I lost the fenders and traded the Chev's Compass Loup Loups (38mm) for some Ultradynamico 48s (Rosé up front and Cava in the back). Re: [RBW] Ride Report: The Willard Bay 200k
Inspirational and well written. Thanks for the write up. You’ve come a long way since Fort Lee! Keep us posted. D in Central VAOn Apr 24, 2024, at 1:01 PM, Brady Smith wrote:I'd been looking forward to this ride for a long time. I turned 40 in the fall, not long after my dad was diagnosed with leukemia. He knew he was sick when he started the first day of RAGBRAI last summer and found the first 40 hot and hilly miles of an 80 mile day unbearably, miserably difficult. He's fine now, at least for now, having made amazingly quick and complication free work of chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant, facilitated by the extraordinary generosity of a college student whom I owe a case of beer and then some when we're allowed to know who he is, and the skill of the oncologists and transplant team at the University of Colorado. Needless to say, this illness provoked a fair amount of reflection and no small amount of urgency when it comes to cycling, especially since cycling has been so central to our relationship, and since the appearance of the leukemia on a week-long cycling event made it abundantly clear just how quickly one can go from able to not-so-able. I've been a randonneur for a while, having gotten into it during my days commuting from Fort Lee, NJ into NYC. Until last year, I'd only ever managed 200ks, largely due to family and work obligations. I've always loved the sport, and wanted to do more, but it was also incredibly easy for things to get in the way, especially given how limited our brevet calendar is where I live now in Utah, and how busy one gets as an educator in the spring. This fall, though, I put my name in the lottery for London-Edinburgh-London 2025, and I got in. I've never been a slow rider, but I've never been particularly fast either. My 300k last year was 15 hours; I managed 400k in 21 hours, and that with a few flats and a sidewall cut and some patching of tubes at a Wendy's while eating a cheeseburger in the hopes of not having to do it again in the mountains in the dark. I could probably manage LEL after a summer of randonneuring, but at 300k a day for five days is imposing no matter what one has done before. I set a goal to get faster--to lose some weight and finally be able to ride with the PBP finishers who always blasted off at the start of our brevets, never to be seen again. I doubled down on weekend nordic skiing this winter and bought a Zwift hub, upon which I mount my Roadini, which is transformed, somewhat irritatinglly, into an S-Works Tarmac in the app. Tired of running alone in the dark and the cold before work, I started riding most mornings, sometimes doing group rides, sometimes racing, sometimes just plugging along next to a pacer bot. It's boring but effective. I could tell on my first mountain bike rides this spring that I was stronger. I was climbing hills in higher gears than I ever had before. I set a new personal best up Emigration Canyon a few weeks ago. But a 200k is not a short weekend ride, and my one opportunity to go long ahead of this event was a mixed bag, though in hindsight that was probably entirely due to having spent a few days prior couch surfing in a friends' apartment in NYC. When we pulled out of the Centerville Walmart and headed north along a mostly flat course to the tiny town of Corinne, Utah and back again, my plan was "Hold on as long as you can, but no longer." It was a beautiful day, with a high of around 70 degrees, and a slight headwind as we moved north, which meant that we would largely have the wind at our backs as we came home. I stayed with the lead group, mostly much more seasoned riders than me, up through the first control, thinking that I'd drop back after we headed out to make sure I didn't blow up later in the ride. When push came to shove, though, I kept on going. The second quarter of the ride was hilly and windy, and I started to feel a bit queasy as I worked through a big section of rollers that led up to lunch. At lunch, I mentally resolved to drop back and save myself the misery that I figured was out ahead, but after eating and getting back on the road, I couldn't bring myself to do it. I spent fifteen miles yo-yoing off the back of the group, watching my heart rate spike, thinking that I was about to lose them for good, until the pizza/soda/bratwurst/energy bar combo I ate in Corinne kicked in, and I realized I was going to stay with the pack through to the end. The last 40 miles or so were pure cycling bliss, a pack of riders on a mix of steel and carbon riding swiftly along the shorelands of the Great Salt Lake. I've always cruised alone around 15 miles an hour, perhaps having the energy to go faster but never really willing to push it; watching the group pass 20 miles an hour as we pushed towards the end was a new experience, to say the least. With a few miles to go, one rider broke off and set out alone. I tried to catch him, hoping that the stretch of rolling hills between mile 121 and 124

[RBW] Surly Pugsley for sale
For sale is My Surly Pugsley, somewhat Rivendell or Jones-esq with the wheel pulled all the way back and the relatively long chainstays of 475mm, the upright riding position, the camping setup, and the non-fancy parts (135mm hubs!) [RBW] Wanted: Jones LWB
Good morning! I know there are lots of Jones Bikes aficionados amongst the Riv crowd, so I figured this post is worth a try. I'm in the market for a Jones Plus LWB (now just called the LWB). And although the Jones Complete LWB bikes are now a very reasonable price new, I thought I'd see if there are any used possibilities out there. I'm open to an earlier version of the Complete bike (they're up to version 3 now). Also open to a Custom Select frame (the one with the truss fork and eccentric bottom bracket) that you've built up, or just the frame/fork itself. Ideally local to western/central Montana, but I know that's unlikely so we'd have to work out shipping. Thanks! Dura Ace DT 9 speed shifters, rear DR, headset, hubs laced to silver Mavic Open rims, 32 front, 36 rear. FD is ? CD, I don't remember exactly. Crank is a silver 48/34 Ritchey Logic.Shimono cartridge BB. ST is a silver Pedal Orange currently carrying a green Brooks B17.Tires are Conti 700-32mm with some useable wear remaining. It shows minimal bearsage! However, I'm tech challenged, and still working on how to take and send photos. Has seen almost no rain, here in AZ. I am thinking around $2000 plus BikeFlight shipping. If I am way off base, please contact me and I'll call you to discuss further. Re: [RBW] Tried and liked: Suntour Cyclone pretzel
Eric,Sorry to hear about your misadventure. Thanks for the photo of the pretzel. Did the photo you originally pulled over to take turn out to be worth it? I rolled to the side of the road and did not see the culvert, hidden with fresh grass clippings. I tumbled over at low speed. I'm fine! When I stood up I noticed my drive-side bar end shifter had rotated 90º. And my derailer hanger and the derailer were bent. I spun the crank while off the bike and it seemed to move okay so I thought I'd give it a go as a single speed. I pedaled for a few strokes, then nudged the shifter. It was at that time the derailer turned upside down and inside out, bending into the spokes and throwing the chain. It was really fun! This is my Hillborne, my most-ridden bike. I'll see if the hanger can be bent but I have a feeling it will require some work from a frame builder. That's a Suntour Cyclone. Fortunately I have five of them (including this one). You might recall the cage tension spring in my previous Cyclone recently failed. This is one of the replacements I picked up. It was in excellent shape but now it's going to the salvage bin. While I was waiting for a ride four people stopped to ask if they could help me. One was a cyclist who said "You need anything?" I replied "I need derailer hanger, a rear mech and a welding torch!"Hope your weekend rides weren't so mechanically eventful. Bars are canvas tape with Bullseye shellac. I have taken excellent care of my Atlantis. I'm gettin' old and got a new hip a few years ago. I can't ride like I used to and I am reluctantly switching to an ebike. As far as blems go, the chain jumped once and nicked the chainstay and bottom bracket. I covered the chainstay with hockey tape and shellacked it. I touched up the nick in the bottom bracket with Testor 2135 (the bottle I have comes with the bike). There is a tiny ding in one of the Honjos. You can see the original build on my Flickr account which is ahurvitz. The seat has mellowed and the bars have been re-wrapped, but the bike looks great. I haven't set a price yet or officially put it up for sale. I'm considering Craigslist and eBay. But I thought I'd post this here first, because I know you all care about RBW and I want it to go to a good home. I'm not desperate to sell and (I think) I know what the bike is worth. Switching to the albatross bars, with cheap, avid levers, and nice DRX brake arms improoves the braking dramatically. It’s really night and day compared to calipers or the short arm v-brakes I was using before. The stopping power both better modulated and much stronger. But the weird, unnecessarily, strong mechanical advantage of a short arm (85mm) V- brakes is gone. Long arm v-brakes are the only way to go. Re: [RBW] Velocity Dually Wheelset - $225
Hi Doug, Another cargo biker! I have a Yuba Mundo Lux but probably would have gotten a Big Dummy had they been in stock when I got the Yuba. The spokes are straight, not double butted. I think they'd be great on a big dummy. I actually just switched wheelsets on my Yuba from the stock (https://groups.google.com/g/rbw-owners-bunch/c/8XKVVAqkKfE) to something similar to the Dually, but thru axle, the WTB scraper, so I could run 2.5 - 3" tires. Biggest question I had was weather the 32 spoke wheels were strong enough for cargo bike use, since stock was 36 hole. Two bike shops near me confirmed that it's not an issue provided the wheel uses quality parts and the spokes stay tensioned. After a winter of heavy use on the new 32 hole scraper wheels I think I agree. To answer some questions I got -- Yes, they fit in the Surly frames that take the whole variety of wheels sizes, from quick release, thru-axle, to boost. Re: [RBW] FS: 650b hands on wheels wheelset and Brooks Flyer
Hey Patrick, Yes, tubeless for goat heads. I’ve done sealant in tubes before, but find better results with actual tubeless rims and tires. I have never had a flat I couldn’t quickly fix on tubeless set up but have been stranded with sealant in tubes. Though this was with OrangeSeal Endurance not regular. I’m also running a WTB Ranger 29x3.0 tubeless on a Surly Rabbithole rim (50mm). That tire is so glued to the rim it could not care less if the sealant dried up in 2020. Lots of fun. If anyone has a set of 650b wheels they’d be interested in trading, let me know. Fixed or 9 speed+. [RBW] FS: 650b hands on wheels wheelset and Brooks Flyer
Hello Riv folks, I recently purchased a Wilbury (build in progress, pics to come), but unfortunately I need tubeless wheels out here in the desert. Sad because this wheelset is really nice and you know it’ll last forever as Rich built it. I digress. These came off a demo bike so wheels have very low miles. The brake surface looks nearly NOS. The front hub is a Shimano dynamo (DH3N71). I’ve used this hub before and it’s great. Typical Shimano quality. The rear is a FH-M570S LX series hub. Rims are Velocity Synergy with rear OC. 32 spoke. Includes Col De Vie tires and tubes if you want them. I’m asking 350 and split actual shipping. 8 speed Sunrace 11-32 cassette included. The Brooks Flyer is also off the demo bike, so very low miles. Basically NOS. I’d like $100 shipped or I’d trade for a B17 or Colt. https://photos.app.goo.gl/BYBmaootvCqSBzVr8 Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks! It's neat to see others going through the bike mechanics learning too. I've found the book "Zinn and the Art of Mountain Bike Maintenance" to be super helpful, especially in combination with the Park Tool videos. I'm sure Zinn's road bike book is good too. [RBW] FS: Tumbleweed Rack, Jones Bar, Schwalbe Tires
Get in touch if you're local to Helena, MT and want to meet and check any of this out (and save some shipping cash). Tumbleweed Rack: For sale is the Tumbleweed Mini Pannier Rack, the 355mm version (that's the height from the lower eyelet to center of platform). The platform is 120mm wide by 300mm long. You can google "bikepacking.com tumbleweed mini pannier rack" and read all about it, and check out the Tumbleweed bike website for more info. I had it on a bike last Spring and Summer, but only ever carried a load on it once, sadly. Ended up doing more family bikepacking and used the cargo bike instead of my mountain bike with this rack. Now I've moved away from the rack setup. It also comes with extra mounting struts. This would clear a 4.75" fat tire. These retail new for $140. I'll sell for $100, shipped. This thing needs to be used! Jones Bar: For sale is a lightly used Jones H-Bar Bend, 710mm wide. Some slight scuffs from brake levers, etc. This have only been on like 5 miles of actual single track, mostly just gravel and forest service roads. They're super comfortable. I have a different bike now and I don't need as much sweep, so I want to pass them along. I only used them last summer and fall. Also included are the Jones Kraton grips and unused, still-in-box Jones H-Bar tape. Bars retail new for $85, grips for $22, and tape for $12. I'll sell the whole bundle for $75, shipped. Schwalbe Tires: Schwalbe Big Ben tires, Performance Line, Racegaurd, 26 x 2.1. They've handled everything from asphalt to mellow gravel/dirt. I rode them last summer and fall for maybe 200 miles. There's a ton of life left. I'm only selling because I'm giving a 2.5 tire a try. $35 for the pair, shipped. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell-esq fat bike
Thanks for those insights Keith! I came across the scapegoat V2 geometry chart (attached). Interesting comparison to the current version (at the bottom of this link: https://crustbikes.com/products/scapegoat). When I reached out to Crust they said the current chainstay measurement of 451mm is with the rocker dropouts all the way in, and you can get an additional 20mm by pushing them out. So size Large could then conceivably get a 471mm chanistay and 1130mm wheelbase. Another question for you Crust Scapegoat owners... Crust released an updated version last Fall (https://crustbikes.com/products/scapegoat). Compared to the Tumbleweed Prospector, the new Scapegoat has 1.5 degree steeper head tube angle, 1 degree slacker seat tube angle, and the wheelbase is 50mm shorter in size L (https://bikeinsights.com/compare?geometries=63613a1388731d001d710fb5,61bf4058e6ec02001cccd3cf,). There's also the rocker/sliding dropouts of Scapegoat vs standard dropoust/EBB of the Prospector. And the Prospector's ability to run 135mm spaced wheels front and back vs Boost spacing of the Scapegoat. The slacker head tube angle of the Prospector makes me think it'd handle singletrack better than the Scapegoat. Any merit to that? Any other ride differences you all imagine between the two? Thanks Zach! The Tumbleweed is definitely appealing, especially with a 29 x 3 dirt tire and 26 x 4 in winter. I wonder if 26 x 4 with reasonably big rims (64mm or full 80mm) would work with a modified cassette, like the setup Crust bikes talk about here: https://www.tumblr.com/crustbikes/159521355676/the-stubby-cassette. I like the 38s a lot. I don't have caliper to measure but didn't have an issue on the rims. You can't go much wider with the tires though and the frame. On the bars, with the mustache I would definitely go short stem. I think so much depends on body type am not sure I could say how it changes the bike. I'll add some new photos once the storm passes. [RBW] Rivendell-esq fat bike
Hello Rivendell aficionados! The short version: I’d like some advice on picking a fat bike (4-5” wide tires) that shares similar ride characteristics with the current crop of Rivendell long chainstay-long wheelbase bikes (e.g. Clem, Atlantis, Platy, Gus/Susie). The long version: I’m in the market for a full-on fat bike, with true 4-5 inch wide tires. I live in Montana and my previous winter riding with studded 3 inch tires just wasn’t enough. We’re a one car family, so in addition to riding on winter trails or snowy forest service roads for fun, I’ll use the bike for groceries and errands as well. And as much as I’d love an Atlantis or Platy for dirt roads, bike camping, and light trail use, the more economical choice would be to get a set of 29 inch wheels for a fat bike and run 2.8 or 3 inch tires in non-snow season for an all year off-road bike. Hence the importance of making a good choice now. How I came to desire a Rivendell-esq fat bike: A friend in another state got a 2019 Clem and raves about the comfy, stable ride with the long chain stays/wheelbase. But the real kicker was when I got a Yuba Mundo Lux cargo bike (https://yubabikes.com/cargobikestore/yuba-mundo-lux/) for hauling my two kids around. The swept back bars get me sitting upright, and the crazy long chainstay (753mm) and wheelbase (1410) make 150lb loads totally manageable. It’s like a Cadillac. Since the Yuba, I’ve vowed that all my bikes will be long and upright. Fortunately upright stems and swept back bars can take care of the upright part for near any bike, so that leaves chainstay/wheelbase length as the big question for a fat bike. For reference, scroll down here (https://bikeinsights.com/compare?geometries=5d1ae74763bde8001707cf36,5e1faf637f17da00170c6e28,) and you can see the chainstay/wheelbase lengths on the Clem and Atlantis, both ~550mm for chainstays and ~1235mm for wheelbase. For fat bikes, consider these two models (https://bikeinsights.com/compare?geometries=5ff009522655ff0017c6e96a,61c0a2add559210021256cf2,). The Wyatt can actually have a longer wheelbase than the Rivendells with its sliding dropouts (1250 max wheelbase). But its chainstay is only 465, still long-ish for mountain bikes but not near what a Riv or cargo bike is. It achieves that with a slack head tube angle that pushes the front tire way out front. Alternatively, the Giant fat bike in the link has a similar max chainstay length as the Wyatt (460mm) but a shorter wheelbase (1170mm), leading to a more centered position on the bike. I’m unable to find any fat bikes with the combination of long chainstay/wheelbase that the Rivendell’s have. Any tips on which bike, and which geometry approach in general, would get me closest to the Rivendell/cargo bike-like comfort and ride quality? Other fat bikes? For simplicities sake, I guess don’t evaluate factors other than geometry, like frame material. For what it’s worth, there are very few chromoly fat bikes. (Sorry for the length! I appreciate anyone getting into such a bike-nerdy discussion) - Joe -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] What frame protection tape do you use with long term success ?
3rd vote for ISC surface protection/helicopter tape. I got the 2" wide roll but 1" would probably catch most everything. I usually put a wrap under the front derailleur clamp, some at the head tube where cables rub, etc. And yeah, it always comes off cleanly. Interesting, Joe. Looks like most All-rounders did not use the “custom” head tube lugs, but at least a few did. Wasn’t the Frank Jones Sr advertised as the only production bike to use those? How often did this happen? How would one tell an all-rounder apart from a custom? [RBW] Re: Roadini heavy?
I agree with Bill's take but I often do. I have the Roadini, Rambouillet and Roadeo. All ride great. The Roadeo is setup as a light road bike and built up differently so hard to compare. The Roadini definitely reminds me of the Romulus in feel, but also built in a similar way. On my Ram I can run 35 mm tires with fenders but haven't tried not he Roadini. I would probably choose my Ram over the Roadini but love the classic lugs and orange. I tried selling the Roadini but didn't put much effort into it, but only because all three is excessive. I also love my BMC Monstercross and run got the disc with 42 mm tires in pink. I wouldn't compare the bikes and I use them for different purposes but can't go wrong with any BMC or Rivendell. The Model 0 BMC looks awesome. If your area is SF then I'll second West Coast Powdercoating. AJ is the man, very helpful and easy to work with. I had a SOMA frame painted there in 2020: $175 with clear coat (but I had already stripped the frame). $200+ is probably right these days. He paints frames for Fitz, Sycip and others - very high quality. You can look up RAL colors online to get close and then double check the sample strips he has in the shop. best On Saturday, January 15, 2022 at 8:35:15 PM UTC-8 Jason Fuller wrote: > I know someone who just got a very nice powdercoat from West Coast > Powdercoating in SF, sounds like $200 - 240 is the going rate which is > impressively cheap for a nice paintjob. > > On Saturday, 15 January 2022 at 18:09:48 UTC-8 Joe Bernard wrote: > >> This is a low probability project but my new-to-me V-O Neutrino mini velo >> (it's awesome, get one!) is going to get stripped down for a new cockpit >> and cables and I'm tempted to keep stripping stuff off until there's just >> frame to put a new color on. Re: [RBW] chainring installation
here's another thread discussing the T.A. drop pin and a couple good pics. I'd guess the spacer is used to lengthen the set-up if there's a larger gap involved, between chainring and crankarm. Having the screw head on the inside is apparently correct but seems undesirable - why didn't they tap the hole so all the working parts could be outboard of the chainring (I guess you'd have to install the drop-pin before installing the chainring that way, so less convenient perhaps). The pics at this link show a 5arm spider but the 5th arm isn't in line with the crank (not hidden). Dave H pointed out the pin is intended for the 5th arm, when hidden I presume. So maybe not needed on this version . . . or do other set-ups still jam to some degree and this could help anyway? https://www.cyclechat.net/threads/ta-chainrings-what%E2%80%99s-this-spacer-for.277396/ On Friday, December 17, 2021 at 11:22:26 AM UTC-8 Joe Bernard wrote: > I just don't understand that solution. [RBW] Re: Opinions re Roadeo colors
Hey Scott, thanks for the clarification. Yeah, I saw it on TPC listed as a Rodeo (I thought it was listed recently but maybe not). I figured it was custom and thought maybe Waterford. I saw the fork braze-on but didn't catch the larger tire capacity. Perhaps more like a Ramb then or even stouter yet. Great paint either way. curious: are you saying you bought it from TPC recently and returned it to them? Or you bought it new from Riv and returned to Riv a while back . . . and that it wound up at TPC later on. [RBW] Re: Yet another round of name that sound
I had a similar creaking/clicking sound recently. I went so far as replacing my pedals after repacking the bearings (my initial assumption of the culprit,) yet the creak remained. I then decided to replace the bottom bracket. I had a spare, after all, but was putting off dealing with it out of laziness, basically. Well, after digging myself out of that gumption trap I pulled the cranks and went to remove the NDS retainer (this is a Shimano UN-xx with the plastic retainer) and, sure enough, it was a tad bit loose. Not so much that I could feel any play, but I was able to tighten it about 3/4 to one turn. I put my spare back in the box, reaffixed the cranks, and nary a creak, crack, or click since. You specifically mention that you haven’t tightened the bb. I’ll bet you a beer that’s the source, and I would certainly recommend snugging it up, regardless. Good luck and let us know what you find. I added some more photos and details of the bike. There are some small scratches that I tried to capture. I would say the bike looks in very good shape but it isn't pristine. Has the type of scratches, dirt you would expect from a very well maintained bike used mostly on roads. The picture of the saddle height is at 72 in one pic, at the request of someone on the list. I forgot to measure standover but I would expect 81-82 cm. I'll drop the asking price to $2000. If I don't get anyone that is interesting in a couple of weeks I'll think about selling a partial build. Bill is right. The bike looks like it was recently built up before I bought it so it is great shape but I could be convinced to part it out. It really just depends on price. I don't want to spend a lot of time selling individual parts. The build is very Rivendell, and in great shape. Bill, I might sell the front rack. I'll email you if I do. I just need to see the other rack options I have for a bike.
