No knee replacements yet. So far, a change in diet and rehab has delayed it.

I had rotator cuff surgery several years ago.  I was back at work in a
month (no sling) and riding my bike in a couple of months.

Don't wait until your surgery to do the rehab. Stretch and do the weight
work now.

Like Michael says, there's a pretty good chance all you need to do is rehab
and surgery is unnecessary.

 in my left shoulder for some time (probably initially due to a bike wreck)
 but worsened the injury moving oak logs (for firewood) mid-fall. For those
 who know the jargon, it's a SLAP tear.

 Searching for info about cycling and recovery from this kind of surgery
 has left me a bit blue. It looks like 4-6 weeks in a sling, then very slow
 4-6 months to full use.

 Ironically, I'd just received a 54cm Sam Hillborne frame the week I tore
 it. The frame is now fully built and sits unused.

 My questions are: Has anyone on the list had the surgery and, if so, what
 was your recovery like? And, what's the best wisdom from the group
 regarding cycling and recovery from SLAP repairs?

 Unfortunately, I haven't had a very good experience dealing with Riv. I
 rarely received repair updates unless I constantly emailed them and the
 final straw was the painting.

 Other lacking customer service was at the start of the repair when Riv
 said that they would send the bike to Bernie Mikkelsen for the repair and a
 few days later Riv said the bike would go to Steve Rex. When I asked for a
 clarification Riv responded that I could go ahead with Bernie if I chose
 but Steve Rex is dependable. I wouldn't question their recommendation, so
 why turn it into a selection on my part?

 Riv also asked at the beginning if I had another bike to which I responded
 I did not and no offer of a replacement so why ask? However, after
 complaining directly to Grant about the painting I got an offer of a
 replacement bike. However, no direct response from Grant. Offer came from
 an employee. Riv is a small company so why wouldn't Grant respond himself?

 I'm pleased that Riv stands behind their products by doing the repair for
 free, but the customer service was somewhat lacking.

 by ride if it has any more or less drag than the SON28 it felt the same.
 It's also smaller and lighter than the SON28 but I couldn't tell that from
 riding either.  Overall my first impressions are that this is a viable
 alternative to the SON at 1/2 the price.   Guess time will tell how it's
 longevity is.

If you're going to be riding in country dark I would say it's almost
impossible to have too much lighting.

However if you can ride 124 miles in less than 8 hours I wouldn't worry
about lights.

Find someone that rides at your speed and stay with them.

I'm riding a brevet on January 1 also.  The weather is predicted to be
nice.  I would never ride a winter brevet without a fendered bike though.
The weather is pretty unpredictable here in Oregon.

Don't forget to eat and drink and bring extra clothes.

Don't forget to have fun.

 riding with had a GPS that announced all the turns!

 I brought enough food this time for the entire ride, and that helped too
 - saved me a lot of time and made it possible for me to stay with the
 guy with the GPS.

 Those extra 25 miles or so over a century may be a big deal, or they may
 be nothing.  Three or four years ago a century got extended by 10 miles
 due to high water (couldn't take the ferry, had to go the long way
 around) and those extra 10 miles were completely disheartening.  Last
 year, the extra 25 miles were nothing when riding, but on the drive home
 I found I couldn't lift my leg high enough to move it over to the brake
 pedal, so I had to brake left-footed.  This year, it was nothing at all.

 Speaking of the drive home, that may be the biggest factor for you.
 There was a discussion about this not long ago on one of the lists I
 belong to, and some of the experienced randonneurs said they made it a
 point to take a nap before driving home.  It's a bad business to fall
 asleep behind the wheel!

Also, you should practice changing a tire in the dark sometime before the
brevet.

I'm also 5'6 with a 79 PBH and I ride a 53cm Atlantis.

I started with a 51 and traded it for a 53.  The top tube is a little long
but I use an 8cm dirt drop.

I really think that you should go with the bigger bike unless you're running
really fat tires and doing alot of offroad.

 Hummers (mtn bikes) oh, and a few Yugos (today's standard hybrids) and
 a few Jeep Wranglers (low-end mountain bikes). A ludicrous proposition
 (though sensible cars *are* few and far between), yet that is what the
 mainstream bike industry looks like today.

 So, thanks, Grant and everyone who is dedicated to showing there is an
 alternative.

 The bad thing is that because racing style bikes are so
  prevalent, they dominate the market and make it harder for good,
  reliable equipment to be available at a reasonable price. The big
  example of that is Mavic removing its MA2 rim from the market.
  Arguably one of the best clincher rims ever made.
 
  Similarly, back in 2008, when  I was building up my steel cross/
  commuter bike, Paul Taylor breakaway, I wanted silver parts to match
  my black with gold paneled frameset. It may sound funny, but silver
  parts were not that easy to find! On my own, I was able to find most
  parts used or NOS and my LBS luckily sold Nitto bars and threadless
  stem. Of course, this was before VO started carrying more silver
  parts. Still, it was harder than sourcing black components which seem
  to be abundant in all price ranges. Good Luck!

The soma buena vista comes in a 42cm size.  The salsa vaya comes in a 50cm
although according to the geometry chart, the seat tube measures 45cm.

Funny Portland story.

I rode in the Worst Day of the Year ride in February with my friend
Christine.

We both had winterized bikes with full fenders.

In the middle of the ride we noticed that everyone was covered with mud
except us.

At the finish, we looked at the parked bikes.

We counted the first 100 bikes we saw.

Two of them had full fenders.

industrial mayonnaise jar in my basement.  I also have four pairs of pari
motos on the way.  I eventually will hoard 4 pairs of every known 650b tire
known to mankind.

Also I have an extra unused 650b wheelset.  I have two hubsets that I want
to have built up for my 650b stockpile.

I think that there's still new 650b bikes being introduced.  Don't forget
about the Velo Orange Polyvalent.  Also I believe that the Longleaf P/R
prototype will be arriving soon.

 small importers/manufacturers like Jan Heine with the Gran Bois and
 now Pacenti with his Pari-Moto, but they have yet to get their tires
 into the QBP catalog or on any Treks. I was pleasantly surprised to
 see another of my mainstream distributors pick up some 650B stuff, but
 again, it was mostly of the MTB variety.

 I'm not sure Rivendell and a few custom framebuilders can sell enough
 650B bikes to support much expansion, or even maintain current levels
 of the 650B rim/tire selection and availability. Unless the 650B size
 gets picked up by Trek or some other major player, I think its future

That bicycle uses ISO 559mm wheels and tires.  That is standard mountain
bike size.

I'd also use the tektro big mouth brake calipers to get a bigger tire in
there.

I bought my Atlantis at Aaron's.  I have a 79cm pbh and he put me on a 51cm
bike with a very tall nitto stem.

Within 6 months I decided it was too small for me.  Fortunately someone on
the ibob list had the exact opposite problem.

Their Atlantis was too big and they wanted a smaller bike.  I ended up
trading it for a 53cm and was much happier with the fit.

By the way, I'm not trying to trash Aaron. He seemed like a nice enough
guy.   I'm sure he has a reason for doing things the way he does.  I just
ended up preferring a bigger bike.

 I agree - I think most of these people appear to have frames that are
 too small, based on too much seat post extension as well as the tall
 stems. I wouldn't go there for a fitting.

 The one time I actually rode it off road (fire roads, 2nd photo) it
 was kinda fun, but it made a pretty poor city bike IMHO.  It was quite
 heavy, and the slack angles made for EXTREMELY twitchy slow-speed
 handling with lots of wheel flop.  I'd intended it as a bike for my
 wife, but those issues were deal-breakers for her, so this one didn't
 make the cut.
