[RBW] Re: Upcoming AAH -build

2021-11-30 Thread David Person
I had a pair of Oracle Ridges on my side pull Sam for a short time. Had to
deflate the tires to get them past the brake pads on the Tektro 559s. Off
pavement they threw up a lot of small stones compared to The smooth treaded
Snoqualmie Pass. The paint on the underside of the down tube took a beating.

2021-11-30 Thread Jason Fuller
Sounds like a dreamy build overall, and congrats on the frame purchase!

My thoughts:
- I think the Oracle might be ambitious, clearance-wise. Herse tires run
bigger than most for their printed size, and add the knobs, and I'd be
surprised if those fit. I'd suggest their 42mm counterpart, Hurricane
Ridge, unless they've increased clearance this round and I haven't
realized.
- Gearing sounds dreamy but I'd just go 11-34 for the cassette so your
Nexave is happier, and you've still got a real nice low gear.
- If you have a line on Paul Racers, jump on it because they are not up on
the website anymore and might be tough to find. I am baffled that Paul
pulled them from production, of all the brake options they offer.

I wasn't sure whether to consider the Road and Road Standard as
different bikes, but I'll separate them out yeah. So then on the '95
lineup, was the Road a semi-custom while the AR and Mountain (Expedition?
Should I include this alt name?) were set geometry? From memory the Road
was the cheapest of the three so I was a bit confused by that all.

I'll research more on the Gen 1 Appaloosa and Mystery Bike because I
omitted them out of unawareness rather than conscious decision. I welcome
(heck, I beg for) any insight or leads you may have in this regard. I
think I'd also like to highlight in this timeline when models either
underwent significant geometry changes or changed builders (AHH and
Atlantis being obvious ones). This might turn into a full wiki, not sure
yet, depends how bored I get this winter I guess! I have webhosting
available, just need to sort some stuff out on that end.

[RBW] Re: Anyone heard the Silver rear hubs?

2021-11-30 Thread Bill Lindsay
Earlier in the thread I recommended vintage Deore XT rear hubs, and the OP
bought one of mine from me. I stumbled upon an ebay seller offering
vintage 32 hole Deore XT front hubs at the super low price of $18 shipped
(m737, skewer included). Front hubs never blow up, but dang that's a great
price. I'd pay $15 for the skewer on its own! Front hubs also make cool
fidget tchotchkes for your desk, or maybe you want to try wheelbuilding and
need a hub. I bought three of them.

Here's the ebay site: https://www.ebay.com/itm/393148158087

[RBW] Re: Rivendell Timeline - it's happening!

2021-11-30 Thread Chris L
The Mystery Bike/Appaloosa happened shortly after I discovered RBW, so
2012'ish sounds about right.

My memory is that Grant put out feelers for 10 people to buy a new bike,
completely sight unseen with no input (I don't remember if they were
allowed to choose color) into the bike. I don't recall if they were
completes or F/F/H, but $4000 sticks in my mind as being the cost.

I have several really good photos that were posted of those bikes.

Please let me know if you see something missing or incorrect! Note: I
left Protovelo's out because I'm not considering prototypes to be
 relevant;
I might be missing some Rosco's but only the Bubbe 51 and Road 55.5 are
ones I have any info on. The step-thru version seems to have snuck past my
 research so far.

But the 5mm are useful for so many other things on the bike. Mounting

Re: [RBW] Re: Great Blue Homers

2021-11-30 Thread deepak atreya
Will from riv said it will fit with Pacenti Brevet which has internal width
of 19 mm , the actual measured width of tire would be less than 48 . I also
had contacted one of the guys who had homer with 50 mm cazedero on sale
here ( unfortunately I missed it ) . He was also running them on pacenti
brevet and had actual tire width measure at 47.5 . So I guess even older
mit frame would fit large tires depending on internal width of rim .
The ability to run 48 mm tires really sealed the deal for me and for my
weight (155 lbs) it would pretty much get as close to “one bike to do it
all “ as possible ( I am hoping :-) ).

 Ok, I admit it, it's me. I have a 58 cm, 650b'd homer. My pbh is 87,
the 58 is just a tad long for me if I want to run noodles but it is an
otherwise ideal commuter with chaco bars. But I am for some reason very

Re: [RBW] Re: Great Blue Homers

2021-11-30 Thread Weston Hein
I've read a couple of people planning to run 48mm Oracle Ridge on the
incoming Homers. Do you all have input from Riv that the new frames will
fit this tire? I ask because that would definitely make the new frames more
tempting.

My experience trying to run the 48mm Oracle Ridge (tubeless on Quills) on
my girlfriends 2020 canti Hillborne was the fork was too narrow to clear
the knobs. The inside tang on the fork crown rubbed with out of saddle
climbing and the overall axle to crown up front and brake bridge in the
back were not high enough for sufficient clearance. It looks like Sam and
Homers use the same crown so curiosity has me wondering.

[RBW] Re: Looking for Rim Advice

2021-11-30 Thread Jeremy Till
As others have pointed out, there are ways to try to make mounting a tire
easier, and if your main goal is a wider tire, there is absolutely no
problem with putting a 35mm tire on a rim the width of the open pro. On my
Rambouillet I've maximized the tire size by running Paul Racer M brakes and
700x40 nominal (37.5mm actual) tires. A 35mm tire would be a great setup, I
think, and a good balance between tire volume and clearance. Picture
here: https://flic.kr/p/2kSZxh9

My rims are Velocity Aeroheads, which are very close in width to Open Pros
and DT RR 1.1's, if memory serves correctly. I don't experience any
handling issues with the wide tire/narrow rim combination. I run the
pressures 40 psi front/55 psi rear, and I've weighed between 225 and 235
lbs with this setup.

[RBW] Re: Looking for Rim Advice

2021-11-30 Thread Matt Beecher

I had issues with a rim recently and determined it was the cotton tape. I
switched to use the blue tape (Velocity?) that Riv sells and the rims were
manageable again. I don't recall the rim brand though, so I apologize for
that lack of information.

I have a wheel that came with veloplugs and found those suitable as well.

Best regards,
Matt B in Oswego, IL

Re: [RBW] Re: Great Blue Homers

2021-11-30 Thread Matt Beecher
I have wheels with both of those rims. I vastly prefer Atlas, if you can
source them. The A23 is my go-to rim if I want tires in the 33mm or less
range. I like Atlas for bigger rims, but I find I generally don't exceed
38mm for anything.

I don't really like my Dyad rims, but that might just be my aesthetic
opinion casting an overall negative view of them.

I have some Pacenti rims, but I bet they are the old ones that had a
failure issue. So far, they are still going strong and I like them well
enough.

Best regards,
Matt B in Oswego, IL

[RBW] Re: Looking for Rim Advice

2021-11-30 Thread lconley
I have changed to using Veloplugs on all of my wheels (tubeless would be an
insane maintenance nightmare on 20+ bicycles). I put them on all of my new
wheels and change to them on old wheels whenever I remove a tire for some
reason. They are lighter than cloth rim tape, easier to install and
reusable. They seem to be slicker than rim tape so it is easier to center
the tire on the low center of the rim which makes the tire easier to
mount/dismount.

2021-11-30 Thread Johnny Alien
Here is what i have left from my Saluki. I would love to move it along
quickly so feel free to make an offer.

   - Albastache Handlebars 26 Clamp - $75 shipped
   - Nitto Pearl 60 Stem - $60 shipped
   - Sugino PX (& triple rings 48/38/26) - $90 shipped
   - Suntour XC Pro DT Shifters and Derailers - $80 shipped total

Everything is in good shape the crankset has some minor wear to the logo
but no issues. I can send some photos if you want. The Sugino PX is a cool
crankset that can be set up as triple double or single. Here is some info.

Nice 58cm Sam with Dyno on eBay. It's in the Bay area...with all the
extras, I think it's a great deal. No affiliation with the seller here.

[RBW] Re: Looking for Rim Advice

2021-11-30 Thread Garth
Ben, not so fast with ditching what you have ! Tire mounting difficulty can
be as much the tire as the rim though but often it seems to come down to
technique and/or thinn-er rim tape. After years of using Velox, I changed
to nylon strapping tape, it's the kind that cords of nylon in it and comes
in a variety of widths. Super strong, one single layer with a slight
overlap where I began. Also, make sure the opposite bead is in the middle
groove when doing either side as the middle has a smaller ERD than the bead
shelf.

Here's some videos that show it.
