Re: [RBW] Re: Mixte frame design question
I will say, as the owner of a double tube mixte custom from Royal H (the lovelybike frame that was stolen but I got back!). The bike is unusually flexible at high speeds going downhill. There is quite a bit of flex in the frame generally. I will test it out with lowered panniers in the next month and let me know of the results. My frame is simply pristine -- but I had always been a roadie -- so for me the difference was significant. I think that makes the mixte frame not the best choice for rando events or touring -- it does make a good commuter and is good for long rides though. My thoughts. A lot of those double tubes are very flexible though and not in the planing sort of way. Riv (and others) single tube down tends to make a stronger bike. Of the great constructeurs, I've only seen the term mixte used in the Goéland catalogue. Most speak of vélo dame or similar terms. Regarding the frame design, the twin-diagonal-tubed mixte was invented by A. Sixt in the 1930s, as a more triangulated design that was intended to make the frame stiffer than the traditional women's frames with a deeply dropped or even curved diagonal tube. He also used twin diagonal tubes to stiffen tandem frames. Around 1938, the great constructeur Reyhand developed a more sophisticated frame design, with a dropped single top tube and two extra seatstays. In profile, it looks similar to the twin-diagonal-tubed frame. To stiffen the connection at the center of the frame, the extra stays extend beyond the seat tube and attach to the diagonal tube as well. André Reiss, the maker of Reynand, patented this design, as well as a tandem frame with two sets of diagonal reinforcement stays (one set from the head tube to the rear BB, the other from the front seat lug to the rear dropouts). After Reiss died in World War II, the designs were widely copied. You can see examples of these designs in the Bicycle Quarterly Image Archive at http://www.bikequarterly.com/color_photo_supplement.html The twin-diagonal-tubed mixte was much easier to make, and thus remained popular among mass producers. I don't think Sheldon Brown was even aware of the second Reyhand type when he coined his definition of mixte, but he was thinking of women's frames with either a dropped top tube with no extra rear stays (which puts bending loads on the seat tube and thus offends engineers) or the twin-diagonal-tubed mixte. More recently, Rivendell inspired its mixtes on the Reyhand type, but without extending the extra stays beyond the seat tube. Re: [RBW] Stolen Royal H Mixte Ventura
All, Thanks for your comments - thanks for the thoughts - - I'm on a road trip to Seattle for work/fun. Taking my bromptom. I must agree with all commenters -- the correct thing to do would have call the Police -- which I did do -- three times. I also asked them to send a parol car. I've never heard from them yet -- even my case officer. The second owner cannot own title to the stolen bike. I know this but was prompted by my SO to get the bike back. I wouldn't recommend meeting with third parties to others. She saw my offer on craigslist for reward after buying it at a good price at the swap meet from a sketch fellow. Also, wheels and seat couldn't be removed -- I have unusual metric bolt on them. and the seat post/stem is a little damaged from the thieves trying to pry it off. That maybe why it came back plus I have had serious talks (no kidding) with the pawn shops in the area and the law of bailment and licensure. I also know the local bike shops pretty well. Agree whole-heartedly with the idea of community support. When I see a stolen bike in the area -- especially Rivs -- it kills me. Another note is my insurance company still wishes to pay the claim if I donate the bike -- they are worried about liability and frame damage. Trying to decide. It's a good place to be. Thanks for all the commenters. If you are down in Ventura give me an email. I'd love to meet up and ride. I missed the Ocean Air Cycles ride a few months back. I'm on my way to Portland today. Re: [RBW] Re: Homemade Accessories for Bikes
I too tried making a bag . . . I discuss it on my blog - I don't have a Riv Bike (but do have a handmade mixte frame). . . . Here is the link . . http://pammieandtheps.blogspot.com/2012/10/attempt-at-bike-saddlebag.html By they way, I've since changed to bar end shifters and a different brake handlebar set (guidonnet). . . Bags are much harder than they look, by the way:) On Nov 27, 2012, at 11:57 PM, Andy Smitty Schmidt wrote: The little basket-mounted pouches are a cool idea. I've been thinking of making the same sort of thing but a little larger for the box on my Bakfiets. It's funny... the Bakfiets has got a cargo box big enough for an adult or 4 small children to ride in but I'm often at a loss for a good place to put small items like a camera or sunglasses. As far as stuff that's actually gone beyond an idea... The kid seat comes and goes but the leather mud flap is always on my Homer. The wife has an almost matching kid seat and mud flap on her Betty Foy I replaced the snaps on my Slickersack with turn buttons so it'd be easier to go on/off with stuff in the bag. This little deal gets the light out in front of my basket 'cause the beam from the handlebar mounted light was obscured when I had stuff in the basket I think my coolest homemade bike accessory is the double kid seat for my Big Dummy. I love my Homer and have great adventures on my Riv, but the good (and bad) times I have sharing the bike with my kids are the stuff I'll smile about on my deathbed. --Andy On Thursday, November 22, 2012 11:05:20 AM UTC-8, Tony Lockhart wrote: Hello all and Happy Thanksgiving! I just wanted to see if anyone else in the Riv community enjoys making accessories for their bikes. If this is the case, I'd love to see what innovative things you've made. In the meantime, I'll post some images of things that I've made. During the past 2 years, I have been trying to perfect the rando bag but ultimately have been displeased with its lack of sturdiness. I enjoy making them, using them for a while, then gifting them to other cycling friends--this is great because it constantly gives me the opportunity to make new bags. While rando bags look great, I have yet to make one as versatile as a Wald basket. And after many years of debate, I have decided to stick with my Wald. With that in mind, I missed the tool pockets typically found at the back of a rando bag. So, I recently decided to create a couple of pouches to hang on the back side of my basket. Both pouches are 2 inches deep, 4 inches wide, and 5 inches high. There is also an extra 3 inches of flap available if I try to over- stuff the pouches. It was relatively easy to construct these little bags because canvas is such a forgiving material to work with. I have plastic stiffeners inside the bags (very similar to the ones in Acorn bags) and velcro attachments to keep everything in place. While these dimensions may seem small, I have all of my tools in the left pouch (inner tube, patch kit, multi tool, a pair of CO2 cartridges, 3 tire levers, zip ties, and 4 Irish straps). The pouch on the right is used to keep my cell phone, garage clicker, and keys; there is quite a bit of space left for snacks, a saddle cover, and a bandana. I'd love to see the folks at Riv create some Sackville versions of these because they're extremely versatile. Have a look--I am attaching JPEG images to this post. Also, I'd love to see any other accessories people make for their bikes. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Group response - Stolen Rivendell Posted on Ebay
What a great group - Good luck getting the bike back!! I wouldn't want to own a bike with that history, for one. Bad karma. My other thought is that if the seller is an actual business - you could bring a suit for conversion or other torts. . . BTW, I'm still looking for Manny's bike to show up here in Ventura and/ or Los Angeles. . . .I know he's North but you never know . . . All my family's early bikes (1978 Raleigh, 1980 Mongoose, 1987 Raleigh, and 1988 Ross) were lost due to theft. . .so I'm sensitive to this topic. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: How long did your Brooks saddle take to break in?
I bought a Brooks B17 (regular not women's) with titanium rails from a few years ago. Whew! I biked about 200 miles - still a rock. Before moving it to my Brompton - I soaked it in Lexol (per Sheldon Brown) knowing that I may destroy the longevity of the saddle - butter, pure button. It's since been absolutely no problems - when I loaned my bike to someone else - they still think it's a rock. But to me - butter. Interested in getting a women's version or maybe a B67 at some point too. On Mar 25, 2012, at 9:56 AM, charlie wrote: I had a Champion Flyer that broke in on a 50 mile ride. I think the new high mileage B17's with the undyed leather are better especially if you are over about 180 pounds. I don't remember ever breaking in my old B17 when I weighed 170 lbs., 30 years ago. My Selle Anatomicas are basically break in free, although they do feel better after about 50 - 100 miles. Btw, the Road Std is a wonderful bike. They come up for sale from time to time and aren't super pricey. I guess they're not especially rare. Worth a look at. Kind of a racy Waterford front end mated to a relaxed seat tube and long chain stay Riv rear section. Reynolds 753 frame and 531 fork. It's a sweet ride. I too ordered the book on Kindle - although admittedly I'm just a lurker (I don't own a Riv - 7 other bikes though). . . I want a Riv Betty Foy (one of the new frames). . .but just bought a Brompton (dare I say it - I travel 19 weeks a year) and am in a bike buying freeze right now.
