[RBW] Re: WTT Hunqapillar for Joe Appaloosa

2022-01-09 Thread Matthew P
I have the 57 cm orange Appaloosa but your Hunq is too big for me. A Hunq
for me would be about 56 cm I reckon.
Trade the Hunq for a smaller one and then trade that one to me?
We need a third person to make this bike trade triangle!

[RBW] Re: Platypus Questions

2022-01-09 Thread Joe Bernard
Yes, a Platy should be on the lighter side, remember it's derived from the
Cheviot which was kind of a droptube Hillborne road bike with road brakes.
Grant changed the brakes and a couple frame details, but it still should be
closer to Hillborne and Homer than the touring/fire roads category covered
by Atlantis and Appaloosa.

 Hi, Hugo.

I'm so glad you're enjoying the ride of your bike. Me, too! I had a
stand (no kick. you'd remove it when not in use) that attached to the
 rear
axle. While that worked perfect for my shorter chain stay Homer, there
 was
too much weight in front and Platy would get tipsy. I opted for the
standard Greenfield single leg kickstand with the foot, so it wouldn't mar
 my floor. Works perfectly. <$20.

[RBW] Re: Platypus Questions

2022-01-09 Thread Roberta
I don't mind a heavy-ish bike (I do own Rivendells, after all), but it can
be too heavy for me to lift onto a bike rack or over a log. I never
weighed my Platy, but I built it up with lightish parts--Brevet rims, some
kind of Gravel King tires run tubeless, 1x with Garbaruk cassette (they
remove unneeded metal), SKS fenders and lighter Axiom rack. One light
nylon bag. I did spend "poundage" by installing a Brooks B68 and
Greenfield kickstand. I can lift it, but it is heavier than my more bare
AHomerHilsen.

The *ride*, though, is light--light and breezy. My old "lightened up"
Appaloosa probably weighed about the same, and it rode great, but not the
light and breezy ride of the Platy.

If you're ever on the eastern side of the state, I'm in Philadelphia and
wouldn't mind letting your wife test my 55cm Platy.

As far as kickstands are concerned, I did try the single leg kick stand
that came with my Big Dummy long tail cargo bike, however, it did not
 work.
The Big Dummy's extra length is in the extra long chain stay whereas the
Platypus's extra length is in every part of the geometry being stretched
out. I also purchased a Pletscher twin kickstand, however it appears that
the kickstand plate on the Platypus is built only for a single kick stand.
Has anyone had any luck getting the twin on the Platypus, or should I just
shell out and get one of the recommended kickstands from Riv? If so, does
someone recommend a specific model for the Platypus?

 Thanks! - HH

I am using Tektro R559's and using the 42mm Baby Shoe Pass by Rene Herse.
They measure 40mm on these Velocity Quills.

Re: [RBW] Re: Platypus Questions

2022-01-09 Thread Eric Daume
With the extra tubing, the Platypus will definitely be a heavier frame than
your Sam, and likely similar or heavier to the Atlantis. Just guessing.

I'm also guessing your Trek (assuming a generic aluminum fitness hybrid)
will probably be lighter.

Hi Everyone, I have been enjoying my 60cm Platypus since I received it
in October. On rides, I have been loving the extra long top tube, however,
it has made the bike unwieldy when it is in storage, on the repair stand or
locked up. Anyone else having these issues? Anyone have any suggestions for
 1. a good kickstand, and 2. a good position on the repair stand? Thanks!

As far as kickstands are concerned, I did try the single leg kick stand
that came with my Big Dummy long tail cargo bike, however, it did not work.

 Thanks! - HH

[RBW] Re: Platypus Questions

2022-01-09 Thread Philip Barrett
I'm with your wife here! Certainly not a weight-weenie but a lighter bike
is more fun to ride, feels more lively and doesn't bum you out on the
hills. My personal feeling is that around 28 to 30lbs built up gives you a
sweet venn between a rideable weight with the parts you want and not
spending a ludicrous sum.

The typical Rib factory builds are, to my mind, overly heavy and come in at
around 28lbs, sans frameset! Those Kenda tires are 5lbs a set & the
double-Silver crankset is 2.5lbs alone! Don't tell them I told you this but
a 53cm Platypus frame & fork is 9lbs so you can work backwards from there.

Some helpful weight tips IMHO are;

   - 1x Crankset: if you don't need the ratios ditch the front derailleur
   - I use the Silver as a single with a Wolf-Tooth 42 ring, 11-34 on the
   rear, saves weight & money
   - Lightweight tires: I'm running the Rene Hearse Loup Loup (650b) at
just over 1.5lbs for the pair with the standard casing, Jan is a tire
evangelist and albeit pricey, he builds fantastic rubber
   - Wheels: good, light wheels make all the difference in the world (less
rotational mass) - a set of mid-line Velocity wheels (another great
company) will save you 1.5lbs over the Hands-On typically supplied with a
   Rivendell build

All said & done, my Platypus is 29lbs with a Nitto front rack & Wald
basket, Brooks saddle & a small pouch for a tube & repair kit. Yes I could
go lower but the cost/benefit ratio then begins to tip drastically.

Even my lightened Platypus is close to the limit of the Park folding stand,
it's much about the length as anything else but add in the extra 5-8lbs of
the typical Riv build up and you're really pushing it.

As long as the seatpost is tight in the frame and the clamp is tight on the
post you should be good. My very long Platy-ish custom is the same way in
my Park stand, those wheels are wa out there and you're going to get a

It's BEAUTIFUL and even better, COMFORTABLE! It took me awhile to get my
Platy "just so."

BTW, before I found this group about five years ago, I didn't know one
could just change stems or handlebars to get a more comfortable ride. I
sold my last bike (pre-Riv) because I had to reach forward too much and
that bothered my neck. My ignorance became my (Riv) gain!

[RBW] Re: Platypus Questions

2022-01-09 Thread Rusty Click

Another question...How much does the Platypus weigh? When I see pictures,
especially of Leah's beautiful bike, it seems to be exactly what my wife
describes as the bike she wants. When I offer to look for one to replace
the Tr*k we bought in desperation this past year, she says she doesn't want
that heavy of a bike. She may be projecting my Atlantis and Sam Hillborne
builds onto the Platy.

Then I’ll suggest the Silver Comet/Chief Ladiga trail out of Atlanta, if
you want a paved trail.
https://groups.google.com/g/bicycletouring/c/cFpcvUWqzkA

Typically high 40’s, low 50’s for temperatures, though it is getting below
freezing at night right now. The last significant snow I remember was 2017.
On the plus side, Atlanta is easy to get to. On the minus side, the trail
is only 96 miles long.

[RBW] Re: Brooks Saddle on a Clem

2022-01-09 Thread Roberta
Congratulations on the Clem! Did you get the step thru model? It rides
like a Cadillac.

The B67 is wide and sprung; the B17 is less wide and not sprung. The B68
(hard to find, but you can get used) is like the B67 but not sprung; the
Flyer is like the B17 but sprung. The Flyer/B17 drops off on the sides,
while the B68/B67 are flatter.

Do you want sprung or not sprung? So do you want wider or not quite as
wide?I'm not familiar with the SQ Lab, so cannot contrast that to the
Brooks saddles mentioned here.

I used to ride on B17, Flyer and Selle Anatomica (both cut out and not) and
found all perfectly fine and was happy with all these for years. I did
like the Flyer best on my Appaloosa to help cushion the bumpy roads here,
with the Selle Anatomica on my Homer my next favorite. Then, I tired a B67
and B68. These wider models are better (perfect) for *my *sits bones, so I
now have B68s on my Homer and Platy and a B67 on a Handsome She-Devil
short-chain-stay errand/lock up bike. It is amazing how the springs even
out the ride, without noticing any bounce, but the long wheelbase of your
Clem might be doing that enough for you already.

I think if you get your preference (sprung or not), and correct width
(wider nor less wide), you'd be happy with any of the above. Perhaps you
can find the width of the SQ Lab saddle to help you decide on the saddle
width needed; then you just need your preference.

Roberta

Re: [RBW] Re: XL Susie Handlebar dilemma

2022-01-09 Thread Davey Struthers
I'm also in this boat, 5'8 long inseam went for the large because I wanted
29 wheels.
I have a crust bj stem 31.8 30mm that I'm thinking might work with
tumbleweed bars I have, could be too short though. I'd also like the crust
ui stem or any of the analog options, I'm also just guessing what the reach
might be, assuming that it will be loong for me!
I do like the look of the more traditional riv hilli builds (mostly gus's)
on insta with tosco bullmoose but also the newer builds with short stems
and less sweep bars, so I'm torn and too excited to just wait to sit on it
and see!
Hopefully faceplater stems are magically in stock when the frames arrive!

Cheers
Dave

[RBW] Brooks Saddle on a Clem

2022-01-09 Thread Richard Rose
Good Morning folks. So, I need a saddle for my new Clem. FYI, I have a SQ
Lab saddle on my Jones 29 and am very comfortable. But it is kind of ugly.
So, thinking of Giving a Brooks a try. B67 or B17? Pretty upright position
for this old man, Bosco bar with 85mm stem. Only move hands forward for a
short break or reprieve from a headwind. Suggestions welcome.

Re: [RBW] Re: Ron's Ortho Bars in stock at Crust

2022-01-09 Thread Richard Rose
I never noticed this Crust bar before. But, since my (first ever) new
conversation seems to be in a holding pattern.., my new to me Clem came with a
65cm wide Tosco bar (similar) with 31.8 clamp size that is simply too wide for
me. I also have the 31.8 FacePlater stem in 135 length - too long for me. These
will both be for sale as soon as I am allowed to post them. New ones are
already on their way from Rivendell.

[RBW] New Clem & Group usage issues & possible stem / bar swap?

2022-01-09 Thread Richard Rose
Yeah, so first thing first; I left my house at 7:30 this morning and drove
300 round trip miles from Toledo, Ohio to Midland, Michigan & back. I was
home at 1:00. Quick trip to bring home this Clem. I would post some nice
pics except it is pretty inconvenient as the pics are on my phone & I
cannot start a new conversation from my phone. Frustrating.
But, the Clem (first Riv) is lovely.
This brand new but second owner Clem comes with 135mm FacePlater 31.8 clamp
diameter stem and 65cm Tosco bar, both gorgeous! Alas the stem is WAY too
long for me and the bar may be too wide. So I am wondering if anyone might
be interested in a trade?
Also, does anyone find that with the relatively slack seat tube that you
require a zero offset post?
Happy to be here & thanks,
Richard

2022-01-09 Thread Richard Rose
I second the Cyclemeter suggestion. I was given a tip that if you operate it in
airplane mode it saves battery use. Also, you can set it to automatically
upload to Strava with the paid subscription which I highly recommend. And you
can upload routes as well though I have not tried to do so yet. I did the back
pocket thing for a long time - I finally got the quad lock and it’s pretty
great even though it does disturb the “clean” cockpit.
