[RBW] Re: Front Low-rider Panniers on Rambouillet?

2017-01-04 Thread KTY
Hey Kieran, FWIW I used my old Ram for lighter touring and it did great,
including with a front load (I had a nitto campee with low riders) of
reasonable weight.

I'm no gram weenie, but with today's gear technologies I see no reason to
carry more than 20 pounds for all the basics of shelter, clothing, food,
tools, etc., and that's easily cut in half by using ultralight backpacking
principles. It's remarkable how light of a load you can carry without
sacrificing any comfort. Today I use a light tubed rando bike with a
handlebar bag and low riders for bike camping, while my actual "touring"
bike is now my around town mule.

[RBW] Re: Long/scenic day rides to do from the New York City area

2016-05-17 Thread KTY
Bob, thanks for sharing these. Are you familiar with the Riding the
Catskills blog? It's not being updated anymore, but there's a great archive
or rides on there. Many can be accomplished by going up on MetroNorth and
crossing over the river. It would be a long day, but totally doable. Or
better yet, take a shelter and make an overnight of it. The one thing about
the Catskills is that cell reception is very spotty, and the roads are
quite confusing. So, take a good map or even a GPS. There's so so much good
riding up there.

Westchester is also great to explore, also off the Metro-North or by riding
up from the city.

Have fun,
Kolby

Thanks, Bill. Point taken about the rack. That's still quite a bit lower

Perhaps I'll have to try eBay after all. :(

*My upgrades: *

[RBW] Re: Pass & Stow Porteur Rack Experiences.

2016-03-13 Thread KTY
No mention yet of the SOMA porteur here, but I've been using it for 4+
years on my commuter, and I can't recommend it highly enough. I've carried
everything from 30 pounds of books to an old Weber grill that I found on
the side of the road, disassembled, and strapped on. Putting a basket on a
porteur kinda defeats the purpose, though. The table itself is highly
versatile. Velo Orange sells a duffle bag that integrates well with a
porteur rack.

[RBW] FS: Grand Bois Cypres Tires (< 300 miles), $75

2015-12-29 Thread KTY
Selling a pair of Grand Bois Cypres (700x32) with less than 300 miles of
use. Regular, not extra light model. Tan sidewalls.

These are great tires in great shape, aside from some darkening of the
sidewalls from dirt. I've had them on my (too little used) Rambouillet for
a year and love them. I got a pair of the Barlow Pass for xmas and plan to
go with those for awhile.

$75 shipped CONUS. Friends and family paypal.

Contact me directly: kolbyt at gmail dot com.

Thx!

[RBW] Re: Advice Needed from Bike Campers

2014-06-10 Thread KTY
Also, as long as we're on the subject of sleep systems, these down quilts
are handmade with top notch materials and about half the price of what they
would be from Montbell, WM, or any other high end MUSA manufacturer:
http://www.hammockgear.com
It's a boutique shop, longer wait times, but well worth it. These would
work just as well with ground systems (a Neo Air) as with hammocks. That
said, hammocks are frankly the perfect solution for bike touring -- and
lightweight backpacking. Here's a great intro, if you're not familiar with
hammocks: http://andrewskurka.com/2012/hammocks-advantages-disadvantages/

[RBW] FS: Wiggy's summer bag, $75

2014-01-01 Thread KTY
For sale: Wiggy's quilted summer bag, rated to +40F. Color: Coyote. $75
shipped CONUS.

Read more about it here: http://wiggys.com/moreinfo.cfm?Product_ID=302

I bought this from Wiggy in late summer and used it on one backpacking trip
only. The warmth to weight ratio isn't really ideal for backpacking,
especially with a hammock sleep system (I'm replacing it with a Mountain
Laurel Designs Spirit Quilt). That said, it's an excellent summer bag if
you're touring or car camping or traveling to far-flung places.

Thanks David. I'm thinking the same. The fit would be right--my Rom is a 59.
How much more life do you think those components have in them?

Was hoping I might get a little more for the Rom here in NYC. Still would be
taking a loss--I overpaid by 40%. Ouch. That's how you learn, I guess.

[RBW] Re: FS: Blue 60 cm Ramboullet in So Cal

2013-02-23 Thread KTY
Considering this and would welcome some advice/feedback.

I've been corresponding with the seller. He's the original owner, has put
about 10k miles on it. Components all look original. Seems well cared for,
but I'm relying on photos and info, as I'm not in LA (though my brother is
and could inspect/buy it for me). I'm interested in this as an upgrade from
my Romulus, which I would then sell after transferring the handlebars,
saddle, and Cypres tires. I like my Rom a lot but the fancier details,
extra water bottle bosses, and deep blue of the Ram have always appealed to
me. (I'm aware that the Rom was the budget version of the Ram,
essentially.) Thoughts?

[RBW] WTB: Wedge Saddlebag (VO Croissant)

2013-02-11 Thread KTY
Dear Riv Listers:

Before hitting 'purchase' on a new, Velo Orange Croissant Saddlebag, I
thought I'd check in here first in case someone has a lightly used model
that needs a new home. Here's the bag:

http://store.velo-orange.com/index.php/vo-crossaint-saddle-bag.html

I'd be open to other wedge designs such as the Acorn med saddlebag.
However, the VO seems best for my needs, as it's optimized to attach
directly to saddle rails rather than loops; and I'd be putting it on an old
Brooks saddle w/out loops.

Hit me up off list at kolbyt at gmail dot com.

Thanks!

[RBW] WTB: Brooks Flyer

A Brooks Flyer was recently up for grabs here, and I missed it by a hair.
Still, the seed was planted...

If anyone has a spring B17 in lightly used condition and wants to part with

I recently maxed out the height on my Nitto stem and am loving the upright

[RBW] WTB: 650b wheelset, long-reach brakes

2012-10-25 Thread KTY
I've recently converted my old Maruishi tourer to a commuter, and love it
but for the 27 1/4 tires, which are a tight fit under the longboards and
leave a lot to be desired in the way of comfort on NYC's gnarly pavement.

If it can be done affordably, I'd like to convert to 650b, so... anyone
have a not-too-heavily-used 650b wheelset to sell? Please hit me up here or
off-list: kolbyt at gmail dot com. And as long as I'm asking, doing this
would require some long reach brakes (e.g. the Dia Compes). Provided I can
get a wheelset, that is.

Thanks,
Kolby
