Upon removing the chain, I read the markings of KMC. I noticed that the
chain had a lot of slideways play and bend to it. It looked pretty worn.

Interesting, Joe that you discovered that your chain was on backasswords.

Scott – I ordered the Flat 65 yesterday after some consideration. I hope
it’ll arrive by Tuesday or Wednesday of next week at which time I’ll
hurriedly mount them. I think minimal modification will be necessary though

New chain? How many miles on the one you have?...

Hi Richard,

I do not know exactly. I am the third owner within a year from purchasing
it in mid-September of 2022.

I been having chain jumping issues. I changed out the rear cassette to new
one; a SunRace 11-40T recently. That did not solve the problem. I am hoping
that changing out the chain, installing a new Shimano Deore M951 rear
derailleur and new cable will elevate the problem. Maybe tighten the outer
screw nut on the inside of the Suntour Bar-Con ratchet end shifter for the
rear derailleur.

This is where I am.

Richard...
I am right there with you Kim. I suspect Rivendell will keep this model
around indefinitely. It’s very unique in the lineup & is pretty darn
perfect.
Long live the Clem!

I hope that time will prove it being so. Grant has designed some very
awesome bikes in recent years. The Clem is one of them.

Going to my LBS tomorrow to buy a new chain (64.5" long), after finding the
masterlink.

To fully clean and purge all residual nuances for this discussion of the
bestPaul brakes for one's bike: Question: What are the several options for
long-pull road levers? Long ago it was Tektro and Cane Creek long-pull road
levers, and I used both, but that was circa 2012 when I first built my
first edition Fargo. Have any other long pull drop bar levers appeared in
the last decade? Context: I'd really love to use V brakes on my 2020
Matthews, but I would hate to give up my 7410-era DA levers. So I wonder if
anyone makes long-pull drop bar levers more like the DAs and less like the
CC and Tektros -- which I think were the same brake under different logos?
Don't want Travel Agents or similar.

I expect that in 2023 we have the same options, CC and Tektro, only.

[RBW] OT: question about high-capacity & rugged external storage drives

2023-01-13 Thread Patrick Moore
1. Thanks for the list's indulgence.

2. Please reply off list.

I do fine with a 1 tb external hdd, but my daughter wants terrabytes of
storage for her film projects, so a couple of questions. I've done
preliminary reading.

a. Is a ssd always better than a hdd for ruggedness? Daughter tends to
stuff things into backpack and toss backpack around.

b. High capacity: I'm happy to pay 3 or 4X for a ssd over a hdd for say 5
tb. Daughter does film and never erases anything. If you want durability as
well as capacity, is it worth the $$?

c. Can you recommend a product with best all round mix of (in order of
importance) capacity (5 tb+/-), ruggedness and longevity, price, either ssd
or hdd?

Thanks.

PS: Just erased ~3 years of multiple-per-day backups on my 1 tb hdd using
my Mac's "empty trash" feature. It took 3 days, unless the process stopped
while the screen slept.

[RBW] FS: Rambouillet 58cm Orange

2023-01-13 Thread Ben Adrian
Early 2000's Rivendell Rambouillet 58cm frame (Grant from Rivendell swears
this is my size, but I'm a corgi with a long torso and short legs  ),
Orange and Cream finish, lots of small paint dings, some touch-up paint
from a previous owner, small top tube dent. Everything works great and it
still looks stunning, but it was once somebody's daily driver and shows
appropriate wear.

The Rundown:

   - 58cm Rivendell Rambouillet Frame/Fork
   - Mavic Open Pro Rims on Ultegra 6500 Hubs (32h) (12-26 cassette)
   - Ultegra 6500 Deraillures with 3x8 Bar End Shifters
   - Sugino XD Triple Crank 48-38-26
   - Panaracer Pasela 35c folding bead tires with maybe 50-60 miles.
   - TRP RRL Brake Levers
   - Soma Highway One bars (42cm)*BUT I also have some Nitto Noodle
bars in 42cm. take your pick!*
   - Nitto Cold forged 7cm stem (Tallux? It's pretty tall) *BUT I also
have the same model in 10-11cm. take your pick!*
   - I'll also toss in an 8 speed 11-32 cassette and derailleur hanger
extender. I ran that for a while and while shifting was not quite as
   awesome, having a 26 x 32 gear was nice.
   - Oh, there is also a set of beat up SKS fenders that I will include.

$1,600. + actual shipping cost. I'd, of course, prefer a local sale, but I
can ship to a loving home.

Photos: https://www.flickr.com/photos/benadrian/albums/72177720305079680

Why am I selling? I'd want to know as a buyer.
The size is a little big for me. It has never felt quite right. The ride is
great. It glides over the road beautifully. Still ,I never was able to make
myself comfortable. I just want to try other things.

Cheers!
Ben Adrian

Re: [RBW] Re: Nitto quill-clamp front brake housing stop

2023-01-13 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks, Garth and Steve. I've considered that before, principally to avoid
the causes of shudder, but the biplane crown is not drilled, and I expect
(have not peered under the hood) that the requested-beefy under-crown
threaded fender boss will interfere with any bolt run through any hole I
drill there, just as it did on other bikes with front caliper brakes. And
the Paul's are precisely constructed enough to fix the shudder that the
earlier Tektros caused without (almost) 45* toe-in. What I'd really wish is
that Minimotos could fit over 42s and 50 or 55 mm fenders to work with my
DA 7410 brake levers, but alas ...

Right now, for record, I have a -- Shimano? Forget, but I think it's
Shimano -- sturdy steel headset-mount hanger that is plenty stiff but that
has only about a cm of drop. The RH will double that for a less cramped
housing run from the inner end of the bar tape.

[RBW] WTB MUSA Atlantis 59 (650B) or 58 (700C)

2023-01-13 Thread Bob
Happy Friday the 13th.

You have been holding on to your Waterford-made Atlantis, thinking you
might one day sell it. I have been lamenting my failure to buy one for
fifteen years. Shall we make a deal?

I'm looking for a 59 cm 650B Atlantis (as listed in the ca. 2016 RBW
geometry chart). I'd prefer a complete bike, but a frameset or rolling
chassis would work too.

If no one has a 59 they're willing to sell (or has one at all; I don't
think I've ever seen one posted here), then I would also be interested in a
58 (700C) Atlantis.

Answers to some anticipated questions:

   - Yes, the newly-re-available Crust Nor'Easter would function similarly.
I want an Atlantis, though, to redress various grievances (mostly against
   myself).
   - No, I'm not interested in a newer MIT Atlantis. For the intended uses
I prefer a more traditional touring-bike chainstay length and
   downtube-shifter bosses.
   - No, I'd rather have Waterford model than a Toyo. From what I've seen,
the Toyos had neither a third set of bottle-cage bosses under the downtube
nor lowrider bosses on the fork legs, both of which I use.

Thank you.

David – I appreciate that suggestion. I’ll throw around the dimensions of those

pretty dedicated to the idea of fenders on this thing and the recent rain has
left me wanting to ride more with less of a reason not to regardless of the

That's great info, though too bad the 74s won't fit out of the box.

Before giving up on 2.25s and fenders, I'd take some measurements and see if
Flat 65s would work in the frame and fork (and chain in low/low). If so you
should be able to get them setup with the 2.25s G-ones since they don't really
have knobs (assuming the tires actually measure out to 2.25 or less).

I'm thinking that Smooth 62s with 50mm tires would work on my Platy so I'd
guess the Atlantis could do incrementally more.

holding them up to my Atlantis, they don't fit without cutting and  heavily
dimpling the fenders to fit between seat stays, also fork blades, and remove
fender material around the chain stays.  Not for the faint of heart but looks
possible with patience and proper jigs for setting the dimples just right.
There's little question that the fenders will fit over your tires, but on an
Atlantis, it will take some work.  The problem I would worry about is this, by
the time you dimple the fender enough to fit, you may have lost your clearance
around the tire at those points.  If you remove metal at those edges where it
is too tight then the structure of the fender is seriously compromised.  I'd go
with a smooth 62 fender and 50mm tire on Atlantis and save the 74's w 2.25
tires for a bike with more clearance (like a Clem).

[RBW] Re: Craigslist (and others) Bikes For Sale: 3

2023-01-13 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
RivSister Joyce, how can this be? I’m completely shocked. Especially
because both of those models rarely go for sale, and there they are, like
diamonds, glinting amongst the coal. Wow. Good finds!

This may be a tall order, but if anyone is sitting on one of these wider
Berthoud models in either a black or dark brown color and would like to
part with it, I'd be interested!

Re: [RBW] Re: Nitto quill-clamp front brake housing stop

2023-01-13 Thread Garth
You know Patrick, the Tektro 1277A fork mounted cable stops allow for a
unfettered cable and housing run, just like a caliper brake. The silver
ones seem to be unfavored in the US market, but are available from European
retailers and even imported on ebay. Dia Compe and Origin8 make variation
of these also.

Having the hanger right above the canti makes for a very solid feel to
braking. I didn't expect that, I only wanted to eliminate the dependence of
the cable to the stem/headset. I never much liked that as if I ever wanted
to adjust the stem I had to readjust the cable hanger. With the fork
mounted ones you can do anything with the stem and headset without changing
the cable drop to the hanger, just like a caliper brake.
