[RBW] Re: What saddles are women using on their Riv mixtes?

2022-02-02 Thread Lesli Larson
I used a wider Brooks saddle that was "pre-softened" and came with a
slightly textured or weatherized top. I'm not sure if they still make this
model. The only one I see with a similar profile comes with
springs:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/archivalclothing/2495391987/in/album-72157605078010434/

I tend to like the wider top of the Brooks for more upright city riding.

I also like the Pearl from Rivet
cycles: https://rivetcycleworks.com/product/the-pearl/

Alas, I never see these in my pint sized dimensions.

Joe,

Thank you! I found them. Odd. I had never heard of this model (this is what
happens when you jump away from the list for awhile). That toptube is lng
(on paper I would be a more likely candidate for the 48cm but breaking out my
tape measure to confirm). Best, Lesli larson

If I missed it, what are the seat and top tube measurements? I am closer to a

[RBW] Re: New ROADEO

2020-01-13 Thread Lesli Larson
Rich,

Thank you for the notes and prompts. It's always a bit of an easter egg
hunt to find the right and still available Riv frames (via dealers and
email inquiries). I'm thinking the 47cm or 50cm Roadini might be the ticket
(raising an internal subdebate about whether I would prefer 650b or 700c on
this bike).

Side note: I saw a really nice Atlantis build at the Rivelo shop in PDX. 56
cm with 650b wheels. It would be a great bike for the right person.

I appreciate the notes on the Hilsen as well.

Best,

Re: [RBW] Crowd sourcing ideas for vintage parts for a new randonneuring rig (semi sort of WTB)

2017-07-23 Thread Lesli Larson
Patrick-

As always - thanks for your wisdom. I'm definitely looking for functional
vintage over spendy pretty bits.

The bike will be for serious rando so durability is an issue. I just don't
like how most new/tech parts look so I'm always erring on side of shopping
from the past where I can secure something that will look nice and still
perform a job.

I'm very intersted in Shimanon derailleurs that you mention. I'm just not
sure which vintage to target.

I'm current running friction on my bike with a TA crank and XTR rear. Not
sure about the front derailleur.

This bike has a compact double with a wide cluster in the back - requiring
medium/long cage rd.

I use the Tektro levers with the quick release button. I'd like to buy
vintage aero levers if i can find one with the equivalent reach.

I'm also looking for a lightweight handlebar that works for smaller hands.
I use an on one midge bars which I like because of the short reach and wide
top part. Most of the Nitto offerings are just too large/wide. I need
something with a shallow drop.

Not sure if anyone is making lightweight classic looking parts (ala Nitto)
for smaller/shorter cyclists (and women).

[RBW] Crowd sourcing ideas for vintage parts for a new randonneuring rig (semi sort of WTB)

2017-07-19 Thread Lesli Larson
It's been awhile since I sourced parts for a new bike. I haven't done this
since I ordered my custom Riv ages ago.

Use: randonneuring

Question: what's the current wisdom regarding classic long cage
derailleurs, front derailleurs, rear hubs (freewheel or cassette),
seatposts and shifts?

Have things gotten crazy expensive or is vintage still a viable alternative
to new stuff.

I'm sorry I missed out on the Riv Phil hub (what I have on my older road
bike).

I already have Mafac racers, a TA crank, and a set of Campy brake levers in
hand.

I'm a female with smallish hands and shortish stature. I'm going to set the
bike up as a compact double with either bar-ends or downtube shifters.

Wondering whether folks recommend in the way of classic, duable, stylish,
lightweight parts? New or old.

Let me know if you have anything for sale that might match my shopping list!

[RBW] Re: Need help replicating Riv custom on a budget - for a shortish female friend

2014-10-26 Thread Lesli Larson
Thanks. These are great options and confirmed my suspicions that I should
be watching the used market as well. I always want to buy new but ended up
believing a better value and better product can be sourced from the past,
so to speak.

I would love to find a 47cm or 50 cm Riv frame - especially an Atlantis -
that could be build up by my local shop, Blue Heron Bicycles.

Curious to know how folks feel about the San Marcos versus the used Riv
option. I'm taken aback a bit about the long top tube on even the smaller
frames.

wider brooks saddle, honjos and 38c grand bois tires. It's such a fun bike

I've been shopping around for a stock 650b frame for her that could be
built up into an upright, go fast, weekender bike. We're in the Surly/Soma
budget when it comes to the frame. Sadly, most of these bikes seems to be
made for 700c wheels or have extra long top tubes (even for bikes that are
 47cm).

Send me your frame suggestions. Right now, our target is the Soma San
Marcos which I believe takes 650b in smaller sizes. We're working with a
terrific shop in Brooklyn. I just wanted to solicit the group for any
extra knowledge of stock frames that we might also want to evaluate.

[RBW] Need help replicating Riv custom on a budget - for a shortish female friend

2014-10-25 Thread Lesli Larson
I'm helping a friend source a new (or possibly) used bike to replicate my
own Riv custom which has a 50cm seat tube and a 50 cm top tube. My bike,
originally a rando rig, is now set up with porteur bars, inverse levers,
wider brooks saddle, honjos and 38c grand bois tires. It's such a fun bike
to ride. In my friends words, the bike changed her life, or at least,
attitude about bike fit and comfort. My friend and I are both 5'3 and ride
bikes in the 48cm to 50 cm range.

Regards,

Lesli Larson
Eugene, Oregon

[RBW] WTB: Midge bars

2014-07-09 Thread Lesli Larson
I'm trying to track down a pair of On One Midge bars with a 25.4 clamp -
preferably in silver finish (though I will toil to scrub off black
anodization). Looks like distributor is moving to a wider clamp sizes and
no longer has these in stock.

[RBW] Retrofitting Riv custom for rails to trails riding

2014-02-19 Thread Lesli Larson
A few weeks ago I wrote in seeking info on ideas for a classic, riv style
MTB bikes for trail riding. I still have my eye on a Bomdadil but now I'm
eyeballing my Riv custom rando bike as a possible makeshift trail rig. I
use a different bike now for brevets so the Riv is currently set up as more
of a commuter with porteur bars, inverse levers, Pauls centerpulls, and
basic 650x1 tires.

If I remove the fenders I'm wondering what more I would need to do to
retrofit the bike for rails to trails riding - typically rough pavement and
some hard packed dirt?

I'll be on a three day tour and might require a few more hand positions. I
anticipate riding on roads for a fair portion of the ride.

I already have pretty low, 1x1 gearing from rando riding. Shifting is via
downtube shifters and a vintage, long cage Campy derailleur.

Wondering what I might want to do about tires (go wider?) and the bars (go
back to drops or midge bars)?

Front wheel has a generator hub but that seems like a good thing for trail
riding.

As much as I love to buy new bicycles, I'm trying to shop from myself
more for project bikes or seasonal adventuring.

The question here is whether I'm forcing the Riv into a bike it is not
instead of sourcing a low budget MTB via craigslist for this kind of
specific use case.

Here's what the bike looks like in its rando state:

[RBW] Re: Retrofitting Riv custom for rails to trails riding

2014-02-19 Thread Lesli Larson
I'm really tempted to peel off the fenders and just try the widest possible
tire as a way to explore a new and different side of the Riv design (it's
made for a terrific city bike this year). How do Albatross bars work for
multi day rides?? I have a spare pair of those as well but I'm thinking
Midge would make for a better choice. And how durable are those Lierra
tires? I've not had great luck with the Grand Bois.

Btw.. Here's the trail we're investigating for our ride:

[RBW] Re: Project - Trail Bike

2014-02-03 Thread Lesli Larson
Thanks so much for the trail bike suggestions to date. I'd love to invest
in the Atlantis or Bombadil and that may be the down the line plan. On
that front, in the smaller size range, is there really much of a difference
between those two models for trail use? I'm well equipped in the areas of
rando/go fast so I'm looking for something stout and beautiful.

I don't have room in my life for too many bikes so I'd like to look for
something interesting from the past as a trial bike. Love the idea of
maybe a vintage Trek. I do prefer a rigid front fork and of course
something lugged and steel. In the end, I'd rather have something vintage
than a new, non Riv bike by Surly.

Good point about the long top tube. I think those Trek Singletreks look
terrific.

Love this list for make/models to cruise via craigslist. I'm hoping that 48
cm vintage frames are not too scarce.

[RBW] Bike Boxes for Travel

2013-01-07 Thread Lesli Larson
I'm in the market for a new or used hard shelled bike case for
international travel. I have a smallish, honjo fendered bike that is a
little tricky to box up. Rack and rear fenders need to stay on. I've had
some luck with a Trico box... but I'm also looking at the Thule and/or
maybe one of the soft sided cases.

Let me know if you have any recommendations and/or are looking to sell a
neglected box stowed away in your basement, etc.

For any air travel, the weight of the case becomes an issue. In general,
airlines charge a premium over 50 lbs, in addition to the charge for
shipping a bike. A hard shell case is in the 30 lb range. There are
several cardboard ones in the 20 lb or less range. When I shipped my
Atlantis to Europe, I wound up stripping off the racks and carrying some
parts (pedals, cassette, ??) in luggage to get under the 50 lbs limit with
 my hardshell case.

If you are considering a specific airline, check their regulations. Some
of the European carriers will accept a bike as roll on with no boxing
req'd. Other airlines require boxing. There is no standard. The cost
even with the same airline can vary considerably, i.e., free on one leg
 US$300 on the return.
