

Holy moly that Cheviot with the (hard to find) Potluck rack is SPECTACULAR. And
those fenders! I'm outta the game because I just bought a custom, but if anyone
is wavering on this you better jump. That bike in that size in that condition
and build isn't going to pop up again hardly ever. Do the thing!

Re: [RBW] Hot Waxing Chains

2020-06-05 Thread John Bokman
I also have been very impressed with NFS. I used to use boeshield, and
triflow, and finishlineWhere I live in Oregon it is wet 8 months a
year. I commute daily, and oil gunking up the drivetrain can be a real
mess. So I tried the NFS simply to keep everything cleaner. It has been the
cleanest I've used, and also longest lasting.

Re: [RBW] Hot Waxing Chains

2020-06-05 Thread Michael Hechmer
So I bought a bottle of NFS (Nixfrikshun) for my trust Saluki, now
dressed up in brandy new TA rings. I followed the instructions to put a
drop on 12 links and spin the chain backwards 12 times. There was no sign
of any lube on the big ring, so I added 4 more drops and spun 12 times.
Still no sign of any lube. Added 4 more drops & spun. No sign of any
lube, but this time I lightly rubbed a finger across the chain and could
feel just the thinnest film of oil. Went out for an hours ride on dirt
roads. The bike ran quietly, or as quietly as tires can roll over loose
dirt, shifted flawlessly; certainly no chain squeak. Returning I checked
the rings & chain and saw a small amount of lube on the rings. No visible
dirt. Wiped the chain and the big ring down.

I'm definitely impressed and thanks to Robert Tilley for the suggestion.

I'm the odd man out, one has a Homer, one an orange Roadini plus at least one

I would love to get an Appaloosa at some point.
However all 5 of my bikes are currently set up 'Riv like'.
I did have a Riv Custom back in 1999.

I didn’t like the human names at first, but I guess I’ve gotten used to
