[RBW] Re: WTB: 50cm Roadini

2021-08-26 Thread Calvin Yolo
Thanks Joe. I'm leaning towards ordering a 53cm Roadeo. I think it's better
than buying that Roadini for $2k just to remove all the parts and install
the ones I'm sitting on. Looks like the geometry is really close between
the 50cm Roadini and 53cm Roadeo too, although the headtube is shorter on
the Roadeo.

Re: [RBW] V-brakes needed or a recommendation

2021-08-26 Thread Ray Varella
Thank you all,
I ended up with the Deore Vs over the Alivo for one reason and one reason
only, they have cartridge brake shoes so being able to upgrade shoes
without needing to fiddle with any adjustments made it an easy choice.
If they hadn’t been available I would have gone with the Alivos and
purchased some cartridge holders with pads.

2021-08-26 Thread Joe Bernard
I owned a Roadini and it's a very nice TIG-welded slightly stout road bike,
certainly worth the $900-or-so they were going for as a frameset at last
availability. BUT...a Roadeo is pretty much a custom handbuilt lightweight
(for Riv) lugged frame that comes in production sizes and geometry. In
other words I paid about $4k for a custom Riv frame built to my size,
weight and needs, but I'd never be able to claim a Roadeo is a lower
quality bike. If you find one that fits, buy it!

RBW recommended M730 for the Appaloosa they recently built for me. I have a
55 mm slick tires with SKS B65 fenders and the brakes clear fine in both
front and back. They are also priced pretty well at ~$25 per wheel (RBW
doesn't sell them as separate parts but you can easily find them on other
online retailers).

While selecting the parts, I remember Will mentioning something along the
lines of pad replacement being easier on these Tektro vs. Alivio brakes.

[RBW] Cycles Grand Bois Centerpulls vs Tektro R559

2021-08-26 Thread Brenton Eastman
I am also enjoying the hot takes on both sides. Of note: I am not planning
on converting to 650b wheels, so I would not be maxing out the reach of the
R559 brake. Another thing I am bothered by with the Grand Bois brakes is
mine need to be at the very shortest limit of their reach to meet my 700c
atlas hoops, making them super annoying to adjust, as they must be crammed
against the upper most point while dialing in. It almost requires a third
hand or some extra fingers to get proper angle, toe, and contact point. I
am 6'1 190lbs. I have not upgraded the pads...yet.

[RBW] FS - Riv/Blue Lug caps

2021-08-26 Thread Jay Lonner
I bought two of these, one in each color (tan and olive) hoping that they'd
fit my size 8 head. No dice. They're lovely hats and I really like the
vintage herringbone twill. They sold out quickly! They sold for $55 apiece
plus shipping, and since they are brand new and unworn apart from trying on
for sizing I'm asking for $60 shipped.

[RBW] WTB: 50cm Roadini

2021-08-26 Thread Calvin Yolo
Figured I'd try my luck on this board.

I'm aware of the Roadini which was posted in another thread on PB, but I'd
highly prefer just the frameset. They're asking $2000 for the complete and
I'm sitting on a bunch of parts for this build already. Part of me figures
if I'm going to spend $2000, I might as well save an extra $800 and get a
Roadeo.

Let me know what's out there. Or share thoughts on the Roadeo idea!

[RBW] FS: Velo Orange Campeur 59cm F/F/HS/BB & fenders & brakes

2021-08-26 Thread WETH
I bought a 59cm 700c Campeur from Velo Orange in December 2018 and never
got around to building it up. Now, I have too many other projects. I
mounted a pair of wheels into the drop outs with a few resulting paint
scuffs, otherwise the bike is perfect. Included in the price are unmounted
50mm 700c VO snakeskin fenders and Tektro CR710 Low-Profile Cantilever
brakes bought from Velo Orange along with the frame and never used.

Price: $500 PayPal for local pickup/delivery in the Washington, DC area;
$650 shipped (if LBS and Bike Flights charge me less, I will refund the
difference.) (Would prefer a local sale)

Please see photos
here: https://erlhouston.smugmug.com/Portfolio/For-Sale-Campeur-/

Happy to answer questions and am not inclined, at the moment, to part this
out.

Thanks, Bill. Yes, my father bestowed upon me the gift of knowing which
side of the soldering iron to grab so being somewhat handy with tools makes
that 'instantiating' possible and fulfilling. Oh, and I have a whole other

Patrick,

If I recall you wanted shoes that would be compatible with toe clips. Glad
you found your solution at Target (Their Goodfellow brand is decent in the
u-wear category too).
I've been through the same spendy exercise as you in search of a toe clip
compatible shoe. Currently using MKS touring pedals with Five Tens which is
a fairly grippy combination. If I decide to put on the clips and straps I
will pay a visit to Target:-)

That is so nicely done John. You've created what looks like a therapeutic
workspace too. I'm with you on the DIY Riv ethos which for me includes all
things bicycle and much more. Thank you for sharing your handiwork.

[RBW] Re: Rivs, jigs & DIY

2021-08-26 Thread John Rinker
Hey Brendon,

The arms with wheel braces are spring-loaded to open easily and hold the
rim in place, and the rim runs on two tiny wheels on each brace. The hub
support is 3 pieces of 1 x 4 laminated together and then sanded to a taper
with a threaded rod onto which I slide the hub. As you can see, it's held
onto the table with a clamp and then folds up for storage. No real
functionality issues, but I may slightly change the angle of the wheel
braces so the wheels contact the rim in a more perpendicular manner. I did
put some pieces of Newbaum's tape over exposed screw heads to avoid
scratching the rim as I put it in or take it out.

The inspiration came from the jig I saw on the Prowheelbuilder's homepage
(photo 8), but theirs is super skookum! I guess that's why they call 'em
'Pros'!

Cheers.

2021-08-26 Thread John Rinker
Hey Eric,

The hub support wasn't turned but run on a belt sander clamped upside down
to a sawhorse (Wish I had a lathe!). The shelves are bombproof and have
them all over my shop, and the woodstove works just fine though not in
summer so I can rearrange my shop. The table with the jig and the truing
stand is on wheels so I can move it around.

Cheers.

I dig those Wandel-style shelves in the background. I've built a lot of

And I'm into shops so I'm looking at everything — looks like the wood stove
