[RBW] Re: Closet Sale - Nitto Racks and stem, Sugino Crank

2022-07-07 Thread Collin A
Alrighty, not too many nibbles on the listing, so I guess the prices were a
bit much. I've updated them below to basically cover shipping now. Also,
feel free to make offers you believe are fair!

1. *Nitto/Riv Basket Rack - $220 shipped*: In very good condition, and was
used on my Wife's Homer until she realized she disliked carrying stuff and
then I carried our picnic and beach supplies on my Appaloosa. I used it on
and off with a basket exclusively and it worked very well for that purpose.
The top if the platform's nickel plating is still fully intact, with almost
no sign of a basket every being attached to it. I've got a slightly
modified (I cut a hole in it to make room for my lights) basket that I can
include as well to get you rolling if you don't already have a basket.

2. *Nitto 32R rear rack - $200 shipped*: Again, a beautiful nitto rack with
little use. I used it on a couple tours/trips, but it is in great
condition. Has provisions for a rear light and has a separate deck for a
top load and panniers.

3. *Sugino XD Triple Crank with 50/40/25 chainrings 170mm - $60 shipped: *Older
sugino crank that has been well loved on an old commuter that has long
since been converted to SS (yay flatlands of Sacramento), but with newer
used-but-not-worn chainrings. Tapers and threads are in working condition.
Standard chainring spacing too, not the slightly weird offset ones of the
newer sugino cranks that require sugino-only chainrings.

4. *Nitto Tallux Stem 120mm length and 25.4 clamp - $40 shipped*: Another
well-loved piece of gear that has lived on 3 Rivendells now! That means
that there are some markings along the stem showing previous insertion
heights...not the prettiest, but doesn't affect the function of the stem
obviously. Photos are of it on my commuter still, but it is ready to ship
out.

My middle brother's passion is photography, and yes, he takes amazing
images, too - he loves the fall colors. Your photos of summers in
Tennessee are inspirational: my wife and I just might have to plan a
cyclo-touring trip to check out those sights.

I recall my older sister buying Paul Simon's "There Goes Rhymin' Simon" LP
(yeah, 33-1/3rd) BITD. *Kodachrome *- a classic!!

[RBW] Re: New 650b Rims from Crust

2022-07-07 Thread Lance Terry
I’ve been using the 700c version of these for a few months on several
different bikes. The rear did go out of true not too long after I got them.
I was as kind of surprised, but trued them up and no problems since. I
liked the price point too with the front hub. I was able to set them up
tubeless with no problems either.

I have a pair of the 700c complete wheelsets and I probably put them
through more rough stuff than they were intended to be on.

I've ridden them for about 500-600 miles, about 40% gravel (nothing
super rough) and 60% road in the Oakland/Berkeley Hills. I ride my bikes
kind of hard, with a lot of out of the saddle, high torque efforts. I'm
never riding any trails that I'd be more comfortable on a front suspension
bike on. The wheels were machine built, so they went out of true rather
quickly which was expected. At ~200 miles, I gave them a little touch true
to keep them laterally true. But shortly after (~70 miles later), they
 went
out of true again, and I attributed this to my lack of experience truing
wheels, it being machine-built wheel, how light the rim is, and/or how
 hard
 i'm pushing them.

An acquaintance mentioned that he had to true his wheelset about 5
times before they stayed true. I'm not super well equipped to true wheels
appropriately, so this would have gotten expensive for me to get a shop to
do this regularly, so I just got them detensioned/retensioned by a trusted
wheel builder. The wheel builder mentioned that the rear hub is a bit
crunchy already and he suggested I replace the bearings and clean out the
internals to get 'em smooth again. I wasn't thrilled to hear that, but
 it's
 all good.

Anyways, the wheels are light and really responsive, I like how quickly
they spin up, and they're priced really well. But since I'm not a
wheelbuilder-type, I think this is the last machine-built wheelset I ever
buy. The wheels were pretty, light, and cheap-ish. But as a friend says,
strong, light, cheap; you can only pick two.

[RBW] Re: New 650b Rims from Crust

2022-07-07 Thread Drew Henson
I have a pair on a fairly new crust romanceur, and i like them quite a bit.
rear hub is no louder than a white industry hub i have on another bike. I
really like the SP generator hub, i think it's a good value.

I am curious if the spoke tensioning holds up. I probably have about 100
miles on them.

[RBW] Re: New 650b Rims from Crust

2022-07-07 Thread Nikko in Oakland
I have a pair of the 700c complete wheelsets and I probably put them
through more rough stuff than they were intended to be on.

I've ridden them for about 500-600 miles, about 40% gravel (nothing super
rough) and 60% road in the Oakland/Berkeley Hills. I ride my bikes kind of
hard, with a lot of out of the saddle, high torque efforts. I'm never
riding any trails that I'd be more comfortable on a front suspension bike
on. The wheels were machine built, so they went out of true rather quickly
which was expected. At ~200 miles, I gave them a little touch true to keep
them laterally true. But shortly after (~70 miles later), they went out of
true again, and I attributed this to my lack of experience truing wheels,
it being machine-built wheel, how light the rim is, and/or how hard i'm
pushing them.

An acquaintance mentioned that he had to true his wheelset about 5 times
before they stayed true.
I wasn't thrilled to hear that, but it's

I am interested in selling my size 55 Bleriot complete. It is a lovely
bike to ride. I have the gearing set for steep dirt roads, at which it
excels. It rides similar to a Soma San Marcos - very fluid - with a bit
 more tire clearance (42 v 38).

I purchased the Bleriot from a list member in 2017. Our deal was for
$1200 including shipping and minus saddle, stem, and handlebars. I am
hoping to sell it for essentially the same price with a stem and
 handlebars
included, along with a new freewheel. Sale price is $1,000 complete,
including professional packing, plus actual charges for bike flights
shipping. Shipping to be determined once packed and the ship-to address is
known. I am open to offers if someone wants the frame minus specific
components or for local pick-up in Boulder/Denver area.

This bike has ample visible beausage - lots of scratches and dings --
without any serious damage. The only trouble it has given me is that the
rear brake hanger can get in the way of the seat bolt binder. I have to
position it very carefully to make sure the seat post does not slip.

 Lots of pictures here

 .

 *Details*:
Size 55 measured center to center (which is a good fit for my 82 pbh)
Saddle as pictured is 71 1/2 , measured diagonally from the center of
 the crank arm
 Geometry chart

 Velocity Synergy 650B 32h rims
Standover about 81 Fatty Rumpkin tires (great tires! plenty of life
 left in them)
Shimano Dynamo front hub DH 3N71
 B Lumotec Lyt (25 lumens)
 Phil Wood rear hub
 Campagnolo-Brev-Int headset
Phil Wood bottom bracket (according to previous owner)
 Technomic stem 7
Nitto handlebars -- likely B136 Rando Touring Bar size 42
 (very

 comfortable)
 Sugino XD triple 48x36x24
 Shimano Sora FD
7 speed freewheel (not a free hub / cassette) SunRun 14x34 (relatively
 new)
 Paul Components center-pull brakes
 Shimano XT RD
 Tektro brake levers
 Shimano bar-end shifters

Excluded items: saddle, pedals and tail-light
Bottle cages - optional (no charge either way)

 Happy to answer any questions.

[RBW] Re: Susie's Limits

2022-07-07 Thread Johnny Alien
IMO if the weight difference between a Susie and a Gus is as small as
Rivendell says and there is no ride difference as stated by Rivendell and
this is really a problem then they would only sell the Gus. The Susie is
still a robust frame. I think most of the "get this if you weigh less"
marketing is just to make a similar frame desirable to people that don't do
the tough stuff but like the look of it. With a rider at 150 I would think
that should not have been too much weight on that frame. But I literally
know absolutely nothing about frame design.

 Distance: 35 mi, total.

The KalHaven Trail is a historic rail trail that travels through a
wooded area all the way to Lake Michigan. We will be riding from Kalamazoo
to the halfway point, which is Bloomingdale. There we will refresh
ourselves in the town’s quaint little park; you can bring refreshments or
buy them at the little country store across from the park. From there we
will head back to Kalamazoo and rendezvous at Latitude 42, a local brewery
that has a patio so we can eye the bikes and enjoy a meal.

The address for Latitude 42 is:
 6101 W Main St

 Kalamazoo, MI 49009

Hope to see you there! Message here with questions.

[RBW] Riv Handlebar choices for my Kona Sutra Conversion

2022-07-07 Thread Randall Evans
I thought I wanted to go back to drop handlebars after owning a few hybrid
bikes. I bought a Kona Sutra which I really like but I have come to the
realization that I don't like drop handle bars because of the straight arms
and the weight on my wrists. I raised them up 2" with a stem extender and I
still find my self in an uncomfortable position with limited positions for
my hands and the lower position is too low for extended periods of time. I
mostly ride on roads but would like to still be able to go on trails near
our house.
The handlebars I am considering are: Choco, Tosco and the Albatross. I
think if I lowered the stem to it original height and had a bar with some
rise I could get some slant on the end grips. I would like to try the Tosco
but its out of stock for months, so I am leaning towards the Albatross
which I can get now. I want to reuse my bar end shifters but I think I will
get smaller brake levers to mount half way down the straight bars.
Anybody converted a Kona Sutra gravel bike to Riv Alt. Bars?

Re: [RBW] Re: long wheelbase, Hillibikes + tray racks

2022-07-07 Thread Brian Turner
Now that I have my Gus frame in-hand, I can confirm that the wheelbase of
the Medium (54cm) frame is 50". Kuat's specs for my rack, the NV 2.0, says
it will carry bikes with wheelbases up to 50" with the front wheel cradles
in the "down" position... so fingers crossed that spec is correct in
practice. I'll need to wait until I can get a wheelset on it to test to
make sure, but at least now I'm hopeful!

My apologies if this has been asked before, but has anyone had any

hitch-mounted tray rack such as the Kuat NV 2.0 (my rack)? I'm about to
take ownership of a Gus very soon, and I'm wondering if there's any chance
it'll work somehow. Looking at the numbers, it doesn't seem like these
bikes would possibly fit, as the rear wheel would stick out too far for
 the
retaining straps to effectively grab the rear wheel.

My next question is, has anyone found a way to rig this type of rack so
that it can safely carry these long wheelbase bikes?

 thanks!

2022-07-07 Thread Brian Turner
This color is incredible! Nice build. I just received a NOS Gus from the
previous batch (mine is Riv blue), and I'm kinda curious as to why the
little instrument graphics were moved to the chainstays - particularly the
driveside stays - since folks routinely wrap the stay to protect the paint
from chain slap. If I had one of these newer models, I would be bummed to
have to cover up those cool little graphics.

[RBW] Re: Craigslist (and others) Bikes For Sale: 3

2022-07-07 Thread A. D. M.

Interesting, Joe. Looks like most All-rounders did not use the “custom”
head tube lugs, but at least a few did.

Wasn’t the Frank Jones Sr advertised as the only production bike to use
those? How often did this happen? How would one tell an all-rounder apart
from a custom?

Best,

Hey Nikko, I am in fact! It's the 700C version.

[RBW] Re: Susie's Limits

2022-07-07 Thread Brian Turner
I'm guessing all those heavy containers filled with liquid (presumably)
concentrated in that one central area of the frame created a lot of flex
and stress compared to all the weight up front and on the rear. I bet that
thing was flexing like crazy with every pedal stroke. I tried to find it,
but it reminded me of a photo posted on one of the Riv blogs a while back
of an orange Susie that was loaded down probably more than any other bike
I've seen in my life - it even had a skateboard stowed on it. I remember
thinking when I saw it, "I'm not sure that frame was meant to carry that
much weight"... and it looks like the guy who broke his frame was loaded
down similarly.

I like to load me bikes down, and I occasionally ride some rowdy terrain
with heavy loads. That's why I went with the Gus!

[RBW] Seeking Sacramento-Based Bike Purchase Help!

2022-07-07 Thread Jordan Rosenblum
Hi folks,

I barely post in this group, so feel a little awkward about asking for help
from the community, but here goes...

I am hoping someone in the Sacramento area can help facilitate the purchase
of a Hunqapillar fork that's for sale there. The seller is shy to ship, and
I live in Portland, Oregon.

I am looking for someone willing to drop it off at a local bike shop. I
haven't looked into a specific shop that would be willing to pack and ship
yet, so if folks have suggestions for that, they are more than welcome.

I would be happy to pay for your assistance, send you a bag of coffee from
a favorite Portland roaster, or simply pay it forward with good Karma!

Thanks!
Jordan

Re: [RBW] Susie's Limits

2022-07-07 Thread Brian Turner
I see three 64oz bottles and what appears to be a 36 or 40oz bottle. So, if
they were full of liquid, and accounting for the weight of the bottles
themselves, you're looking at approx. 20 lbs. just in that area of the bike
alone. I'm no engineer, but that seems like a lot of excess weight to me -
for a bike that has specific stated weight limitations. It also looks like
he's carrying 1.5 - 2x that amount elsewhere on his bike. Is it an
excessive amount of stuff? Who's to say. Whenever I'm riding, I'm typically
bikepacking. The last 5-day trip I did, my entire gear weight (including
bags + water) was less than 25 lbs.
