[RBW] Re: What frame protection tape do you use with long term success ?

2022-11-30 Thread Ed Carolipio
I use the ISC Surface Protection ("Helicopter") tape. Good flexibility and
adhesiveness but peels off easily and doesn't leave a residue. I can't
comment on it being weathered but it stays flexible for years, doesn't come
off, and doesn't yellow with age. I just buy a 1" wide roll and it lasts
forever. http://www.racerstape.com/rtp.html

I used some 3M tape meant for wrapping car hoods and fenders for protection. I cut it into pieces that fit around the tubes of my bike. I primarily wrapped the main triangle of one bike to keep frame bags from killing the paint. This tape applies fairly easily and seems to last without fading.  I bought mine here:3M Scotchgard Hood Bumper Clear Paint Protection Bra Film Shield Vinyl Wrap 12"ebay.comRobert TilleySan Diego, CASent from my iPhoneOn Nov 30, 2022, at 9:09 PM, Kim Hetzel wrote:I am considering buying some clear frame protection tape to protect my Rivendell Clem Smith Jr. "L" while it is relatively still new. Great work, Marty. Thanks for sharing this with us. That's a nice big file,
too, great for printing at home with my Epson large format printer on nice
Hahnemuhle cotton rag paper :)

The most recent badges are done by Olivier Chételat, you can find the OC
initials hidden in all of his designs. He posts here from time to time. I
believe he also designed (or at least contributed heavily to) the 2014 Riv

[RBW] Re: Clem L vs Rosco Bebe

2022-11-30 Thread lconley
I own both, but I have never completed the Bebe build [everything done but
the brakes and chain-line (S-A 3 speed)], so not much help yet. I bought
the Bebe because of the long effective top tube. I have short legs and a
long torso and it seemed like it might be the ideal step through for bars
with a lot of backsweep. I also have a Betty Foy, Rosco Bubbe Medium
Mountain Mixte and the one and only Keven's Bike true mixte. Some day I may
not be able to swing my leg over and I wanted to cover all the options on
Rivendell step-thrus. I never intended for the Bebe to be a baby bike, it's
my long torso bike.

[RBW] Re: Cockpit Quandaries - Friction bar ends for a new rider

2022-11-30 Thread Paul Clifton
Thanks Pam. I also think friction bar end shifters on Albatross bars is the
most pleasurable way to shift. It just feels right to me. I'll take them
with me and let her check them out.

If this bike works out, I'd love to send her up to Charlotte for one of
your classes. She's in Atlanta, so not as close to Charlotte as Augusta,
but it's still an easy drive. There are a few organizations that do similar
classes in Atlanta, but I'd have to look them up again, and they don't
happen very regularly. But she is in a good spot to bike commute a couple
days a week, when the weather is nice and her butt gets used to a saddle.
It would probably be 15 miles round trip, but 13 of that would be
completely separated rail trail (the Beltline (if you've heard of it) - and
not the busy part, but the pretty and still undeveloped part). I'd be
pretty envious of anyone taking that cruise every day. She's said she'd
like to do it, and I'll do what I can to facilitate.

[RBW] Re: WTB/ISO Crust Juan Martin Bars for 1993 Bridgestone XO-2

2022-11-30 Thread Emmet Sheehan
Hi Chris, I think the singles bar is a 25.4 clamp, my current stem is 26.0.
If I'm swapping stems I may go for a 31.8 to get something decently wider.
I have really been enjoying hitting all the rough stuff on this bike.
Thanks for the offer though! RE: fork It's definitely tight spacing and
looks a little goofy. Eyeing up the kory york forks for some wider
clearance. I have a friend with an XO-4 that he initially crimped the
original unicrown fork, but he eventually had Ellis cycles build him a new
one( he has 26x2.3" thunder burts in there now).

Cheers!

Re: [RBW] Clem L vs Rosco Bebe

2022-11-30 Thread Richard Rose
I’ve not ridden a Rosco Bebe. However, your description of the ride & fit qualifies mirror my Clem low experience, exactly. And, though I might like to get a Gus or Susie for the same reasons as yours, I would be hard pressed to part with the Clem. Probably not much help but, that’s all I got.Sent from my iPhoneOn Nov 30, 2022, at 6:11 PM, Paul Clifton wrote:Has anyone ridden both a Clem L and a Rosco Bebe enough to comment on the differences? My bebe has long since outgrown the Yepp Mini front seat, and I'm now using the Bebe to drag a copilot.Part of me feels like I should pass the Bebe on to a new parent, but another part of me wants to just keep it. Re: [RBW] Re: Annual Head-Badge Poster Update

2022-11-30 Thread Marty Gierke, Stewartstown PA
Badges have been done by different artists over the years, I have no idea
if there is any way to ID who did what - Grant would know. I've had good
luck printing at Walgreens in the past. Bring the file on a thumb drive or
set it up on line. The Hi Res full size print is large - it's 300dpi - so
plan accordingly.

Heron was a bit of an outlier - yes a different company but a big dose of
the DNA of Rivendell at the time was baked in. Later on, SOMA also built
bikes that were advised/designed by Grant, but not quite the same thing.
Early in the poster series Grant mentioned Heron belonged, but SOMA not so
much.

[RBW] Clem L vs Rosco Bebe

2022-11-30 Thread Paul Clifton
Has anyone ridden both a Clem L and a Rosco Bebe enough to comment on the
differences?

My bebe has long since outgrown the Yepp Mini front seat, and I'm now using
the Bebe to drag a copilot.

Part of me feels like I should pass the Bebe on to a new parent, but
another part of me wants to just keep it. The ride is phenomenal, and
really unlike anything else I've ever ridden and I doubt I'd ever get it
back if I let it go.

The 68 degree seat tube angle is really comfortable, and the really long
effective top tube puts so much bike out in front of the rider that it
feels like it really takes the lead. It's absurdly stable on fast descents
and carves corners without any skittishness.

If I was going to sell it, I'd probably replace it with a Clem as my kid
hauling townie, since I'd like to keep my Gus set up for rowdy single track
fun.

So I'm curious if anyone can actually compare the two.

[RBW] Re: Rear Dynamo wiring pics / examples? non-fender

2022-11-30 Thread brizbarn
Thanks for the info. I also like helicopter tape that Bob posted above.
Makes sense about the pclamp on the micro light, might as well make it more
durable, would be nice if they just sold it with a metal clamp. It would
be cool if Blue Lug Koma lights had a dynamo version. The toggle of the
Sinewave Beacon seems awesome. I just had a B Avy PLus N light fail, and
I think it was due to the on/off button breaking. That makes sense about
just pointing the light down a bit, seems like that would work for city
streets. I just discovered the Kasai Trail Beam, seems like nice more
affordable beacon. I don't see any rear wiring or a rear light in the pic
you posted on the bike with the green seat roll and basket, am I missing
something?

[RBW] Re: First Ride of the Platypus

2022-11-30 Thread Mike Packard
Congrats on the bike and thanks for the ride report. I'm jealous you have
access to such lovely riding close to home. I love "cruisy zoomy" and think
it should be used more often. To help, I propose some more conjugations.

- "cruisy zooms" : I got a case of the cruisy zooms this morning before
work and had to go for a ride.
- "cruisily zoomeried" : Last night on the way home I cruisily zoomeried
down some side streets.
- "crusiferous zoomerino" : ???

Ditto on the Kool Stop City pads in salmon. That's what I'm using with the
V-brakes on my Appaloosa. As Steven says, they're short enough that they
don't hit the fork blades when opening the brake for wheel removal, making
it easy to drop out a fat-tyred wheel without deflating the tyre.

Re: [RBW] First Ride of the Platypus

2022-11-30 Thread Doug H.
Nice build and ride report. I feel similarly about my Clem L in ride
feeling and characteristics. It is long, upright and comfy. I call it my
Clem Cruiser because I always feel like I'm cruising around on it. When
someone asks what kind of bike I have I say an all-around cruiser. Not sure
how to categorize it.

Thanks, Mike - I'm in Chelmsford (just south of Lowell). It's a pretty
standard NE suburban area but one thing this part of MA does well is having
lots of public "open space" land dotted throughout various towns. None of
them are very large but you can string them together and make some really
great loops.

Thanks, Ryan - looking forward to seeing your wife's bike as it takes shape

I guess the best way to describe the ride could be "cruisy zoomy", it's a very easy going yet zippy ride.It is supremely comfortable and can be a very upright cruiser, though even when ridden this way feels responsive. My setup with a 120mm stem puts me at a ~75 degree back angle with my hands fully rearward on the grips of the Tosco bar, perfect for taking in the scenery and appearing approachable when encountering dog walkers on multi-use trails.I spend most of my time with the heels of my palms on the front of the grips, palms over the brake lever clamps, fingers either loosely draped over or wrapped around the taped bends of the Tosco bar, giving about a 60 degree back angle. This is a good home base position for forward progress, still balanced enough to not put noticeable pressure on the hands.Moving my hands a bit forward, resting the heels of my palms on the brake lever clamps, and bending the elbows more gets me to a ~45 degree back angle to stretch out a bit or get lower in the face of wind. The forward flats of the bar are also usable when wanting to get to the same angle with less elbow bend and is nice option on open road sections, though I doubt I'll bother taping there.During standing efforts I can hold the bars back at the grips or up at the bends - both positions work fine and I found myself doing both in different places. In all positions the fit is roomy and the handling is responsive but not twitchy.I still haven't installed a front derailleur but a 46x34 low gear is enough to grunt up most of the short climbs on this route. I did opt to walk one short and steep pitch on a trail rather than manually changing to the 30t ring.I also haven't settled the front carrying method yet but am leaning towards a 137 basket and bag. For this ride temps were in the upper 30Fs  and wanting a place for a layer and extra pair of gloves, I borrowed the Swift Catalyst from my wife's bike to hold those things and my pump. I do plan on putting a bottle cage on the bike but the stem bag is a really convenient spot for the primary water bottle.A fantastic first ride (including a deer sighting!) for a fantastic bike.I took a few photos to commemorate the occasion:(Our local open space stewards decorate trees throughout town lands this time of year; it's kind of a scavenger hunt.)(Excuse the poor photo - this guy was a ways off after he and two does dashed across the path in front of me.)-Dave (5'11"' on a 60cm Platy in Massachusetts)

Re: [RBW] Your Favorite V-Brake Pads?!

2022-11-30 Thread Glen
Has anyone heard an update on Grant's short brake pad project with Kool
Stop? He wrote about it in a blog post years ago. I'm old school and use a
fork mount roof rack or I remove my front wheel when loading into the back
of my wagon. Being able to easily clear the pads with an inflated tire
would be so nice and this shorted pad would make life easier.

https://www.rivbike.com/blogs/grant-petersens-blog/gbw-sign-up

*BRAKE PAD BUMMEROONIE might be ending soon*
*Beginning in about 1990, cantilever brake makers started flipping the
shoepad from outside the arm to inside the arm, as a way to I don't know,
maybe reduce leverage and flex that was never a problem, anyway? But in
doing so, the pads moved so close to the seat stays and fork blades that
when you release the pads to remove a wheel, sometimes you can't, because
the pads don't open up enough. The frame may have plenty of room for, say,
a 2.4mm tire, but the brake pads, blocked by the frame and fork, don't let
the wheel come out.*
*Older cantilevers are better in that way. The only new one that works is
the Shimano CX50. The CX70 is discontinued. The Dia-Compe canti works in
the front, but is 2mm short in back.*
*We have faint hope but not zero hope that Shimano will redesign its
V-brakes. And--let me say this and please go along with it---Shimano
V-brakes are amazing and fantastic all in one, and this micro-bugger
doesn't wreck them. I don't think they'll do anything, though. They're too
market-driven, and the market wants discs.*
*BUT HERE'S SOME POSSIBLE GOOD NEWS: Kool-Stop (a brake shoepad maker in
Washington state), is aware of the issue and has agreed to study it a bit
and see how reasonable it would be to make a pad that clears with existing
brakes. We carved up some pads to figure out the dimensions and sent along
photos. They can do that themselves, but still--we are nearly begging them
to do this, and that's where it sits. I'm torn between suggesting you
contact Tim and Randy there to express your support, and NOT, out of
concern for how irritating that might be, and how they might not want to do
us any favors then, even tho it would be a favor to at least 50,000 other
riders in the bargain.*
*FLASH: They got right on it, and we'll see some shoes in a few DAYS. Go,
Tim and Randy!*

[RBW] Re: Derailleur precision and wear characteristics for 11+ speed systems

2022-11-30 Thread Ben Adrian
Campy Ekar is machanical only and has 13 speeds. I've heard nothing but
good reviews (also, how high price comments). My guess is that they just
have a lot of cable pull and the derailleur is a lower ratio than other
mechanicals.

There's also the Ratio Technology retro-fit kit that turns SRAM 10 or 11
speed mechanical into a 12 speed with their SRAM MTB mechanical standard,
so one can run road shifters up front and mechanical 12speed MTB in the
back. I've also heard good things about this.

I think the problems mainly come when people try to make a 1.7:1 ratio
derailleur (like Shimano 7-8-9 speeds) work on higher numbers of cogs.

My experience with 11 speed so far (SRAM Force brifters, derailer, and cog,
with a few different chains) is about 10k km, in not terribly challenging
environmental conditions. The biggest detractor to shifting performance has
been chain wear. The SRAM 11sp chain I first used wore very quickly (as in
a few thousand km) and it really degraded the shifting. Subsequent YBN
chain seems to be wearing better. I just bought a new one and cleaned it
and bathed it in Silca super secret wax, so we'll see what that does for
longevity. It certainly makes it clean and quiet, once the initial excess
is worn off. I have not experienced any issues with cables getting full of
junk, even after a lengthy 2-day session on crushed gravel trails.

I also have a recent experience with a Campy 9-speed setup. I had a hawk
take me out by trying to fly between my front wheel and frame. I went down
on my right side and bent the derailer hanger a bit. Let me tell you, that
sure ruined the indexing!

Oh yes, I've done that a zillion times, tho' I used small auto hose clamps.
In fact, a few years ago, I rigged up a QR wire basket (from an Office
Depot office storage system) for the rear rack on my Dahon Hon Solo. IIRC,
I clamped a wood block to the underside of the basket shaped to fit snugly
into a space on the rack platform, and held the basket down with fore and
aft toe clips. Worked a treat and carried 2 full paper grocery sacks.

[RBW] Derailleur precision and wear characteristics for 11+ speed systems

2022-11-30 Thread Patrick Moore
Ted's remark raises an interesting question. I for one didn't think that so
very closely spaced cogs might require fine tolerances that exceed the
everyday capabilities of shift-by-cable systems, what with friction
changing with wear and dirt.

So, question: Is it generally true that above 10 speeds or perhaps 11 cable
systems don't work very well, or at least, shifting quality degrades
quickly compared to systems with fewer cogs and wider tolerances?

I recall using a Cyclo Benelux pullchain rd* to shift 2 cogs hacked onto a
SA AW driver; to take an extreme case, I can't imagine that rd indexing 4
cogs let alone 12. It did index 2: all t'way for'ard and all t'way
backward. (Kidding.)

So, again, to sum up: do 12 and 13 speed systems require and lock you in to
electric shifting?

That is a question, not an implicit value judgment.

[RBW] Annual Head-Badge Poster Update

2022-11-30 Thread Marty Gierke, Stewartstown PA
Had some time to update the poster, and made a number of changes to keep
things interesting. Hope you all like it.

   1. Highlighted the very first Rivendell badge (cast pewter) front and
   center and larger than life.
   2. Swapped in a new version of the Riv badge in purple at the top left -
I had not seen this one before. I like it!
   3. Brought back the Heron badge. I LOVE it!
   4. Swapped in a different version of the Roadeo badge - this time in
   blue.
   5. Added the latest badge: the "Roaduno" even though it's not being sold
   yet.
   6. Enlarged the entire poster to 18X24 to accommodate all the badges.
Frames are standard for this size print.

I keep thinking this will be the last update, but if RIvendell continues
to add new models I'm duty bound to plug ahead.

As always, here's the link to the hi-res file on Flickr. Download and print
to your heart's content! Enjoy the holiday season and every ride throughout

[RBW] FS- Large Hubbuhhubbuh tandem, $1800.

2022-11-30 Thread Kainalu V. -Brooklyn NY
Hey folks,
Economics and non-use force sale of a would be beloved bicycle.
I rode it solo a bit, less than 30 miles, and did a couple very short
jaunts with a kiddo.
It’s fairly swank, with a beautiful and expensive Velocity wheel set with a
SON dyno hub.
I had big plans, but they relied too heavily upon the hope that others in
the family would fall in love with the thing.
I put clear helicopter tape on the top tube out back to facilitate feet
upon it while legs were growing, and routed the brake cable away from that
same section of top tube. Works like a charm.
Never got as far as hooking up a light or connecting the front shifter, but
I’ll include both a light and a front shifter in the sale.
Hoping for a local sale, can deliver in and around New York and the
surrounding areas, and I’m happy to $hip it.
Photos- https://photos.app.goo.gl/tex6dqhe3pXZN83a7
And I’ll be keeping my captain saddle

Thanks much
-Kai

Re: [RBW] Widest tires on green Quickbeam?

I have 42 Soma Grand Vitesse on currently. I tried Big Apples once but
couldn't get them to fit. I wonder if clearance is much difference between
colors at all? I have a pair of Snoqualmies from my recently sold Homer
that I will try once the weather gets nicer. In the winter I run 35
Marathon supremes and fenders and its worked great. I have Belgiums so I
suppose I am maxing out width as well with those.

Re: [RBW] Re: Book recommendations for learning how to build up a bike

2022-11-30 Thread Stephanie A.
Thank you so much for all that you have shared.

Okay...I'll try to get by with all of the online resources you've shared
and search through the libraries around me first. My brain likes pictures
and charts

[RBW] Re: Cockpit Quandaries - Friction bar ends for a new rider

2022-11-30 Thread ascpgh
Tendencies of cleaning, adjusting and using what's present versus replacing
30 year old OEM parts with things you have, know or prefer may be genetic.
People cannot help themselves if the trait is expressed.

I know thirty years is a long time for a bike sold as new to migrate the
landscape but I did sell many of that model and color up the road from you.
Those ratty RapidFire lower end shift units may have worked decently if
curated by museum staff but more than half of those delivered had the lower
button lever (stamped sheet metal) bent enough to interfere with the upper
button inside an otherwise pristine looking bike box. The way they
assembled the cockpit and placed it as tethered by the cables and housings
secured to the frame and rear wheel was culprit.

The resulting slight upward bend of the lower RapidFire shifter lever
produced either non function overlap or random bad shifting when an odd
thumb angle would incrementally be enough displacement to interfere with
the upper button lever's thumb pad. We would use a Crescent wrench on the
back of the grey plastic button where a horizontal reinforcing bar was
formed to bend the end of the lever and button back down and out of
interference range of the upper one. This only got us through the initial
warranty from the bike company since most of our bikes went to the woods
unlike 80% of the era nationally. We also didn't have room to store all of
the built bikes that had this factory and shipment problem.

Besides the very frequent shipping damage, those RadpidFire shifters were
strategically placed to be kneed into the same condition. Not to say these
were low end parts as they were OEM on $500-600 bikes, just that they were
an evolutionary step which for me could go back into the primordial ooze.
Bridgestone and Kona called the emperor naked this one and stuck with
things that work, not the latest stuff foisted on new bike buyers to beta
test.

That black plastic housing was about as weatherproof as a ragtop CJ Jeep in
a car wash, i.e. not the slightest. Worse than without the covers since
they collected and stored muck right at the pot metal toothed parts,
springs and pawls.

Do what you know and what's best for your friend with her input. and your
efforts I'm all about losing those detestable shifters. Those shifters, on
that bike (and some RockHoppers) sold many MB-6s to comparison shoppers at
our store.

[RBW] WTT RH Fleecer Ridge TC for RH Hatcher or Snoqualmie Pass

2022-11-30 Thread Tom Palmer
Hi all,
Looking for some fenderable tires for the Platypus. I have some low mile
standard caing Rene Herse fleecer Ridge knobbies to trade for some Rene
Herse slicks- either Hatcher or Snoqualmie Pass will work. It you have low
mil extralights, I will chip in some cash with the Fleecers.
Thanks!

Re: [RBW] Your Favorite V-Brake Pads?!

2022-11-30 Thread esoterica etc

I've been really happy with the Kool Stop e-bike pads that Riv sells:
https://www.rivbike.com/products/brake-pads-kool-stop-e-bike

They're nicely grippy and have been completely silent for me so far
(approximately 6-700 miles). They also seem to be thicker than regular Kool
Stops so they should last longer. I originally had them on my Atlantis (since
sold), but kept the v-brakes and put them on my BMC Monstercross when I first
built it up to see how they'd feel on it. I thought I'd eventually want to
switch over to cantis on the Monstercross but so far they've worked out great
for me and they're still going strong with no complaints.
