[RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne Front Derailleur setup problems

2021-06-09 Thread Bill Lindsay
That's an M735 front der. I think you may have better luck with an M737.

The M735 has a really long lever arm, which requires a lot of cable to pull
it. The M735 was pretty much only used with thumb shifters, which had a
comparatively large barrel, and thus pulled a bunch of cable.

The M737 has a shorter lever arm, and does not require as much cable pull
to move it around. Those were intended to work with rapidfire shifters,
but worked well with barcons.

Here's one: New Shimano Deore XT FD-M737 Front Derailleur Bottom Pull
28.6mm Clamp 8 Speed | eBay

It's possible you can get your M735 to work. Two minutes in my workstand
and I could tell you. Your setup method as described sounds good.

[RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne Front Derailleur setup problems

2021-06-09 Thread Joe Bernard
You're correct that this combination *should *work. Two things I would look
at first:

1. Is the cable routed OVER that little nub at the top of the derailleur?
It's easy to miss that and have the cable pass between the nub and fixing
bolt, you'll lose leverage that way and the derailleur won't move far
enough.

2. Is the High Limit screw backed out enough?

After that there could be a shifter or cable drag problem, but let's make
sure the fd settings are good first.

Also, if anyone is interested, Spicer Cycles in Evansville, IN added the
canti-posts, crimped the stays, added the extra water bottle mount,
fabricated the rear brake cable hanger, added downtube bosses, and spaced
the frame. He's also one of the nicest, most intelligent people I've met
and his prices were beyond fair. And yes 510s are absurdly undervalued and
Ishiwata has the best decals. Nerd out all day! I'm a little romantic about

2021-06-09 Thread Andrew Turner
Well we hit a snag with the frameset I purchased...there's a good chance
it's lost in the customs abyss (stuck since April 2), so I figured I'd put
out some feelers in case I get a refund...there's a couple frames on eBay I
was looking at but the cool ones are all overseas...which I'm trying to
avoid.

Looking for something with Reynolds 531/Columbus Thron level tubing,
vertical road dropouts, 130/100 spacing, 1" threaded, english or italian
threaded BB, clearance for at least a 25mm tire, built for short reach
brakes, and downtube shifter bosses. Framesets only. If anyone's got some
leads, I'm all ears but it might be a couple weeks before I can commit to
make sure the missing frame is truly MIA.

Thanks!

Re: [RBW] Re: Seeking advice - Sam Hillborne vs Atlantis

2021-06-09 Thread Jason Fuller
I certainly don't think you can do wrong between the two, given your riding
plans, and the Appaloosa would do the trick well too! If you're really
attached to the Atlantis for its color and extra tube, I would personally
hold out for that - it's a lifetime bike right, might as well get exactly
what you dreamt of! The longer top tube can be accommodated thanks to
recent advances in very short stems - I'd start with a 5cm long Tallux,
which is what I run on my Hillborne because I like a shorter reach with my
drops, and if it's still too long you can get a Crust BJ stem in 26.0 clamp
that has less than 30mm of reach. Heck, with a quill-to-threadless
adapter, there are also zero reach options from Analog.

This might sound like a band-aid for poor fit, but I don't feel that's the
case at all - this isn't a typical road bike, and the long frame / short
stem combo gets the front wheel further out in front of you for better
off-road handling and comfort. Basically, it allows you to run drops but
keep your center of gravity similar to where it would be with flat bars,
for better mixed-terrain handling. Also, since this is a lifetime bike
hopefully, the Atlantis will suit upright bars very nicely if your aging
body requires it in the (hopefully distant) future!

Also, the Atlantis will leave more options for you to go bigger or smaller
on tires - you don't have to use all that tire clearance, but it's nice to
know it's there.

[RBW] Re: Trek 510/Fun with paint pens

2021-06-09 Thread exliontamer
Thanks! Treks from this era are hidden gems. I don't understand why they're
so cheap considering how useful they are as all rounders. I picked up a set
of water based, extra fine tipped acrylic paint pens. My only lesson was
that the yellow and pink in this set were more vivid than the orange and
teal against the dark green but that's my fault for not knowing enough
about color contrast. Follow the directions that come with the pens in
terms of shaking and getting paint flow(get the flow going on a scrap piece
of paper or cardboard). Don't press your tips too hard. The brand I bought
was Zeyar and they worked great.
I'm not sure how long it took but it was an all nighter. I was too
lazy/cheap to disassemble the bike outside of taking the front wheel off. I
used one of those cheap stands that cradles the seat and chain stays and
rotated between that and the bike laying on the floor across my lap.
Wrestling documentaries and Star Trek passed the time/kept me relaxed.

2021-06-09 Thread Joe Bernard
I'm loathe to jump back in because I regretted (and deleted) my last round
of price whining BUT... that Clem H frame is presented as ridden with some
nicks and scratches. I guess he's adding in the cost of cranks and posh but
I still don't see $1600 there. BUT I did a KBB search on my four year old
car yesterday just to see what the market looks like these days (I do this
occasionally) and was shocked at how much the value has shot up in a year.
So who knows, maybe used Rivs are getting crazy prices now! 路

Swift Paloma - I put one on my new Breadwinner and am very happy with it.
It's not as big as the old Rivendell Boxy Bag, which is the best ever (if
you can live without a built in map pocket).

[RBW] Re: FS: Bikes on eBay, CraigsLIst, and Other Sites

2021-06-09 Thread Matt Beecher
If I did not have a Saluki and I wanted one, I would gladly buy that one if
it were my size. They are nice bikes and have a good following. When the
time comes for me to sell mine, I expect I might do the same. If the
seller does not need to sell them, there is no harm in posting a high price
that they would be willing to sell one for.

In my personal *opinion*, I think the Heron is likely overpriced a bit.
That said, there have been some incredible bargains for Heron's lately.

2021-06-09 Thread Roberta
I'm so excited for everyone! I've ridden mine a few times (not set up
quite right) and I can tell the bike (frame with tires) is comfortable.
It's compliant with road imperfections. Once I get the right stem height
with correct bars and appropriate bags and extras, I'll post pictures and
report back.

Riv has the best bag ever, of course, designed specifically for that rack:

https://www.rivbike.com/collections/bags/products/sackville-trunksack-small-olive-20134

There's also one from Zimbale. I have one in black.
It's not neatly as well made as the sackville, but is great for the price:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/333248195824?hash=item4d9723ecf0:g:LIsAAOSwgyZcIfI5

Acorn used to make one. They said they're making some design changes and
then will hopefully bring it back.

These mini trunk bags are my favorite because they don't affect handling,
but still give you room to keep a few important things in view.

Re: [RBW] To My Platypus People!

2021-06-09 Thread Tom Wyland
I've added my fenders (SKS P50), dynamo lights and front derailleur (Campy
from Joe!) to my Platy. I've gotten lots of insights from this group! My
wife and I took a little ride through local trails on Sunday, dodging
cicadas. Some dirt farm paths and a few stream crossings (even a tunnel).
Not bad for the DC suburbs. The Platy is pretty amazing. The fork (and
quill stem) are much more compliant than any other bike I've ridden. I see
why Grant has kept away from disk brakes. You'd never get that feel with a
beefed-up thru-axle fork and disk brakes.

Re: [RBW] Re: Seeking advice - Sam Hillborne vs Atlantis

2021-06-09 Thread Daniel Searson
Hello everyone,

Thank you for the welcome and for the detailed and thought out replies!
Your advice is much appreciated. It sounds like it would be a good idea to
talk with Rivendell directly, which I have been meaning to do as well. Its
good to also get some honest feedback from people with direct experience. I
think based on some of your replies I would be leaning towards the Sam
Hillborne, I certainly don't think I'd be disappointed.

Michael - the Appaloosa did cross my mind as well, thanks for the
suggestion. For some reason it doesn't resonate with me as much, perhaps
it's the lack of rainbow top tube! I think all the photos I've seen of them
are upright bar builds, so I can't really picture the frame with drop bars.

One thing I didn't mention is that I live in Australia, so Rivendells are
super rare here. In fact, I've only ever seen one in the flesh (a Platypus,
coincidentally). There is a bike shop here in Adelaide who have recently
started importing Rivendells which has got me thinking about all of this.

Cheers
Daniel

Re: [RBW] Advice for after a Fall?

2021-06-09 Thread exliontamer
Erik's 100% right on about steel's resiliency. The mechanic was pretty
amazed that the Atlantis was able to go back into perfect alignment with
relative ease. Especially considering the wheels , bars, brake levers, etc,
were comically bent up.
I'm sorry to hear about everyone's wrecks. I feel like I got off so easily
considering. The guy who did it drove off but I happened to be present
enough get his license plate number. Three joggers witnessed the whole
thing and were kind enough to stay as witnesses. The officer who filed the
report came up to me as I was being loaded into the ambulance to let me
know that they caught him in downtown Nashville. His insurance company
covered everything. I think they were happy that I wasn't filing a lawsuit.
Kind of a strange night in the sense that despite the negativity of that
pecker doing a hit and run, the joggers, police officers, doctors, and
emt's made my faith in humanity even stronger...I still remind myself of
that night when I start to feel misanthropic feelings coming on.
Anyhow Ben, I'm glad you're ok. If you're anything like me, it takes about
a week of riding again before I start feeling confident again after wrecks.
I also want add that if aluminum bars bend(or any aluminum parts), get new
ones. It's not BS. The lose their resiliency with bending and strong
impact. I have a Laser Helium helmet and would recommend it for
ventilation, comfort, and adjustment. I'm also in the muggy southeastern
US. Also I don't think helmets are capable of looking cool outside of this.
