[RBW] Re: WTB Bosco moose 58 w/12 degree downslope

2021-06-24 Thread Joe Bernard
That's a good data point, Keith. The headtube is quite slack on my Susie
and I had swapped a Bosco Bullmoose over from my custom. The angle change
was noticeable.

[RBW] Re: WTB Bosco moose 58 w/12 degree downslope

2021-06-24 Thread iamkeith
Not what you're asking for, but for what it's worth:

I just traded a Clem H for a Susie Longbolts, moving my 58cm "normal" bosco
moose bar from the former to the later. When I had the Clem, I too
searched for one of the rare, down-sloping Bosco bars, because I thought
I'd prefer it. (Prior to the bull moose version, I had a normal, separate
bosco and did angle it more downward by quite a bit.) However, on the
Susie I feel content with the angle of the bars on the "normal" bull moose
version. The head tube angle is just enough slacker as to add some helpful
slope. And this is DESPITE the fact that the headtube/bars are higher than
I'd prefer on the susie. I no longer feel like my hands want to slide
forward wnen going down a steep hill.

So I'd suggest trying a normal one if you can even find it. I'm not
entirely sure the bullmoose bars - of any shape or angle - will be easy to
come by in the future.

Re: [RBW] H/Hilsen (Toyo) tire size

2021-06-24 Thread Doug Williams
Yes, sorry. I should have mentioned that my 56 Hilsen is 650B. The largest
Hilsen that is 650B. Essentially a Saluki with a different paint job. But
yes, I have run 42mm Babyshoe Pass tires under the SKS fenders for years
with zero issues. Of course, Mark at Rivendell installed the fenders, and
he is a master. If I had put them on, they would probably rub everywhere.

[RBW] Re: Do you stand and pull with upright bars?

2021-06-24 Thread Bones
Agreed. Works well with Albatross, Billie, and Choco bars. In my
experience, the lower and further away the bars are, the more effective it
is. Bosco bars work as well but they have a lot more rise, so unless you
keep them kinda low and angle them a good amount, it won't work as well.

[RBW] Re: Do you stand and pull with upright bars?

2021-06-24 Thread A. Douglas M.
Zack,

I ride albatross bars with Avid MTB levers and thumbies. No problem
standing to climb or sprint.

I really like albatross bars. I might try Billie bars someday but I’m cheap
and albatross work so well I might not.

Mine are shimmed in a 26.0 tallux. No squeaks or issues.

Best,

Aaron in El Paso

Re: [RBW] Ride Quality Difference between the Atlantis and Clem H?

2021-06-24 Thread E. Ricky Creek
It is time for me to fess up as to how many Riv's were (until recently) in
my garage: 7. I ride a Waterford Atlantis, a Waterford Hillborne (rare
canti/double TT 56cm), a Simpleone, and I recently sold a Gomez and a Clem
H. My wife rides a Cheviot and an Appaloosa (both are in my size range). I
rode the Clem H for 5-6 years and every time I rode it I thought "I just
don't love this bike, but it is the bike I ride the most (commuter)." I
ride a 58cm traditionally sized bike and found the 52 Clem H just never fit
right (too small). The 60cm Yves Gomez was too big and never felt
comfortable. Much like you my dream bike (since 2004) was the Atlantis.
I've had mine for 4 years. If I only could keep one bike, it would be the
Atlantis. I am not as fond of the long chainstays as others here are, but I
have ridden them and didn't think they are bad, but I prefer the ride of my
Hillborne and Atlantis (and sometimes when my knees are feeling okay the
Simpleone). If you are into bikes and dream of different bikes and spent
crazy amounts of time looking at bikes (and parts!), thinking that X bike
will complete your bike quest, then buying your dream bike now may not
truly satisfy your hunger. I bought, rode, sold, traded, gave away many
bikes on my journey to my current stable, which is perfect for me. But if
I'd started way back in 2003 (when I got into riding as an "adult") with
this bunch of bikes I likely wouldn't feel the way about them as I do now.
I don't know what the answer is for you, nor does anyone, really, but you
can't go wrong with any bike that fits you and you enjoy riding. Plus if
you score a Clem on this list, it will still be worth what you paid in a
year (maybe more?!), and folks on this list are always up for a "new" bike.

That was long winded and didn't answer your question. The Clem H rode slow
and fat for me (as I am slow and fat), and it didn't fit me right because
of the huge gap between sizes. The Atlantis (original style) rides much
more like a traditional touring bike (stable, easy handling), which I
prefer. I rode a LHT for years and the Atlantis rides more similar, though
much better, that that. The bikes were set up with upright bars (though the
Atlantis now has wide drops, which I prefer).

I too subscribe to the Psychic Derailleur channel & find it fun &

usually less than 10 minutes & he stays focused on the topic of the day.

I have a 58 cm 2003 Atlantis that has seen extensive use in all the

mm tires to it but chosen to run 40 mm as my optimal size. The bike is

I've never ridden a Clem so obviously I'm highly biased in this but if the
Atlantis is your dream bike, go for it. A frequent comment from list
members who've sold an Atlantis is "I wish I hadn't done that".

Used ones pop up here from time to time, usually in the common frame
sizes. While there is nothing like a brand new bike (I still remember
pulling mine out of the shipping box), a used Atlantis is still a great
bike. It's not as if steel frames wear out. Besides, if the Atlantis is

[RBW] Re: Do you stand and pull with upright bars?

2021-06-24 Thread Erik Wright
Hey Zack,

I ride with Albatross bars on my Hillborne. I also do a lot of city riding
in Philly where just about every intersection has a stop sign. I stand &
pull all the time from just about every hand position on the bar. In my
opinion, it's fine. The one thing I'd say is to make sure you either use a
25.4 stem or get a shim for a 26.0 stem- the bars WILL scooch around with
aggressive pulling.

Re: [RBW] Ride Quality Difference between the Atlantis and Clem H?

2021-06-24 Thread James Warren

I’m an Atlantis owner and a family member of a Clem owner, which I have ridden.
Disclaimer: that Clem is 2 cm above my ideal size.

If it were me, I’d save up and get an Atlantis, especially if pre-owned. A used
one probably has less tire room, but still has a lot of tire room, and the
newest ones, according to the Riv site fit 2.4”, which I think matches the
Clem. And it rides better, more efficient. It’s all around a more versatile
bike if you’re looking for a do-all with road-riding in mind as well as trails.

And even if you find one of the oldest models (mine’s generation 1 from 2000)
the tire clearance will still be close to 2”. And the tire room only got better
as the model evolved from 2000 to now.

I’ve used my Atlantis for every kind of riding I enjoy (which does not include
steep downhill fast rocky mountain biking!)

Touring - amazing
Dirt road bike packing - amazing
Commuting - amazing
Cross country mountain biking and dirt climbing - amazing
Drop bar road riding - very good

Regarding the OPs request for "Paul Thumbie mount". There are three
models: Shimano/SRAM/Microshift, two clamp diameters, and they come in left
and right. So I think that makes 18 different combinations. Which of
those 18 possible combos do you seek? I can sell you a LEFT, Shimano,
31.8mm, if that happens to be the combination you seek. I would sell it
for half-MSRP ($30), plus shipping. If you want to clamp to the sleeved
part of a 26.0mm handlebar, I could also sell you the perfect shimset to
enable that.

[RBW] Ride Quality Difference between the Atlantis and Clem H?

2021-06-24 Thread max.c....@gmail.com
Hey all, I am a wannabe Riv owner. One day, when the mood of my wife and
bank account align...at least that's my hope.

I browse a lot of used listings and sometimes will see a deal pop up that
I'm interested in, but feel like I don't have enough info to confidently
purchase. Looking for some insight especially from those who have ridden
multiple Riv models.

I have a special nostalgia for the Rivendell Atlantis -- the color, the
geometry; it just seems like my dream bike and I don't have a
justification. The price is steep, though. I have been curious what the
difference in ride quality is when compared with the Clem H, as that's more
in my price range and I see used ones come up for sale much more
frequently. Obviously it's a different look and I'm missing lugs, etc, but
it does have those crazy long stays. What's the difference in ride quality?
Especially if I'm riding upright.

A couple of notes: I live in very flat Dallas, I primarily use my bike as a
commuter (towing my HappiSack) with a 10 mile radius but would also like to
do some light touring. My preferred set up is riding upright.

If anyone else would care to weigh in with a comparison between the ride
quality of the Atlantis and other Riv models, I'd be interested in those
too! Just trying to arm myself with information in a market where I often
am shopping online and unable to try before I buy.

Thanks,
Max

[RBW] Re: Do you stand and pull with upright bars?

2021-06-24 Thread Tom Palmer
Hi Zack,
I stand to climb even with a full load on my touring bike. Alabas are at my
bare minimum width for this, but body types vary. I transitioned to a wider
bar and enjoy it more than the albas on this bike. The bars are generic
chrome steel from a bike I bought long a go, but they just work. I had the
bike loaded up for a test run this week and climbed well for me standing.
When climbing or acellerating as you describe, I pull on the bars and rock
the bike.
Go for it.

[RBW] Re: Do you stand and pull with upright bars?

2021-06-24 Thread Garth
Zack, your ability to ride is inherent in you. The how comes as it's
called upon.

When I first tried setting up Albatross bars with mtb levers I knew right
away that they were not what I envisioned as no matter where I placed the
levers were in the way. Deflating for a moment .. then like a light
bulb being lit .. "*bar end brake levers" *arose within. I replied
. *Bar end brake levers. as in reverse time trial levers *? "*YES !
" *

I already knew I was going to use Suntour Thumb shifters and the best place
for me was just inside of curve of the bar. I got some Tektro RX 4.1 brake
levers and covered the bars with padded synthetic cork bar wrap. Now I was
free to use the bar from the top of the curve to the end, and like the
video you posted, my hands are most frequently in the middle to upper of
the straight portion. On hills/standing I move towards the top at the curve
if needed, but the middle to upper straight is usually what feels best.
Braking is a breeze from the middle with just 2 small fingers. I rarely if
ever ride at the very end of the bar, where a mtb grip would have one be. I
stand while riding very frequently. I can ride up a hill standing the whole
way if I wish, it feels entirely natural. Again, this comes down to each
riders own sensibilities. I've always liked standing while riding. Other
people always sit and never stand. Everyone has their own inherent sweet
spots.

When I hear people disliking a bar it usually has to do with how their
entire "cockpit" is set up and whether or not it really works for them. For
example, if I bought a complete bike from Riv setup the way they do I'd
surely dislike it. So if I gave it a negative review, what I'd really be
commenting on not the bike itself, but a sense of being out of tune with
that particular way of the bike. I wouldn't feel that way unless I
inherently knew "how to play" the tune inherent within.

Such is the awesomeness of Life, no two tunes are ever alike, each unique
in itself !

[RBW] Do you stand and pull with upright bars?

2021-06-24 Thread zem...@gmail.com
I've been interested in switching to albatross bars but one of my concerns
is that it'll be difficult to stand, pedal hard, and pull on the bars. I do
a lot of city riding, so being able to do this from a stop or rolling stop
is a key part of my riding.

I've watched Dan Stroud's (aka hobocross) video on how he sets up his albas
to have more of a "hoods" position, which seems like a natural solution to
this problem, but in his video he doesn't seem to stand and pull a whole

For the folks who managed to get an Appaloosa yesterday (or through

 80-90%

[RBW] WTB Bosco moose 58 w/12 degree downslope

2021-06-24 Thread Michael Monti
I just recently acquired a Susie frame and having thought about handlebar
choices, and having discovered that a downsloping 58cm bosco bullmoose bar
was once sold and is out there, I am inspired to ask ya'll if someone out
there with this setup is willing to sell this particular cockpit.

I just joined the group a month or so ago and have been impressed with all
the fantastic riv rants and fascinated that I can even make this request to
a group of people that know what Im talking about, thank you!

[RBW] wtb technomic deluxe or tallux 25.4 and 100-110 mm

2021-06-24 Thread Michael Baquerizo
preferably in close to new condition. i don't mind insertion marks but it's
not like i'm seeking them out.

225 extension preferably but i'd settle for the shorter one i guess.
