Re: [RBW] Re: Bombadil and Hunqapillar origins: The definitive thread

2022-12-23 Thread Joe Bernard
You are correct sir. I had my custom built to be kind of light/flexy for
mostly road riding with light loads. I later picked up the Bombadil you now
own and found that it felt pretty much like a shorter wheelbase version of
my custom! I presume it would carry more stuff - especially with that
second toptube - but it's very far from a tank.

2022-12-23 Thread Jason Fuller
I know some people find romance in a bike being described as
stout-as-all-get-out, or sturdy enough to survive an apocalypse; for me,
that is is a turn-off: I want a bike that is as strong and stiff as I need
it to be, but ideally no more than necessary. Especially in the case of
steel, because much of the beauty of steel is how it flexes and springs as
it works with you during a ride. So on paper, the Bombadil is not right
for me at all (I'm 160lbs) but yet I find it rides lighter and more lively
than its tubing spec would ever suggest - certainly, still a pretty solid
bike, but nothing 'tank like' about it. I presume the same is true of the
Hunq. I suppose that's true of all Rivs - they tend to ride lighter and
livelier than their specs on paper would suggest.

[RBW] "WTT" - Rivendell Road 56cm - Bay Area

2022-12-23 Thread Huston

Greetings,

As the title suggests, I am looking to “trade” [details below] a lovely
56cm 1995 Rivendell road. The frame measurements are as follows: seat tube
56cm c-t-t; top tube 57cm c-t-c. For more details on the Road, please see
Riv Reader #2, which Reed has kindly made available here
. Build list is as follows:

   - Wheels - Shimano 600 Tri-Color 32 hole laced to Ritchey Vantage Comp
   Roads
   - Tires - Panaracer Pasela 700 x 28
   - Headset - Shimano 600
   - Stem - Nitto Pearl (10cm)
   - Handlebars - Nitto Noodle 44
   - Brake levers - Dia Compe
   - Seatpost - Shimano 600
   - Front Derailleur - Suntour Superbe Pro
   - Bottom Bracket - Shimano UN55
   - Crankset - Sugino XD2-701D (50-34 x 170mm)
   - Pedals - Shimano 600
   - Rear Derailleur - Shimano Ultegra Tri Color (RD-6401)
   - Cassette - Shimano
   - Shifters - Shimano 600 7 speed

Saddle and Cateye bits are not included. Photos are available here
.

Sorry for the poor quality of the pics. We are in the middle of this bomb
cyclone, and it's dark and -3 outside.

The grey Shimano components look really good on the Riv blue. If I had to
guess, I would say that the wheelset is original to the bike. I think it
had a mix of Suntour Superbe and Shimano 600 when it came to me. For good
measure, the Suntour front derailleur remains. As for condition, there is
definite beausage (i.e, plenty of paint blemishes). Drive side chain stay
and bottom bracket shell are the worst. But, the frame is solid: no dents
or issues to mention.

Letting go of this bike is difficult. The Riv blue, lugs, and headbadge
are beautiful. You might ask, "Why sell?" The answer: the bike does fit
me or my current riding style/needs very well.

Now, here's why the title mentions Bay area trade. I have identified a
specific bike for which I will trade. It is currently for sale in the Bay
area. I have spoken with the seller, and he is knowledgeable and
reputable; however, he wants to deal in person and is unwilling to
facilitate shipping. So, I need some boots on the ground to make this
happen. If you are interested in this quest, please send a PM. I can
identify the bike; you can then buy it with your funds (and negotiating
power) and ship it to me. Once the wheels are in motion, I can get the Riv
boxed and ready to go. I don't want to identify the bike (which is not a
Riv) in question in this post for a number of reasons. Let's just say that
the price is less than $1,500 and that there should be room for negotiation
if you are a good haggler.

Thanks for your interest. I know this is an unusual WTT ad, but I'm
guessing that there's someone who won't mind a little legwork in exchange
for an old school Riv.

Thank you for sharing, Captain. I do not believe I've ever seen that
before and also likely my first glimpse of the original Hunqa drawing for
the headbadge. Looks like that tall Bombadil in the brochure is the same
one captured by Jim at HQ as well.

I'm going to repost my Rosco due to technical issues the first try.

Hi Folks,

I'm reluctantly parting with my latest acquisition, a 60 cm Rosco Platy-
in purple!
I find it to be a more forgiving, compliant, and spritely ride than the Gus
& Suzie, and if it had a greater stack height it would be my perfect all
arounder, but the combination of my too tall pbh (99cm) and needing
handlebars up higher still just doesn't work here.

Having owned/own a slew of Rivs, this would be my candidate for 'the one to
rule them all'. An incredibly versatile, capable, and of course, being a
Riv, fun.

[RBW] Re: Orange Ram touchup paint

2022-12-23 Thread ascpgh
Small blems on an orange Rambouillet may be cosmetically reduced from
attracting attention using nail enamel in a good color match. As others
have said, the pearlescent orange finish was a three layer build to achieve
the result and is a harrowing repair to execute with continuity to the
surrounding original finish.

That complexity of finish is why my Ram and its beausavage (when things get
beyond Grant's "beausage") has not been renewed and the sum quoted to do so
by JB and others was put toward a new frame and fork.
