Re: [RBW] Rosco Mtn Mixte?

2022-12-17 Thread Paul Clifton
Brian, FWIW (not much, especially since this thread is about the Massive
Mountain Mixte) - but I think there were teens of the mediums made. They
ended up doing two runs of them, and one of them was at least 10 bikes. So
they're less scarce, but only slightly. The mediums used Appaloosa forks.

Re: [RBW] Rosco Mtn Mixte?

2022-12-17 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
Wow, my last few posts have been full of typos. Maybe I need to go dormant
again for a while… but I had to at least acknowledge my blatant repeat
offense at misspelling ROSCO as Roscoe. The backwards 3 in the Bubbe part
seems to have become ingrained enough in my mind that I falsely attribute
it to both halves of the name.

Re: [RBW] Rosco Mtn Mixte?

2022-12-17 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
Thanks, Leah, for the heads up for the long legged of us who happen to be
non-facebook-users! That is certainly Will’s Mega Roscoe MTN Mixte and I
think made in the single digits (I guess all sizes of the Roscoe Mixte were
down in single digits but can’t remember.). This size MTN Mixte was based
on forks for designed but never built 64 or maybe 66cm Hunqapillars (I
forget the exact size but it was bigger than the biggest made 62cm Hunq.)

If this were frame only and local I would definitely need to consider make
physical and financial space to pursue it. I strongly prefer the
aesthetics of this model vs. the Clem L for some reason. It’s somewhat
hard to explain, because I’m not opposed to the curved L in any way and
even really like the Gus/Susie top tube curves… I think it’s more how the
Roscoe’s straight, nearly parallel tubes kind of resemble a Raleigh Sports
three speed step through.

I was on the fence for a bit between this model and the Clem H once I
caught wind of their imminent release. Without the finances for both, I
opted for the value and certainty of the 65cm Clem complete, which was
released first and in greater numbers, although still limited in the XL
size for the discontinued H type. I’d eventually come to completely miss
the initial announcement of the Roscoe presale until after they (XL) were
all accounted for anyway so it kind of worked out for the best that I went
for the Clem when the opportunity came as there. I always thought I’d
still try to snag one of these Roscoes if they ever became available on the
second hand market but would definitely need to be frame/fork for me to
even make it work and still retain the Clem.

Looks like a really nice build and hope that for whoever ends up grabbing
it, it puts a huge smile on their face every time the get in the saddle!

Yeah, I just laced up my first wheel yesterday using the Jim Langley video

I'll see how things go when I start truing the wheel. Wish me luck!

Re: [RBW] Will's Roadini SS

2022-12-17 Thread Eric Daume
This is funny. I mostly ride a fixed gear road bike, but this thread has me
thinking about a SS FW road bike. I could use a tensioner for that kind of
build, which would open up a lot of interesting frames to think about.

I could finally flip over one of my flip/flop wheels and give it a try, I
guess.

Re: [RBW] Re: Will's Roadini SS

2022-12-17 Thread JohnS

On my Quickbeam there is a fixed 18 cog that I use all the time and on the
other side is a fixed 16 that I never use. So as long as I can get it off
the hub, I'll try one of the SS freewheels that I have. Should be able to
work on it over the Christmas break.

I agree Philip, changing tires, swapping bars, adding/removing
fenders/racks all make a bike seem like new.

On the upside of fixed gear riding, I can do a very good track stand, being
able to push forward or backward just makes it so much easier. I don't even
try on my multi-geared bikes any more.

Thanks,

I don't have nearly the historical knowledge that many here do, and a
lot has already been said. But here are my summarized thoughts between the
two anyway, beyond the obvious difference of location of manufacture. The
Hunqapillar seems to me like a "v2" Bombadil - they increased tire
clearance over the Bombadil from 2.1 to 2.4" on most sizes, they made
little geometry tweaks but just a smidge here and there, and notably they
made the frame more cost-effective by not only changing suppliers but by
 simplifying the design a bit.

To me they are still both "ATB" Rivendells, made to tackle trails
loaded or not, and also be comfortable to ride on pavement as long as
you're not in too much of a rush. When it comes to which is more coveted,
it really comes down to whether the little superfluous (but beautiful)
details on the Bombadil are important to you, and/or which paint job and
geometry specifics suit you better. I think of them like the Appaloosa and
Atlantis - basically two flavors of the same bike.

2022-12-17 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
There’s a post on the Facebook Rivendell buy/sell/trade group that has a
Rosco with the lift-a-tube shown for sale. I can’t seem to post the link
here - will try in a second post. It’s $$$ at 3k, but I know people go
crazy for these for some reason, so heads up and maybe a Merry Christmas
present for someone.

[RBW] ISO: Toyo Atlantis

2022-12-17 Thread Eliot B
I know it’s a long shot and I have saved EBay searches but if anyone has a
Toyo built Atlantis in 54.5 or 56. I’d love to talk to you about buying it
complete or frameset. Thanks !

Re: [RBW] ISO: Missing Link wheel building book

2022-12-17 Thread Garth
FWIW, if anyone wants to geek out on all things wheel building, check out
the Wheel Fanatyk website for both "information" as well as wheelbuilding
hardware that while geared toward the professional, anyone of interest can
acquire. There's a whole lotta info there, so take your time, it has lots
of rabbit holes.
https://wheelfanatyk.com/collections
https://wheelfanatyk.com/pages/library
Under https://wheelfanatyk.com/pages/manuals is a pdf of the 1986
Bicycling Mag Wheelbuilding guide written by Eric Hjertberg,
wheelbuilder/co-founder of Wheelsmith.

That said, I myself like audio/visual ways like the Jim Langley video
mentioned above. He has an inviting and appealing way about him, that's the
best I can describe it. Blueprints and methodology alone don't do much for
me... when someone animates it, brings it to life in understandable and
universal language .. well that's relatable.

After watching him last year, even I decided to play with some wheels I had
built 30 years ago that needed some fine tuning, and to build my own again.
I figured with the silly delivery and labor costs of custom wheels, and the
inherent limited hardware choices all wheelbuilders offer, I may as well
invest in a decent stand, a new dish gauge and anything else I may need. So
I bought a Unior 1689 stand and the calibration gauge for it. It sure is
nice having a stable, consistent platform to work on wheels ! I chose the
Unior because it's perfectly stable as-is without needing to buy a base.

Kim,

"This book required much work and expertise but it's not expensive. If you
are reading a copy that you obtained without paying then please go to
www.wheelpro.uk and make a purchase and obtain the most up to date version"

The 7th edition (2 newer than the pirated version) is 9 British pounds, or
at the current exchange rate, $10.93, which I suspect for most of us on
this list is not a substantial burden. Should anyone find the book useful
I'd suggest that they go ahead and purchase it.
