Hi all! I'm 5'1.5 and shrinking lol. I ride the current 45 clem and it is a
perfect fit. I could ride the 50 cm platy bc of the low standover but it
did feel like a bit of a stretch, reach-wise. Changing from loscos to
boscos (thanks to Leah!) helped it feel more comfortable -- and perhaps if
I had tried a shorter stem (?), that would have helped even more. Alas I
decided to sell the platy after I felt the perfect fit of the 45 clem.

something like the Velocity Atlas/Cliffhanger + Shimano Deore hub sets
that's currently sold out on Riv, but I'm open to others. Try me!

Richard - I have a feeling that even if I were to try the more traditional
triangle frames, I'll come right back to my Clem. It's just hard not to
want to try all the Rivendell flavors!

Joe - my dream is to one day make pilgrimage to Walnut Creek -- alas I am
in the Boston area with two small kids, so a trip out there is probably a
ways out for me. Great to hear that both you and your wife love the Sam.

Sean - I commiserate with your wife and hope that she can find her dream
bike that's also a perfect fit!

Elisabeth - thank you so much for the feedback on the Sam sizing - it's so
helpful. I'll keep my eyes peeled for earlier saluki/homer/atlantis. I have
short arms too!

Collin - your wife looks great on her Homer!

Anyone looking to unload a small, road-ish Rivendell frame? Though my heart
belongs to mixtes (my sole bike is the Clem after selling my Platy), I
can't seem to get the idea of trying out a more classic, triangle frame out
of my mind! At 5'1.5 tall with a pbh of ~76, I am not even sure that a bike

felt a little bit large), but wanted to put this out into the universe. On
the other hand my 45cm Clem feels like it was made for me, size-wise.

leg strength so hopefully those hills won't feel as daunting, no matter the

Re: [RBW] Re: Clem wheel woes: To rebuild or not to build...

2022-03-21 Thread Sofie C
Wow, thank you Joe, Joe B, Collin, Patrick, and Richard for such helpful
responses.

Joe: Touche! I've also thought about spending more of my energy on
strengthening my legs - maybe then the hills won't feel so cumbersome!

Joe B: That's an interesting option 4! Good point about the weight of the
dyno hub being substantial.

Collin: It's funny you mention your partner's AHH... I have no faith in my
ability to learn wheel building at this point in my life, but I did nearly
use this conundrum to rationalize acquiring a Rivendell frame for my
husband to make use of the current wheels. Did you end up keeping a dynamo
hub on the front wheel of your clem?

Patrick: I've considered trying some new tires, and have been eyeing some
from RH. I currently have Schwalbe G-One Evolution tires, and they're 57mm,
so perhaps I should try some lighter tires. I love the cush of the G-Ones,
but they are probably more robust than I need.

Richard: It's nice to hear I'm not alone in practicing "mental gymnastics"
around my Clem! I will check out the Quills too, though they are likely out
of my budget... I was thinking about an option like Cliffhanger rims with a
decent, non-dyno hub and lighter tires, which would set me back by more
like $600...

Does anyone keep more than one set of wheels for one bike or is that
utterly ridiculous?

[RBW] Clem wheel woes: To rebuild or not to build...

2022-03-21 Thread Sofie C
Help! I'm stuck in analysis paralysis... I have a size 45 Clem complete
that I adore, purchased in the last Riv lottery. I wanted dynamo lighting
so I had my local bike shop rebuild the stock front wheel with a SON hub.
My clem feels quick enough for me - I'm a slow rider, and the weight
doesn't bother me, except for when I'm riding uphill, and there are a lot
of hills where I live. Still, I have wheel fomo, and I can't stop thinking
about how good the Clem could be if I were to put on different wheels than
the stock wheels.

I'm considering a bunch of options, with the top ones being:

1. Get a set of new, relatively lightweight wheels without Dyno for daytime
riding (which is what I mostly do anyway). Keep Clem stock wheels for when
I really need the Dyno. I'd have two sets of wheels.

2. Get new rims (Velocity Cliffhangers?) and salvage the SON hub - Rich can
use the hub in rebuilding the front wheel. This leaves me with an extra
Clem stock rear wheel.

3. Be happy with what I have.

What would you do?

[RBW] Re: Brooks B67 on a Clem or other upright bike

2022-03-20 Thread Sofie C
I've cycled through a few different saddles but I now prefer my B67s on my
new clem (even over my Berthoud Marie-Blanque saddle and definitely more
than the B17). The cons of the saddle seem to be the weight (those heavy
springs!) -- also at first the leather feels almost plastic-like, as
compared to the smooth leather on the B17. I also think the springiness of
the saddle is perceptible in a good way, which makes up for the weight. The
B67s feels the most hammock-like of any of the ones I've tried. Granted, I
have not taken the Clem or the saddle for any long rides, so I speak from
very limited experience!

You'll probably remember I wrote some time ago asking for ideas on how
to lighten up my Clem. Thanks to the great advice from this group, I
*finally* got some new wheels and tires for Clem and oh, what a
difference! Clem lost two pounds in the process and I got a more agile
bike with tires that will handle the mud and just about any other
 trail/road condition.

I called Rivendell one day and just my luck, Rich happened to answer
the phone. We discussed several possibilities including having him build
the wheels, but then recommended the Velocity-built wheels with Deore
hubs. I ordered the RH Juniper Ridge tires (650x48), endurance casing,
and Schwalbe ultralight tubes. I'm very happy with the set up. Now it's
going to the bike shop for brake adjustment and to check my handiwork on
 the rear derailleur setting.

Some photos from a quick run to the grocery story including a blossom
photo for Leah...spring is coming but it's still chilly around here!

shipping is the same for me if I were to add your Koma light - it would be

On my platypus (soon to be on my Clem), I've tried the B17 regular, B17
special, B67s, and have settled on the speedy but comfier to me Gilles
Berthoud Marie Blanque.

Re: [RBW] Re: A Pumpkin Platypus, Perchance?

2022-01-04 Thread Sofie C
Hello Heather, I just wanted to pop in here quickly to say hello and
welcome! I adore your pumpkin platypus and the accessories you chose --
such wonderful taste! I'm a newbie here as well, having just purchased a
lime 50 cm platypus when it popped up this fall on Riv's garage sale. I had
been an admirer for about a decade and finally decided to take a chance on
a Riv without ever riding one -- and it is just an unbelievably wonderful
bike. This folks on this forum, especially the #rivsisters like Leah and
Roberta, have been so warm, welcoming, and wonderfully supportive. So much
so that I also have a new Clem Smith Jr. getting a dyno hub at my local
bike shop. Hope to see you 'round here, and please share all the pics!

DRW - thank you for the recommendation - those are beautiful, indeed.
Contemplating.

On the Pelago - also checking out that option, thank you for recommending
it! I should have also mentioned that I want to be able to support a Wald
137...

Mike, thank you for sharing the Velo Orange - it's very handsome. Also
contemplating...! I may message you a few questions if you don't mind...

[RBW] Re: WTB: rack for platypus

2021-10-11 Thread Sofie C
(Oops I think I just replied to Leah so trying this again...lol). Doug
thank you for inquiring, and Leah, thank you for looking out for me! This
is the rack that I'm coveting (sold out everywhere):
https://www.rivbike.com/collections/racks/products/a7s5klhjwe-oith-lk5465a

But I'm open to considering other racks that can support a Wald basket.
Right now I have the ocean air cycles erlen bag support for my zeitgeist
bag.

which will be here on Tuesday! I'm especially interested in the Rivendell
nitto rack that's currently out of stock, but I'm open to others. TIA!

2021-10-02 Thread Sofie C
Thank you for the warm welcome here, and very happy to be your #RivSister!
I will happily post photos when my platy arrives! I'm not sure how long the
wait will be -- I am in Massachusetts outside of Boston...I'm willing to
wait... I still can't believe that I was lucky enough to nab this beauty!
