Re: [RBW] Single-Bolt Stem Spreading Options

I’ve had good success using the flat sides of a 6 or 8mm Hex wrench. Gently
rotating, or applying gentle up or down prying type pressure has always
worked well for me.

 Hi Brian,

If your stem has a tapped hole for the clamp bolt (as many steel stems
have, rather than a loose nut like many aluminum Nittos) you can use this
 method:

Helpful tip: Take the pinch bolt out. Insert a coin in the slot between
the clamp area. Thread the bolt in from the back side. Tighten it against
the coin. It will force the clamp open and it will stay that way during
 your install.

(I copied this from the net, rather than type up my own description.)

Edward, thanks you’re absolutely right. I suppose I should just open this
up to 137’s with or without hardware. I know that the hardware is easy to
remove. I was requesting no hardware to potentially save a few $$ on
shipping. I imagine that the basket shipped with struts would require a
larger box, than sans struts.

[RBW] Re: ISO/Recommendation: help me select a 9-speed triple front derailleur

2022-11-09 Thread Todd G
Thanks for the recommendations everyone. I thought about modifying the
fender to get that extra space, but would rather spend money to fix the
problem, hahaha! Joking aside I’d definitely prefer to just run parts that
work well for the job at hand. If that means swapping stuff out, then so be
it.

I’ll definitely look into the derailleurs mentioned above. With that said,
if anyone has a derailleur laying around let me know. I wouldn’t have a
strong preference to one over the next, however if one pops up that’s clamp
on vs. a braze on, I’d prefer to go that route, but not a deal breaker if I
need to get an adapter.

@ Kai, based on those photos you’d be absolutely right, but there’s about
5-6mm of space between the chainring and the chainstay. It’s just the angle
of the photo that makes it look like it hates the chainstay!

@ Peter, if nothing pops up here I’ll give you a ring!

Also, sorry for the long winded post above. I wanted to provide info in
hopes that maybe this can help someone with a similar issue down the line.

[RBW] Re: ISO/Recommendation: help me select a 9-speed triple front derailleur

2022-11-08 Thread Todd G
Continuation from above...

With that said, can anyone recommend a nice 9-speed triple front derailleur
that doesn’t require as much space for the arm to actuate? I think that if
I were to replace the derailleur with a derailleur that doesn’t require as
much real estate, this would possibly solve all issues. Then I could run a
smaller spacer at the chain stay bridge and get much better clearance
between the bolt and rear tire.

Thanks for reading this far! Hope that made sense to someone other than
myself.

[RBW] ISO/Recommendation: help me select a 9-speed triple front derailleur

2022-11-08 Thread Todd G
I’m looking for a recommendation for a clamp on 9-speed triple front
derailleur for a Toyo built Atlantis. I’m currently running an old 9-speed
LX front derailleur that shifts beautifully. I recently purchased some VO
fenders and got them installed pretty easily. The only issue that I’m
having is that while shifting, the long/tall arm of the front derailleur
wants to move into the front fender as I shift into the small ring.

To help remedy the situation, I swapped out the stock derailleur cable
clamp bolt and washer for low profile Panhead screw, which got me a little
real estate (image #1). In conjunction with the clamp bolt, I shimmed out
the bottom of the fender at the chain stay bridge with an 11mm alloy spacer
and a leather washer on either side to help push it away from the
derailleur arm (image #3). This set up works in the stand, and the fender
line is pretty good. With that said, my main concern at this point is that
I’ve now pushed the bottom of the fender closer to the rear wheel. At the
chain stay bridge, I used a stainless M5 bolt, but want to replace this
with a low profile Panhead bolt as well, as there isn’t much space between
the bolt head and the tire. “Not much space” translates to about 3-4mm or
so, which it too close for my taste. So, if I were to install a Panhead
bolt at the chain stay bridge I could probably call it good. So yeah, this
setup will work as is, but I feel like I can get the rear set up pretty
close to perfect if I were to just swap out the derailleur.

[RBW] WTT: My Paul Components 22.2 Funky Monkey for your 1" Funky Monkey

2022-10-30 Thread Todd G
So, for some reason I ordered a 22.2 Paul Components Funky Monkey in
silver, when I should have ordered the 1" version.

Instead of returning it, does anybody have a front 1" in silver to trade?
The one I have for trade/sale was mounted on a quill stem and removed
almost immediately, and didn’t even run a cable through it. I could also
sell it if anyone is looking to purchase one in the near future.

Please reach out offline to arrange trade or sale.

Thanks!

Also open to a 90mm Pearl. I don’t necessarily need the longer quill of the
Technomics, so If you have a Pearl that would work out just fine.

 Hi all,

I have an orange Sam Hillborne frame/fork/headset for sale. This is a
 57cm from 2009 requiring a 27.2 seat post.

Overall the bike is in great shape. No rust, dents, dings or anything
of the sort. Usual wear associated with a bike that gets ridden, but
nothing specific to speak of. Pretty nice clearances for larger tires on
this model. 90% of the time I’ve owned the bike I ran Compass Snoqualmie
Pass tires under SKS P50 fenders.

I have a 91.5 PBH and the saddle height in the photos is 79.5. The bike
is still built up, so I provided a few pics of various set-ups over the
years. If you’d like to see a closeup of something specific, just reach
 out
off list and I’ll provide as many photos as you need.

I’d like to avoid shipping if possible, and would like to try for a
local(ish) sale in Sacramento, CA. But, if we have to ship, we can work
 that out.

Asking $1100 + shipping via Paypal (buyer covers any PP fees please)

 Thanks!

Thanks, Dustin!

It was already on the bike when I received it a few years back. It’s made
of thick leather and I believe it to be from Velo Orange. I could be wrong

The search is still on for a few items.

- Nitto /Rivendell Albatross bars, heat treated are strongly preferred
- Nitto Technonomic quill stem, 120mm (planning on pairing these with the
Albatross bars)
- Paul Thumbies, silver, 22.2

Thanks!

I also have a Hillborne where the first few characters are M905. By no
means am I a Riv historian, but based on what I’ve heard, these partial
serials align with what I’ve learned of their dating practices.

 Morning Bill,

And happy spring. Life's been busy these days so the final push to
build was constantly delayed, once I peeled some time off it went pretty
quick. I spent some time prepping the frame previously with frame saver
 and
helicopter tape in the vulnerable areas since it will see dirt and rocks.

Regarding tire size, it is maxed out. Especially in the rear and
particularly because of the motolites, they're a great brake but the
 noodle
and straddle cable sit pretty low. The tires are 650b x2.2.

I appreciate the praise, orange, purple and green are favorites colors
of mine and yeah it does work. I have only ridden it 9 miles on a MUP
 But
it is very fun to ride. Maybe because of the tire choice but it rides
completely different from my road Atlantis.

 Cheers!

 Hugh

Well this shouldn’t last long! As a another owner of a Bantam, and having

[RBW] WTB: Nitto S83 in black

2021-10-12 Thread Todd G
Hi all, I’m looking for a Nitto S83 in black, 27.2, 300mm in VGC. I only
have interest in the black version of this post. I’m not sure if these were
produced in 250mm and 300mm, or just one of the two lengths. It’s probably
a long shot as I believe these were a pretty limited run, but I figured
it’s worth a shot.

Feel free to message me offline, or reply to this thread.

Thanks!

-Todd

Re: [RBW] B Secula Plus mounting bolt too long!

2021-09-11 Thread Todd G
Hi Thomas, thanks for the info. That is exactly what I did. I had to go get
a new cutting wheel for my Dremel, but it worked out just fine. I kept the
light on the fender, left the nut on the bolt and then cut off around 5mm.
I cleaned up the trimmed end, loosened the nut all the way to help clean up
the threads and then tightened it back down. Good as new!

On a side note, I wonder why they don’t just make it so that the lens is
still secure, but removable. This would allow access to either remove the
bolt and replace it with a shorter one, or at least just make it so that
it’s easier to trim down if necessary. Not a deal breaker, but would be
nice.

[RBW] B Secula Plus mounting bolt too long!

2021-09-11 Thread Todd G

Hello all, I recently mounted a Secula Plus taillight to my rear Honjo
fender. It seems the mounting bolt is too long and the tire will rub it
periodically. I am confident that this bolt is the culprit as it is the
longest by far.

I want to trim it down some, but don’t recall if this bolt is removable or
not. I also don’t believe that this lens is removable to get to the bolt.

I would like to trim it down without removing the light, and am thinking of
getting a little cutting wheel for my Dremel and having at it with the
light still attached to the fender. I know I can potentially mess up the
threads, but not really sure about other options.

If someone has nice solution to this other than running a smaller tire I’m
all ears, thanks!

[RBW] Re: Cutting rack stays

2021-01-02 Thread Todd G.
I will usually mark where I want to cut and put them in a vice, gently of
course. When I use a vice, I like to wrap them to avoid damaging the
finish. I only have the portion I want to remove, and then another inch or
so sticking out so that I don’t have too much leverage working against me.
You could also lay them on a workbench, however preventing them from moving
around can be challenging. Grab a hacksaw and make your cut. File (with a
file) or grind (if you have a bench grinder) the ends to smooth out any
burrs and call it done.

Oh yeah, measure twice, cut once.

[RBW] Re: cold weather winter riding tips

2020-11-19 Thread Todd G.
What to wear is very subjective. With that said, when I start out on a
ride, if I feel a chill when I start out I’m generally dressed
appropriately. If I feel cozy and warm right away, I’ve overdressed and am
going to be looking to shed layers in a few minutes. All in all, be chilly
for 10 minutes and most likely you’ll be set.

2020-10-20 Thread Todd G.
Figured I would give this a little bump since Rivendell should be getting
these back in stock toward the end of the month...or so I’m told. If you’re
contemplating a new project and you’re on the one in, one out plan as I am
currently, reach out and lets talk. Thanks!

[RBW] Re: Talk Me Out of Building My Own Wheels

2020-10-19 Thread Todd G.

Absolutely worth the money. You can easily thread the nipple on a few
threads with this thing and pretty much eliminate the chance of having to
fish a nipple out of your rim. Sometimes they come out easy, other times no
so much.

2020-10-19 Thread Todd G.

So I’m probably beating the proverbial “dead horse” here, but I don’t think
there is a more valuable skill for one to have than to have the ability to
build and maintain your own wheels. Once you do it few times, it really
starts to make sense. You will begin to see, understand and recognize all
of the subtle, and not so subtle nuances of the art of wheel building. I
really really enjoy it, and at times it really gets me to an almost
meditative state.

Invest in the tools you will need. Don’t buy cheap tools either. Stick to
Park, EVT (Efficient Velo Tools), Abbey etc, and you will not be sorry.

Enjoy the building process!

Re: [RBW] Re: Any particular grease cleaner you would recommend!

2020-10-10 Thread Todd G.

I’ve been using Dumonde Tech for a number of years and like it. I use it
year round, and it seems to do the job for me. It lasts somewhere around
150 miles or so before I feel the need to wipe the chain down and re-apply
the lube.

Around a year ago, a friend gave me a bottle of Muc Off dry lube. I was a
little skeptical at first because when I was a kid I used White Lightening
dry lube, and it was a hot mess. So taking in to consideration I didn’t
really know what the heck I was doing at that time, I used it. A sit turns
out I really like the stuff, especially in dusty dry conditions. My entire
drivetrain stays pretty clean, however I don’t feel like I get very much
mileage out of a single application. 75 miles or so and I feel like I need
to wipe down the chain and re-apply.

I have some Rock-n-Roll gold that I have had sitting in a cabinet for
somewhere around 10 years or so. I need to finish the bottle off. I have no
idea what it was that I heard, but I heard something about the owner of
Rock-n-Roll that really rubbed me the wrong way. This was at least 10 years
ago. So, now that I can’t recall what it was that I heard, maybe I’ll get a
few rides in with it on a clean chain and report back. FOr whatver it’s
worth, I feel like the Muc Off keeps the drivetrain the cleanest overall.

As far as cleaning, sometimes I use the Sonic Cleaner at work, sometimes I
remove teh chain and put it into a screw top container filled with warm
water and a gentle eco-friendly laundry detergent, and shake, shake, shake,
air dry, or let it bake in the sun until it is completely dry. Those two
are my best and most favorite methods. Between lubes I run the chain
through a shop rag for a minute or so, changing to clean spots on the rag,
then re-apply lube, run t through one more time to remove any excess, and
I’m ready to ride.

That’s my routine for the most part. I don’t really deviate from that, and
I get good mileage out of my drivetrains, so I’m sticking to it!

Re: [RBW] Re: Comparing drop bars to uprights: Path Less Pedaled

2020-10-04 Thread Todd G.
I’ll should be going down this path in the near future. Working on getting
a used, or new one once they land at Rivendell. For drops I’m planning on
running 46cm Noodles, and for more “casual” bars something like an
Albatross. Pretty excited to see how it’s mannerisms change between the two
cockpit setups. Will do my best to offer a review once I get some time on
both.

[RBW] Re: WTB: Sam Hillborne 57/58 cm

2020-10-02 Thread Todd G.
Thank you for the heads up! My only real reason for pause is that I think I
would prefer the cantilever version. Really for no other reason than
affording myself a little more flexibility in tire size. I mentioned in my
original post that I want to run a 38, 42 or up to a 44, maybe a 48c
tire. I’m pretty confident that the 44/48 tire option would be maxing out
any medium reach caliper. I actually meant to include that most of my
interest was in a canti version, but it kind of slipped my mind.

Re: [RBW] Re: Do you leave it alone...or must you monkey?

2020-09-30 Thread Todd G.
I’m always adjusting or swapping stuff on a new bike until I get everything
right where I want it. Sometimes it happens quickly, other times it takes a
month, 2 months etc to get everything dialed in. I suppose it also depends
on how much I’m riding and the particular use for the build on the bike.

Either way, your Atlantis looks amazing!

[RBW] WTB: Sam Hillborne 57/58 cm

2020-09-30 Thread Todd G.

Hi all,

I’ve been lurking around the group for a while and have very much been
enjoying all the great content. I’m working on consolidating my stable a
bit. Too much overlap between bikes, and I also have a custom
Allroad/Randonneur coming sometime around February of 2021. I’m not beyond
waiting for Riv to get the SH back in stock in October, but figured I would
test the waters here prior to see what may be available.

I really like the orange/burnt orange with the cream headtube, the
black/cream, Sage and Porsche green versions. It will probably alternate
between Nitto Albatross bars or Noodles with a front basket, with 38 or
43/44c tires, depending on what type of riding I’m going to be doing.

If you have something that fits the bill, please reach out and lets talk.

Cheers!

Beautiful bike, Paul. Looks very well thought out and I’m sure it rides as
good as it looks. Enjoy!

Pretty sure that is an "M" for Maxway.
I have that same feature on my Maxway single speed frame. I believe
that they made some frames for Rivendell at some point, located in Taiwan.
