[RBW] WTT: Jones 2.5 SG + stem combo for Bosco + Tallux

2017-12-08 Thread Ash [who works to bike]
Its been a few weeks since I changed my handlebar. Feels like time to try
the next one in my list :)

I have this setup:
- Jones SG 2.5
- VO Threadless Stem Adaptor
- Dimension Threadless Stem 31.8/ 70mm/125 deg

All are new. I have done couple of rides (less than 30 miles)

I'd like to exchange all these for your Bosco/Tallux combo.

[RBW] Re: FS 51 Joe Appaloosa silver

2017-11-29 Thread Ash [who works to bike]
I'm 79 PBH too and 51cm fits just perfect.

I must add that:

If you are considering a drop bar build, you need to be in the PBH range
Bob B mentioned.

For my height (and torso/arm length importantly) , even with a stem with
very short extension, only fully swept back handlebars are comfortable (for
the way this bike is meant to be ridden, which is fully upright)

This picture made my day! I love Bromptons. Their design is so

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell Riders use for thumb shifters?

2017-08-29 Thread Ash [who works to bike]
Another vote for Microshift.

I have them mounted on Albatross on the inside so that (a) they won't
obstruct when I want to move hands to the curves (b) I get the sweet
ratcheting type shifting for the rear DR- which is 98% of the shirting on
my setup. I push with the thumb for slower gears and index finger for
coming back to faster gears.

As with many other things, I was interested in experimenting with different
types. So I also got XT trigger shifter. After using Microshift I don't
feel like even trying those. They feel too bulky and clunky. I also like
not having to listen to the clicking noise.

I think they will work fine on flat bars. I do feel that shifting method
is not as ergonomic as trigger shifters. If I didn't mind the bulk/real
estate needs and the clicking sound, I would have gone with the trigger
shifter.

Re: [RBW] Re: New Clem L

2017-08-25 Thread Ash [who works to bike]
Thanks Joe!

You will get a flood of emails when I start this project :)

For you it is headwinds and hills. For me it is 3 dozen or so stop signs
and traffic lights on the way to work (23 miles). I'm thinking with a
motor assist (a) my knees would feel better as I don't need to crank 0 to
12mph 30 times each way (b) I can shave 10-15 mins in each direction (c)
I'll be riding safer, as it won't feel like too much effort to make a full
stop and then start at stop signs and other risky spots. With full manual
peddling, once I'm a bit tired, not only I feel lazy to make a full, but
sometimes I jump red lights when there is no traffic at the intersection.
I'd rather make a full stop than invite dirty stares or encourage other
less responsible riders to start jumping lights

2017-08-24 Thread Ash [who works to bike]
Joe, this's probably one of the best e-bikes out there! I'm saying this
because I've tried a bunch of them and they are all terrible as a bicycle.
I'm spoilt by the ride quality of my Joe, which the main reason I don't
have an e-bike.

Your add-on kit does not look all that clunky. I'd have to explore this
option. Could you share some details about this unit?

Hey Paul,

Since you are only an hour away from Riv HQ, it is definitely worth driving
up and test-riding.

While you are there, be sure to ride an Appaloosa as well :) When I
visited Riv the first time, I rode it just out of curiosity and I ended up
going with it instead of the bike I was there to learn about (I liked it
so much I pre-ordered a 2017 frame and waited for 4 months).

Btw, if your size is 51cm and interested in trying out Appaloosa, I'm not
too far from you. PM me and come by sometime during the weekend.

[RBW] Re: why so many joe's up for sale?

2017-08-07 Thread Ash [who works to bike]
I didn't think that many Joe's were up for sale. At least one less now
because I've decided to not sell mine.

The way this bike treats me on the kinds of roads and trails I ride on, I
felt that I'm going to regret not having it even if frequency of me going
out for rides were to be once a month or less (other than neighborhood
grocery trips).

Besides, I didn't want to take it for granted that a bike like this (long
wheelbase, number of eyelets/braze-on, 650b wheel, rim brake) of good
quality would be available 3-4 years down the road when I'm going to need
it.

Quite relieved that now the Appaloosa will be there in the stable anytime
I'm up for a ride!!

[RBW] Re: why so many joe's up for sale?

2017-08-03 Thread Ash [who works to bike]
I have one up for sale. It is a solid, beautiful, fun bike. Can be
configured in many, many ways. My reason for selling is not getting enough
chances to ride it. Looking forward to owning one again (or whatever
version Riv might have by then) after couple of years when situation
changes (detailed version of the story is in my 'for sale' thread)

[RBW] Re: WTB: Used 700c and 26 fat (non-knobby) tires and long reach caliper/centerpull brakes

2017-07-27 Thread Ash [who works to bike]
Of course beyond certain thickness fat tires would become an unpleasant
'drag'. My experience is limited to 700x28, 700x32, 650x42 and 650x47.
In my style of riding and speeds (~12 MPH average), there is some
increased effort with 47mm, but it is not that much. Ride becomes more
pleasant, which more than makes up for the reduced speed (ie, I keep
peddling effort at the same level).

[RBW] Re: WTB: Used 700c and 26 fat (non-knobby) tires and long reach caliper/centerpull brakes

2017-07-25 Thread Ash [who works to bike]
Austin,

No worries. Given how much folks in this group ride, I'm sure there enough
used tires to go around :)

Appaloosa is my first experience with fat tires (if would consider 47 and
50 as fat!). I'd have a hard time going back. Not just for comfort, but
also safety. There were two incidents recently that would have ended up in
a bad crash if not for the tires. One of them where a local trail goes
under a freeway. You go several yards downhill, cross the bride from under
and go up again. In order to make going up easier, I maintain the speed
while I'm under the bridge. On a sunny day, the contrast is too high for
my eyes to notice details on the trail under the bridge. This time there
was a thick layer of dried mud (2-3 days after the creek has flooded). My
Appaloosa with 47mm tire somehow cleared the dirt patch (it was scary
though, I had no control of the bike). If it was my road bike, I would
have likely ended up in the creek.

Now I advice all my friends to go fat. (I also have a tendency to ask them
to eat less carbs, so they become less fat themselves)

I have a set of 650b wheels and a few different tires for them. Figured I

Want to experiment with fatter tires on my friend's hybrid and mountain
bikes. I want to see what's the fattest they can handle. Figured I can
buy and try some tires you are about to throw away, instead of relying on
theoretical measurements.

The hybrid has calipers. So we'd be interested in a long reach caliper as
well.

[RBW] Re: FS: 2017 Appaloosa 51cm green

2017-07-21 Thread Ash [who works to bike]
Joe is a very nice bike. My decision to part with it mostly has to do with
my riding 'opportunities'. Between family, work and couple of other things
I've been involved in, I only get to ride around the town. My MTB got
stolen recently. After that I'm afraid to take Joe if the trip requires
locking it (like going out for dinner/lunch). I end up riding an old road
bike in those situation. The thing is worth $100, so I don't tend to think
of the bike the whole time I'm at a dinner. Also, the grocery shops I
frequent are too cramped to take the bike inside. I just do not feel
comfortable locking the bike for even 15 minutes. Just too many thefts and
vandalisms around.

The 'need' I have now is an MTB for occasional rides on weekends. So Hunq
is likely the next project.

I'm hoping to have a bike like Joe again in couple of years when I will
have more chances for full day/multi day rides (kids need grow up a little
bit).

My wife keeps saying the bike looks 'too big' for me. But that's not the
reason I'm selling it :)

Also, you have choice between ChocoNORM and Albatross.

I started this mini project on Sunday, but quickly realized that it is not
an option since I have canti brakes.

That Topeak pump looks nice, btw.

Re: [RBW] Re: Request for a safety review

2017-07-19 Thread Ash [who works to bike]
Okay, I think the right move for me would be to zip-tie the pump to my
tool/jacket/glove bag :)

It's been a thousand or so miles since I started biking regularly. All
kinds of surfaces, different types of tire, but not single flat so far. If
this luck were to continue, the zip-tie would never need to be cut!
Small downside of this luck is that I don't think the pump until I've been
riding for half hour.

[RBW] Re: Anybody recognize this handlebar?

2017-07-18 Thread Ash [who works to bike]
I made a poor man's version of loop bar for my recent 6-hour trip by adding
some old bar end grips to Alba. I think I used the loop area for about 20%
of the times. Ideally for a long frame like Appa with some load, the loop
needs to be wider.

I do think overall it looks ugly, but an option upright bar users can
consider for long trips. esp for those who feel the reach is not long
enough with Chocos.

[RBW] Re: How hot is too hot?

2017-07-17 Thread Ash [who works to bike]

This summer I did 3 longish rides so far on my Appaloosa- Mt Diablo, Mt.
Hamilton and yesterday from South Bay area over Santa Cruz mountains to
coast - 55 miles. As luck would have it, any day I had any spare time was
90 degrees plus. It was quite uncomfortable and difficult, given my lack
of practice and endurance. However, I didn't face any trouble during the
ride or the day after. I do two things (1) bring extra water and a bottle
or two of sports drink (2) Take many breaks.

Some portions of these rides (while climbing, where my speed is like 4
miles per hour) I took off the helmet and wore a hiking hat, which helped
me stay cooler. My thoughts same as EasyRider: 100 deg might be my cutoff
point.

Thanks for the help everyone!

Orc, Joe and Deacon, understood the safety consideration here.

Garth, you win the prize again! Who woulda thought it goes underneath the
bottle cage :)

That's where I ended up mounting it for yesterday's trip.

However, like others suggested, it looks like a clutter. Perhaps it should
go inside the tool bag. Combination of not having a good bag and my
tendency to always overpack, I can't find space for the pump in there.
Having it mounted on the frame is sort of peace of mind (no risk of
somehow leaving it behind)

Tim, did you acquire those frame mount clamps separately or those came
with your pump. My crappy pump came with only cage boss mounts.

[RBW] Re: Anybody recognize this handlebar?

2017-07-14 Thread Ash [who works to bike]
Sadly I won't have an opportunity to spend another $50 on handlebars because
Metropolis because it is 31.8mm clamp diameter. (I don't know if a dirt drop
like quill stem with 31.8 clamp)

Make it $170, because I would have tried Jones H loop too if it was 25.4

[RBW] Re: Choco norm vs Albas

2017-07-14 Thread Ash [who works to bike]
As others have mentioned, what's most comfortable would depend on the bike,
your PBH to torso/arm length, type of riding, age, etc.

On my App I initially went with Choco-NORM. You hunch about the corners is
absolutely correct. Wrist position is super ergonomic there.

After a month or so I increasingly became annoyed with how the bike looked.
For Choco-NORMs I had to raise the stem all the way up. It looked comical
especially given that these 1" quill stems are so 'petite'. I do wish this
bike had much longer head tube (which would make the top tube more sloping,
which in turn would make the bike looks even cooler, IMO).

Recently I acquired an Albatross to try out. The bike looks much better!
After about 10 days of riding I've decided to stay with it. I do have
Map Ahearne, Surly Open Bar, etc in my list to try, but I'm not going back
to Choco.

With Albatross, the forward position is a bit more aggressive. I find that
useful as well. While hand position at the corners is not optimal in terms
of ergonomics, I find the riding position at grips slightly more
comfortable (because Albatross bar ends are slightly more open/angled)

That reminds me, I need to make an FS post for the Choco bar.
