 RBW List Members,

I had a chance to ride the first day of RAGBRAI late last month. Things
aligned that I had that weekend off and then discovered the first day of
RAGBRAI was that Sunday and that it was the 50th anniversary of the ride.
Found out that late Friday and thought about it. After thinking of doing a
possible century that Saturday and not doing it I decided to jump in and
 do
the first day of RAGBRAI that Sunday and also do a century by turning
around at the second to last stop and going back. By my calculations doing
so would have put me at the century mark. First day was 71 miles to the
 end
 city.

I was on the Rivendell Mountain. Met some list RBW/iBOB members along
the way. Names escape me. There was three of them, I think all from the
Chicago area. One riding a 650B converted Trek stating he had just gotten
an Appaloosa earlier in the week, another on a Sam Hillborne and the other
 on a Bridgestone RB-T or T 1000.

I fell short of my goal. In doubling back I calculated I got to 64
miles. Should have just rode to the end and hitched a ride back. Still
enjoyed doing the ride. If I do it again will definitely be more prepared.

Took it to REI after trying the pick. Guy had to hammer it out w/a small
awl. Then when I tried to install a new cable - the head wouldn't go down
until I had tension on the cable then the old cable housing gave up at a
weak point and bent. Now I'll need new housing in addition to the shifter
and cable. And now twine and shellac. And this is the simplest shifter.
I can't imagine the more complicated ones or internal cable routing, etc.

Do you have one of the covers for the passengers? I’ve seen some with these and
it seems like a really neat option. I’ve been considering a cargo bike but I’m
worried about the size of the bike making it tricky to park. I already have
trouble navigating my Gus through the office elevator when I ride it to work.

You’re not really supposed to mount car seats to those trailers, but I was able
to fabricate a mount that let the base mount the same way it does in the car,
allowing the carrier to clip in the same way as it would in the car. Combined
with the “roll cage” design of the trailer, I felt comfortable using it for
quick rides to the neighborhood park, less than a mile away.

The conventional wisdom I’ve heard is that you need to wait until they can hold
their head up well with their helmet on. That was technically 7 months for us,
but I waited until he was a little bigger and the helmet gift him better.

[RBW] Re: Wheel Builder

2023-09-05 Thread MM Indy
Josh,
Stay local and checkout Owen at Clermont Cyclery.
Owen has built several wheelsets for me that are running strong.
The one he built for my Rosco Platy (WI MI5 Hubs + Berd Spokes + Velocity
Quill Rims) is the one most dear to me.
He is willing to build to my specs and the pricing is competitive.
Best

prefer sending business to a local or at least midwest company if
 possible.

I'm looking for a set of 700c wheels for my Atlantis. I'm thinking
I'll do velocity cliffhangers with a SON up front and a nice rear hub.
 The
rear is not yet totally decided as I like quiet hubs but there are not
 many
options in rim brake, 36-40h hubs these days. I've got an onyx silent
 hub
on my crust and love it but they only go up to 32h and I'd prefer 36
 or 40
as I'm a big dude. Which is why I'm thinking about a white industry
 (loud
as they come) rear hub in 36 or 40h.

Anyway. I'd like to hear about your preferred wheel builders.

Agreed. Miners Ravine, and Secret Ravine in Roseville are pleasant. [RBW] Re: Multispeeding single speeds: a Rivendellianesque if not quite Rivendellian 3 speed road bike.

2023-09-05 Thread Patrick Moore
Oh, btw, I have a sad very-little-ridden S3X hub with 130 mm spacing and
gold shell, with bar end shifter that I might be tempted to sell or trade
for something interesting; contact me if interested. OTOH, I think of using
it with that Libertas whose delayed refurbishing so dismays Bill: either 52
X 15 fixed cog for a 94" downhill gear to make up for the horrible slop,
and 70" and 59" underdrives -- actually, not bad gaps for fixed; or with a
46 t ring and a 17 t fw for a 73" high and a couple of miscellaneous
climbing gears -- 55 and 46"; but these are too close for an ideal climbing
range. But probably better to use my second AM hub.

Anyway, I might be persuaded ...

[RBW] How well does color anodizing stand up on off road bikes? VO Noir 622X63 mm fenders?

2023-09-05 Thread Patrick Moore
I assume that fenders like cranks and racks and so forth are anodized and
not painted; please correct me if I am wrong.

I might install 60s on the Matt:1 in place of the current 80s (swapped from
60 mm to 50 mm tires). Bright silver will look odd on this bike, so I'd
choose black. How durable is anodized color on fenders for a bike that will
see some offroad use -- thickets, the occasional fall, rubbing against
cottonwoods and so on.

I don't expect anodizing to be indelible but I'd not bother if it scratches
very easily.

I've used VO's narrower fenders: decent, perfectly acceptable, not as nice
as Honjos; how well do they stand up to multi-terrain use in the widest
sizes?

BTW: If anyone has a pair of 622 X 60 - 65 in aluminum, dull smooth silver,
"hammered" silver, or black, and cares to sell, I'd like to talk.

Thanks, Patrick

[RBW] Re: Did Charlie Gallop lose its swoopy top tube?

2023-09-05 Thread Johnny Alien
I don't hate the new look but I think the swoop looked better. This to me
is like a cross between a Cheviot and maybe the Rosco Platy. It has less of
a reason to exist than the previous Gallop or the outgoing Roadini. I
prefer the look of a traditional mixte vs this slightly higher bar. I also
am a bit confused about designing it for sweptbacks and sizing up (both
with greater reach) and then pushing it with drop bars/albastache. I don't
like sizing up for a road bike. BUT I might be confused as to what the
target is now. Odd that Blue Lug says its not coming out but obviously
Grant made it sound like it was in his blog.
