[RBW] FS: Mark's rack (Nitto M-1)

2021-03-03 Thread Eric G@rs
I have a Mark's rack in good condition that I am looking to sell for 70$.
The struts are cut, but new ones are available from the Rivendell website.
I am planning to go on a stem sizing odyssey soon so willing to trade a
~7cm tallux or technomic (26.0 clamp) + cash as well. Local preferred for
swap, but willing to ship as well.

That is terrible. Sorry to hear it. Did you happen to get the serial number
to match in case it is found? Also, you could try posting on Bike Index SF
  or other services like
Craigslist. Hopefully it will turn up.

Re: [RBW] Re: FS: Bikes on eBay, CraigsLIst, and Other Sites

2021-01-25 Thread Eric G@rs
Depends on how you like your bike to fit and whether you think GP's sizing
method works for you, I suppose. According to the Riv sizing method, 61cm
may be more appropriate for your PBH. My PBH is 85.5 and while the
standover is fine, the reach is a little too far for me.

me an offer if interested.

https://sfbay.craigslist.org/pen/bik/d/menlo-park-rivendell-homer-hilsen-toyo/7253051293.html

For sale is my 57 Rivendell A. Homer Hilsen handmade by Toyo in Japan in
~2008. I recently had it powder coated low-gloss black for durability after
the decals on the original paint job peeled. Different paint job, same
great steel frame. I have included a before picture. I then re-built the
bike with the following parts:

Velocity Dyad rims (700c) laced to Deore LX hubs
Panaracer GravelKing 38 slicks
Shimano Deore XT M771 SGS derailleur
New Albion double crank set with guard
Shimano UN-55 bottom bracket
Shimano Dura-Ace bar end shifters (index or friction) mounted on IRD stem
mount
Tektro R559 brakes
FSA 1” threaded headset
Shimano Tiagra brake levers
Nitto DirtDrop stem with 8mm extension

Currently there is no front derailleur installed as I prefer a de facto 1x
with option for a bail out gear if necessary, but I would be happy to
install or provide a front derailleur if desired. Feel free to reach out

I went to test ride that 58cm quickbeam today. It is in great shape, but
the IGH needs some adjustment. I don't have enough experience with them to
know exactly what that entails, but I'm sure it's probably easily achieved.
1500$ seems a little too steep to me so I decided against it.

Patrick (Moore, not Deacon),

I agree with your assessment that “if there is anything unscientific, it's
blanket, unanalyzed statements about what is and what isn't science.” I
assume that you are referring to what I said about homeopathy given that
you make specific mention of it in your post. As I mentioned, the
fundamental idea of homeopathy is that a substance becomes stronger as it
becomes more dilute — often to a degree in which not even a single molecule
of that substance exists in the final preparation of the “medicine”. That
idea, to me, is implausible given what I think that I know about the
natural world. Lots of ideas that seem implausible turn out to be true, so
it is reasonable to require evidence to support my assertion that
homeopathy works for nothing other than placebo. I have no intention of
writing a treatise on the science of homeopathy to convince you, as many
others have already done so. There have been numerous clinical trials and
meta-analyses that examine the clinical effect of homeopathy which conclude
that there is no evidence that homeopathy is effective. I will refer you to
the report published by the National Health and Medical Research Council of
Australia to peruse at your leisure (linked below). I hope that nothing
that I said was in any way offensive. My re-reading of my post does not
sound like it to me, but I am open to the idea that I am not the best judge
of what is or is not offensive to others. In the absence of any rigorous
positive data on the efficacy of homeopathy, though, I was compelled to
offer a dissenting position on the subject on a public forum. You are
correct that I should have included at least one reference in my initial

Homeopathy is completely anti-science. It doesn’t really take much beyond
rational thought to debunk the idea that diluting a drug makes it stronger, but
there are loads of studies that do just that. Many alternative medicine

[RBW] Mark’s rack + Wald 137

2020-03-15 Thread Eric G@rs
I’m looking to outfit my Homer with a front basket rather than rear and
considering Mark’s rack as it is seems small and light and ideally won’t effect
handling while unloaded. 95% of use when loaded would be carrying my messenger
bag with laptop for work or a single bag of groceries so not too heavy. I’ve
read through the archives a bit in this, but opinions change with experience so
I’m curious to hear from people that have used this combination whether they
like it or would recommend another option.

[RBW] Re: Group Riding / New Covid-19 World

2020-03-14 Thread Eric G@rs
The reality is that coronavirus is either spreading in your community
already or will be very soon. The advice from lambbo that you "should be
fine if none of you have had contact with sick people or travelers to
effected areas" is not really compatible with the current reality.
Asymptomatic people spread the virus and you would never know if you've
been exposed. If you're within a meter of other riders (which you would
likely be on a group ride a some point) then you could be exposed. Doing
anything in public "with abandon" during these times seems foolish, at
best. There's no harm in taking this seriously and being overly cautious.
Not trying to be preachy, but you're soliciting advice and I'm giving it to
you.

2020-03-06 Thread Eric G@rs
I switched to a stem shifter mount a few months ago and love it. The main
reason I changed was the bar ends getting whacked on the Caltrain, and I can’t
see ever going back. Only downside is having to move the mount if I adjust the
stem height. I see that your cable outlet (not sure that’s the term) is angled
slightly forward rather than straight down. Any reason why I shouldn’t have it
straight down?

I didn't realize that it was the only production frame with lugs and
standard tubing in the Riv lineup. It is indeed quite light. It's a shame
that it isn't my size and is too big for my girlfriend. Fortunately, I
scored the last 47cm Roadini frame from Riv last weekend for her. I am
surprised as well that nobody has snapped up this FJS, particularly in
light of the coronavirus outbreak. One gear is probably best for the

Bill, your glowing endorsement of the Sam Hillborne influenced my decision to
buy one. Sure, now I have a 57cm Homer waiting time be built up from parts off
the Sam (which I may or may not eventually sell), but that’s more a reflection
of my indecision than an indictment of the venerable Samuel Hillborne. Add mine
to your growing list of recommendations turned bike sales for Riv. Just bought
a Roadini today from Rivendell to replace the too-big Frank Jones for my
girlfriend. You seemed to have good things to say about the Roadini as well so
there’s another!

So, I just bought this frame from another list member that you may have
seen recently (Thanks, Ray!). I was hopeful that it would be the right size
for my girlfriend, but unfortunately doesn't seem to be ideal. As such, I
am looking to flip it to someone else to enjoy. It is a beautiful frame,
and as mentioned in Ray's post, it has never been built up. I mounted
wheels, saddle, stem, and bars briefly. It is otherwise essentially brand
new. Also comes with Tektro 559 brakes. Happy to ship it if interested.
1400$.

[RBW] Re: Rough drive train issue

2019-09-30 Thread Eric G
This weekend I decided to replace my bottom bracket to try to fix the
problem since it is a relatively cheap part (Shimano UN-55). I haven't ever
done it before so I figured it would be a fun exercise. The original size
turned out to be a 110mm while the replacement was 113mm. The threads in
the bottom bracket shell were a little gunked up so I cleaned it out and
replaced the BB, tightening with a torque wrench to the specified torque on
the BB and crank bolt. The grinding sensation in the pedals went away
entirely. Was it the bottom bracket itself, gunk in the threads, or chain
line? I don't know and I'm not sure that it matters, but I figured that I
would update the thread for posterity's sake.

2019-09-15 Thread Eric G
I agree — I started by taking it to LBS and did not get an answer. Then I took
it apart piece by piece and put it back together which also didn’t give me a
definite answer. Then I took it to RivHQ and Will suggested it just needing
time to break in which seems entirely plausible. Figured I would post here to
garner the collective wisdom of folks with similar bikes that may have
experienced a similar issue which has so far been reassuring.

[RBW] WTB: Riv parts for a Sam Hillborne build

Thanks to the helpful advice of this forum, I finally decided to buy a new
55cm Sam Hillborne frameset from the fine folks at Analog Cycles which I am
hoping will fit me well for many years to come. I would like to build it up
myself from used parts if possible. I am not looking for any handouts or
deals, just fair prices on quality used components in the event that anyone
on this forum is looking to let anything go. More specifically, I would
like to purchase a Sugino or Silver crankset that I can attach a chain
guard, derailleurs (front and back), cassette, brake levers, cantilever
brakes, and wheels (700c, don't need dynamo hub). I am located in the Bay

shipping as well.

Thank you!

shipped early next week. If you can paypal the $125 to
he...@flatlandkitchen.com I'll let you know what the shipping will be.

Best,
Eric Nolan

I need to sell some things, I was hoping I wouldn't need to. There are
 photos here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ericgnolan/sets/72157632162511851/
I have better photos of the Saddlesack and will get more of the Volpe. Below
is the list, which includes some things not pictured.

 1998 Bianchi Volpe Frame/Fork (58cm c-t)- $125+ shipping
Sackville Saddlesack Large - $165 shipped
 Grip King pedals- $40 shipped
 Raleigh Pro Fork- $100 shipped
Shimano RSX triple crank w/ rings (original to the Volpe, used, but not worn
 out)- $45 shipped
Sugino AT Triple arms- $ 30 shipped

If there is interest in an item, but you think the price is outta line, let
me know, I'll work on it.

If anyone is interested in the 1984 Trek 850 frame/fork combo shown in
several photos and elsewhere in my stream let me know, I may be willing to
sell it for a reasonable price. It's not show quality and has had some
modifications, but is a great bike and I'm leaning towards picking up a Yuba
Mundo frameset to replace the Trek's child-toting duty.

Thanks for your consideration, contact me on or offlist w/ any questions.

 Best,
 Eric
