Re: [RBW] Any former paper boys (or girls) on this list?

2021-09-06 Thread Lucky Turnip
I can't speak to the topic of paper boys, specifically, as ours have also
been folks in cars, but the delivery-related thing I am starting to see in
my neighborhood is Door Dash, Amazon, and other delivery folks on bicycles.
I notice these people because they are not "bike messenger types" on
fixies, they're typically people of all ages and body types riding regular
mass produced mountain bike type things. The last guy I saw was wearing a
construction hard hat in lieu of a helmet. He did have a good assortment of
lights on his rig, an unremarkable modern Schwinn.

2021-05-16 Thread Lucky Turnip
Thanks for your reply. The scenery there is gorgeous (bikes included!)
I guess what I am wondering is if there are any favorite trails people have
to recommend in that area, we can put the bikes on the car to get there if
necessary (sometimes the only way to get to the ride with young kids.)
Can be mildly technical MTB or paved or gravel, our bikes do it all. :)

Yes, I am familiar with Makeshifter, they make nice bags. They're not
making custom bags as they are very busy making and delivering the stock
bags they currently make and sell. I'm familiar with the bags sold by
Simworks, and Golden Pliers and similar bike shops (all the Riv dealers).
I'm really looking for a hobby crafter person like Greg, who maybe does
this on the side, or is just starting out, or is trying to get their

Hey all,

I found a guy who makes handlebar snack bags (amongst many other bike bags)
and I love the ones I got from him very much (he is @greg.newland on
Instagram) but he's currently not taking custom orders.

I know there are a lot of commercially made bags online but I'm looking for
something interesting and fun, crazy fabrics and so on that I can't seem to
find "off the shelf".

Anyone want to recommend an individual who is taking commissions right now
or who maybe isn't one of the big name places that I've already seen?

By "snack bag" I mean those tube shaped stem bags that can hold a large
bottle or a mess of snacks, or whatever, typically with a drawstring.

Again, looking for individuals here more than companies (Chrome, etc)

[RBW] Re: ISO: 1" quill stem with removable faceplate 110mm

2020-12-06 Thread Lucky
I'd like a slight rise or at least no drop. I have a couple different bars
I want to try and one of them is the VO Klunker, thus the faceplate stem
request. Yes, 25.4 clamp, thanks for asking.
I'm aware that the older Salsa stems don't have a very long quill. I'm not
looking for a dirt drop stem. I recall there was a recall, yes. It doesn't
have to be a Salsa, I just put that out there as an example.
I know quite a few folks on here have a parts box they're sometimes looking
to thin out. I have a couple of Technomic stems, for example, that I
probably should get rid of, but I wouldn't think of them unless someone was
looking for one. So I figured I'd ask before going the usual C-list, Eboy,
or retail route.
So, if anyone out there has a longish 1" quill stem for sale, email please.

[RBW] a few parts for sale in Sacramento

2020-11-23 Thread Lucky
I'm trying to piecemeal the funds for a bucket list bicycle that's come
available. Have for sale in Sacramento the following:

Velo Orange Porteur rack, barely used: $125
Nitto Mustache Bar, wear from tape and use, structurally fine: $20
Vintage Sakae MTE-100 seatpost, 25.4: $40

Items are on "the list" locally or I can send pics directly since I don't
have an online photo account. Send me an email if interested. Prefer local
pickup or you pay shipping (which is probably not worth it).

[RBW] Re: Platform bike racks, again

2020-09-12 Thread Lucky
So far my number one choice is the 1UP. it looks like it grabs the front
wheel forward enough to not hit my front racks. The biggest front rack I
have is the Pelago rack. It's quite expensive but looks like a lifetime
piece of kit. Also seems to be sturdy enough to carry four heavier bikes,
that's my only concern on a rack like the Swagman, for example that has the
racheting hook that grabs the top tube, is that it can't hold the weight of
four heavy bikes. My 12 year old is riding a 22" mountain bike frame
already, so large bike are many years in my future.

I thought the North Shore looked cool but I don't think the "hooks around
the headtube" method will work with my basketed bikes.

That said, I'm interested in hearing others' experience.

[RBW] Platform bike racks, again

2020-09-12 Thread Lucky
I've read a few of the conversations about best platform rack for hitch,
but to be honest, my head is spinning! Just when I think I have narrowed
down what to get, I run into another issue with the rack for one reason or
another.

SO, who is using *which* platform rear rack for bikes with front racks and
baskets? I was just about to buy the Thule rack and then it occurred to me
that the hook over the wheel might not work with my bikes, all but my son's
have a front rack and basket.

The One Up looks nice?

I need to carry four bikes on the back as I can no longer lift them to the
rooftop. And don't want to scratch up my nice Riv and Riv-adjacents.

Thanks for any advice!

[RBW] Needing front rack advice

2020-07-25 Thread Lucky
I just put a Pelago front rack on my older Stumpjumper and I’m very impressed.
I wasn’t familiar with the brand beforehand. It has three options for “feet” at
the bottom which solved my issue of only having rear braze ons, and several
options for the top allowing you to fiddle with height and levelness of the
rack. Bonus for me was it also came in black. The hardware and rack look very
quality.

[RBW] FS: 19.5” Specialized Rock Combo (Nor-Cal)

2020-07-06 Thread Lucky
The facts: I bought this bike on impulse because I’ve wanted one for years and
the opportunity presented itself. Right from the start I was hesitant about the
narrow stock bar and tried a few different ones, but it’s made for the
Specialized BB-1 that’s on it, so it’s all back together again.

When I got it, it was in rough mechanical condition beyond my abilities and I
sent it to a pro-mechanic for an overhaul. It got all new cables and housing
and fully tuned and lubed, wheels trued, all bearings repacked. I’ve since
ridden the bike in different terrain and unfortunately it’s not for me, so I’m
looking to sell.

Stats:
19.5” RockCombo
Cosmetically clean but not perfect. Some scrapes and peely decals, but they’re
mostly all there, with shiny white pearl paint and no rust.
Suntour XCD derailleurs and barcons
Specialized flag cranks
Black Dia-comp cantis
Specialized GX-23 rims
Soft and fresh Smoke and Dart skinwall tires
New donut bar tape

Will come without a seat or pedals.

Asking $950. If you want it shipped you can pick a bike shop and pay packing +
actual shipping because I don’t want to take a chance damaging it.

I have a lot of pics which for the life of me I cannot figure out how to post
here. I’d appreciate any help with that I can get?

[RBW] Dirt droppish questions for smallish impulse buy

2020-06-16 Thread Lucky
Yes! Pics are coming! I had to drop the bike at a repair shop friend because I
didn’t have the tool to service the bottom bracket. But prior to this I rode it
in stock configuration and I don’t actually think it’s too small. I think I had
to adjust to its design. I think the stem is high enough but the reach is a bit
long. And the drops are too deep. But once I have it back I will take pics.

I just want to hear about different types of dirt drop-pish bars. Maybe a bit
more shallow?

[RBW] Re: Dirt droppish questions for smallish impulse buy

2020-06-13 Thread Lucky
Well, while I can (likely) do this (pending checking out the process to put
pics here) I can also say that the bikes that fit me are nothing like this
bike in geometry/layout...so that's possibly unhelpful?

This is a 19" RockCombo, and I ride an 18" MB-1 and a 53cm Atlantis. My
MB-1 is set up with Titec riser bars and the Atlantis with Albatross bars
and an 80mm dirtdrop stem.

But, if you want to look at bike pics, I can do that. Thanks!

[RBW] Dirt droppish questions for smallish impulse buy

2020-06-13 Thread Lucky
Greetings all, allow me to introduce myself as I never really have, but now I
need advice and figure I’m more likely to get it with a proper hallo first.
I got into Bridgestones in my teens (late 80’s early 90’s) and eventually
Rivendell, as is often the way. I like steel bikes of this aesthetic and
currently in the garage have an early Atlantis, my college race bike MB-1,
Bianchi San Jose with a porteur bar, and so on. I like sitting up now due to a
variety of injuries I have incurred over the years.
So today I did that thing we all do occasionally, which was purchase a bike
I’ve coveted for years: a nearly all original Specialized RockCombo, knowing it
wouldn’t fit right. Now. I know that I’m between sizes in RockCombos, and also
that they’re pretty scarce, so I bought this one which is just a hair small.
But...not really, with the stock bar. But I dislike this bar.

Finally! The point of my rambling. Since I brought the bike home I have tried
the following bars with stock stem, in lieu of the too narrow stock Specialized
BB dirt drop: MTB riser, Northroad, Mustache, VO Porteur...none of these are
right. The bike was made for a dirt drop and I want to sit up so...what are my
options? (Besides selling, smarty pants)
Another consideration is the stem is 80mm so I could grab some length that way.
Anyhow, thoughts on various bars please?

Appreciate any input.

[RBW] How & when & why did you find Rivendell? What was your first bike or part from them?

2020-01-22 Thread Lucky
A bike geek since I was 11 or so, I discovered Bridgestone in 1991 when I went
shopping for a mountain bike to take to college. Couldn’t swing the MB-1 I
wanted so I bought a General Pro Shadow.
In the late ‘90’s I attended Interbike for work and bought an Atlantis. (Still
have, many miles and incarnations later) Currently sporting an Albatross bar
because I am older.
In between I was a BOBlist member and have had a variety of BOBish bikes pass
through my hands. By the way I did eventually get that MB-1.
Passing on the Riv/BOB inspired madness to my kid, we’ve built him a
lovely’90’s Rockhopper all-rounder.

Not looking for trades. Located in Sacramento, Orange Cheviot, just tuned
