[RBW] CSJ: Non-moose Boscos

2016-08-09 Thread cam starnes
Just noticed that the 2016 Clems (one of which is my anxiously
awaited/still awaiting 52c green pre-order) are shipping with normal,
non-bullmoose Boscos. I suppose it's silly to be disappointed, but I have
always liked the integrated look of the various bullmoose variants, and
also thought the added stiffness would be good, generally, and especially
good for yanking that long, stout bike around while hauling my commuting
load. Any thoughts?

The actual order page makes no mention of it, but this page notes the 2016
batch is non-moose: http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/f-clemsmith.htm.

Interesting. Thanks, Scott. Guess that makes sense! If I could ask, when
did you place your preorder? Trying hard to be patient and not bug
Rivendell folks with better things to do about where my Clem is in the
queue!

[RBW] Re: CSJ: Non-moose Boscos

2016-08-10 Thread cam starnes
Thanks for this - that's exactly my quandary. I like the adjustability
(have heard several folks say they like their Boscos at more of an angle
than the moose version) and the additional real estate next to the stem for
the forward grip, but I do worry about flex. 58cm Boscos + 120mm stem = a
lot of potential for wiggly metal under load, and I tend to dislike that
"torsion" feeling. I'm not exactly a featherweight dude, plus I like to use
my bike to carry stuff - commuting loads, full growlers of beer, 750mL
bottles of whiskey (okay, so there's a trend there), both of which I fear
will exacerbate the flexiness. I know I could spring for a bullmoose
version separately, but there are so many other bikey accessories and such
that I'd rather buy... Guess we'll just wait and see how it goes. Thanks
again.

[RBW] Re: CSJ: Non-moose Boscos

2016-08-11 Thread cam starnes
There's a thought - I do love a good handlebar swap! To me, no single part
changes the personality of a bike quite so drastically, which can certainly
keep things fun and interesting. I want to give Boscos a good fair shake
first, in light of Zed Martinez's excellent Clem review and the fact that
GP seems to have had Boscos specifically in mind when he designed the bike.
But, because you've already piqued my curiosity, how is the Clem with Choco
bars? That likely extends your reach quite a bit as compared to Boscos,
yes? Also, when did you place your Clem preorder? Trying to subtly gauge
how soon mine might ship... I ordered July 2.

[RBW] Shoes for rambling.

my go-to is birkenstock - good support, especially for my high arches, and the
right amount of stiffness. the standard foam outsoles can get torn up by pedals
relatively quickly (though they still function fine), but they grip pretty
well. but if rain and/or walking/hiking are part of the outing in addition to
the riding, i’m also in the blundstone camp. they’re great for about
everything.

[RBW] Sharing a 52 Clem L with my much shorter spouse. Feasable? Crazy?

2018-09-05 Thread cam starnes
my wife and i currently “share” a 52c clem. it’s my bike, but when we ride
together with our two kids i’m usually the one pulling the kids (xtracycle
edgerunner, and it’s awesome), and she rides my bike because she prefers it to
her own. works well, honestly, we just move the seat up and down a lot.
however, my wife is 5’6” with a PBH of 81 and we basically have the seatpost
slammed for her. so, my concern would be that even shoved all the way down to
the rails of the seatpost the 52 clem might still be too tall for your wife.

2018-09-06 Thread cam starnes
Oops. You’re right. My wife’s PBH is 2-2.5 INCHES lower than mine; several more
than 2 centimeters. I’m between 83 and 84 cm, my wife is right around 77. Also,
“slammed” is probably not a helpful term for me to have used - probably more
accurate to say that we set the saddle (Cambium C19) low enough for my wife
(77PBH) to be able to ride the 52 Clem that I would be surprised if someone
with 74PBH could get the saddle low enough to work. But I could certainly be
wrong. I suppose, as was pointed out, that if 74 is within Riv’s range it could
work. My Clem is an H, as well, but stand over height is not an issue for my
wife even then, and the L eliminates that as a concern altogether, of course.

Who runs Ahearne+Map bars and do you dig them for rides of 50+ miles? I've
read plenty of people calling them comfy, but curious whether that's just
on shorter, townie rides or even for longer distances. They would appear to
offer at least two solid hand positions, or is it more than that? And if
anyone has some lying around, I might be interested in trying them on my

Like many, I would imagine, I first learned of Rivendell via the musings of
the inimitable Sheldon Brown. I was in to fixed gear bikes at the time, on
which subject Sheldon was of course a non-hipster (or maybe an O.G.

Trek 720 to a pretty Riv-ified VO Campeur to a Clem Smith, Jr. and now a
canti Sam Hillborne. Have always admired the old Atlantis above all. So,

[RBW] Re: Ahearne+Map Comfort... Also, WTB

2018-10-01 Thread cam starnes
Always something else, indeed, Tom. Have 46c Noodles perched on a Dirt Drop on
the Sam currently. It feels great, so my question is more related to the
“something else” nature of the Ahearne+Map bar, which is one I’ve never tried
and have long been curious about. Have ridden Alba, Bosco, Moustache,
Albastache, numerous road drops, riser bar, track drops, flipped/chopped track
drops... alll had their strengths and weaknesses, of course. With the ‘stache
bars I just could never get used to leaning forward to brake - always felt
backwards to me. Really like Albatross bars, generally, because of the range of
hand positions and the range of body positioning that goes with them. All told,
I’d probably swap cockpits monthly if it weren’t such a pain, just for the sake
of variety. Much of my riding is commuting and/or rides of 20 miles or less, I
would just hate to commit the expense and work of even trying Ahearne bars just
to scratch an itch if feedback is that those are strictly short-distance bars.
Because occasionally I like to ride a bit further. Don’t fix what ain’t broken,
you might say. Ah, but “broken” is a relative term sometimes.

So I take it the procedure is to slip off the grips, levers, shifters, pull
the bar out, clamp the new bar in, and clamp the levers and grips back on?
Or do you have the other set of bars already on a stem and just swap out
the whole thing? Interesting. Obviously trickier with road bars. I have
long wished someone would invent a sort of cable quick release so one can
swap entire cockpits at will...

Oddly black and modern, I agree. My Sam is black, so I figure the black
will be somewhat less jarring (to my eyes, anyway) than if it were orange
or blue, but I kind of think it's cool, too. Some of the Blue Lug builds of
Rivs and, especially, Crusts are inspiring me. No complaints about the
current square taper BB, Silver crank, satin Nitto stuff I have on now, but
still curious. Anybody seen Rivs running external bearing BBs? Is the one

That looks good! This is very similar to what I'm thinking. And that White
Industries crank is just incredible... I've always wanted the "excuse" to
buy one. Maybe this is it!

I swear I have responded to all of these posts, but my posts take forever
to be approved, so the conversation may be beyond revival. Thank you all
for your responses, nonetheless.

Looks like it sold. At least, the posting has been deleted. I emailed and
texted the seller, as I was quite interested in buying, but never heard
back. I definitely regarded it as a screaming deal, though I'm also not
convinced from what I could see in the photos that it is in the "excellent"
shape that was claimed.
