Re: [RBW] Re: Hillibikers - do you stand and pedal?

2023-03-20 Thread brendonoid
Previous folks have covered most of it here but I'll add my personal
experience:
I had previously used Bosco Bars and never really gelled with them so I put
the Nitto Bullbar with a very short stem on my Susie as I was worried about
swept back bars making trail riding and climbing too awkward. However, with
the high stack and long stays I find myself just spinning up hills seated
anyway.
When I had Bosco bars (not on a hillibike) I used the front area for out of
saddle climbing but it wasn't ideal by any stretch.

Re: [RBW] Re: Hillibikers - do you stand and pedal?

2023-03-20 Thread Jason Fuller
My sense with Rivs is that Grant builds bikes for how he likes to ride, and
on his local terrain. That sounds selfish and limited in a sense, but I
think it's what makes the bikes so great too - they're not trying to find
some balance for all sorts of different scenarios, so they're afforded the
freedom to really live up to their potential.

While I've never ridden with Grant, he doesn't strike me as the
stand-and-mash type :)

Those long stays with a spinny gear are a joy to climb with, even with the
relatively slack STA, but like you say, it kind of goes against our
reflexes coming from things like fixed gear bikes and the like. I rode
Loscos for a bit and they were a lot more ergonomic to hold further forward
when climbing out of saddle vs a Bosco, while still giving the same
cruising position (with more stem height). Good bars but I am long torso'd
so they didn't work for me. Sorry to say I don't have them anymore - but
you should try this Billie on my wall ;)

I've attached a closeup photo of the stem and bars (taken during the

[RBW] Re: cycling attire for cold rain

2023-03-20 Thread Jason Fuller
That's interesting, I might give some a shot this spring. I get the feeling
that much colder than low 40's would be too cold for most Neoprene options
but I don't really know. Usually when it's 45+F I am pretty happy with wool
and a shell that's at least waterproof enough to keep the majority of water
out - not much ends up being truly waterproof in those conditions. I can
certainly believe that the water-going folks are onto something though.

Hi Everyone, at the risk of being presumptuous I went ahead and created
this Doodle scheduling poll to see what (if any) weekend dates in May/June
would work best for a Riv group meetup in Asheville. Just click on the
link and it will guide you to a calendar that will allow you to select the
dates you are (and are not) available for a weekend meetup. After about a
week, I can post the results and we can either take the planning further
from there or else pick different dates and try again. Here is the link

Re: [RBW] WTB - John’s Strap

The John’s straps are just ok in my opinion. Fine for short trips where you don’t really need it to be super secure. I always feel like I can never get them tight enough.2nd on Voile straps. I never have to worry if I have them tight enough… they just hold and grip and perform perfectly. If you really want length > 25”, go for the Voile cargo strap, which has hooks on each end and adjusts with a buckle in the middle. On Mar 20, 2023, at 7:08 PM, Andrew Letton wrote:

[RBW] FS: Workcycles Pastor Fiets Dutch bike 61cm - Unique stateside

2023-03-20 Thread a spen

After many-many years of longing to try out a Dutch bike after reading
Grant's high praise of the same, I finally landed one, knowing it would
likely be too small for me, and sure enough, it's just not a good fit for
these too long and lanky frame and legs. It is more suitable for someone
in the 5-10 to 6-4 range.

The Good:
--It's an utter joy to ride, unlike anything else I've ridden here
stateside. Helped me to appreciate what something like 60% of Dutch
commuters experience daily
--Has the optional front and rear racks, capable to hauling half-a-house
worth o' stuff
--Completely weather proof/bomb proof over built bike. With the mudguards,
internal hub, drum brakes, protected chain it requires only yearly
maintenance.
--The upright seating position on the super comfy saddle is a revelation in
how comfortable a diamond frame bike can be.

The Not as Good:
--Holland is flat and so a heavy, well built bike suits the Dutch just
fine. Hills can be tough and a rider should be open to dismounting and
pushing from time to time. Have thoughts of carrying it up stairs to your
third floor apartment? You might reconsider, this guy is a tank.
--It's slow and has a narrow range suitable for flat commutes and errands.

I travel frequently between DC and Atlanta so delivery may be possible.

Please ping off list me if you'd like more info/pics, etc.

Steve, I agree that July 4 wknd would not be the best time for a

I’d be happy to help with some organizing of the gathering. Seems like
 the
biggest hurdle is getting a date nailed down. Any summer date would
probably work for me, but I’d suggest late May/early June if we wanted
 to
avoid July 4. Not quite as many tourists here then.

Good idea! I found the street address of my nearest post office and changed
my answer to that. It's close enough, and if any bike thieves go there,
they'll be very, very, confused.

[RBW] Re: Riv Riders Interactive Map is Live!

2023-03-20 Thread John Rinker
Good suggestions Keith. The map doesn't really need a specific address to
work, just someplace nearby. Also, your suggestion about models and sizes
has been added to the form.

Answers can be edited on the form should people choose to add this info (or
delete specific street addresses).

Cheers, John

We've had five folks fill out the doodle scheduling poll (thanks Steve,
Jason, Ky, and Chasen) to try to find a late spring date for a potential
Asheville gathering and the May 12, 13, 14 weekend is best for those who
responded. Does that date work with others who didn't respond? Or should I
throw out some summer and/or early fall dates?

I've been living and riding in Asheville for 30 some years now, and
would be happy to offer some route ideas - but first a caveat. The
Asheville metro area has seen phenomenal growth over the past decade
 (from
282,000 to 371,000 residents). We're also seeing about 11 million
 annual
 visitors.

The result of the rapid growth transpo infrastructure has been
overwhelmed. Paved routes around town and the surrounding county that

If you're still reading this - in addition to the decline in road

Well, to play devil's advocate a bit, your address is public information

That said, I plugged in approximate coordinates for mine, and I listed my
