I "think" the deal is only for silver in 170 length.
Necessary to enter promo code: *overstockextremept224*

Other deals as well, but I can only see them in my email, not in the

Hi John. That’s what you might call the Proto-Saluki frame for 650b, made
in 2004, I think, by Curt Goodrich. He rode it quite a bit, I believe,
before selling it on another board. From that second owner, another South
Florida list member and I have owned it in turns for several years.
Grant adjusted the geometry for the Saluki a bit, all to the good. IMHO
this bike needs—and deserves—a refresh from Joe Bell. Great color, right?

The bars are Salsa Cowchippers. Can’t say enough about Goodrich frames!

With great apprehension I come to you all with yet another WTB ask,
but this one is so much more.

Back when I was first getting into "real bicycles", it was the
"come up" of fixed gears and track bikes. Some of you know what I'm
 talking
about, it was around 05-06 and videos started to emerge online with
 names
like Mash SF and Macaframa, an NYC based blog called Prolly is not
 Probably
was gaining traction, and in my small, agriculture based hometown
 there
were about 3 of us who discovered these things around the same time.

There was a small bike shop that resided inside an also small,
local sporting goods store and a childhood friend had recently taken a
 job
there learning the ropes in hopes of becoming a skilled mechanic, as
 well
as to receive a discount on parts to fulfill the goal of going from a
 27"
road bike with a JB Welded on track cog and bottom bracket lockring to
 a
 proper fixed gear set up.

This friend helped me along the same pathway, trading up from a
clapped out Fuji Royale conversion, to the next and the next,
 eventually
landing on some pretty neat bikes (for the time), with the "high"
 being a
prototype Bianchi Super Pista. While I was wheeling and dealing (some
things never change, it appears) my friend stuck with this first and
 only
proper fixed gear, a Surly Steamroller. Purchased complete, he
 eventually
worked it over, a new Velocity Deep V wheelset, some wicked narrow
 Nitto
NJS certified track drops, and the likes.

What really enamored me was this beautiful, and I mean gorgeous
Brooks B17 special. It was not just any B17 special, it was the newly
released "British Racing Green" color. That saddle was captivating to
 me,
but at a scant 125lbs I never stood a chance of breaking one in, so I
 stuck
with my Flites and Turbos. For years I watched that saddle age and get
 more
and more beautiful, and the fire inside grew. The way the copper, hand
hammered rivets played off the green dyed leather... it was
 mesmerizing!

What a great write-up and photos, Pam! I'm going to be in Vermont for the
next four months, beginning in mid-August or so, and will take a look at
that route. I agree, as well; those C&L people who were at PBE are very

Re: [RBW] UPS Lost My Roadini

2024-07-09 Thread Tom Goodmann
I imagine there may be many stories among us of shipping mishaps. I have
found the Bike Flights folks quickly responsive. The shippers themselves,
however, do not always seem to take care of what is being shipped. In two
cases in the past year, the box on arrival had clearly been broken open and
re-taped; in one case, a box of parts was missing. Careful packing and
insurance, as always.

Safe riding--and shipping--to all,

 Finally. New. Bike. Day.

This bike was a long time coming. I bought the frame in November
(November!) and have waited this long for the plethora of specialty parts
 to arrive.

Purple is a fun color; it never takes itself too seriously. It goes
with most other colors, which is what led me to choose…all the colors.

The theme for this Platypus is: 80s My Little Pony. I call the bike My
 Little Platy.

The bike is a 50cm Rivendell Platypus with 650b wheels; it can be taken
on Amtrak and bus racks, which is something its 55cm siblings cannot do. I
put fat tires on it so it can handle gravel. My Gravel & Travel Platy.

I adored My Little Pony in my girlhood, and my favorite ponies had
rainbow hair. Why settle for just pink or blue when some ponies had ALL
 the
colors? I started out this build incorporating a color here or there. (I
had my Paul brakes already cerakoted in blues.) But while looking for
grips, I found Ergon oil slick clamps and had my revelation: I wanted oil
slick everywhere I could get it.

Because oil slick has ALL the colors.

All the makers of these parts worked with me to make this bike happen.
They sent their beautiful products to me and let me alter them in wild,
saturated, living color. I don’t know if any of them understood why I was
going all out like this. All of them were men, save one - the anodizer.
 You
can see her work in the levers, chain rings, cranks, and bottom bracket.
 She understood the assignment.

I live with 3 men and none of them give the bike their stamp of
approval. The Lone Wolf will howl, alright. I remain steadfast in my
adoration of this bike because it does something for me. Takes me back to
my simple, happy 80s and 90s childhood. If when you were a little girl
(most of your were not), your friend had a dress-up closet and you could
choose from her lavish collection of finery to wear at playtime, and you
just came out WEARING ALL OF IT, well, that is this Platypus.

Thank you to everyone at Analog Cycles, Paul Components, Ignite
Components, Ashley Anodized It, Velocity USA and Pedal Bicycles for making
this silly concept a real, tangible bicycle. And of course, thank you to
Rivendell Bicycle Works, who makes the best bikes in the world.

[RBW] Price drop: NOS Heron Road, 60cm, $800-->$700

2024-04-20 Thread Tom Goodmann
Never-built 60 cm Heron Road frame and fork only (no headset; no bottom
bracket). Designed by Grant at Rivendell as a collaboration with Rona
Components, then owned by Ted Durant; built at Waterford. This beautiful
blue-green road frame bears serial number B00055, and was built in February
2000 with Reynolds 531 tubing. (For further information, all of the
original Heron web pages are still accessible:
http://www.heronbicycles.com/geometry.html).
Built for then-available short reach brakes, 28mm tires & fenders; 30mm
tires will also fit, depending on actual dimensions and rims. (As Jan Heine
has said, plushness is more significant than width). For wider tires, some
owners have happily converted these to 650b using long reach brakes that
were not available when this was made.
The frame bears only the slightest mark on the inside of one rear
dropout, probably a sign of having been fitted with a wheel at some point;
it is otherwise pristine with all decals and the Heron head badge in
perfect condition. $700, plus shipping and insurance.
I'd really like to move this along and am only selling because I am
moving . . . and a local friend has offered me a custom Riv road frame. So,
n-1; n+1 = 0.

[RBW] FS: NOS Heron Road frame & fork, 60 cm

2024-04-08 Thread Tom Goodmann
(Reposting as potential sale was not completed). I'm downsizing ahead of an
impending move, and selling a never-built 60 cm Heron Road frame and fork
only (no headset; no bottom bracket). As all of you will know, the bike was
designed
by Grant Petersen at Rivendell, and built by Waterford as a collaboration
with Rona Components, then owned by Ted Durant. The beautiful blue-green
road frame bears serial number B00055, and was built in February 2000 with
Reynolds 531 tubing. (For further information, all of the original Heron
web pages may be found on the Internet).
The frame bears only the slightest mark on the inside of one rear
dropout, probably a sign of having been fitted with a wheel at some point;
it is otherwise pristine with all decals and the Heron head badge in
perfect condition. $800, plus shipping and insurance (I'll use a smaller
than full-size bike box). Questions welcome; thanks for reading. Tom

Re: [RBW] Philadelphia Bike Expo March 16 - 17

2024-03-18 Thread Tom Goodmann
Echoing Eric: so good to see Roman, James, and Will--and three beautiful
bikes (all of which sold, I believe)--as well as meeting Roberta, Leah,
Pam, Tom, Patty, Paul, Rick (riding a Rom with 38s!) and others at PBE.
Multiple Atlantises and Platys amid the throngs. A very nice event in every
respect; lots of group rides, including Saturday night to Keystone Bicycle
Company for beer and pretzels, our group led by Pam. And seeing the work of
advocates, of component makers, and the bikes of fine builders. Very good
crowds, too, on both days. I'm glad I went. Thanks, Rivfolk!

[RBW] FS: 1994 Bridgestone RB-T, size 59; $500 OBO, plus shipping & insurance

2024-03-08 Thread Tom Goodmann
(With apologies for cross-posting from the iBOB list).
Selling my1994 Bridgestone RB-T. This one is in very good shape, mostly
original, and still a pleasure to ride. Shimano RX100 crank and triple
rings, RX100 front and rear derailleurs, Shimano bar end shifters, Sakae
0-degree/90-degree stem. Comes with Panaracer Pasela 32s and a worn but
serviceable WTB saddle; MKS Sylvan pedals. The original SR CTB handlebars
are sleeved, and were slipping inside the sleeve, so I replaced
them--thanks to a generous member of the iBOB list--with another set of the
same bars to keep the bike close to original. (The original white bar tape
went when I changed the bars; given personal cockpit preferences, I'll
leave them unwrapped, unless requested otherwise). There is a slight dimple
about halfway along the lefthand side of the top tube from a previous
owner, but no paint loss there. Otherwise, the bike is in very good
condition, including nearly all of the decals; even the original shop decal
is intact. It weighs 25.4 lbs as built.

$500 OBO for the complete bike, plus shipping & insurance to be paid by the
buyer. I will be sure to pack with great care. Photos here:

[RBW] Re: Style on the bike

2023-09-09 Thread Tom Goodmann
I empathize, Leah. Not being one for beausage in any area of life, I am
okay with wear and character on boots, but not with chain grease on pants.
You might try various ankle straps; those with velcro seem to have limited
effectiveness, as your experience suggest, and wear out over time. But
there are many others out there that may be more effective, either with an
extended strap mechanism or with a clip design (as seen in old British
films). I'm sure you can find a design that will have you rockin' the 90s
grease-free!

What a good story, Garth! I can remember that moment in time too--sorry
about Rush cancelling, though--including bike touring on those 100-degree
Midwest days on a Schwinn Le Tour. That's a pretty area of Ohio you are in
now, yes, nice for motorcycling too.

Although Mom-and-Pops stores have been replaced by Dollar Generals, the
Driftless is still a beautiful area with a strong sense of itself as a
distinctive region, whatever maps demarcate as state lines, and that river
running through it. There are active randonneuring chapters in WI and MN
and of course seasonal riding any day. Might be home again!

[RBW] Re: WTB: Nitto quill adapter, 130mm

2023-04-23 Thread Tom Goodmann
Thank you, both. I tried that one branded as Soma, Wes, and it was too
tall; I'll get hold of Ben's Cycle and confirm things, Garth.

I agree with your thumbs up for Midwestern sensibilities; I'm thinking
seriously about returning to the Driftless area for all the riding and more
that it offers.

[RBW] WTB: Nitto quill adapter, 130mm

Though likely scarce as a horn shed from a unicorn, I wonder whether anyone
might have one of these and be willing to part with
it. https://www.rivbike.com/products/nitto-mtc-quill-for-threadless-stem

I've been on the restock notification list for Riv, understanding the wait
for many things from Nitto.

Thanks for any leads!

Hi Joe,

If you contact Greg Parker, he can get you a frame; the Sportifs are classy
and classic-looking. While they are not designed for this w-i-d-e tire
moment, they sure look like wonderful road bike frames that will
accommodate tires suitable for randonneuring. It'd be great to see them
built up and as bare frames on the Heron web pages!

Excellent post, Leah, and the thread it has inspired; kudos to your LBS and
mechanic too. I can only do a few things at this point, but mean to change
that by signing up for a class at the United Bicycle Institute in Oregon
sometime in the next year, once I step off the work wheel here in May.
Like many, I expect, I've always found even modest mechanical, plumbing,
household, or electrical fixes satisfying, especially since I'm at a screen

[RBW] WTB Heron Randonneur, 59 cm

2021-11-17 Thread Tom Goodmann
As posted over at ibob, this is a quixotic quest, I'm sure, but if anyone
knows of a Heron Randonneur frame for sale, I'd be happy to learn (I see
one out there on CL, but it is a 55 cm frame). I think few of these frames
were made, so the chances are slim.

Re: [RBW] Re: FS: 59 Waterford/Riv Heron Touring, complete bike

2021-02-01 Thread Tom Goodmann
Hi, Chris;

I appreciate you writing--guess I should be asking for more for this bike!
I won't refuse a higher offer 😁I've advertised it here before, and there
was no interest at that time. I've really enjoyed it, but am trying to
clear out things in every category in life; I have a Sam (55 with the
double TT, but I wish it were the next size up that has since been
offered), a Legolas, and a Curt Goodrich prototype for the Saluki/650b (the
One Bike to Rule Them All). You're right, the Heron Touring does everything
well all day long; thanks for sharing that you fit 38s on it--very good to
know. Well, if it doesn't sell, I will take it out on the road again, and
try it with a set of Barlow Pass tires! Tom

Re: [RBW] Re: Converting a Legolas from threadless to threaded/quill

2020-08-13 Thread Tom Goodmann
Bill, thank you for an excellent analytical inquiry, a lesson in clear
thinking and in asking the right questions. I prefer the aesthetics of
quill stems and the ease they offer for making small adjustments in height,
but see that the way toward realizing that objective may be expensive. I'd
be content, then, with a longer steer tube for the threadless stem in order
to have some options using spacers. Like MoVelo, currently I ride with the
bars at a comfortable height reached only via a sloping threadless stem. A
phone call with Mark Nobilette seems in order. --Tom

[RBW] Converting a Legolas from threadless to threaded/quill

2020-08-13 Thread Tom Goodmann
This is a great bike, and not so easily found; and with the help of a local
friend from this list, the cockpit fits me well at the very limit of
spacers. The steerer was cut too short to my liking by the previous owner,
and I am frustrated that the stem is not adjustable, a feature I enjoy with
quill stems. I think the frame was made by Mark Nobilette. Has anyone
converted a threadless steerer to threaded? What do you think?

Thanks, Eric; thanks, Ray. I just found an April 22nd post about Scott
Davis, and so can get them via him or his ebay site, as well as the Compass
tires. I ride Barlow Pass 38s on the Legolas, and like them very much.

[RBW] Re: Ram as a light tourer-your experiences?

2015-03-24 Thread Tom Goodmann
Thanks, all, for a discussion that confirms my current effort to buy a Ram
frame and fork. I've been looking for a Heron Road, enjoying a Heron
Touring model already (though not as carefully built up as yours, Olof
Stroh). I got no response to my replies to a CL post for a 58 Heron Road,
but am now after a 60 Ram, getting ready to move on from an RB-T, as I
think the Rambouillet will fit me better. I plan to build it up lightly
for longer local rides, anticipating the flexibility that it shares with
other Rivs. Now, to close the deal! --Tom (Miami, FL)

[RBW] Fishing for a Heron

2015-01-24 Thread Tom Goodmann
I'm so happy commuting on a 59 cm Heron Touring bike (acquired from a
certain auction site) that I am on the hunt for a Road/Rally (60 cm, I
think), or Randonneuring model (can't find a geo chart for this model), in
case anyone has one for potential sale, either as f/f etc, or as a complete
bike.

Thanks for any leads and suggestions~

Re: [RBW] Re: Minneapolis country bike rally

2014-09-30 Thread Tom Goodmann
Sounds like a wonderful weekend, describing a potential future for so many
communities to begin planning and building as MSP has already done, and
continues to do. Miami has less infrastructure, and not nearly such a
well-developed bicycling culture, but we're getting there via efforts such
as Critical Mass rides, places such as Magic City Bicycle Collective, and
groups such as Emerge Miami. Also, we get somewhat less snow than the Twin
Cities. :) --a fact that makes such a commitment from the MSP community
all the more impressive. Wish I could have made it there! --Tom Miami, FL

[RBW] Re: Was Redemption, now fly fishing

2014-08-27 Thread Tom Goodmann
I started out combining the two with a multipiece strapped to my old LeTour
while attending grad school in Indiana, where I first saw someone fly
fishing in a small lake, and thought it the coolest activity I'd ever seen.
I still bikefish in Miami--there's a canal or a lake in a park nearly
everywhere you turn--and always keep an old glass rod in the car on my way
to anywhere around the area. Biking aside, this summer I fished for a day
while in Iceland for a meeting, catching many small brown trout on the
Varma south of Reykjavik. Am now just back from Montana, where I attended
a Project Healing Waters benefit with Greg Brown performing; we fished the
upper Big Blackfoot, where we caught lots of beautiful West Slope cutts,
and then Hound Creek where it runs through one of those huge ranch
properties--lots of browns, a few up up to 20 inches. Wow. All of us
fishing cane rods, the fly fishing analog to lugged steel frames!

Re: [RBW] Re: My new-to-me 'Beamer

2013-12-31 Thread Tom Goodmann
Thanks, Minh, and all; I'm really happy with this one, so glad that Frank
offered it to me here locally. Our South Florida roads are--ahem--not the
most friendly for bicyclists, but the cycling community here is more active
each year, and the weather is mostly cooperative, rain being the only
natural hazard (and the occasional hurricane). Everything I have read
about the QB feels spot-on: it just makes you want to go, and it may well
become (as Frank predicts) my daily commuter. The Pasela 35s feel good,
but I will try bigger tires too--he had Conti Cross tires on it, I think,
which made me want to find paved trails, or more challenging terrain. BTW,
very impressive, Ray Shine, that you can ride Mt. Tam on the QB--suddenly,
it's an All-Rounder! (As any bike can be--the "engine" being a big factor,
as GP offers in *Just Ride*). So far, in this flat terrain, 40/17 gives me
an easy-going ride, and I think I'll appreciate a 16 in back to let me dig
a bit deeper. This is a great bike; will post more photos as I sort it
out; it's a well-chosen green, to boot. Thanks, Rivfolk. --Tom

Re: [RBW] Re: Talk about the rules

2013-09-06 Thread Tom Goodmann
+1 on that point, Ron: I always feel like a happy kid again on a bike,
every single time. And I am never happier than when on a stream with family
and friends, or alone, as well. Rules? Fun to make; fun to break among
aficionados of various spots and stripes. As I think has been said on this
forum, riding a steel-frame bike is kind of like choosing to fish a split
cane rod. It's a preference, a choice that feels good for me, and brings me
in contact with very good folks on the road and on the water. My
priorities include improving my skills, and introducing others to these two
pleasures of fly fishing and cycling (and all the various maladies
attendant).

By the way, I've seen both of those enjoyable episodes in which you appear,
Ron; some on this list may not know that in the world of vintage fly
tackle, you are a widely respected authority on fly reels, in particular,
able to turn "clunk" into smooth clicking again, and very generous with
your knowledge. It helps to know How Things Work! --Tom (Miami, where

Re: [RBW] Re: Talk about the rules

2013-09-05 Thread Tom Goodmann
Right on all counts, Mike: we can all just ride. I think "The Rules" are
pretty funny too--and likely read so for many "followers," though maybe not
for all. It has been great to see the cycling community here in Miami
become a) much more visible and b) much more varied in recent years,
including (just to name a few) bike polo players (who started up a local
bike collective repair shop), a strong fixed-gear set; weekend fast club
riders; students of all stripes; people who use a bike to get around, per
need. A pretty good mix is now more evident of ages, ethnicities, genders,
budgets--and bikes. I just happen to be among those who have discarded
carbon (and aluminum), reducing my rides to steel. And yet the number of
bikes has multiplied!? I do appreciate the rule that says the ideal number
of bikes is n + 1 . . . .

Re: [RBW] Re: Recommendations for Saddle Bag--mostly for books

2013-08-23 Thread Tom Goodmann
Loads of good ideas, as usual on this list. Tom, a photo would be great; I
like the home remedy! Several recommendations, then, for the medium or
large Saddlesack (also a handsome bag). Swift Industries Mini Rolltop
panniers are the other choice I have in mind: MUSA; waxed canvas option;
two panniers for the price (+ options) of one Saddlesack. Really a question
of preference, as both are attractive options.
