[RBW] FS: Refurbished Phil wheel

2012-02-15 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
I posted this yesterday from an alternate online persona, but I guess it got
hung up in the spam filter.

Anyway, my buddy Weasel recently rode from Minneapolis to New Orleans. Along
the way, he had some problems with his Phil Wood cassette hub. Long story
short, Phil said to send it in for repair (no charge, of course). It came back
yesterday, and not only did Phil replace the culprit parts, it looks like they
went above and beyond and replaced almost everything, including the hub shell,
drive ring, pawls, several bearings, and possibly the freehub. In other words,
it almost like a new hub.

Along the way, however, Weasel decided he's going to replace the hub with the
disc-compatible version for a forthcoming Surly disc-LHT. The wheel with the
thoroughly refurbished Phil hub is now for sale, including:

Phil cassette touring hub, 36h, 135 mm, silver
Salsa Gordo 26" rim (black with machined sudewalls)
Wheelsmith 14g spokes.

Asking $350, which includes shipping in conus or $325 locally.

[RBW] Re: 650b and the MTB crowd.

2012-02-16 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
In the oddball little Rivendell niche, a shop could conceivably stock most
of the parts of interest, most of the time. In the broader world of bikes,
however, it's impossible. There's just too much, and since few shops can
isolate themselves in a niche and survive, we have to be ready for anybody
who walks through the door, from the guy who rides dumpstered X-mart BSOs
to the bleeding edge roadie to the retrogrouch looking for a wide selection
of toe clips and straps to the antiquarian who wants us to find chainrings
for his old Stronglight crank. Here, when we're busy, "we can order it for
you" means "it'll be here tomorrow". Still, I get a chuckle when customers
tell me, "that's ok, I'll try some other shops" when I'm 99% certain that
no local shop would intentionally stock such a low-demand item. Good luck,
I say! Anyway, "we can order it for you" is not the kiss of death. They'll
likely get it faster that you would from Harris or whatever, and if it's a
good shop they'll keep you from making a mistake.

[RBW] Re: Best sellers-worst sellers

2012-02-17 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
I have a really nice older series (m953) XTR low-normal derailleur. At the Twin
Cities bike swap last weekend, probably 100 bike geek types fondled it and
wrinkled up their noses because it was "reverse action". I like low-normal
derailleurs, but most bike geek types are too jaded to even consider the
concept. As Grant said, many of us are in a "bubble". That bubble, for the most
part, is invisible in the broader bike business. And, frankly, the broader bike
business is invisible to many of us!

[RBW] Re: Cork Grips - Shellac or No?

2012-02-17 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
I suggest riding them raw for awhile, until they start to look grubby. Then
it's time to shellac (I prefer amber color). The grubbiness plus shellac
gives a nice beausage effect. Works for cloth tape, too.

2012-02-18 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
IMO my Surly Cross-Check is the functional and ride-quality equivalent of the
Atlantis I owned for several years. The LHT is often compared to the Atlantis,
but the LHT is actually quite a bit stiffer/sturdier feeling to me. The
Cross-check is closer to the budget Atlantis. Then I suppose the Pacer is the
nearest Rambouillet equivalent.

Re: [RBW] Recommend more affordable makers of Rivish-type bags please.

2012-10-28 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Here's an old controversy: Duluth Pack and Frost River both made Baggins Bags
for Riv years ago. In fact, both of the linked handlebar bags started life as
the Riv/Baggins Candy Bar bag, if I recall correctly. Of course, nowadays it
would be the beef jerky bag, or something similarly low in carbs. The
controversy was when Frost River continued to use the Baggins designs after Riv
was no longer a customer and GP asked him to stop using the Baggins patterns
under FR's brand (FR used/uses a bike the strongly resembles the Atlantis is
advertising materials...) Duluth Pack was sold to new owners, who reincarnated
the formerly canceled Baggins designs. FR went out of business, but was later
reopened by new owners, who kept the Baggins bags in the lineup.

Re: [RBW] Riv Bombadil... Ultimate Hurricane Bike??

2012-10-30 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Brian formerly of MN makes some salient points about the apocalyptic weather
hereabouts. I rode an Atlantis as my main/only bike for several years in
Minnesota, so it stands to reason that a suitably equipped Bombadil should be
fit for occasional duty in hurricane conditions.

In case my "Yoopanese" heritage isn't obvious, I grew up in Upper Michigan,
which is justifiably noteworthy for long hard winters and rugged desolation,
and where the "gales of November" were immortalized in a well known song. I
have funny memories of my Grandfather sitting by the wood stove in his easy
chair watching the daily horrors on the evening news. If some tropical place
endured a hurricane or California got shook up by an earthquake, he'd say "we
got it pretty goddamned good here", seemingly oblivious to the hardship of the
10 feet of snow falling outside the window, the preceding summer of hard labor
in laying in enough firewood to survive the winter, or the often impassable 60
miles of 2-lane highway between his house and the nearest grocery store
(grocery trips usually required a week of planning...)

[RBW] Re: "Bastardizing" a bike and its fit - idea of. A discussion.

2012-11-01 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
A setback seatpost is hardly "extreme", but among roadie (faux racer)
purists like this defunct LBS owner, any change to the stock part spec had
better have a purported speed/efficiency benefit, or what's the point? I
recently posted a pic of a 2TT Hillborne on facebook. One of my racer-boy
buddies asked "two top tubes? what's the point of that?" He can't conceive

[RBW] Re: OT Why are some unwilling to trade with people out of the US?

2012-11-05 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
I've shipped a lot outside the US. Interestingly, Canada has been the most
troublesome. I hear Canadian customs has a big backlog, and in my experience
month-long waits for customs clearance are not uncommon. The biggest hassle is
not the USPS paperwork, but the buyer being (rightfully) skeptical that his/her
shipment is indeed forthcoming, and me having to urge them to be patient for
another week (or two or three).

2012-11-05 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
The other issue, of course, is cost. For bulkier items that don't fit in a USPS
Priority Mail envelope or small box, the shipping charge can be easily $30-60.
I've had numerous international buyers cancel orders based on shipping quotes.
I can sort of predict it, so it seems like wasted effort to go through the
motions of the calculation.

[RBW] Re: Who rode their bicycle to vote in the US today?

2012-11-07 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Re: Grant's story. Interesting that a person who apparently enjoys Riv's
approach to bicycles would be so hung up on Grant's fairly mainstream political
stance. Is he boycotting half the country? More than likely the mutual interest
in bikes made the dude feel chummy with GP, and that initial chumminess made
the "betrayal" on political philosophy even more profound.

My shop is in a blue-collar area of South Minneapolis, which is a pretty
diverse place. I've learned a lot about people, but the most useful thing I've
learned is that a common interest in bikes does not mean two cyclists have
ANYTHING else in common.

Oh yeah. I walked to my poll twice (registration issues), but only voted once.

[RBW] FS: Tektro CR720 cantilever brakes

I have a surprisingly large number of these, new but no retail packaging.
$15 each shipped (so $30 for a bikesworth). They're black. Come to think of
it, the first brakes I ever bought from Riv (in 2004 for my Atlantis) were
black Shimano cantilevers, so black is not altogether non-rivish.

2012-11-12 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Of course, like I did earlier this year, I allotted 4 days for the rally,
when the "official" ride will be a 2-day Sat/Sun event. The more I think
about the Almanzo idea (mostly in Fillmore County, MN), the more I like it.
I'm envisioning that some of us will do the 4-day version, starting on
Friday in LaCrosse (Amtrak) and spend the day riding through Houston county
on our way to Spring Valley. Spring Valley has a hotel, restaurants,
supermarket, etc. The natural camping choice for Saturday night is
Forestville Mystery Cave State Park.

This ride will go a long way toward dispelling the notion that the midwest,
Minnesota in particular, is flat.

There will definitely be an inn/motel option for the non-campers. But the rally
route won't be all paved trails. Lots of rustic gravel roads, maybe a
treacherous water crossing or two for adventure's sake. That said, there are
many miles of excellent paved bike trails in that area, and that's a nice time
of year to be there. Maybe the rally will be two-pronged: the adventurous
backroad route and the more relaxing route on paved trails. Good idea.

[RBW] Re: strange happenings

2012-11-13 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
I have hypotheses about this:

1. Rain washes debris into the traffic lane, which makes it available for
tires to run over.
2. The water acts as a lubricant to facilitate penetration. It may also
serve as an adhesive to stick the debris to the tire tread.
3. Any debris that is embedded in the rubber may be repeatedly pressurized
as the weight on the tire squeezes water into the hole, forcing the debris
to penetrate deeper.

[RBW] FS: Salsa Vaya Ti 55cm frame/fork $1450 shipped

2012-11-13 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Admittedly this is not exactly Riv-ish, but I figured I'd offer this to my
friends here before taking it to the broader marketplace. Anyway, the
heading says it all: Salsa Vaya titanium 55cm frame with the stock Salsa
black CrMo fork. Condition is nearly new, very low mileage (guessing 200
miles or less). Made in the USA by Lynskey. The Vaya Ti was recently
discontinued, but the frame MSRP was $2000 when it was new - I'd like $1450
shipped in CONUS, or reasonable offer.

C'mon now! Wild speculation is fun, but none of us know the whole story

I fear that this is the kind of talk that devolves quickly into a battle of
inane political ideology, and broad generalizations, insulting stereotypes,
coded innuendo, etc. Personally, I've gotten my fill of that stuff recently.

[RBW] Options for making a Quickbeam a multi speed

2012-11-19 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Some have done bolt-on derailleur hanger conversions. Problem Solvers makes a
neat one that's part chain tensioner, part derailleur hanger. But the best way
to do it is probably to get some sort of IGH. The biggest issue is dropout
spacing. Most IGHs are 130-135 mm, while the QB is 120 mm. Cold-setting is the
obvious solution, but you may be reluctant to bend an expensive frame.
Personally, if it was mine I'd either do a Sturmey Archer 3sp (maybe with 2
chainrings) or I'd sell the bike to buy one with gears.

Re: [RBW] Lock question

2012-11-21 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Sorry to put words in your mouth/keyboard Joe! By "too precious to ride" I also
include "too precious to lock up", since locking up a bike is part of riding
it, at least for me. I have some fancy/expensive bikes, but I've never liked
the feeling of having so much tied up in a bike that it could only be used
under limited circumstances.

I have a hunch that our fancy Rivs and such are actually somewhat
theft-resistant. The average theif knows a Trek is a good bike, but who the
heck is A Homer Hilsen, and why is his name on his bike?! I've been in the bike
biz about 8 years now, and local people tell me when their bikes have been
stolen. Most bikes that get stolen are not expensive, but just in the wrong
place at the wrong time, and most of the time they're not locked at all.
Locking the bike in ANY fashion is MUCH more important than having a great
lock. Closing the garage door when the bike is parked inside would prevent the
vast majority of bike thefts.

[RBW] Re: Are Brooks Saddle Worth the Money?

There are lots of nice saddles that cost less. I keep hoping that I'll find

[RBW] Re: Are Brooks Saddle Worth the Money?

2012-11-23 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
When I first opened Hiawatha Cyclery in 2005-06, my wholesale price on a
standard B17 was $33 and retail prices were $75+. At that time, Brooks was
being acquired by a new owner. That new owner, from my perspective, picked up
on the fact that Brooks had become a boutique brand (partly thanks to Riv!)
that would benefit from a high, exclusive price. The import/distribution
channel also changed. Prices rose pretty dramatically at first during this
transition, then stabilized and rose more slowly to the present $70-75 range
for a B17 (wholesale price for US retailers, who have mostly kept a margins
constant to sell at $110-120). The higher prices must be working because Brooks
now has a huge variety of products they didn't have before. IMO, much of it is
frivolous and way out of my price range, but the high cost of entry certainly
adds an element of swankiness to the brand. I don't buy the ungodly expensive
rain slickers and panniers and such, but I still think the saddles are a good
deal.

Re: [RBW] Lock question

2012-11-25 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Pitlocks are pretty easy to defeat. A downward whack with a blunt object will
knock them out of the dropout. Hopefully you didn't file off those "lawyer
lips".

Of course, all locks are defeatable if you have the right tool and know how.

Personally, I think the best strategy is to use a decent lock (or 2, if I'm
nervous) and park my bike in a thoughtful way - never leave it in the same
place too long or at the same place/time everyday, and bring it inside with me
when possible. Also I don't go to NYC. If I do those things and my bike still
gets stolen, that's amazingly bad luck. But life goes on, it's just a bike.

[RBW] Re: Stem sizing question

2012-11-25 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
I believe in trial and error, and starting with what you have. If you're set on
the Alba/Oxford, it won't cost as much to try it with the stem you have. Of
course you'll need a shim - I'm so glad the 26.0 handlebar "standard" is
(nearly) dead.

Try with the stem you have and then you'll have a better idea on how much
change you need out of your new stem.

Of course, a cheapie Kalloy "dirt drop" style quill stem isn't much more than a
Nitto handlebar shim. The Kalloy stem only comes in 100 mm, which simplifies
things.0

[RBW] FS vintage mountain bikes

2012-12-05 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
I have accumulated a couple time-capsule mountain bikes that may be of
interest to somebody on this list.

1. 1983-84 Specialized Stumpjumper SC, blue, seat-tube 20" c-c, top-tube
22.5" c-c. Bullmoose stem/bar. Still has the (seemingly) original
tan-sidewall Specialized Team Control tires in great shape. Bullseye hubs,
Suntour Mountech derailleurs, Sugino AT crank, heavy-duty Shimano brake
levers and "Unishift Control" friction thumb shifters,
behind-the-seat-tube-mounted Zefal HP frame pump, no saddle or pedals. Some
garage wear and a few minor scrapes and decal imperfection, but otherwise
in really nice condition. It has been stored in a dry garage for probably
15-20 years and probably needs a little air and pro-link, but it's
obviously well cared for and low miles. $600 shipped CONUS.

2. Late 90s Cannondale F700, size Small, seat tube 17" c-t, virtual top
tube approx 20" c-c. Excellent condition, and all original except I
switched to modern Deore levers and Tektro v-brakes and some modern Kenda
semi-knobby tires when I acquired it awhile back for my lady friend, who
never rode it. Mavic 220 rims (Coda fhub, Shimano rhub), XT rder, LX fder,
cool Coda 94/58 crank, SRAM twist shifters, headshock fork. $450 shipped
CONUS.

[RBW] Re: Velocity quality

2012-12-06 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
We've replaced (through Velocity warranty) a large number of cracked
Synergy rims. I think Grant likes them because they're classic eyeletted
box style and they are one of the only mainstream options in 650B with a
brake surface. Velocity told me the more recent production Synergy rims
have a thicker top-wall, which should help. I've been using Dyads and
Aeroheads and the like for myself and numerous customers for 8 years with
no problems whatsoever. We've been getting US-made Velocity rims for the
last several months. Quality looks as good or better than Australian-made
equivalents.

[RBW] Re: Velocity quality

2012-12-10 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
This Velocity cracking problem is almost exclusively an issue with the Synergy
OC model, but Velocity claims to have beefed up the extrusion to fix the
problem (I believe them, but time will tell). I have observed the same problem
with various Mavic rims. I have observed the same problem with Sun CR-18 rims.
I have observed the same problem with DT-Swiss RR series rims. I've observed
the same problem with Salsa rims. I've NOT observed the problem with
non-eyeletted v-profile rims like the Dyad, Aerohead, Aeroheat, A23, Deep V,
HED Belgium, various Stan's NoTubes models, etc. I've also not observed it on
some heavy-duty box rims like the Rhyno Lite, but those rims would be
unacceptably heavy for most of us.

In my opinion, the classic eyeletted box-style rim is just a failure-prone
design. The spoke exerts a strong force perpendicular to the wall of the rim.
That's why the eyelet is necessary. But even with the eyelets, these rims are
apparently not up to the abuse to which we subject them, especially for heavier
riders with a rear-bias to the weight distribution (an effect of
Rivendell-style slack seat tubes and high bars). High tire pressures and rough
roads ridden by us all-rounder types are also a culprit.

[RBW] Why all the miles?

2012-12-10 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
I've done more than a few long, challenging rides up to about 175 miles per day
and 400 miles in 3 days, including an actual brevet or two. "Enjoyment" is a
subjective term. There's the enjoyment of taking in the scenery and enjoying
the ride for its own sake. There's also the enjoyment of pushing through
personal barriers to accomplish something difficult. Sometimes a person can do
both at the same time, sometimes not.

Personally, I don't care for brevets. The specified route and the time cutoff
suck much of the fun out of it for me. I prefer to ramble aimlessly and explore
without a deadline.

[RBW] Re: RIP: Alex Moulton

2012-12-10 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
A friend of mine, who owns a Riv custom, and who was featured in a Riv Reader
years ago, bought a Moulton bicycle for an unbelievably cheap price. I think it
was $10. The storyvwas that it was apparently left at a local racer type shop.
They didn't know what it was, and just dumped it for peanuts.

Sometimes, though, they need a little encouragement. For example, it's very

Seems like anything "new" would be pretty similar to the Hilsen, but
perhaps in a different color and with a different name. The roadish

[RBW] Re: Any new Riv roadish bike on the horizon?

2012-12-14 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
One thing Grant must occasionally think about is that the various models
overlap a lot. Another all-rounder or touring bike would cannibalize from
Hilsen, Atlantis, Hillborne, Hunq, and Bomba sales, since those bikes more than
cover that category. Sure, the new thing could have 26" wheels or different
tubing, but would that really be different enough to make sales that weren't
already gonna happen? Maybe, maybe not.

As long as we're speculating wildly, I'd like to see a true departure from
what already exists. My "vote" is for an ostentatious lugged fat bike. For the
uninitiated, a "fat bike" typically takes 26x4.0" tires on 50-100 mm wide rims,
and the Surly Pugsley is the archetype for the genre. There are getting to be
lots of tires for these, and even silver "foil hat" rims. It's hard to do them
without disc brakes though, which may be a hurdle.

[RBW] My Bleriot resale value diminished because been hit by a car yet no damage?

2012-12-22 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Value of these things is a matter of agreement between the buyer and seller,
and there's no way to know up front if, or how much, the value of your bike
will be affected by the car crash. Even without the car crash, the "value" of a
used Bleriot falls in a wide range. My strategy when selling a used bike,
regardless of its history, is to start at an overly optimistic (high) price and
then gradually reduce the price over time or when it seems like a price
reduction will solidify a tentative sale.

Noah, when I'm not traveling, I lead a Christmas Day and NYD ride in
Minneapolis. Of course, the regular attendees tend to own studded tires.

[RBW] Riding in Marin

2012-12-25 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Today I rode Miwok, Bobcat, Marincello, Tennessee Valley, and Old Springs
Trails in the Marin Headlands. I also detoured to Haypress campground, but
given the sogginess after the all-day rain, I opted to go over the big hill
back to the warmth and excellent coffee of the Marin Headlands Hostel. I'm glad
I did, because the climb up the stair-stepped Old Spring Trail and the Miwok
hillside descent were incredible.

The bike I'm riding is a Surly Disc Trucker with hydraulic disc brakes and
Rohloff. It has some non-Rivish attributes, of course, but it's steel and
traditional geometry and has ample clearance for my 26x2.0 Schwalbe Mondials
and fenders. Anyway, after coming down the long descent of the Marincello
trail, which is basically a narrow, fairly smooth gravel road, not single
track, I took shelter from the downpour under a big tree. A couple minutes
later a man and a woman on full-suspension MTBs came down the same trail. They
carried on for several minutes in the parking lot, punctuated by hoots and
hollers and repetitive use of a new word for me "crazeballs", about how
"intense" their descent had been. Grant has written about how extreme equipment
tends to make mundane experiences seem more extreme - like the high adventure
of driving a Land Rover to pick up the groceries. I thought the Marincello
descent was fun and beautiful, but never for a second did I feel that I was
having an extreme experience or pushing the limits of my old-fashioned,
unsuspended steel bike.

I guess I wouldn't bother with studs for recreational riding if I lived in
Boulder. If, on the other hand, I was riding for transportation, and couldn't
pick and choose weather conditions, then the studs make more sense.

[RBW] Re: Riding in Marin

2012-12-27 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Not looking down on them at all. I rode trails today for which a FS bike would
have been more appropriate. If you live in this area and just have one bike, a
FS bike is a reasonable option for some. I still think that "extreme" equipment
makes mundane experiences seem more exciting sometimes, but there's nothing
wrong with that.

Today I saw a dude with a purple Riv custom on top of Mt Tam. The Riv had
leather tape, acorn bags, and Paul center pulls. I tried to engage the guy in
conversation, but he hurriedly left without saying much. His buddy was on a
steel bianchi with berthoud bags.

2012-12-29 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Decided to stay in an inn in Bolinas last night for the much needed shower and
a chance to wash/dry my clothes and other gear. Now I'm camping at Steep Ravine
with Manny Acosta and his buddies. Manny paid me a nice compliment when he
said, "I'm glad you didn't turn out to be a creep." Little does he know...

Anyway, Steep Ravine is an amazing place. Why most of the campsites are vacant
right now is a mystery.

[RBW] First RBW visit

2012-12-31 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
After about 9 years of being a Riv fan/rider/dealer, I made my first visit to
Riv today. I walked into the showroom, and there is Grant sitting at a table in
the middle of the room having an intense discussion with a Frenchish sorta man
who I presume to be Yves Gomez. Unfortunately Grant wasn't available to
chitchat, but Mark and Brian invited me in for coffee and to talk shop. What a
great bunch!

Brian gave me some instruction about where to camp in the Diablo foothills
nearby. Surely I bungled his directions, but I think I found a pretty good spot
on the top of a big hill. The view is nice, but the sun just set, and it's
getting chilly. I guess I'll set up my tent.

Happy new year everybody!

2012-12-31 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Grant, it's cool. I'll just have to visit again sometime! I'm camped just
around the corner from RBW now.

I'm having a great trip. Manny is great, as are some new friends I met through
him.

Turns out a lady I've known since kindergarten lives here, in Danville. Her
last name was Thomas back then, so we always sat next to each other in school.
I'm going to have breakfast with her in the morning. Hopefully she's not too
shocked at how stinky I've become in the two decades since we've seen each
other! Then a bit later I meet up with another semi-local character I know
through the Internet. That means I won't be on the official Diablo ride at
9:30, but I have some faith that I'll intersect with that group at some point
during the day's meanderings.
