[RBW] Roaduno planning? Phil hubset for sale

2023-01-07 Thread Bill Lindsay
Short version: I'm selling a used Phil Wood Track hubset:

Rear High-Flange fixed/fixed track hub 120mm, 32h, with two Phil lock
rings: $155 plus shipping
Front High-Flange track hub, 32h, new axle and bearings: $110 plus shipping
Both for $260 shipped

Long version:
You're waiting for the Roaduno? So am I! As I wait, I managed to get a
Quickbeam on a trade that worked out. That Quickbeam came with a Phil Wood
track hubset, and mismatched rims. Each wheel had major issues. The rear
hub was/is sensational but the rear rim was toast. The front rim was
great, but the front hub had a stripped out axle and crunchy bearings. I
built a different wheelset for the Quickbeam and set these wheels aside. I
love the current wheelset and so I parted these out. Rear rim
-->recycled. I bought brand new axle and bearings from Phil and set up the
front to as-new mechanical condition. Selling a $220 hub for $110 when I
just bought $70 of parts for it may not be my best financial move, but here
we are...

[RBW] Re: Sharing Your Winter Ride Fotos 2023

2023-01-07 Thread Eric Marth
Takashi — the picture was taken in the evening, returning from a short
ride.

Nice snow pics, Dave!

Paul is right, we generally don't get a lot of snow. We definitely don't
have snow on the ground all winter. We can get a big storm with a couple of
feet every few years. Back in 1996 a blizzard rolled through and we were
out of school for over two weeks. That sort of thing is rare.

What happens frequently is we get between 3" and 6" and we don't have the
infrastructure or the driving knowledge to carry on and everyone does
stupid stuff and they don't know how to drive and it's a real mess.

Last winter we got a really gross and scary storm. Not a lot of snow but it
was very wet and heavy, unusual for our part of the country. A lot of stuff
broke like streetlights and power lines and transformers, which is not
typical. The snow also stuck to the foliage of evergreen trees in an
unusual way and many, many trees were felled by the snow accumulation and
lots of large branches lost. Just after the storm we could hear large
branches snapping from pine trees at the park nearby, loud explosive
cracks. The city and residents were still working on cleanup into the early
summer.

Looks like Virginia is a very beautiful place, I can almost feel crisp

Wow, blizzard to green in one week?
It gave you a chance to ride your beautiful Platypus, so it was a good

 Please post more photos!

Paul's and Eric's photos make me wonder - doesn't Virginia have much

Yeah, that relisting makes me suspicious about what might have happened the

That said, I still love it. Maybe I should buy it and just lose 10 pounds
or so off my already skinny bod. Nah.

[RBW] Re: Flood Season Riding in CA

2023-01-07 Thread reynoldslugs
The Russian River is flowing pretty high here in Sonoma County. Weather
report is for more rain for the next few weeks. My winter rain bike is a
Bruce Gordon with Sim Works fenders, and it’s getting plenty of use.
 Pictures to follow.

The national news outlets are covering the storms and flooding here, with a
lot of reports from the sites of my favorite rides - along the Russian
River, Guerneville, Monte Rio, Coleman Valley, Bodega Bay, Jenner.

The flip side of all this rain and potential flooding is that we are still
in drought. Another one of my favorite rides is from Healdsburg to Lake
Sonoma, up Rock Pile Road. Lake Sonoma has been shockingly low for the
last few years, and we really, really need the rain. I just hope the
flooding doesn’t do too much damage to folks in the low lying areas.

I’ll ride close to home today, steel bike + fat tires + cantilevers + good
fenders, with screaming hi-viz rain gear thrown in for good measure.

And yes, everyone please stay safe.

Re: [RBW] Re: Are Paul brakes worth the money?

2023-01-07 Thread Brian McDermott
I've had the Racers, Mini-Motos, and the touring cantis. The Racers worked
well, but I prefer a canti or V brake. The Mini-Motos are fantastic and
provide excellent power and modulation, and the added bonus of working with
road levers without a problem.

Now for the touring cantis, I bought a set used on ebay, but when
installing them on my Sam, I noticed I was missing a pivot. So, I installed
one pair on the front, and a pair of Tektro TR720s on the rear while I
waited for a new pivot. I ran this setup for many months, and I've gotta
say, the difference between the Pauls and the Tektros was minimal. Of
course, the Pauls were on the front so that is a factor, but...pound for
pound, I think as far as cantis go, the Pauls aren't really worth it; aside
from looks and maybe slightly improved modulation, being MUSA is the
biggest selling point.
