Re: [RBW] Re: Repaints

2021-04-15 Thread Peter Adler

I had a long CR-ish conversation with the SSInk rep at NAHBS in Sacramento
years back (2010? 2011? I can't remember). He said that consumers couldn't
order decals from them directly; the order had to come through a retailer,
a frame builder or a painter. This was intended to prevent scammers palming
off lower grade frames as name brand items on unsuspecting consumers. Since
several prominent CRers fit into one or more of those categories, I had
speculated on the idea of having one of them act as a middleman for the
production/distribution of decals from smaller defunct marques, but I never
followed through with it. Has SSI liberalized their sales policy since then?

If you need Riv decals, I don't see any reason that Riv HQ wouldn't act as
your go-between with SSI, assuming your painter can't get them directly. Or
are you refinishing the frameset on your own?

2021-04-15 Thread Brendan Willard in SF
One too many bikes here, and I think I want to throw money at my next BMC
build.

pics here

I'd like to sell locally so UPS/Fedex don't crush another nice bike by
stacking it sideways under a refrigerator.

56/57cm (I'll go measure tomorrow) Protovelo- I'm pretty sure this is the
Bleriot Geometry, but I really don't know.

Clear over raw frame with the normal touches of oxidation under.

SON/White Industries to Velocity A23 rims
Compass/Rene Herse 650x42 Extralight tires
Nitto Stem
Simworks So Bar 50cm
Gevenalle Brake Levers with Riv Silver Shifters
Nitto S83 SP
Paul Racers- Silver Front, Black Back because mismatched Pauls is the new
upside down Chris King
IRD Defiant 44/30 170mm Cranks
IRD BB
IRD Sub C FD
XT RD
11-36 Cassette
Front Light, Pedals, and Seat not included.

I'm sure I forgot something, and I'm sure I'll be reminded what within the
hour.

[RBW] wtb: 10 speed compatible wheelset 700c

2021-04-15 Thread Justin
Howdy Bunch

Kinda cross posting, I'm looking for a wheelset for a friend in Grants Pass
who is getting back on the bike and dusting off his single speed Surly
Cross Check. He's no longer in PDX and the single speed just isn't going to
cut it, we gotta take care of our knees at our age. I've got him sold on
trying the Microshift Advent X groupset and the last piece to the puzzle is
wheels. His rear wheel was trashed long ago and I don't think they could
have handled a tire bigger than 38 anyway, and we hope to max out the tire
clearance for the Cross Check at around 48. front 100mm / rear 135mm

So if you have anything that fits or know a good place to look for new give
me a holler. I'm looking at used just to try to keep it affordable for him.
If you are local great, if not that's ok as well. I do realize it's still
Covid times and folks aren't letting things go as easily as before, but
it's worth a shot.

thanks and peace
J

I shall dissent from the others who like these things. I had the one Riv

time I lived in an upstairs apartment and the extra weight when lifting the

Re: [RBW] Re: Clem's mount for rear wheel lock.

2021-04-15 Thread Patrick Moore
I agree that frame-mount locks are very convenient, but probably best for
bikes too heavy for a casual thief to lift and walk away with. Almost every
Indian-made DL-1 copy had one when I was a wee lad, all stamped from sheet
metal, and all with, probably, the same stamped-steel key.

I last used one on a very nice short-distance grocery getter, a hot-rodded
(*) Worksman tricycle -- no one was going to casually heft that over his
shoulder and walk away! But it was very liberating to ride up to the store,
flip the lever, *no need for a bike rack because the vehicle stood up by
itself*, and simply walk into the store like any other normal human being.

(* Imposed a Stronglight 99 crank on it by beating -- very nicely, I may
add -- an indentation in the "chainstay" so the crank arm would clear, so I
could install a 40-something ring in place of the absurdly small 32 or
whatever the stock was, for a ~67-70" gear; clamp-on combined bottle
dynamo/LED headlight, Wald Newsboy basket, and of course a decent saddle; B
68, I think. Trikes -- I also owned a refurbished Ken Rogers BRT with huge
Hoss saddlebag -- are the ultimately good grocery haulers.)

Re: [RBW] Re: Spiky platform pedal plus SPD? MAP bar surgery and reasons therefore.

2021-04-15 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks, Mike. Agree that $115 is rather dear for this bike, and Shimano's
EH 500 is only $80 or so. Pat, the ISSI Flip 3 also looks viable -- RBR
gave it a good review -- but again, $100.

But for the moment, I am retrogressing back to the "SPD versus clips and
straps" conundrum. Clips and straps is the best of all worlds, except that
I don't own any shoes suitable for clips and straps in off road dirt, so
I'm back to the SPDs at this point. I wear slippers indoors, and when going
out generally slip on boat shoes/moccasins or cowboy boots. Slip ons are
fine for pavement riding or taking the dog for a quick run on dirt, but not
for extended rides in our sandy soil. Perhaps the solution will be a cheap
pair of casual lace up shoes from Target.

Re: [RBW] Re: Introduction and Tire Question

2021-04-15 Thread Patrick Moore
This to clarify my opinion on tubes versus no tubes, from someone who is,
oh so very aware of the limitations of tubes (again, pre-sealant, and
refusing to use heavy tires, used up the greater part of 2 X 100-boxes of
Remas each year).

FWIW, I used (125 gram) tubes in the EL Naches Pass 559 X 42s, each with a
half-cup of Airlock sealant, and I was expecting the tires to feel draggy.
Not at all; could not tell any difference by seat of pants when I had the
NPs converted to tubeless with 2 fl oz of OS. That's with the NP ELs. OTOH,
when I briefly* rode 559 X 32 mm Kojaks tubeless, I did feel -- note the
word -- an improvement in ease of pedaling (lower rolling resistance) and
comfort. So the difference may come down to the type of tire.

And second, the Elk Pass tires with sealant in tubes roll at least as well
as the NPs do without tubes (and with; as above).

>From my own personal experience, and from what I've read onlist and
elsewhere, and goatheads apart: for lower pressures and fatter tires,
there's no reason not to use a tubeless system and some reasons to do so:
lower weight, no pinch flatting if you are prone to that. But for narrow
(32 mm and skinnier) tires of the best quality, like the RH ELs, I can't
see a reason to use a tubeless system if there are no goatheads and you
don't pinch flat.

To repeat: *my own experience such as it is is that for very supple tires
at least up to 42 mm wide there is no difference in ride quality between
tubes and no tubes.* This certainly seems to change for less supple tires.

Jan claims that there is no benefit for tubeless for narrower, higher
pressure tires, and my experience agrees with his assertion.

Goatheads of course change everything. And none of this involves the
question of rim choice; there are not many, perhaps not any, road-type
tubeless rims in the 559 mm diameter.

The value of tubes of course is that, when you get that puncture that
sealant will not seal, you have a relatively easy and clean and quick
remedy, and I have fixed enough sealant fails, and far more tube fails,
roadside, to know the advantage. So absent goatheads, and for very light
road tires, and given the availability of 60-70 gram tubes, I believe that
tubes are still a very good and even best choice.

Patrick "none of this is scientific by any means" Moore

* Neither the Kojaks or the rims were tubeless designed, and you could not
get a firm bead grip on the rim, leaving only air pressure to hold the
beads in place. I rode the setup for ~200 miles and then chickened out.

[RBW] Re: Clem's mount for rear wheel lock.

2021-04-15 Thread Arthur Mayfield
I considered one, but then decided that: A. For the cost, a smaller U lock
would work just as well, and be more versatile; and B. Frame locks would
seem to be most useful for heavy bikes (like many Dutch-style bikes) that
can’t be easily picked up and walked off with. While I like the idea of
simply turning a key and walking away, my bikes (as built) are all too
lightweight and valuable for that. If I wanted to risk it, I could simply
slip a U lock through the rear triangle almost as quickly as using a frame
lock.

I had a Clem-like Dutch bike for many years with a frame lock. I used it
all of the time to lock up in front of a store for a few minutes. It's
also extra security for longer-term lock-ups because it protects your rear

I had a cable lock that plugged in as well. I still used another U-lock

Re: [RBW] Re: Introduction and Tire Question

2021-04-15 Thread ascpgh
Chrristine, I made the jump with my 650B bike, built around 42mm RH
BabyShoe Pass standard casing tires on Pacenti Brevet rims. My mechanic
said that this size is where the clear decision for tubeless is, based on
ride quality, flatproofness and weight. She said there isn't much of a
question although some circumstances are described where particular riders
may continue to run tubed tires at this size. Mostly because they did
before tubeless and are obstinate. Even without threats like goatheads or
wider, lower pressure tires like Patrick's, my tubeless setup is lighter
and better performing than the 700C x 32mm RH Stampede Pass EL tires with
tubes that I had been riding on my Rivendell Rambouillet.

I have had no punctures over the past year on my tubeless tires and that
has included many miles on unpaved paths, trails and winter degraded
streets with their usual glass and wire strand debris. I was happy to find
that in use the 650B x 42mm tires plus sealant were not heavy or sluggish
at all, not even for an argument's sake. They contributed to an energetic
feeling the of the whole bike.

 Hello, group! Help needed!

I am getting to the point with my RivBike that I will soon be needing a
repaint. My fifteen year-old Rambouillet is a four-season commuter with
around 55K miles on it, 99% racked up on NYC streets and bike lanes. With
all that, not to mention daily chaining to a bike rack, it would be
impossible to maintain a frame in pristine condition but now my periodic
inspections are starting to turn up evidence of corrosion causing wee
blisters in the original paint in a few places.

The Rivendell website page on repaints lists a couple of shops in CA
 and Waterford.

Anyone here have any wisdom/experience/opinions on this subject they'd
care to offer regarding these or any other paint shops? Ideally, I'd love
to find someone with mad skilz in the greater NYC area who has experience
with the Rivendell product and access to the Rivendell decals.

Very grateful, in advance, for any help!
