Modifications are as follows: Cantilever posts were removed, area of post was 
painted to match, see image.  When closely examined in the sun, one can see the 
variation of paint texture, but the color match is very close and the change is 
not easily noticed.

Although the frame was made to run 27 wheels, it works really nicely with 700c 
and would be a great candidate for 650b.  The fork offset is 60cm.  So with 
33mm tires, 700c wheels provide 50mm trail.  650b wheels would provide 44mm 
trail.

The trail is great for front loads.  In the images, you will see the front load 
setup that I ran (nitto Marks Rack with Wald Basket).  This was a great 
commute/around town configuration.

The frame is a nice touring/shopping frame.  The flexibility is medium.  For a 
rider of my weight, 175lbs, the flex of this frame is a nice compromise between 
the newer larger diameter steel frames (I have the Hilborne), and the thin 
walled Renolds frames from the 80's.  When loaded, it feels really nice.

 Figure one of y'all has some of these floating around. I'm looking for a
pair of 22.2mm paul thumbies and either a set of shimano 9sp bar end
shifters or just the right one. I have an 8sp I don't have a use for
anymore - so if that would work for you - I'd be happy to trade.

 I would love to meet up - but I don't live in Madison. My Little brother
lives up there and me and the SO have talked about moving up there. We like
the feel and the bike-ness of it. Not sure we can leave Durham, NC, though.
It's a good problem to have, to love too many places. :)

And onto the subject - yes - I would love to be in a swank jenifer st
retreat, too.

I would not recommend yellow jersey. They have a large collection of
interesting parts but I have never had as rude a treatment in any store as

I agree with your points on lighter or thinner tubing, Jim, One thing I
have considered, thought, is sending off the romulus and getting a new fork
made for it in what would be a decidedly high rake (low trail) bike.
Like Rene has done on this list.

I think that would be a better test to see if I'm happier with it or not -
independent of tubing and other choices.

That's why when I saw this post from soma I was fairly excited

They will likely only make them for 1-1/8 threadless but I'd think about
picking up a cross check or a pacer or a double cross to try that out.

Having said that whenever I ride the hilsen or the romulus I'm reminded
that it is really super pleasant to ride the way it is and leaving it alone
doesn't cost anything, then I think about other things and then I notice a
coffee shop and my mind slips to other things altogether.

 Junzo feels the time is right to re-enter the bicycle component
 business.  As he puts it “the market is too race-centric;  carbon fiber,
 electric shifting, full suspension, 11 speed, doesn’t really enhance the
 enjoyment of cycling.  In the 1970’s and 80’s we cycled to be closer to
 nature, for the environment, for our health, for the simple beauty of
 cycling.”  For these reasons SunXCD will focus on touring and randonneuring
 components which were the focus of SunTour during its heyday.

 Of course, most of us Riv fans will note that this echoes Grant's
 published opinions over the years, as well as the sales pitches of a few
 brands who've tried, with varying success, to get into the Riv-ish segment
 of the market. I discovered Riv almost 10 years ago because I wanted a
 certain type of bike that didn't seem to exist at local shops. What I
 wanted was a touring bike, and the Atlantis I bought filled that desire.
 Had I been able to find a Trek 520 locally, or if the LHT existed back
 then, my story may have taken some different turns. But it was certainly
 true back then that any readily available higher quality bike was going to
 be some kind of impractical skinny tire road bike. Not my style.

 But things have changed drastically. Sure, many of us are baffled by
 electronic shifting and seemingly delicate CF and 11-sp cassettes that have
 become available. But at the same time, a HUGE variety of touring and
 adventure bikes, parts, and accessories have become not only available,
 but mainstream. So while I wish Junzo and SunTour success, I thought his
 rationale seemed hollow, or at least 5-10 years too late.

 a single click, my email will pop up.

 Now if you are on an iOS device like an iPhone or iPad, there may be
 some functionality issues. I'm pretty sure these nifty features are more
 flash-based than html5, so if you are stabbing your finger at the screen
 and nothing is happening, there's little I can do directly.

If you do a single coat it is crusty and flakes
If you do multiple coats (3+) it is hard and smooth but cushy. You'd have
to do some odd things to make it flake off then.

You can remove it like any other tape - but you can't really reuse it (like
most tape, shellaced or not)

I will say that I contemplated the wall/table-mount park clamp. I
eventually settled on just using the one I had b/c I wanted to move the
stand around to make it useful for hoisting up the tandems.

I've honestly considered doing a stand like Ezra Caldwell (Fastboy cycles')

it's absolutely GENIUS imo. Heavy enough to counterbalance a bike, easy

I'd seen the sugino one, of course - but I was never clear if I liked it or
not.

I took your advice and dremeled  down an older big ring. That took some
effort and it looks 'pretty good' but not great. I may try again. a friend
of mine has a bunch of old 110bcd large rings that are all shark-toothed
out. :)

I think the chain guard looks pretty good and it sure feels good.


I may have to shorten the chain up a little bit since I don't need it to

[RBW] flat bars on the hilsen

I've been toying with differentiating the hilsen and the romulus some more
and I decided I would try some radically different bars. I had a pair of
these inexpensive arc bars on a tandem and I really liked the position I
ended up in. So I thought I'd try it out on the hilsen.

I think the stem reach might be a bit too long and maybe a touch higher
than I want but the position doesn't feel too bad.

Having looked for a long time at R+E tandems I have to ask... Why wouldn't
you go with them? The price point they seem to be able to hit for a
semi-custom tandem frame is pretty fantastic. Why not get one and enjoy it?

We have 32mm panaracer's on our burley paso doble. That's a tight fit with
fenders but it is doable. I'd love to move to an R+E with either 650b
wheels or able to comfortably fit a larger 700c.

I have sidepulls on a romulus and paul centerpulls on a AHH. I think I'm
somewhat partial to the centerpulls. They seem to leave a little more space
for fenders, etc -however I've found they are a bit more finicky to setup
than the sidepulls.

Having said that, once you get them setup they feel more powerful to me.

Go with the V-brakes b/c they can be less of an ass pain to setup.

The tektro 520 levers also feel pretty good in my hands. Having said that -
so do the shimano levers.

However, if you really want cantis, spring for the paul cantis - they are
just a nicer brake and less fidgety to setup than the cr720s.

 I think you're committing the fallacy of the golden mean. Absolutism has a
place in our society. Let me give you some examples:

I absolutely believe that all adult americans should have the ability to
gain the tax and probate advantages they can get through marriage
regardless of their race, gender, religious beliefs or sexual orientation.

 I believe anyone pushing to withhold those rights from folks in our
society is a bigot and should be shunned.

I absolutely believe that all women should have control over their own
bodies.

I believe anyone advocating for them losing control of their own bodies is
Akin(haha, get it?) to a rapist and should be punished as such.

Those are things I absolutely believe. You let me know when I'm being
irrational, provided you can present logic as such.

I would have agreed with you. Right up until Citizens United. When
corporations can give unlimited money and behave like people, but not
people - then corps espousing their political beliefs gets my hackles up.
When I see  a company telling me that they don't like my life and that they
are actively working to make my life and many of those people I love
illegal?

That's when I start making sure they don't get any money, From anyone I
know.

It's one thing to say that you think there should be more or less taxes,
it's another to say that my friends cannot be the way they are.

[RBW] non-drop/non-albatross/non-mustache bar'd hilsens

So I've been riding around on a used tandem I got for me and the stoker
quite a bit. It's an older santana and we've converted it over from the
drops to a more upright posture. I put on a pair of incredibly cheap
dimension arc bars ($14) and a set of ergon grips and it is disconcertingly
comfortable. I like the grips, I like the position I end up in on the bars
and I'm thinking I could do this on the hilsen, convert it over to a
1x9 and keep the rom for go-fasty (well, go less slow-y).


So I thought I'd ask here - what other kind of bars should I think about.

I've found it's not about shipping costs it's about shipping
pain-in-the-assness. If I ship something in the US I don't have disclose
what is in it or worry about customs or anything. If I do the same to
overseas I do. Having shipped something to korea once and had to go through
a million questions and even THEN have to play whack-a-mole with customs on
the other end just to get the goods to the recipient I understand why
someone would want to avoid the mess.

It's not about distrust of YOU it's about dealing with irritating officials.

Those are not the same thing.

from a number of people trained or experience in any sufficiently
complicated field.

Sometimes instead of thinking the person did this out of cheapness
some folks think they do it out of stupidity or out of malice.

It's still just as assumptive and incorrect.

I'm glad you loan out your tools, I'm not sure I would be that
generous. Tools and time are not free. I don't expect the wrenches at
the shops near me to give out advice or instruction for free and
wouldn't ask that of them. I will ask for torque specs if they happen
to know them but only when I purchase something from them. I don't
think that's an unreasonable use of their specific knowledge.

If I want a lesson in how to do something properly then I'm willing to
pay the normal rate for an hour or so of their time. That seems fair
to me.

[RBW] back to the list and biking on vacation

Hi,

 I had turned off the list while I was on vacation but I had a great
time on vacation in japan. Alas I didn't get take any of my bikes with
me but I had an opportunity to ride a couple of rented bikes and an
afternoon bike tour while I was away. There's little riv-relationship
other than fantastic scenery and location but I wanted to share this
with folks who would appreciate it.

I took a bike tour from these folks:

in the gifu prefecture of japan -the town is called hida-furukawa. The
tour ended up going all over the area and took about 4hours. As you
can see from the picture a fairly beautiful location. If anyone
happens to be in the area I'd recommend taking a tour from them. The
tour leader was fantastic and if you're japanese isn't very good,
don't worry, they speak english very well.

We biked up and down the region, refilled our water bottles from the
mouth of a mountain spring and then sat next to a shrine and watched a
storm start to roll into the area. It was kinda great.

if I had one of my own bikes I'm sure it would have been slightly more
comfortable but as it was, it was still pretty great.

Wider variety of handlebar choices? quill stems don't limit you there.

Get one of the nitto or VO threaded-threadless quills and then use
whatever you want.

Then you get selection of handlebars, poptop stems AND you can move up
and down as much as you want.

That's the versatility of threaded, imo. You can't do that with
threadless, you're just stuck.

 The question is around which brakes to use. The long reach side pulls are

I have one of each. The rom has the sidepulls, the ahh has the paul
center pulls and I really rather like them.

They setup pretty easily and they have GREAT stopping power.

Having said that - the sidepulls stop well, too. :)

I don't think you'll have trouble with either.

I disagree. I think of it this way. If I like a poster or a picture or
a painting I want to protect and preserve it. A good frame does that.
It's UV-glass so the picture doesn't fade or yellow. It's a solid
frame with a good backing. Any paper used it in is archive-grade. I've
just made sure that this picture can last and stay with me.

It does cost more money, sure,  but it preserves the VALUE to me.

It is important to be able to judge the VALUE of something versus the COST.

I'm not on an atkins-style diet but I do drink a lot of water on the
advice of a back doctor who said it would help keep my vertebrae from
rubbing as much.

small, the biggest advantage of drinking a lot of water is that it
will force me to get up and down out of my chair in order to go to the
bathroom.

He's definitely right about that.

 Why?  They're an enormous pain in the a$$ with no benefit for users of
 derailleur drive trains, and this bike is coming with a derailleur drive

I've found Kunstler to be retreading the same schtick for the last
7yrs or so. It's not that he's entirely wrong - I just think his
timeline from the long emergency is compressed by a lot. Reading his
work you'd think the collapse of civilization was a movie-plot
duration rather than a more glacial pace. And with the same thing
coming out over and over again it gets a bit repetitive to read.
