[RBW] Re: Reading saddle threads, B17, Berthoud Mente

2020-07-13 Thread Ty Graham
Hi, I bought a Mente from Boulder Bicycle. The transaction was great, the
saddle not so great. I’ve been a b17 and team pro rider. I was replacing a
broken b17 Ti. I picked the Mente since it seemed closest in width to the
b17. I’ve not really been able to get comfortable, though. The shape is
very different. Thinking I’ll try the arrivis.

[RBW] Re: Can I fit J. App. or AHH in back of Civic or Impreza with back seat down?

2020-06-19 Thread Ty Graham
Just to add my .02.

I have a 2013 Honda Fit. I also have a 64cm Toyo Atlantis with fenders.

It’s a bit fussy, but I can fit with the front wheel removed. Which is nice
as far as not worrying about the bike when we’re in the city or overnight,
etc.

Honda Fit is kind of a cheap little car, but man I love how much it can
haul.

[RBW] Re: My Atlantis with Berthoud Vars ...

2019-07-23 Thread Ty Graham
John, Thanks!

That Vars is only 20 miles old! It's still a baby. Just getting used to the
Berthoud feel.

I had my Brooks B17 titanium snap on me the other day. I've been a Brooks
guy my entire cycling career. (modulo a couple Selle Italia Turbo years in
the 80s) That saddle failure shook me though. I have had doubts about
Brooks quality for the past few years (decade I guess), but now I feel like
it's time to make the switch.

The leather bar tape is 10 years old now. It's held up pretty well I guess.
It's a Velo Orange no longer available item.

[RBW] Re: Cycling After Heart Valve Replacement

2018-06-06 Thread Ty Graham

I had mitral valve surgery 15 months ago. I'm 55.

My surgery was a little different. I had repair rather than replacement. I
describe it as a pig valve, but I'm the pig. I still got the whole
e-ticket, split me in half like a chicken, heart lung machine, thing. Which
I would not choose to do again.

I agonized a lot about pig vs. mechanical. I honestly can't remember what I
chose, mechanical I guess, but it was close. I'm really finicky about
noise; a click in my chainline can make me batty. The idea of an unknown
click with no way out really worried me. There are lots of youtube videos
about clicking valves if you want to freak yourself out. OTOH, i went
through a thing with my grandmother where they gave her a pig valve, it
lasted 9 years, then she wasn't a candidate for replacement anymore. That
sucked also. In any case, I'm glad I got the repair and the decision was
moot.

Surgery was easy for me. Any issues were due to sternotomy and not my heart
per se. I think I had one down day, then I started walking. I was only in
the hospital for 4 days - lucked out there. I'm no paragon of fitness,
probably 60 pounds overweight. Still, I think my base fitness as a cyclist
really helped me bounce back.

Cycling was restricted, due to the sternotomy, for 6 weeks. I walked and
walked and walked for essentially my entire rehab. I've walked 2k miles and
ridden another 1k miles since surgery. I tried, but could never stand the
medical cardiac rehab thing. I fought with the nurses too much. Some guys
really seemed to like it though - I've never been a gym guy either.

Once I could ride, I started. Ramping up to 60 milers by August or so. (On
my Atlantis, so there's the Riv content.) I had the okay from my cardio to
ride the coast Seattle to SFO whenever I felt like it. I rode the whole
thing in 2014, so a repeat felt like a nice capstone. Also, my wife gave me
a pass to take off for a couple weeks, which Carpe F'in Diem.

In late September I set off from Portland, had some amazing riding posted
here somewhere in a trip report. My strength and speed were better than my
2014 trip. Probably due to the indulgence of doing nothing but rehab for 6
months prior. I got to Tillamook when the Las Vegas mass shooting happened.
That wrecked my mood. I called off my ride and bused home to be with my
family.

What else can I share of general interest?:
I really like the whole Apple watch, iphone, Health app, Withings scale
ecosystem. I'm a data guy and I felt empowered by having a lot of data. I
liked being able to show the Cardiogram app to my cardiologist to make some
point.
The Cyclemeter app + apple watch + iphone 8plus was all I ever felt like I
needed to track my riding and rehab. I flirted with getting an external HRM
and wahoo thing, but just never felt the need for more stuff. The apple
watch was very accurate when I checked it against echocardiograms.
Your heart rate will be much higher for a year or more after surgery. Mine
went from 56 resting to 84 resting. This made me super uptight. Now I'm
back down to resting 64-72. So, don't freak out like I did.
The anticoag drugs are no joke. I only took them for 10 weeks, but still
had a couple of stupid incidents. Filling my sock with blood from a popped
blister, etc. Don't be like me, pay attention to your body.
The eight weeks prior to surgery were way harder than the eight weeks
after. The anticipation and anxiety took a much bigger toll than I realized
at the time.

That's all I can think of right now. Happy to PM or continue the discussion
here.

Best of luck.

[RBW] Best Rack for a large saddlesack on a large frame?

2017-11-30 Thread Ty Graham
Here’s my 64cm Atlantis with a Large Saddlesack.

https://flic.kr/p/YqJFNA

I had to get a seatpost that brought the eyelets back, a VO blah. I also had to
buy the longer (42cm?) struts for my Nitto.
https://www.rivbike.com/products/nitto-rack-hardware-42cm-straight-struts-pair-20077

It’s been a really solid setup, but it was a pain to get it dialed in.

Another trick is to use the VO saddlebag eyelets that attach to the rails. That
can get you a couple of cm of drop.

[RBW] Weekend trip: PDX - Astoria - Tillamook

2017-10-08 Thread Ty Graham

I took a quick ride out to Astoria from Portland, then down 101 to
Tillamook.

I rode My Atlantis and stayed in motels.

Here are a few
photos: https://www.flickr.com/photos/13233995@N08/albums/72157687733566283

I took the Banks Vernonia trail, then 47, then 202 to Astoria route. Listed
here: https://www.portlandoregon.gov/transportation/article/301633
I like this route. Traffic was quite light on the second day from Vernonia
to Astoria. I basically saw a log truck every 10 minutes and that was about
it.
Riding from the Hillsboro MAX (light rail) station to Banks was on flat and
lightly traveled farm roads. From Banks onward I rode a very nice rail
trail with a gentle climb of ~1,000 feet.
Temperature was over 90; I was glad for the tree cover on the trail. I
stayed overnight at the Carpenter's House BnB in Vernonia which was fine,
but not great.
I woke to the sound of log trucks on a wet road. It was hard to get moving.
Services are really limited for 50 miles from Vernonia to Olney. I packed a
ton of water. So, of course, the rain was steady for the first 3 hours.
Pretty flat for 32 miles and then a climb up to 1300 feet at Mile 40. The
rain had stopped by then, but I was quite damp. Enough to get chilled by a
fun 8 mile downhill run to Olney.
There's a store with seating in Olney. I was glad for the chance to warm up.
The PDX Transportation map has you drop on to Young's River Road at Olney
for a less traveled, more scenic route. It does seem to add about 7 miles,
though. Not sure I'd take that longcut again.
There was no T-Mobile service until well after I left Olney. That is no
cell service at all for 50 miles. Something to know.
The run into Astoria ends up being the reverse of the Adventure Cycling
route from Astoria to Seaside. I was familiar. It was cool to see the
column from the reverse side as I rode into town and know I was nearly
there.

I stayed at the Norblad Hotel, where I've stayed before. They have a funky
vibe, nearby brewpub and coffee, and bike storage in the basement. Works
for me.

Next day, I rode Astoria to Rockaway Beach pretty much straight down 101.
Bypassing the Lewis and Clark route espouse by the AC maps. Did that last
time.
The Arch Cape tunnel after Cannon Beach does not really get easier after
you ride it once. It's still nerve wracking. Only takes a couple of
minutes, but man, sure every minute that some RV is going to plow into you
from behind.
After the Tunnel there's just a climb to just before Manzanita, then a nice
long downhill. Like 50mph downhill. Nice.
I had a 16mph tailwind for the last 10 miles, Mazanita to Rockaway.
I literally put in the earbuds, put Ramones Rockaway Beach on repeat, got
on the drops, and time trialled all the way in.

More later: got to run.

[RBW] I think I have the 98th Atlantis. Does anyone remember what was cool?

2017-10-06 Thread Ty Graham
After reading the other Atlantis thread here today, I went and flipped my
Atlantis to check the serial #. 0098 as near as I can read which makes sense
since I pre-bought the first run.
I remember an email from Grant telling us what we were getting. There was some
sort of tubing upgrade just because of what was available at Toyo or their
supplier at the time. It was a typical Grant statement like “It doesn’t even
really matter, and no one will ever know, but ...”

I didn’t save the email. Did anyone else? Or does anyone maybe remember the
details?

Not like I’m ever selling this bike, just wondering.

Thanks

[RBW] Portland to SF?

2017-08-29 Thread Ty Graham
I road Astoria to San Francisco in 2014. I'm planning to ride Portland to
Brookings in a few weeks.
The Oregon portion is definitely the best part. I'm repeating that portion
since the California coast at big sur is screwed up until 2018.
I rode my Atlantis with compass 700x38 which I consider the perfect bike for
this ride.
I credit card toured which was the right choice for me except for 2 downsides:
northern cal the loading gets thin. I had to put together some weird days just
to make motels work. Motels can get expensive as you get close to the Bay Area.
I paid $250 for an $80 room on Saturday in Gualala. Other down side is missing
out on hanging out with trail friends. Everyone you meet and you'll meet a lot
is camping. It was strange to keep riding past the campground on to my lonely
motel.
I used the ACA maps. I'd highly recommend. I'm pure digital, but really like
having the analog map to ponder. I have the book but didn't use it on the trip.
Folks with the book seemed to be doing a lot more 101 riding and seeing less of
the nice side roads.
Here's a link to my Flickr. You can see elevation profiles and totals in the
bottom maps. https://www.flickr.com/photos/13233995@N08/albums/72157648434202048

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell riders use for GPS computers?

2017-08-25 Thread Ty Graham
Hi,

I don't like the battery life impact on long rides, but other than that I
like Cyclemeter on my iphone.

I get the paid version for 2 reasons: I tend to click ads on accident when
I'm tired. I'm a software guy - I feel like i should pay for software that
I use.

A feature of the paid version (I think) is the automatic email of a ride
summary to multiple recipients. I really found this handy as a way to
update my wife every day while I was on my Pacific Coast trip. She got the
email and could stop worrying; I could hydrate, shower, eat, and then check
in at my leisure.

I haven't really found the voice prompts or other paid features to be
useful.

I did like having all the GPS tracks when I was done to make
maps: https://flic.kr/p/oPnQoY

I had to use a supplemental battery on some long days to keep my phone from
draining completely. This was with an iPhone 5s in 2014. I'll update with
my newer phone and app, once I get some longer rides in this year.

[RBW] Re: Help with touring route suggestions leaving Seattle, WA

You can train to Mount Vernon and Transit to the ferry dock. I'd advise
against riding Mt. Vernon to Anacortes; there's pretty gross traffic.
There's also a shuttle from Seattle downtown to the Anacortes ferry dock.

You can PM if you have questions about the San Juans. I've been riding up
there off and on since the 70s.

[RBW] Help with touring route suggestions leaving Seattle, WA

2017-06-03 Thread Ty Graham
In a completely different vein, I'd recommend riding a chunk of the Oregon
coast from Astoria to as far as you feel like.
I road Astoria to San Francisco in 2014 and I'm trying to do it again this
year. Great roads, beautiful scenery, lots of motels. And beaches.
There's a cool ride from Portland, take light rail to Hillsboro, then ride like
90 miles to Astoria. There's a midway B I've never done it, but talked to
folks on my ride that did it.
I rode from Amtrak in Kelso, WA to Cathlamet a fun little town. There's a funky
little ferry across the Columbia, then a 30 mile or so ride into Astoria. I've
also heard the ride on the WA side to the mouth of the Columbia is cool.
There's a longish bridge to take you into Astoria.
Astoria is a cool town and there's lots of Lewis and Clark side trips all
around there.
I never took it, but talked to folks that were using a shuttle bus to return
from Florence or further S on the Oregon coast all the way to Astoria.
There's all kinds of discussion of these rides and trip details.

Hi seattle resident here. I'd recommend the San Juan islands. Washington State
Ferries are great for bikes, you get to cut the hellish lines. Lopez is my
favorite island, I go there twice every summer. Beautiful and laid back
cycling. Camping is great, beach sites!, at Spencer Spit state park. Lots of
B type place all over the island. I'd recommend day excursions to Mt
Constitution and Moran state park.
Also, if the Orca are around, Lime Kiln park is an amazing place to sit and
watch them. You can check on the web to see if they're around or where they
are. Only found them one time, but it was a top 10 experience, worth the try.
This also is a good day trip from Lopez, though there are plenty of nice places
to stay in Friday Harbor.

[RBW] Atlantis! Tire question

2017-05-22 Thread Ty Graham
Hi, I'm a first run Atlantis owner (seventeen years, woot!)
I ran ruffy tuffy for a while, then Mara supremes on GP recommendation, then
Jack Brown for many years.
Hated the Mara Supremes. Deadest feeling tire I've ever ridden. No flats, but
what a price to pay!
Jack Brown was pretty good, but there's so much room on Atlantis, why not
something wider.
Simultaneously, I discovered Gran Bois Cypres on my '69 Raleigh. Great feeling
tire for a go fast bike.
When Compass came out with the Barlow Pass 700x38, I was first in line. I love
this tire in both EL and regular trim.
I rode Portland to San Francisco 2 years ago, 900 miles fully loaded on varied
road surfaces. No flats. Not a one.
I'm riding the coast again this year and I plan to stay with the Compass BP.

[RBW] Updated Atlantis build, initial Compass tire review

2015-11-10 Thread Ty Graham
Thanks for the Atlantis update. I wanted to chime in for emphasis.
I put EL Barlow Pass on my Atlantis as soon as they were available 18 months or
so ago. I love them.
When I took my 905 mile Oregon and California trip last year I switched to the
non-EL version on the recommendation of my mechanic. I'm not sure that was
necessary, but the non-EL are still a great tire.
Net net. 905 miles of great riding and no flats. I'm a big guy, the bike was
lightly loaded since I'm a credit card tourist. Still over 300 lbs with full
water bottles.
For me this was the acid test. I'm not likely to try another tire for a long
time.

Oh, and I run Dyads.

[RBW] Re: Compass Barlow Pass Tires

2015-05-03 Thread Ty Graham
I honestly don't remember what pressure I ran the Barlow Pass at. Lower
than I ever ran Jack Browns at for sure.

I fooled with them a lot at my house before departing. Having my wife
photograph the sidewall next to a steel rule while I sat on the loaded
bike. Nerdery incarnate.

I just flipped through my pics from back then. It looks like 60 or 65 psi
is where I ended up. But I wouldn't swear to it.

I do remember that once I was on the road, I never messed with them for 2
weeks. With so much air, it just doesn't matter as much.

[RBW] Re: FIRST RIDE ON MY B-17 standard

2014-10-22 Thread Ty Graham
I switched from my Professional to an old broken in B-17 for my 900 mile
California trip. Crazy to change a major component at the last minute, but
I decided I needed the comfort.

I'm really glad I made the swap. I had no issues, just 900 miles of
comfort. My legs gave out way before I had any seat issues. Really amazing
considering how little training I did before the California ride: 200 miles.

I'm going to leave this B-17 on the Atlantis.

Saddle slightly above bars. I mostly ride just behind the brake hoods. I
slide off the back, getting flat for any kind of descent (and there were a
lot of those).

[RBW] Kelso, Wa to San Francisco, Ca with Compass Barlow Pass 700x38c

2014-10-14 Thread Ty Graham
Hi,

I just yesterday completed a 900 mile ride from Kelso to San Francisco via the
Adventure Cycling Route. 18 days. 45k feet of elevation.

I rode my Atlantis with the Compass Barlow Pass 700x38c tires.

My only report is nothing to report. No flats or issues. Just mile after mile
(after mile) of smoothness and cush. Not even the funkiest road surfaces or
surprise potholes could faze these tires. I couldn't be happier with them.

Some data:
64 cm Atlantis
310 lbs for rider + fully loaded bike
70(ish) psi

I'll post more when I'm back to an actual PC.
Happy Trails

thought I loved the bike post resto. Then I tried the Cypres on my
Atlantis and loved them there. I'm a total convert.

I have Cypres regular and EL (black walls, boo) and just got the Barlow
Pass. Love them all. Ride is very similar on all. They feel smooth and
fast. Similar aliveness to the few good silk sewups I rode back in the
70s. 700x38 is probably overkill for me, but since I have 700x32 on my
Raleigh, my go fast bike, I have the Atlantis slotted for big rubber.

I still haven't made any big rides yet this season, dorking with brakes and
racks, but I sure love the Barlows for my little 20 milers.

I really like that leather tape. It's old style Velo-Orange. I put it on

I picked up the lugged stem on the first pre-order back in the day. It
finally got put on in '10 when I changed out the whole cockpit from
mustache bars. You could only get the one size when I ordered. I really
like it, but I'd probably like it more with 2cm less reach. Not ready to
buy another one, so I'm living with the excess reach. (Oh, poor me)

I used Elliot Bay Bicycle for the Raleigh resto. Bob is the man for that
kind of job.

To be clear, I'm not sure how they feel about Compass. Bob was insistent
that I try the Grand Bois tires - the same but different.

Ty- what is your LBS? Most shops I know in the area aren't that aware of

 Very enjoyable looking ride.

[RBW] Re: Nanoreview, Barlow Pass 700x38C on Dyad

2014-03-24 Thread Ty Graham
I jammed the 700x38 EL Compass Barlow Pass on a Rambouillet just as an
experiment. Didn't even ride it since my QR interfered with my buddy's
fender set up.

They rubbed his fender, but should be ridable with no fenders. We had to
deflate to get through the silver brakes.

Here's a picture of our quick
hack. https://www.flickr.com/photos/13233995@N08/13180514203/

Sorry I don't have better data, but I figure since no one else has tried
anything ...

Awesome tire BTW. I have about 35 miles on them and love them. 37mm wide
on my Dyads.

[RBW] FS in Seattle only. Park PRS-3 OS workstand

2014-01-18 Thread Ty Graham

Hey folks,

I've moved from my big house to a row house on capitol hill. There's no
room for a 100lb workstand.

Really nice and solid with some rusting on the base plate from being in my
unheated garage.

I've used to work on my Atlantis so there's the connection.

$250 OBO. I haven't put on CL yet.

Thanks

[RBW] FS: Rivish bike for kid or 5' tall person in Seattle

2013-07-18 Thread Ty Graham

Put my wife's '87 Specialized Hard Rock on CL. It's not lugged, but it is
steel.

No real interest for 2 weeks. Seems a shame to break it up for parts. I'd
like to see a kid get this ideally.

24 wheels with Schwalbe Marathons. Upgraded to '87 Deore XT (best year
for XT IMHO) on almost every part.

[RBW] Re: San Juan Islands Tour Advice

2013-05-14 Thread Ty Graham
Hi,

I'm from Seattle and have been biking and camping in the San Juans for 30+
years. I go every Summer for at least a week.

Here are some random thoughts:

I've never trained. Mount Vernon would definitely be a closer stop than
Seattle assuming you can unload your bike. There are some bus/shuttle
services from Mt Vernon to Anacortes also.

Orcas is the most Californicated of the islands, then San Juan, then Lopez,
then Shaw. I tend to avoid Orcas completely. I stay on Lopez. If you
like wine and cheese and BMW X5s, Orcas might be fine for you.

Whale watching on the West side of San Juan will make for the finest day of
biking in your life if everything works out.  It's a total crap shoot;
sometimes the whales are there, sometimes not. When the whales are close
in, it's magical. With the new rules for whale watching boats, I think you
can see better from the shore than from a tour boat. Look for the web
sites that list whale activity to get a rough idea before heading out. In
any case the ride down the West side to Lime Kiln park is very pretty.

Spencer Spit state park on Lopez is my fave camping. Good bike access and
surprising how few folks hang out on the beach. The yachting types seem to
stay on their boats except when they need to walk their dogs. Upright head
has a nice sand beach and views of the Ferry lanes. Watmough Bight is a
good day ride down to the south end and a beautiful setting. There's a
good map from the chamber of commerce in Lopez Village. Public showers in
Lopez village (24 hours?).

Folks are impressed by the hills on San Juan and Orcas. Check the
elevation profiles just to get an idea.

2 weeks would be a lot of time to spend in the San Juans. On islands like
Lopez you can ride literally every road on the island in one day. I'd
guess you'd be happy spending a week with time for PDX or Victoria
supplements.

Here's another way to do the San Juans, not my style, but interesting.

 Greetings All,

Planning a tour this summer for my wife and I up to the San Juan Islands.
We have about two weeks to spend on my Hillborne and her Atlantis exploring
the area. We live in Berkeley and are planning to take the amtrak up and
 then ferry and cycle around.

I know there are a bunch of NorWesters on this list and wanted to ask some
advice. We'll likely try to spend at least a day or two in Portland on our
 way back as well.

Is the Seattle Amtrak the best station to get off?
If so, does this look like a good route to get to the ferry?
 http://goo.gl/maps/uxOqM
Any campsites along that route that are recommended?
Any words of wisdom about the islands themselves (things we must
 see/avoid)?

Looking forward to sharing images with the list when we return and also
open to any recommendations as they emerge.

 Cheers,
 Adam
