Re: [RBW] Re: Terrible News

2013-07-11 Thread Jack Warman
Friends,

Some more info about the goings-on here and online.

First, the service for Seth is this Saturday at 11a ET at Clements Funeral
Home 1105 Broad St., Durham, NC. You can leave remembrances for Seth on
Clements site:

http://www.clementsfuneralservice.com/memsol.cgi?user_id=1032792

Seth's partner, Eunice, told me "the remembrances are helping," so I
encourage all of you to share the kind words you've posted here with his
family through Clements' site. In addition to their being able to see them
now during this difficult time, they will also be able to view them later
when they have left Durham for home.

Also, I told Eunice that many of you wanted to be in touch, and she gave
the thumbs up for sharing their physical address. Honestly, you could get
it on your own via the Google machine, but please know that she's
comfortable hearing from any of you who are interested in sending a
postcard or other sort of note.

Ms. Eunice Chang
2309 Woodrow St
Durham , NC 27705

A local shop that Seth frequented has a monthly ride that he and Eunice
often joined, and as the ride is the second Sunday of the month, it happens
to hit this weekend and is in Seth's honor. Looks to be much bigger than
normal this month. Come if you can.

https://www.facebook.com/events/295397680605055/

And, the Fedora Project website has a nice Seth tribute up on their
homepage:

http://fedoraproject.org/

Thanks again for all the kind words about Seth, and the great vibes sent my
direction as well. It's been a difficult week, but its been buffered
substantially by the tremendous outpouring of love that have been shown to
Seth's family and friends from all of the many communities in which he was
active.

Best
Jack

Re: [RBW] Terrible News

2013-07-10 Thread Jack Warman
You're welcome. Everything that folks here have noted is true. I know
Seth enjoyed the owners bunch quite a bit - conversations from this group
shifted to our lunch conversations on more than one occasion. And talking
about all of you was no different from talking about our IRL friends here
in Durham.

I will keep all of you in the loop on goings-on here. There will likely be
several bike-related events, to be certain. A first informal one is being
hosted by a local shop that he frequented (one of many) this Sunday and
there will be others.

If this group would like to coordinate something that would benefit from
any on-the-ground activities, please don't hesitate to contact me.
Emailing me directly would be best, jack.warman at gmail.

[RBW] My "new" bike build

2012-05-23 Thread Jack Warman
Greetings from Durham, NC!

At long last, I am happy to be able to share a "new" bike build pic with
you. It's not a Riv, but I hope you'll indulge me nonetheless. :-)

Why is "new" in quotes? Well, my Surly LHTrucker isn't new, it's a 2007.
And, I didn't buy it new, nor is it even new-to-me, I got it in 2009.

But, as some of you may know, the maroon 2007 Truckers had notoriously bad
powdercoating. It was already flaking badly when I bought it in Feb 2009,
so going into the purchase, I knew I would ultimately want to re-powdercoat
the bike. And, in the few years since, I have learned a bit more about my
cycling, and improvements I would like to make to the bike.

First, I wish it had a kickstand plate like some other well-designed bikes
we know and love. And second, I really missed the stem shifters to which I
grew accustomed while riding my old Panasonic.

So, I added an upgrade project to the inevitable powdercoating project and
this spring, I had shifter bosses added to the headtube and a proper
kickstand plate added where only a kickstand plate ought be added.

The build was just completed by a local shop (wish I knew how to do such
things - someday maybe) and they sent me a pic. I pick up my Trucker this
evening. It will be a struggle for me to be anything but worthless this
afternoon. :-)

Riv content: Silver shifters, Newbaum's bar tape, Nitto bar end plugs and
the "Just Ride" spirit.

My "new" blue Trucker (with maroon bar tape) can be seen here:

Cheers

Indeed. I shoved a book under my armpits and sent them my measurements.
The size they gave me was bigger than anything I'd worn before. I was
skeptical but I trusted the advice of everyone on this list that Riv's size
would be spot on and sure enough it was.

O... and those lugged sleeves. Simply spectacular!

Re: [RBW] Hennessy Hammocks for bike camping

2011-08-31 Thread Jack Warman
I just started Hennessey camping this season and only made it out a few
times with mine. All told, I've done probably a half dozen nights in it.

The comments about your underside being cool are true. The first time I
went out in it, I had my Wiggy bag and vapor barrier and what I thought to
be ample sleep clothing for the weather. I fell asleep, and woke up 40
minutes later with one cold side. I rolled over and was thrilled to be warm
again... for about another 40 minutes. Much of the night was like that.
:-) Last spring I found their winter kit on sale and I got it. I haven't
been out in even Autumn like weather in it, but it was good in late Spring.

Good way t stealth camp, too, if you're into that sort of thing. I was
scouting locations this past weekend and actually stumbled upon a small
pedestrian bridge over a little babbling brook and realized it would be a
piece of cake to hang the tent under it. I'm determined to try it some day.
 :-)

Oh, and I hosted an S24O here in NC in early June. About a dozen folks came
out, and we had 6 hammocks, 5 of them Hennessey. :-) Its a good way to go!

Enjoy,
Jack

Re: [RBW] Bike Tour Stuff.

2011-04-24 Thread Jack Warman
I can't speak to "average," but for a 3-4 day trip, I typically roll out of
the house with 50-55 lbs.

My biggest weight splurges are my coffee setup (I'm a bit of a snob in that
area). I carry a grinder, filters a filter cone, scoop and several pounds
of coffee - for my spring group tour, enough for a half dozen guys for 4
days. All this probably accounts for 10% of my weight.

Other splurge is my camp chair. It has not provided the value I wanted, as
I've always found myself in places with ample picnic table seating. But I
was told early in my touring adventures that it's worth having a chair
around after a good long day on the saddle. The chair gets one last chance
this spring. :-) It, too, accounts for about 10%.

Everything else is a little heavier than it would be were I hiking. I figure
it's worth taking advantage of the fact that I'm on wheels rather than feet.

[RBW] On-bike battery power (was: cycle computer)

Well, Ken didn't specify how much run time he wanted, just a large display.
 :-)

I use a New Trent rechargeable battery brick to power my phone on my bike.
I keep it in a Soma Munch Box and run a USB cable from there to my
handlebar mount. The New Trent version I have holds 8900 mAh, which is a
lot of juice. I tested it one weekend on an all-day event that included
80-ish miles of gps usage in addition to various off-bike activities. When
I pedaled back into my driveway 13 hrs later, my phone battery was at 100%
and my New Trent was still at 75%.

And the new bricks hold 11,000 mAh. They're a little spendy, but, imo, a
pretty worthwhile investment for bike camping, randonneuring and other times
you're interested in keeping something charged without ready access to a
plug.

A Motorola Droid X with Run GPS offers a pretty large display as well
(MyTracks is decent, too). And, it'll play music from your handlebars and
let you call home, too. :-)
