For the saddles double plastic bag them, tape the bottom, and then put
on a saddle cover so the bags don't shred in the wind. They'll stay dry

[RBW] For Sale: Swift Zeitgeist (~2018-2019) burgundy, X-Pac, small & large

2020-07-18 Thread Matthew P
For sale:

X-Pac burgundy Swift Zeitgeist (~2018-2019; before the latest model), small
and large.

Large has Bagman quick release system and support.

I purchased from Swift as demo/shelf models. They had them on bikes for a
photo shoot.
I never used. They had masking tape on them and I cleaned off the small
amount of residue (lightly; go over it again with what you're comfortable
with) left behind.
I'm going with bigger bags. I would like to keep such nice bags but I've
overspent lately and better sell to recover funds.

I'm asking:
$190 for the large with the Bagman quick release system and support
$140 for the large bag alone
$80 for the support and quick release
$120 for the small Zeitgeist

I'll ship to CONUS, splitting the shipping with the buyer.

Hello,

Its the 12 cm reach version of this:
https://www.rivbike.com/collections/stems/products/nitto-lugged-quill-26-0
https://photos.app.goo.gl/Q2xnve11rAnUYARW7
https://photos.app.goo.gl/pPyP8BD1A1XPkPK78

This is what I have for this stuff:
bars.pretty sure they are the albatross.$70
stem.Nitto lugged..$120
grips.Newbaum wrap w/ padding under$5 "installed" ;-)
brake leversShimano$70
--
total $265
Buy the bundle and I cover the shipping ($30?) in CONUS.
Or make me an offer on the bundle or pieces.

That lugged stem is pricey. Rivendell has it at $228 new.
Its cheaper elsewhere so I adjusted.

I also have Paul touring cantilever brakes (polished). $100 shipped CONUS.

Can be full build or just frame/fork/seat post -- however you''d buy it

I am in NYC and Delaware, so if local, I am happy to travel to pick up

A trick to Ted's method is to mark the tire with a thin line of chalk, so
the ground will be marked by the chalk as the tire rolls over the mark.
Also, your error will be lower if you do two or more revolutions of the

[RBW] Bike frame suggestions for longish distance 95% road comfort

2020-07-18 Thread William deRosset
Dear Andrew,

You have found your huckleberry, but given your weight and design constraints,
I would also suggest a UJB designed around 27"(28-630) wheels and repurposed to
700c (32-622). Or something like a Boulder Bicycle Road Sport ( which would not
be front-loading).

The UJBs will have BSC threading (or can be easily modified to do so). If you
pick one on the high end of the parts range while still built around 27" wheels
it will have a 531c tubing spec, which was the standard for fun and lively
mid-sized bikes since the late 1930's. They will typically have eyelets for
fenders.

The Boulder Bicycle Road Sport is now unobtainium new, but was designed around
the basic sporting needs you describe (note that I helped design it). 32mm
tires, flexible tubing for lighter riders, and 57-reach brakes; fork rake
bumped up for the wider tires. It was not designed for fenders. Everyone
involved with that project ended up with one in their regular rotation.

Mine was a welded prototype, and is my most-ridden machine in these CoViD-19
no-commute-to-work-for-me times. It has served as a racing bike, a cx bike, my
general road machine, and handles gravel and 32mm tires with aplomb. Mine is
not front loaded, but Mike Kone straps a giant Berthoud to his and rides hard
with it.

They are around on the used market in a silver-brazed longpoint lugged version
with nicely-thinned Cinelli-drilled lugs. Mine is welded, and I kinda regret
not getting one with lugs after the prototype came out so well.

Best Regards,

Will

Excellent inquiry!! I had the same thought, and I bought some of the VO
city levers for road bars to try it out. It's a huge improvement, IMO, for
using M bars for upright, city-ish riding. Even for off-roading, I
preferred them over regular road levers. I could never find a comfortable,
useful brake lever position on M bars before that.

Jason gave the straight math version from the rim and tire sizes, which is
fine for most purposes.

If you want to get it more precisely, here are two approaches. For both of
them, if you want it accurate for when you are on the bike, you'll want
some help. Note that the results are tire pressure dependent.

With the bike as close to perpendicular to the ground as you can make it,
measure the distance from the ground at the center of the tire contact
patch to the center of the axle. Measure both sides several times and take
the average of all the measurements (throwing out any oddball outliers if
you have them).

The old Avocet Cyclometer prescribed method: Set the front wheel so the
valve stem is at the very bottom and mark a line on the ground at the
center of the tire contact patch, where the valve stem is. Ride the bike
forward in a straight line one revolution of the front wheel, and mark
another line where the center of the contact patch (and the valve stem) now
are. Measure the distance between the two marks. Divide that distance by
2*Pi, and that's your radius. (For more accuracy, repeat that measurement
several times and take the average.). It's possible to put a chalk line on
your tire and do this yourself, without help.

John,

The Roadeo frame is much lighter than the Ram's. Definitely not equivalent.

Re: [RBW] Re: XO-1 or Roadini

2020-07-18 Thread Nate in Oakland
I just bought a new 54cm roadini this week, built it up with mostly leftover
parts (as quick as possible without sleeping) and took it for a shake down ride
in the hills yesterday evening. The ride climbs 1200 ft or so on not great
roads and descends quickly on pretty sketchy road.

I ride this a couple time a week on my Atlantis or Sam. On the Roadini, I was
in a bigger gear the whole time. I was suddenly passing several carbon bikes.
The ride was twitchier than my other bikes but still very stable. Def a fast
roadish bike even (maybe because of?) with 38mm Barlow pass el. The stack and
reach on the roadini make it more suited for drops than any other riv without
funny stems.

If I had to have one bike and choose between a homer and a roadini, I’d take
the homer for the utility, smoothness, and lugs. Roadini is a really good
second or third bike.

Nate
