[RBW] FS: 58cm MUSA Atlantis f/f/hs, 55cm Crust Lightning Bolt f/f/hs, and various parts

2023-06-13 Thread Erik from Saint Paul
Not very active on this forum, but figured this would be the best place to
list first.
Looking to sell my 58cm Waterford built Atlantis. I bought it in 2018 from
Rivendell for $2400. It was originally built for someone else, but the
water bottle bosses on the seat tube were a bit off kilter, so it was sold
for a slight discount. Never had any issues with mounting a bottle cage and
nothing ever got in the way. Frame is in really good shape overall, but
there are a few cosmetic issues like minor scratches, some paint peeling
around fender and rack bosses, and a slight paint bulge where the front
derailleur was mounted. It's been a great bike, but I just don't ride it as
often as other bikes I have, so I think it's best to let it go. Located in
the Minneapolis/St Paul area and will meet up within the metro area if
interested.
Color: British racing green
Wheel size: 700c
Headset: Chris King
Seatpost: 26.8mm, Kalloy Uno (included with sale)
Brake cable hangers: Nitto front and rear (included with sale)

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1oxlevH9kCvQy_amBUuEsh6Vjo8qQ3VIV?usp=share_link

Asking $1800 + actual shipping cost.
Also have a set of Velocity Dyad rims laced to Shimano LX hubs that I'll
throw in for an extra $150 if you're interested.

55cm Crust Lightning Bolt Frameset with Campagnolo Record Headset. Frame is
in very good condition with a minor scratch and scuff here and there. Fits
650b x 42mm tires under fenders just fine.
Asking $750 + actual shipping cost.

Other parts for sale:

Nitto mustache bars $20

Tektro drop bar brake levers (short pull): $15

Velo Orange quill stem 31.8 clamp, 90mm: $20

Velo Orange quill stem 31.8 clamp, 80mm (new): $30

[RBW] Re: Billie Bar Hooks

2023-06-13 Thread Ed Carolipio
Not me but other folks who ride the hooks on the Albatross flip the bar
upside down so the hooks are higher than the grips, cafe racer style. In
this configuration, your wrist rolls over and out rather than inward on
that outer curve portion. The effect should be similar with the Billie.

You can also move your shifters so they're not on top of your brake lever.
That opens up a hand position partially over but still in front of the
brake lever. One option to do that with thumb shifters is to flip the
left-and-right shifters so the shifters are inboard of the brake lever.
(Riv has pictures that show that and other ways to move the shifters around
here .) I did
that recently and it makes friction shifting trivially easy. Of course, you
can also move the shifters away from the handlebar completely which opens
up even more real estate - see the photos from Riv for examples.

Bike Snob flipped his Choco bars and put his shifters inboard.

2023-06-13 Thread Leah Peterson
Hi Caroline,I don’t believe I’ve had the pleasure of “meeting” you on this site, but I am glad to have had the chance via this thread today. Welcome, RivSister. I’m so sorry about your seized stem. Really and truly. I imagine you feel a little sick at heart about the whole thing. But you also wisely acknowledge the enrichment the bike has brought to your life. You have identified the problem and you are getting the bike serviced now, and this will not happen to you again. (You’ll be heavy-handed with the grease after this.) It will be ok! Also, you have done some of us a service because I bet there will be some who will read this post and then check their stems and seat posts.I really enjoyed reading your post and picturing your life with this bike. Would you delight us with a little more of the story? What is the bike you have? How did you choose this bike? Do you have a photo of it? I love to see well-used bikes. They have so much character!Again, I’m SO sorry about your stem, but if Grant knew (I’m assuming it’s one of his bikes) he would be tickled. You did exactly what he hopes - you have used the bike for 15 years and have not made an ornament of it. I was searching this group for a specific query when I stumbled upon this
thread so excuse the revival here but it was very heartening.

Last week I brought my bike in for a stem swap (shoulder problem, need
something shorter) and found out over the weekend that the old stem is
frozen (among other issues). Given that I’ve had the bike almost 15 years,
and haven’t had a proper overhaul in nearly as long, I was in a real funk

This is a bike I paid for in installments, it is the first truly fine bike
I’ve ever owned. And in the ensuing years I’ve ridden it daily in all
manner of weather, left it out overnight after having one too many on too
many occasions, and put it through a litany of errands and adventures. It’s
like the Argo or Washington’s axe: I’ve replaced things here and there,

I have couple of suggestions, more for the participant
 pi-droppers than for John:

 1) Please be cautious and think twice about listing your
actual home address. Especially if you live somewhere like Denver
 or
Oakland, where bike theft is a major industry. Thieves could use
 this info
to stake-out and target your place.

 2) it would be great to list the model(s) and size(s) of bikes
you own. So many times I wish I could have test-ridden something,
 but
didn't know how to find an example nearby. This could really help.

Hey John,

It’s a little hard to tell over the internet but based on your description,
a few thoughts come to mind. Are your cable runs clean with easy bends ? Is
your housing contaminated ? Can you ease off the binding bolt on your
shifter ?

I have always avoided lubing my cables out of fear of attracting dirt.

[RBW] Clean AND Buttery Shifting?

2023-06-13 Thread John Rinker
Both my Hunqapillar and Atlantis shift cleanly and, given the state of the
rider on a given day, precisely. The Hunq has buttery shifting all across
the rear cogs- easy, smooth, and...buttery! The Atlantis, however, is
smooth but a little more resistant to change, and requires a little more
force.

Both bikes have the same lengths of cable housing lined with a silicon
spray and the cables are greased with Slick Honey. The Hunq sports Silver
Shifters 1.0 and the Atlantis, Gran Compe. Both as bar ends. Aren't these
were basically the same shifters?

So, what gives?

Cheers, John

[RBW] Billie Bar Hooks

2023-06-13 Thread BobW
I recently converted my Sam from drops to Billie Bars. I do like the
Billie Bars a lot, especially the multiple hand positions and upright
posture they provide.

I do find myself riding in the "hooks" more often than the swept back
portion of the bar though. I wrapped the hooks with some cork tape, with
Newbaums over that. While this helps with grips and provides some cushion,
wondering if there are any other "Billie Bar Hook" riders out there who
have augmented the hook section of the bar for greater comfort? Thanks!

Hey Max,

I'm in Atlanta, so likely would be tough to get up your way. My saddle
height is 73-74cm, so a bit lower.

I've got a 53cm Atlantis, and have been looking at the 54cm Sam, but if the
Charlie could get me up another size with the swooping top tube it might be
nice.

[RBW] Re: FS: 61.5 Swoopy Proto Gallop in silver, with canti studs

2023-06-13 Thread maxcr
Hi Drew,

Where do you live? If you're nearby (I'm in Somerville, MA), you're more
than welcome to ride mine.

As far as clearances go, the swoopy top tube makes it easy to straddle
larger frames. For context, I'm 5'11" with long legs and Will thought the
61.5 would be ideal for me - the photo above by the water shows the bike
with my 80.5cm saddle height..

I imagine for a PBH of 835, they would put you on a smaller frame than
61.5. If you were to go with the bigger frame you need to figure out a
couple of things:

1) Saddle height: can you push the seat post low enough? If so, are you ok
with the way it looks?
2) Reach: this can be corrected with sweptback bars or shorter stems but
you probably won't be able to run drops on a larger frame.

Not sure if this helps, but feel free to ask any other questions.

Re: [RBW] ISO Better Bar-End Friction Shifting!

2023-06-13 Thread JohnS
This thread is getting kind of long, so excuse me if this has already been
mentioned, but has the derailleur cable and it's housing been replaced
recently? Over time some dirt can build up and cause friction, which can
cause poor shifting, especially for bar end shifters. Also, one time I had
a cable strand come un-wound when I slid the cable into the short section
of cable housing between the frame and the derailleur. That caused a lot of
poor shifting until I replaced the cable. It wasn't obvious since the
unwound cable strand was inside of the housing.

I run 650bx48 Ultradynamicos on Velocity Synergy rims with paul racers on
my Bleriot. While I wouldn't go any bigger on the tires, the 48s fit fine.
If you want to run fenders, 42s would be better.

I've been following this for a while hoping I could commit to joining in.
Knew that week in July was problematic and now know for sure I can't make
it. Ratz!!

I'm in Brevard and ride a Homer with 40 mm Little Big Ben's. 90 % on roads
and paved trails. Could I do those Bent Creek area forest roads on that
bike? If so, I may try and join those of you who ride there on a regular
basis some other time, if ok to join ya.

Sorry I'll miss meeting/riding with all of you and sorry to miss Pam, a
good friend and my Cycling Savvy instructor from Charlotte.

Very true; narrower rims require higher pressures. Still, you can go pretty
low. My 71 mm Rangers are mounted tubeless on 24 mm OW non-tubeless Alex
rims and there's no squirm or "wrinkle" in cornering or on bumps; the tires
feel very "solid" and not mushy. Me + Monocog about 200 lb.

to attend the gathering who might enjoy hearing a bit about the route,
 read
 on.

I’ll start with a teaser; I’ve been riding the forest service roads in
Western North Carolina for a number of years and Bent Creek offers some of
the very best. As a bonus, the course that Joel Osgood laid out for us is
at least 85% shaded or in dappled shade, perfect for a mid summer ride in
the mountains. It includes a few hundred feet of pavement but is otherwise
all hard pack gravel - what fast riders like to call “hero gravel”. I did
note two short downhill runs showing a bit of erosion with a few exposed
baby heads, forcing me to pay attention to my line.

If you’re ambivalent about the whole gravel thing, the course starts
with an easy 6.9 mi loop with a moderate 649 ft of climbing. If that whets
your appetite, the first loop flows into a second one with a slightly more
challenging climb, bringing the total mileage to 14.1 for 1,176’ of
elevation gain. The final, and most formidable leg, makes for a healthy 23
mile ride with 2,133’ of climbing. Never forget the pedaling in the
mountains mantra: what goes up gets to come down!

(These numbers are based on Ride With GPS - my probably less accurate
Garmin watch clocked it at 20.55 miles and 2610’ - a healthy ride anyway
 you cut it.)

The full course took me 3 hours of ride time with another 30 minutes
for resting taking pictures and nibbling snacks. At 71years old I’m no
spring chicken, so factor that in. I rode on 700c x 40mm shallow knobbed
tires at 27psi (Conti Terra Speeds). My trusty climbing gear is 36 x 51
 for
19.6 gear inches and I gave it plenty of use.

Elevation Profile for the full route and a few pics showing the various
road surfaces (and one gratuitous glamour shot - forgive me):

Great write up Steve! You did a fantastic job describing the really nice
riding there and the pictures prove it :). If anyone else gets inspired to
join us on July 7-9 please let me know via PM and I’ll add you to our list.
Right now we are at about 20-ish participants, some coming from as far as
Florida, Georgia, Indiana, and New Jersey. Looking forward to it!

As Gary said, we're planning a swap meet. We'll choose the location for
that based on how many want to participate and how much stuff you want to
bring. Could you let me know if you plan to do the swap meet and a
 ballpark

Yeah, sorry for any confusion! As of this writing, 13 June 2023, they are
out of stock. But inbound! I know a lot of people were interested so
figured I'd share some vague intel that more are on the way.

Sure to sell out quickly, again. Lots of restock email notifications

That brings me to the mild outcry over the rapid sell through of
Uncle Ron’s Orthopedic Back bar. There is a narrative swirling around
 the
internet that we do this sorta thing on purpose —- if we were only that
smart. This is a short story about a small business with medium
popularity.

I generally prototype new products in my barn. In the case of
these handlebars, i used a nitto bosco as a blank and bent them to
 where i
liked it best. I call up Matt from Crust and convince him to make them
 —
where he generally trusts me with baked in reluctance. Adam Sklar
digitally draws them up for me —- and its off to the best handlebar
 factory
in Taiwan who also happen to make Renthal’s motocross bars. So these
handlebars are gonna take a while to make. In normal times, 3-6 months
 is
normal …. as things sit now, you are lucky to have a turn around under
 18
months.

So there you are with a high performance geriatric handlebar design
wondering how many you should order based on what kind of demand there
 will
be in 18 months… will we even be here??? Fuck! Okay, 90 sounds about
 right.
90 it was. 90 gone in an afternoon. More than 90 on order now…. you
guessed it …. 18 months away. Hope you still want them!

I think 44cm noodles is right at the minimum of what I'd consider running a
fanny on. On my 42 noodles, the bag fits with space, but I definitely
notice it's there, and there is some rub on my fingers if I wrap them
around the ramps. Also, the side pockets are very finicky with 42s,
couldn't say how they'd do on 44s but they're almost worthless with 42s.

Re: [RBW] ISO Better Bar-End Friction Shifting!

2023-06-13 Thread iamkeith
If I understand correctly that the problems began iafter february, when you
had the cassette and chain replaced, I wonder if something was done wrong
or poorly, or even just different. For instance:

- Does the chain width (referred to by the number of rear sprockets it is
intended to work with) match the rest of drivetrain? Including the
derailleurs (width of shift cage), chainrings (width of rings and spacing
between them) and cassette (number of cogs plus same width/spacing concerns
as with rings). One of the benefits of friction shifting is that you can
usually get away with mixing and matching a bit. For instance, a 9 speed
chain on rings spaced for an 8 speed era drivetrain, or a 10 speed
cassette. Or a narrower 10 speed chain working on an otherwise all-9 speed
system. Etc., etc. But if you're not super comfortable with friction,
you're going to be better off if everything matches.

- is there a wobble in the cassette when the wheel is spinning? Maybe it
got installed with some dirt behind it, or with the lockring not fully
secured?

Otherwise, I agree with many of the above suggestions as place to start and
things to rule out, and that it doesn't strike me as a "shifter" issue at
all: Hanger alignment; possibility that you're simply worn out the
chainrings or rear derailleur. (The former woul appear as "shart-fin"
tooth profiles, and the latter would be evidenced by any play in the
mechanism if you try to wiggle it.)

Lastly, make sure your drive-side crank arm isn't working loose from the
bottom bracket spindle.
