Re: [RBW] Re: New Sam Hillbornes

2022-12-01 Thread Ryan Stanis
Confirmed in the email sent out today, no geo changes from last batch. My
2018 Sam is 26.8, so as previously stated, not a new development for the
frame. Wish I didn't already have one, the lime olive is quite possibly my
favorite riv color I've seen, second maybe to the green Hunqapillars.

Own a wide selection of Road Runner bags and they have been my go to for
the last 5 years for sure. Burrito bags, tool rolls, backpacks. All great
stuff!

Don't miss the Comrad lightweight packable backpack. I bike everywhere and
travel everywhere with that packable bag. Folds up and can fit into a
bottle cage when not needed.

Happy to hear the feedback on their camera strap as I was eyeballing it and

[RBW] Re: New Sam Hillbornes

2022-12-01 Thread 'John Hawrylak' via RBW Owners Bunch
2 stand outs on this batch of Sam H's from the geo chart:

The seatpost is a 26.8mm, NOT a more standard 27.2mm. This indicates the
28.6mm seattube wall thickness is 0.8mm vs a more standard 0.7. The
Butted section wall is probably 1.1mm or thicker. Seems like Grant likes
thicker walls at the BB, as has been mentioned in a previous post. I do
not recall a 26.8mm seatpost in the past for the Sam H.

The Chain Stay LENGTH varies from 45.5cm (near standard) for a 48/51cm
frame to 48.5cm for a 60cm frame. Seems RBW is trying to locate everyone
at the same spot along the chain stay. This was mentioned in a previous
post, but in a funny way. Seems like they decided to go with it. Tall
riders may feel a change. Short riders less so.

Beautiful platypus! Hope to see you riding around MA-- I'm in Arlington and
often ride the Minuteman and Battle Road on my Homer. Less frequently ride
the Fells on my Jones.

I'm thinking of getting a frameset... I have all the parts for 650b build.
(Missed out on the first run, from which I had collected parts.)

Roberta,
For pedals, I've been really impressed with the MKS Bear Traps. I think I
purchased them from Riv, but I don't see them on the website anymore. They
are available at Analog:
https://analogcycles.com/products/mks-xc-bear-trap-iii?variant=40096168018097

They are big/supportive and comfortable for my size 10 foot. I've found
them to be grippy-enough without damaging soles. (I've logged many miles on
Thin Gripsters, VP Vice, MKS Sneaker pedals, and the nylon/Clem pedals.)

Good luck!

It's worth mentioning that they make bags for Velo Orange too!

Re: [RBW] Re: front deraileur dilemma

2022-12-01 Thread Patrick Moore
That front derailleur does have an exalted height above the big ring but I
gather that it shifts fine. I've left an LX fd in place when I removed the
out 46 t ring and replaced the middle 36 with a 38; the inner 24 remained.
It must have sat as high over the (now) outer 38 as yours above your outer
ring. I just adjusted the travel limit screw. It shifted as well between
the 38 and 24 as it did before between the 36 and the 24.

My current DA 7402 (I think it's "...02") sits high enough to just clear a
bash guard sized to hide a 46 t ring -- ie about the size of a 48 or so --
so the cage sits high indeed over the 42 t big ring. It still shifts wholly
unexceptionally.

Congratulations on the new Platy. I'll be reading the rest of your report
tonight, but the pictures are amazing.

Thanks for the bigger pedal at reasonable price suggestions. I had too
many screw pins dig into my shins and ruin sneakers, so I switched to Clem
pedals (nylon, I think), which I like almost perfectly except would like
wider platform. Does your pedal really not wreck the soles of shoes or
draw blood?

Re: [RBW] Re: New Sam Hillbornes

2022-12-01 Thread EGNolan
Brian asked "Anyone want to take any bets on whether or not they've made
any changes to the geometry and sizes available?"

My best guess, based on the location of the chainstay indentions is that
they've increased those to more closely match the rest of the lineup. I've
got a LCS (long chainstay) Cheviot, which I absolutely love, and a more
normal, but lengthy for the time Bleriot, which I also absolutely love. I
imagine there will be some folks bummed at not having shorter chainstay
options, but we all saw this coming (and they may have even said as much at
some point and I either didn't see it or forgot about it).

We're almost there.
I thought I was going silver till I saw how the olive turned out... hard
decisions to be made.

[RBW] Re: First Ride of the Platypus

2022-12-01 Thread DavidP
Thanks, Eric -

The pedals are similar to the Stamp pedals but instead of grub screw pins
(which I have on pedals on a couple of mountain bikes but are quite sharp
and can tear into casual shoes a bit much) they have more blunted,
star/torx shaped pins. The large platform is comfortable and the grip is
just fine for the intended riding. Amazon has a few (identical?) models:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B092V1XT5Y
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08JPNYCJL

The frame color is mermaid (it's from the November batch) and it is a
difficult color to capture, especially for my phone which took the photos
posted above. Over on the "How are you building up your Platypus?
"
thread I posted some photos from a camera that are a bit more nuanced in
the color reproduction. There are also comments on some of the components
in that thread.

At first I thought that, given the choice, lime olive would be my preferred
color for a Platypus but that I would be fine with the mermaid. As it turns
out I'm actually glad this round of frames didn't have a choice of color
because after receiving the frame the mermaid is it for me - such a
fantastic color.

Here's the build list (*not yet installed/pictured):

Frameset: Fall 2022 Rivendell Platypus, 60cm (10lbs frame/fork/headset),
mermaid

I might try to pick up a used dark gold Sam sometime in the next year or
