Thanks for weighing in, Luke. Love the Atlantis!

This is indeed a very neat crankset, and I just found a near new 42T Sugino

[RBW] WTB: 16mm caliper brake mounting nut

2023-04-18 Thread Andrew Turner
Hey group!
I installed a front rack on my bike with caliper brakes and holding
everything in place is a Sheldon fender nut, because it's the only thing I
had long enough to bite some threads.

Ideally, it would be a recessed nut though. If anyone has one of those
hanging around that's around 16mm, I'd very much appreciate one!

Thank you,
Andrew

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB Sinewave Cycles Beacon 2 Dynamo Light, or reviews

2023-04-18 Thread Brian Turner
My experience is only with the V.1 Beacon, and I must admit it has been a bit disappointing to me, so I’m hoping some of the shortcomings have been improved in this new version. Like Jeff mentioned, it just kinda blasts a lot of light out, unfocused, so it’s best for off-road riding. Personally, I’d prefer a focused beam for both paved and off-road. I’ve found the USB charging feature to be practically useless for my needs. I could ride all day with a smartphone plugged in, and I’d be lucky if my battery percentage went up more than 3-4%. When I tried to charge my Garmin Edge Explore, it made my device freak out so bad, I thought I’d damaged it. When I contacted the owner of Sinewave about this, he said he was aware that certain Garmin devices didn’t work well with the Beacon’s charger. So, the two devices I bought the light to work with won’t work with it. I’ve heard it’s best to use it to trickle charge a separate battery bank, but those are so powerful these days, I can practically go 3-4 days on a bike trip, charging my devices as needed on a full charged bank. So I basically have a really expensive, gorgeous, very well-constructed dyno light that only really does one thing well, and that’s blast out a lot of light. I really wanted to love it, but I’m way happier with my Edelux II on my other bike.I know it’s a popular light and works great for a lot of people in certain situations. I’m curious to know if the V.2 Beacon is a significant improvement over the issues I had with it, but it would probably take a lot to convince me to try another one.-BOn Apr 18, 2023, at 8:49 PM, Jeffrey Arita wrote:We've got two (his/her) Beacon V.1's.  Purchased 1st quarter 2017.  Both worked okay until one of them has issues with all of the LEDs firing up upon faster speeds.  Worked with the Owner and he stands behind his products.  Around that same time I asked him if he were going to consider making a focused lens option (StVZO).  At that time he (unfortunately) said 'no.'  IMHO, if he were to do so, he could sell a lot of these units to randonneurs and cyclotourists alike. The Version 1 works quite well.  At low speeds only 1 or 2 of the LEDs light up.  As speed increases, the third LED lights up.  The lens is unfocused, so it is pretty decent if you are off-road on dirt roads.  The USB output is integrated into the chassis (obviously power limited via the dynamo).  There is a second way to power up the light - you simply plug in a USB power source - excellent when you get to a campground after dark and you need to light up your camping spot (or if you want to power the light without the dynamo).  Well thought-out.  If only there was a StVZO lens option, I think it would be perfect.Note: the USB power output is power limited by the dynamo (not the device itself).  We have had trouble trying to charge late-model smartphones since they are quite power-hungry.  It is probably better to try and charge a battery bank (pass-thru or not) vs. the smartphone itself (in  our experience).  The dynamo + Beacon does re-charge small-ish GPS devices quite well such as Wahoo BOLTs and ROAMs. Best regards,JeffClaremont, CAOn Tuesday, April 18, 2023 at 3:41:05 PM UTC-7 brizbarn wrote:Anyone have a Sinewave Cycles Beacon 2 Dynamo Light they want to sell?  Or has anyone used it, and care to share their thoughts?  My dynamo light broke and can't be fixed, and I have a Sinewave Reactor dynamo charger that I use to charge my iPhone or other USB things.  I figured I'd combine the two to declutter things a bit with the Beacon Light.

[RBW] Re: WTB Sinewave Cycles Beacon 2 Dynamo Light, or reviews

2023-04-18 Thread Jeffrey Arita
We've got two (his/her) Beacon V.1's. Purchased 1st quarter 2017. Both
worked okay until one of them has issues with all of the LEDs firing up
upon faster speeds. Worked with the Owner and he stands behind his
products. Around that same time I asked him if he were going to consider
making a focused lens option (StVZO). At that time he (unfortunately) said
'no.' IMHO, if he were to do so, he could sell a lot of these units to
randonneurs and cyclotourists alike.

The Version 1 works quite well. At low speeds only 1 or 2 of the LEDs
light up. As speed increases, the third LED lights up. The lens is
unfocused, so it is pretty decent if you are off-road on dirt roads. The
USB output is integrated into the chassis (obviously power limited via the
dynamo). There is a second way to power up the light - you simply plug in
a USB power source - excellent when you get to a campground after dark and
you need to light up your camping spot (or if you want to power the light
without the dynamo). Well thought-out. If only there was a StVZO lens
*option*, I think it would be perfect.

Note: the USB power output is power limited by the dynamo (not the device
itself). We have had trouble trying to charge late-model smartphones since
they are quite power-hungry. It is probably better to try and charge a
battery bank (pass-thru or not) vs. the smartphone itself (in our
experience). The dynamo + Beacon *does *re-charge small-ish GPS devices
quite well such as Wahoo BOLTs and ROAMs.

2023-04-18 Thread Matt Beecher
I have one, but have not had a chance to use it yet. I ordered the gen1
and it kept getting delayed. I changed plans and ran with something else
for a while, but still plan to put mine into service this year. Overall, I
felt a bit ripped off for a while, waiting with continual promises of it
coming sooner than it ever did. Had I listened and not made other plans, I
would have been screwed.

FWIW, there was someone on the paceline selling the first version of the
beacon. That was a few weeks ago though, so it may have sold.

You could try gluing two pieces of chloroplast together with the "grain" of

"plyplast"?
This assumes that you are using free recycled signs.

I don't want to hi-jack this thread, but having been inspired by the "lots
of stuff" comment I decided to empty my saddle bag of its contents and
weigh it. 2.55 lbs. So I emptied it and went for an 8 mile round trip
ride on the Ram to get some merchandize. The bike handled much better -
more lively and a bit easer steering response. Then I loaded it back up
and weighed the merchandize when I got back home. 3.64 lbs. On the return

As folks have said, more free coroplast will be the ideal solution.
However, if you want to make your coroplast last forever, never to go “all
bendy and collapsey”, send it around the front and back (or side to side)
corners, bending it the hard way. To bend “the hard way”, you’ll want to
score the coroplast before bending it. Use a straightedge and something
dull to scribe your bend line perpendicular to the corrugations. You don’t
want to cut the bends, just dent them enough to follow the lines you want.
If you plan it well, you’ll be able to unfold your new insert inside the
bag and it’ll lock into the interior dimensions, giving your bag structure
 forever and ever…
 Happy bagging!

2023-04-18 Thread Joe Bernard
Well I don't START with lots of stuff but I endeavor to be like Pam (Likes
To Bike) and Leah (Bicycle Belle Ding Ding) who do everything on their
bikes, so I go shopping and load it up! It sits on a Nitto rack and the
stuff on the sides of the bag bend the coroplast down, maybe I should just
pull the stiffener and let the rack do the work.

[RBW] Re: Tallux length for Albatross?

2023-04-18 Thread Garth
Stem length depends on your riding position with a given bar in a given
frame. Albatross don't have to setup as an upright position, they work
great as a forward leaning alternative to Albastache or even drop bars
using bar end brake levers which allow for endless hand positions from the
top curve on down, unencumbered by levers. You really have to know your
frame, how much reach it has available. There's many different Atlantis
variations and they can vary a good bit in reach. Myself I would only use
such a bar if the frame has a lot of reach, which for the Atlantis that's
be either the very first 1999 run or the very recent ones.

Most complaints of any swept back bar have to do with too little reach in
the frame itself to begin with and/or stem length.

*SOLD Blue Lug Work Hat, olive (new) — $45*

Bought for $58
.

One size fits all. Tried it on once.

*SOLD **Tektro CR720 Cantilever brakes (full set for two wheels, excellent
cond.) — $25*

I bought these powerful brakes from a list member. I decided not to use
them.

*Brooks B17 classic black saddle (new in package) — $105*
I have come to prefer B67s so the B17 is redundant.

*Nitto-Rivendell Lugged Seat Post 27.2 x 250 (new in package) — $158*
Bought for $184. Not going to use it. Who knows for how much longer we’ll
be able to get the lugged seat posts and stems, with Riv and others warning
about limited Nitto supplies.

*Nitto-Rivendell Lugged Stem 190mm quill, 80mm reach (new in package) —
$200*
Bought for $240. Not going to use it.

*SOLD **Shimano Sora 9-speed trigger shifters, left and right set
(excellent cond.) — $45*

Bought for $120. Took these off a Wilbury and installed Dura-Ace bar ends
instead.

*SOLD **XTR M951 V Brake (one brake, front or rear) (excellent cond.) — $65*

Was going to run this brake up front and a canti in the back, but I prefer
how cantis look.

*XTR M950 Cassette 12-32 tooth 8-speed (new in package, never installed) —
$300*

Fancy, some titanium sprockets, remarkably light. I have streamlined and
standardized all my bikes on 9-speed with a 36 tooth big sprocket, so I
won’t be using this.

*CLAIMED **XT M739 front derailleur, top pull (well used but functions
great) — Free with any purchase, just ask*

*SOLD **Nitto M18 Front Rack with diving board (new) — $100*

I bought two and love them. I don’t need this second one.

*SOLD **Makeshifter Canvas Works Out + Back Handlebar Bag (tan, new) — $195*
Bought for $215-plus. Made by Becky Newman in Portland. One-woman shop.
This color has been sold out for a while. Didn’t quite jibe with the
handlebar and cables. I bought the predecessor matching saddlebag from a
list member and the quality is outstanding. Becky is great and her work is
beautiful!

[RBW] Re: What do I replace coroplast with in Sackville

2023-04-18 Thread Kainalu V. -Brooklyn NY

Drew, when I built up my VO Campeur with Albotross bars
,

the Albo's came so far back that I (a) sawed an inch off each end at the

Re: [RBW] Atlantis touch-up paint

2023-04-18 Thread John Dewey
Y'all, I don't think that's entirely true. RPM has taken a hatchet to that
great little brand but most Hobby Lobby stores still sell a greatly reduced
inventory.

At one time TESTORS was once among the most recognizable logos / brands in
the world. Synonymous with 'glue'. Atlantis was Russian Interior Green, and
years ago Grant had intentions to match all of his frame colors to a
similar TESTORS color so that he could redirect these questions. Good idea,
tho it didn't have great legs.

If you're of a mind to, you can usually mix colors to create a reasonable
match for most any frame. Metallics are a bit more challenging, but
oftentimes close-enough does the trick.

I'm looking to get the Son dynamo hub.

Re: [RBW] Re: Riv Ride in Asheville NC?

2023-04-18 Thread 'Gary L' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi Pam! So glad you’re interested and hope you can make it. We will
certainly have lots of options ride-wise but haven’t nailed anything down
yet. Certainly lots of road and greenway options. Some of the gravel fire
roads are pretty mellow too. And we’ll definitely have time built in pre
and post ride for socializing, and I love your idea of a swap/sale/trade
opportunity. Maybe we could even let folks post what they are thinking
about bringing to make it more interesting.

Re: [RBW] Re: Son Hub advice

2023-04-18 Thread ascpgh
The manner of connecting the disc to a hub matters for disc replacement.
When mounted the caliper only cares about the diameter of the rotor. I was
happy to choose the center mount format. On their website they call
six-bolt "robust" and center lock "Shimano format".

Having to keep up with six threaded fasteners' torque and ensure they are
not seized in the dissimilar metal's threads versus one larger fastener
which only has to hold the disc fixture onto straight splines which handle
the heavy forces. I cannot imagine the recovery from a stripped bolt hole
in a six bolt format SON hub body. Your BB/cassette lockring tool will
operate the fastener. Nice big, larger diameter threading you can see and
keep lubricated/anti-seized.

For my use (as originally presented) this hub, built by Peter W. on a
Velocity Synergy rim, is on my Surly commuter. I can at will remove the
disc and put it on my Rambouillet, used with the Racer rim brakes. To me
that's future proofing, shedding the disc braked bike I use it on now was a
secondary point that spawned its own thread now.

Re: [RBW] Re: Son Hub advice

2023-04-18 Thread Peter Fray
Hello everyone,
Thank you very much for the advice! I'd read it all then and came back
today with the idea that I'll take the disc-hub. Then I read through the
emails again

Anyway, I think my thought on "future-proof" was incomplete. I have never
tried disc brakes over a longer period so don't have any strong opinions
about it - except that I don't know how to fix it if I have to (yet). That
being said, if an opportunity comes up I would like to give it a shot. I
should have also mentioned that this is for a bike (hopefully) meant for
touring - so I'm always thinking of many birds and less stones. Perhaps
"multiple-scenario-proof" would be better.

I'd decided on the disc-hub, considering I'll have my current frame not
worrying about taking this hub to a thru axle frame, with the pros -
- good v-brakes are getting hard to find - shimano still makes deore & xt
but until when? (can't afford the pauls)
- option to switch to disc when I would like to try it
- 26" rims are also not too common - even more for rim-brakes, this gives
the flexibility (disc rims could potentially also last longer considering I
don't have to change the rim only the disc brakes parts)

The concerns in my head were first as Peter mentioned about the rim
flexing, if this more the case with disc rims - this is an unknown unknown
territory for me. Second, wider flange spacing would have been nicer, but I
see a lot of people touring with disc Son hubs and I think these should
hold good enough too.

Thank you for the suggestion for the centerlock brakes! Until last week I'd
no idea there were multiple disc brake mounts - I read this is a Shimano
thing so I'm wondering if it makes more sense to go with mounts that are
more commonly used.

@Laing - I would be interested in the Panasonic hubs but I couldn't find
much info/review on their durability for touring.

back to riding and thinking mode,
Peter
