Ha! I love that set up. I have full friction on my Riv but friction front

[RBW] Re: Bike route mapping & guidance app for iPhone

2023-05-01 Thread Jeffrey Arita
Patrick,

One caveat: if you want the verbal (voice) turn-by-turn feature that
ridewithgps offers (for routes), then you will need to pay for either a
Basic or Premium subscription. The free version does not offer this
specific feature:

https://support.ridewithgps.com/hc/en-us/articles/4419572706971-Turn-by-Turn-Navigation

Ask me how I know ;)

We finally upgraded to the Premium subscription, primarily because that
level enables one to 'archive' routes (we have many, many routes and they
grow as time moves forward). Archiving routes enables one to 'activate'
only those routes one wants to (perhaps) synchronize to their desired gps
standalone device (without having to scroll through dozens and dozens of
irrelevent routes).

Just wanted to offer a different perspective.

Good luck,

Jeff

Re: [RBW] Re: Dull-bright Bullmoose bars

2023-05-01 Thread Edward Garnica
Oh I’m not selling them if anything I’m building a new step through for my
partner and I’ll keep these and swap out the MAP bars I’m currently using.
But, I do want them not dull-bright. Not a biggie, but figured I’d through
this out and see if anyone had suggestions or advice.

Re: [RBW] Re: lock ring too tight

2023-05-01 Thread David Hallerman
I think, Luke, part of my response was colored by years of reading some
fellows -- whether here or other digital bike spaces -- disparage the
use of torque wrenches. But even though I didn't mean tough guy by my
use of "masculine," I failed when I put it in gender terms. I'm sorry.

But o'wise, sure, torque wrenches are another tool. And I can see how
there's virtue in having fewer tools. But since torque wrenches help
insure correct installation of parts, even with experienced hands, I
would think many hobbyists who are often less experienced would benefit
from that kind of accuracy.

Then again, I value accuracy.

Of course that was an opinion Joe. And because you also noted concern

to introduce my direct experience with lockrings, measured torque
values, and good old Phil grease. Heck, for some reason lately I've been

Anyway, I'm not sure why my experience with these parts and tools made

Re: [RBW] Bike route mapping & guidance app for iPhone

2023-05-01 Thread Jacob Byard
Ridewithgps lets you build routes on your pc and navigate them through the iPhone app. It does audible directions as well. Normally I build the route on my computer and then load the ride on my bike computer (Hammerhead Karoo or Wahoo Element). I have just used the iPhone app at times. Works great. Komoot should do the job too but I’m not as familiar with it. Cheers, JacobSent from my iPhoneOn May 1, 2023, at 1:56 PM, Patrick Moore wrote:Thanks to the car-centric development of this our Southwestern city we often have destinations only a few miles away that you can't ride to on direct, paved routes. [RBW] Bike route mapping & guidance app for iPhone

2023-05-01 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks to the car-centric development of this our Southwestern city we
often have destinations only a few miles away that you can't ride to on
direct, paved routes. OTOH, thanks to our extensive dirt trails, there are
often off-road workarounds that, if they add 50% or more to the total
distance are pleasant to ride -- and after all, one rides for pleasure; or
I hope one does.

I have to take a computer in to a shop tomorrow. By 6-lane boulevard and
resulting horrible intersections it's 3.3 miles, but per Google maps there
is apparently a combined residential street-cum-dirt trail route that can
get me there.

The trouble is that it's complicated enough that I have a hard time
following it on my 42" professional screen. Also, I am rather "spatially
dyslexic:" I don't easily comprehend spatial directions, relations, and
distances -- generally I painstakingly work out complicated routes on a
verbal instruction sheet.

I cannot use Google Maps or on a 2" iPhone screen.

But: is there some miracle phone app that will, say, let you pick out such
a route on a big screen and transfer it to a phone where the app will walk
you through the turns and distances?

Otherwise, I'll stick to writing out route marker lists.

Aside: When I drive with my daughter, she gauged routes using Siri to
operate a direction app that would nag you to turn in "100 yards" or what
have you. But (1) I will *not* talk to a ddogamned machine, and (2) the
routes in question involve paths that I expect are not inside Google or
Apple systems.

When you unscrew it, just be careful the removal tool is firmly

I guess my comment might have led you to believe that I have a tough guy
mechanic attitude which just isn’t the case. I have over-torqued lockrings,
but it’s easy to back off and the issue of over-torquing isn’t dire like
with over-torquing a threaded bb (I always use a torque wrench for that).

Be that as it may, most (not all) bike mechanics I’ve met are not tough
guys looking to prove a point. My aim with my comment was to share my
opinion that most hobbyists spend too much time faffing with tools and
buying tools when that often isn’t needed/is overly expensive.

 Hi all,

Asking for thoughts on a silly mistake that I made last night.

I was in the process of replacing a cassette (had not tried this
myself before) and I cranked way too hard on a fairly long wrench and
over-tightened the lock ring. It dug into the cassette and produced
 some
little shards. (I did grease the threads, and don't think it's
cross-threaded, all was fine until the END)

The question: does it make better sense to try to fix this now
(loosen and re-tighten), or should I just save this problem for an
 older,
wiser me in a year or two when I change the cassette again?

 I know I should get a torque wrench, but . . .

 THANKS!

Wow, that's remarkable and a testament to some sharp bike handling skills.

I got taken down by a hawk earlier this year, on my Riv Road. Ended up
taking it to John Sutherland for a straightening, which it did need, but no
tube damage.

Hit a deer in my car last week. I don't know if I braked first or my car's

the deer ran away. It knocked out the headlight washer on the driver side,
though. Like you, I'm feeling like I used up a bunch of luck.

Re: [RBW] Re: lock ring too tight

2023-05-01 Thread David Hallerman
40Nm doesn’t seem crazy high in practice. I regularly use a torque wrench
to reach that cassette lockring value. And yet the ring is typically quite
easy to take off, with greased threads of course.

While most of us have a good feel for the needed tightness of various bike
threads, I often prefer a torque wrench since it gets me closer to exact
than hand feel might. For me, the higher the required Nm value, like a
lockring’s 40Nm, the more difficult it can be to get exact (or close to)
without a torque wrench.

Dave, who sometimes gets the impression that some bike mechanics think
working without a torque wrench is somehow more masculine

 Thanks everyone,

I managed to make time to sort it out (can't stand not to have things
riding shape) and the case is closed for now.

It came off with a bit of a struggle. There were a few bits of
aluminum, which I cleaned off. Everything looks fine, so I re-greased,
re-installed and took it a little easier on the tightening. All seems good
 to ride.

 Thanks all!

I've always erred on the side of not tight enough with lockrings because
 if
they do unscrew in use the only thing that has happened for me is the
 shifting has gone weird.

When you unscrew it, just be careful the removal tool is firmly seated.
If needed and just to get it broken loose, you could use a QR and a couple
of washers to make sure it can't slip and strip the female splines on the
 lockring.
