Yeah -- if Universal has the parts you want in stock for your wheels, they
get them to you scary fast for custom wheels. The three pairs I have had
from them were all built incredibly well.

60cm still in stock. Really considering it for myself still. Just bought
deck lumber yesterday however and that cost about as much as a Platy
complete would. I've told myself if there is a 60cm come Monday, I can do
it.

I am thrilled to see these go so fast. I am humming and hawing about making
a financially irresponsible decision to buy a 60cm for myself! They look so
good.

I hope everything gets sorted on the color for those of you wanting mermaid
but with a lime-olive invoice.

Leah's video was a HUGE help in the decision making process for my dad's
bike. It highlighted the differences and dismounting very well. My dad was
totally blown away that someone would be so kind as to go through that
effort for a stranger. I was, too. Ultimately, my dad decided that if we
are spending this kind of money, he wants a bike that he is confident will
fit until his days on earth are through. This will be a big step up from
his Surly. So, we're going from the gorgeous mermaid platy to the Clem L --
still a beautiful bike -- but just not that pretty color I was so excited
to see.

The RBW community came through as well in helping me track down a 59cm Clem
L complete. Mark of Saturday Cycles in SLC, UT reached out that they had
one in stock. It will be packed up and sent to the PNW in the coming week.

I got a referral bonus at work and depending on my partner, Elise, maybe I
will get a platypus of my own. It will hold me over until my custom frame
being built by a friend in SLC, UT is done this summer.

Thank you all! I cannot wait to see wild Platypii here and in the wild.

Re: [RBW] Re: To My Platypus People!

2021-03-29 Thread Jonny P
Joe & Leah, thank you both for the replies. They're helpful in the decision
making process. It sounds from both of you like stepping through is a
little easier on the Clem than that Cheviot/Platypus. Given RBW propensity
to not really give frame measurements, it is hard for me to discern just
what kind of difference we are talking about here. The steeper angle down
then the swoop up on the Clem is probably the reason for that. When I
called and spoke with Will a few weeks ago, he made it sound like
difference in step through height is negligible -- yet both of you make it
seem it is more than that. A little thinking to do, for certain.

Do we even know when the Clem L's will be back in stock? 2021? 2022?
Perhaps I am concerned that it might be a great deal of time, and my buying
the frame for a dad who has provided me with a good foundation in life --
it makes the price difference not matter much. I want him to have a
comfortable bike sooner than later. But, maybe some wait is worth it.

Joe -- If I recall, you put a Clean Republic Hilltopper on an Appaloosa? My
dad rides with one of these wheels. It seems the Clem or Platy could handle
it given the e-assist isn't really a huge amount of power. Thoughts?

Thank you both!

Re: [RBW] Re: To My Platypus People!

2021-03-29 Thread Jonny P
Well Emily & Leah -- The excitement was short lived. Kevin went to call up
Riv, and since I missed the initial pre-order, Golden Pliers could not
actually order my frame for dad. Guess that's Riv policy. Thursday it is
for me. I set a block of time on my calendar so no one will bug me and I
will be sure to get one.

My dad does know this bike is being built for him. We spent a week in the
San Juan Islands riding our bikes and kayaking early in March. He realized
his bars on his surly were not high enough, his back hurt, and he has lost
the mobility to easily hop on and off a bike with a horizontal top tube. He
asked me what options there are for step throughs in his size with 700c
wheels. I pointed out the Clem, the Platypus, and the Soma Buena Vista
Disc. He liked the Soma for price, but I have had an awful experience with
Soma in the past so I ushered him to Rivendell. We were going to go with
the Clem L at first -- but he is mostly using this bike for daily 10-15
mile rides around vineyards and orchards in Cornelius, Oregon. The Platypus
is a little lighter and he didn't want to maximize to the 2.4" tire
capability on the clem. 700x45 on the Platypus with Billie Bars and a
fillet brazed stem all seem like they'll get his bars higher, his back in a
better position, and ease of getting on and off.

Leah - is it your experience that getting on and off the Platypus is pretty
effortless and doesn't require a wild swing of the leg?

[RBW] WTB 59cm Clem Smith Jr. L - Frameset preferable

2021-03-16 Thread Jonny P
Hi all --

I am working on building my older father a bike. He has finally accepted he
cannot use drops anymore and that he cannot swing his leg over the top tube
of his bike. So, I introduced him to the idea of building a Clem L, and he
is excited and on board.

He uses a Clean Republic Hilltopper front wheel e-assist on his surly he
currently rides. This has standard 100mm spacing -- so the front wheel will
work just fine in a Clem Smith Jr. Fork. It is a very minor assist, but
helps him get up the hills near his house just west of Portland, OR.

If any of you have thoughts of selling your Clem Smith Jr. L in 59cm size,
please reach out. We are willing to pay up to the retail cost provided the
condition of the frame and the inclusion of Headset, Bottom Bracket, and
Seatpost as the frame comes directly from Rivendell.

Thank you!

[RBW] Re: Who wants a Hunqadiscer?

2018-02-05 Thread Jonny P
I mean, it may just be me, but I feel like the Crust Romanceur with a 26"
wheelset is a great alternative for those of you wanting a Disc
Hunqapillar-ish bike at a Taiwan price.

I am still lusting after a true Hunqapillar, but my Romanceur with Velocity
Duallys and RTP tires is pretty darned comparable to my friends 56cm 650b
Hunqapillar that I rode. The Hunq just felt a little bit
longer/heavy/Rivendell-esque.

[RBW] Re: UnRacer community in SLC?

2017-09-12 Thread Jonny P
SLC has a very underrated cycling scene. Sure, there are plenty of Tour of
Utah types, but I miss living at the south end of Salt Lake County,
honestly. I helped direct the Provo branch of the Bicycle Collective while
in my undergrad studies. I loved it there. My dearest friends -- many
Riv/Bridgestone types all were from the Collective. Most of us have moved
to the coasts now

Every Monday night in Provo there is a very unRacer style ride. It usually
involves a slow pace up a nearby canyon or on country roads out to the
mountains on the west side of Utah Lake.

Salt Lake has the 999 ride that had a Hilsen and Hunqapillar present the
last time I rode with the group (Oct 2017). We rode up City Creek Canyon,
shared some beverages, then a smaller group of us stuck around and rode for
Tacos near the mouth of Little Cottonwood Canyon.

Saturday Cycles is the only traditional LBS I am aware of that will meet
what you're looking for. However, I have friends who work a Bingham Cyclery
as managers/mechanics who are Riv folk. The Big S customers just help more
to pay the bills, I suppose?
