2023-01-09 Thread greenteadrinkers
I'd suggest checking out the Red Leaf Rambler just a litter few hours
northwest of the Nor'Easter here in Western Mass. Last fall was the second
year of the event, the routes are really great and rather challenging.
Also, there's the D2RD.

[RBW] Re: 22 for 2022

2023-01-09 Thread Drew Saunders
Paul,

May I ask what you're using to attach lights to the side of your basket? I
made a "fake short handlebar" from an old broomstick and a long bolt to get
a light out in front of my fender, but it doesn't work with newer lights,
and I like your "tiny fake handlebar attached to the side of the basket"
better.

Thanks, and great pics, by the way!

"the extra complication (bleeding) over the cable Pauls" has sent me back
to cables and calipers on 2 of my bikes. Especially if I'm in hilly and
mountainous terrain, especially especially when touring with moderate loads
(35lbs) in that terrain, disc-brake pads wear out way faster than ol'
fashioned brake pads. Hydraulic discs are super easy to squeeze and
modulate, and although my thumbs are already arthritic I can still stop
just fine w'cable brakes.

Re: [RBW] Re: Are Paul brakes worth the money?

2023-01-09 Thread Jamie Kaplan
Are Paul’s worth it?? Yes. But, maybe not. Depends. As Pam Murray reminded me, our bikes should be a source of joy and satisfaction. So if spending incrementally more dollars is a stresser, then maybe don’t go there. By contrast, we’ve all seen basic set ups on Riv’s site. We all know that they work splendidly. At the end of the day, our ‘curated’ bicycles are a balancing act between our personal choices and our constraints. We all have constraints. I own one ‘forever’ Clem L. Works for me b/c my range of riding needs is relatively narrow. I spent many pandemic months researching a bike of choice. The Riv Clem L checked all my boxes. I made sure I had the money set aside. I made certain to obtain spousal dispensation. Once I found it I pounced sight unseen. Yikes. I then had nine months from down payment to pick up to research and procure parts and components. I wanted to do it once and do it right. Today, I have zero regrets. Even my wife loves the bike and how it has expanded my universe. I love the look and ride of my Riv. For me it wasn’t my mid-life crisis European convertible, it’s was just…a bike. Enjoy the process and the outcome. Cause if we’re when we’re riding our Rivs life is inherently good. Sent from my iPhoneOn Jan 7, 2023, at 9:06 AM, Brian McDermott wrote:I've had the Racers, Mini-Motos, and the touring cantis. The Racers worked well, but I prefer a canti or V brake. The Mini-Motos are fantastic and provide excellent power and modulation, and the added bonus of working with road levers without a problem. Now for the touring cantis, I bought a set used on ebay, but when installing them on my Sam, I noticed I was missing a pivot. So, I installed one pair on the front, and a pair of Tektro TR720s on the rear while I waited for a new pivot. I ran this setup for many months, and I've gotta say, the difference between the Pauls and the Tektros was minimal. Of course, the Pauls were on the front so that is a factor, but...pound for pound, I think as far as cantis go, the Pauls aren't really worth it; aside from looks and maybe slightly improved modulation, being MUSA is the biggest selling point. On Friday, January 6, 2023 at 11:01:17 PM UTC-5 rus...@gmail.com wrote:In my opinion, Paul brakes are definitely worth it, and they’re MUSA.I installed a pair of Mini Motos on my Surly Cross x Check with Campagnolo Ergo levers, which is the a great go most anywhere setup. Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell-esq fat bike

2023-01-09 Thread Zach Roeder
I'm using a Shimano XTR M9125-1 with a Q of 174mm on my Rohloff Prospector
(first generation). With short axle XTR SPD pedals, it feels like a 168mm q
factor. I've tried several different cranks, and I think this is as narrow
as you can go. And if you are a super strong rider, maybe there's the
possibility of the crank hitting the chainstays?

Clearances are super tight everywhere with 26x4". I'm actually considering
slightly wider q or smaller tires because I occasionally rub my legs on the
tires on descents, and it hurts! I love how it pedals for long rides
though.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell-esq fat bike

2023-01-09 Thread Joe D.
Thanks Zach! The Tumbleweed is definitely appealing, especially with a 29 x
3 dirt tire and 26 x 4 in winter.

I wonder if 26 x 4 with reasonably big rims (64mm or full 80mm) would work
with a modified cassette, like the setup Crust bikes talk about
here: https://www.tumblr.com/crustbikes/159521355676/the-stubby-cassette.
I'd be fine with only 5-7 gears. And I think a Q factor closer to 180-185
would be ok. It sounds like it'd definitely be a no-go at your Q factor of
174.

Thanks!

[RBW] Re: 22 for 2022

2023-01-09 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
Drew, thanks for the complement on the photos.
As to the basket light mount, I've had two of these for so many years, I
cannot recall their origin. They were designed to mount to a frame or fork
tube and I adapted them easily for the basket. They aren't as substantial
as the current mounts made to attach at a frame fitting (like Paul & PDW,
etc.). So, at first I wasn't sure if they would be trustworthy. They have
proved to be fine and I'm sure I did not pay much at the time. Your search
may prove to be more fruitful than mine.
I looked at the strap on the basket side and one says, "CRONOMETTI" the
other, made to fit a different tube size, says, "ISSIMO," so your guess is
as good as my own. It is very likely I got word of this from one of these
forums.
Just out: PDW has a newly designed basket mount called the "Outpost Mount,"
made of metal (steel?) so a little on the heavy side but looks substantial
enough to be able to survive the bike falling over without any damage to
the light mount.
I'm headed out for an overnighter on Wednesday and hope to try it out:

[RBW] Bags like the Grabsack?

2023-01-09 Thread Michael Ullmer
Hi all, wondering if anyone has any recommendations for bags like the Riv
Grabsack from small-ish makers (i.e. not Timbuk2)? I'm looking for
something like the Grabsack in size/function but with a better strap and
open/close function.

Now with winter here, I need more space for gloves, hat, etc. than my
little Swift hipbag can accommodate.

Thanks all!

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell-esq fat bike

2023-01-09 Thread J G
You guys have it right for ball parking limits based on something in the
26x~4" range based on my experience.

As stated before, my custom Clockwork Dirt Fat 1x (SqT White Industries
Road Cranks w/76bcd spider & 1x ring) with narrow Deda stays has a Q of
~180mm and looking at the space needed for tire, space, stays (modern yokes
giving a little more here when used), space and arms, 170mm was what I was
thinking for theoretical minimum with a SS or Rohloff. Sounds like Zach is
confirming 168mm really pushes that limit.

[RBW] FS - Nitto Stems & Bars, Paul Levers, RuthWorks Bag, Sugino Crank, Shimano 8 Speed Cassette, Suntour FD, Sella San Marco Saddle

2023-01-09 Thread Huston

Greetings,

For your consideration are some components and accessories. I believe that
almost all of these items have been on a Riv, and quite a few of them were
purchased directly from Riv. With that disclaimer, here’s the list:

1. Nitto Technomic Deluxe (NTC-DX-190) stem. 10cm in length with 26.0mm
clamp. This is my favorite Nitto stem with a quill length between the
Pearl (150mm) and the Tallux (225mm). Used with light insertion marks.
There is some light corrosion on the bolt heads that was difficult to
capture in the pictures. $50 shipped.

2. Nitto Pearl stem. 10cm in length with 26.0mm clamp. Light insertion
marks but super clean. $60 shipped.

3. Ruthworks Audax saddlebag in waxed canvas. Approximate dimensions are
10" by 6" by 6" with about a 6L volume (excluding side pockets). You can
see the outlines of a few patches that I previously had sewn onto the bag.
Otherwise, like new. $150 plus shipping.

4. Suntour Superbe Pro front derailleur. Clamp-on (26.8mm). Vintage but
very clean. $50 shipped.

5. Shimano CS-M737 cassette. 8 speed with 11-30 range. This is the "I"
version, which I believe coincides with a stiffer spider. Low mileage.
$40 shipped.

6. Sugino XD2-701D double crankset. 170mm arms with 50/34 tooth rings. 50
tooth ring is ramped and pinned. Compatible with Shimano 9/10 speed.
Excellent, almost new condition. $115 shipped.

7. Shimano UN55 bottom bracket. 68 x 107mm. Excellent. Just a few hundred
miles. The bottom bracket that you want that is no longer in production.
$25 shipped.

8. Paul cross levers. Pair (left and right). Silver with the now
discontinued 26.0mm clamp diameter. Open box. Levers have been handled
but are otherwise new. $110 shipped.

9. Selle San Marco Rolls Saddle - Titanium Le Classiche. This is a new,
modern saddle (looks like a 2021 date stamp). Saddle has been installed
but not ridden; so, it remains in "like new" condition. $110 shipped.

10. Nitto Noodle handlebars. 420mm width with 26.0mm stem clamp diameter.
Excellent condition. $40 plus shipping.

Will ship to CONUS only via my pick of USPS or UPS. Pictures are available
here
.

Please send a PM if you are interested. I will update the list as items
sell.

Thanks for your interest.

The only places where there's paint damage are the dropouts and below the

[RBW] Re: Bags like the Grabsack?

2023-01-09 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
Michael, ditto on the Acorn Basket Bag. While I use a Swift Sugarloaf
myself, I have a buddy who has an Acorn basket bag and loves it. (Somewhat
smaller than my Sugarloaf, I think.)
I am a long-time fan of Acorn and their business model - American cottage
industry and pure perfection on their workmanship. I have had a dozen over
the years. Nine in rotation currently, since I move some larger bags to
storage for summer, when I will bring out smaller bags. All but my mountain
bikes typically carry a front and a back bag.
BTW, I think they are currently phasing out their X-Pac material bags in
favor of their original waxed cotton. What's left of the X-Pac bags went on
sale and are priced to sell, including the basket bag. If you want one
better jump on it.
While many good bag makers have surfaced since they began production, these
bags are a bargain, considering the quality. If memory serves me, back then
only Carradice could match - and that company lacked models like front
bags, since I suppose the English are hardheaded about their saddlebags,
ha. (I have owned many of those myself.)

Care to indulge further as to why the Roadini didn't work out for you? I'm

replace my aggressive fat tire road bike with something a little more chill

aggressive fat tire gravel bike.

Have you tried a longer crank, or are you just building yours up for the
first time and assuming you'll want more clearance? (Based perhaps on
experience with other rivendell models.) My single conplaint about my
Susie is that the botgom bracket is too high. Its not at all like my Clem
or my other most-ridden mountain bikes from other companies, that are all
much lower.. I've probably learned to adjust my pedaling technique from
previous experience, and my huge 2.8 tires probably have something to do
with it too but, in case you haven't done so, you should try it with
normal/long* cranks to see if it is really an issue. (*mine are 175)

On topic - it is definitely sad to see these go. Grant orginally said that
it might only be the first batch that was fillet brazed, but didn't suggest
that the models would just "disappear." Seems a shame to throw in the
towel and not keep them going in some form, even if they're just tigged.
That's how the Charlie Gallop - with similar top tube curve - will be
built, right? With the Clem(entine) moving further away from its original
mountain/hill bike concept, and with the Hunquapillar long gone, this just
feels like a slot that needs filled to me.

Re: [RBW] Re: Gus and Susie ride off into the sunset

2023-01-09 Thread Joe Bernard
The original plan was there would be two price points for both models,
fillet and TIG. Then the TIGs didn't happen and the fillets got pricier and
I think they lost interest in the whole thing. My guess is Grant/Riv got
tired of fighting the "those fat tires are hard to use with v-brakes"
argument and moved on, but this is complete speculation on my part. I know
nothing!

That's a Cronometro mount that was originally designed to mount computers
on aerobars.
