[RBW] Albatross V-brake levers

2014-01-03 Thread carnerda...@bellsouth.net
I recently ordered Albatross bars for my early green Sam. After trying
several options, staying with V-brakes. RBW does not currently offer
V-brake compatible levers for non-drop bars. Would appreciate
recommendations for best choice and where to buy. LBS is not a good option,
as closest is 55 miles away.

[RBW] Re: Sam H. + Hetres + Fenders = Tire Rub?

2014-02-22 Thread carnerda...@bellsouth.net
I have a 52 green and gold Sam H with the original Fatty Rumpkins and VO
stainless steel fenders (58 mm). There is greater than 1 cm clearance
between tire and fender all around, front and rear. No rubbing.
Incidentally, the Fatty Rumpkins measure slightly wider (39mm) on Atlas
rims than my Hetres (38 mm) on Synergy rims.

[RBW] Grant at Fairhope, Alabama

Don't know if any other list members are planning to make it to this book
signing and ride. If so, this information might be useful.
According to the bookstore website, the signing is happening on Friday
evening, May 4, from 6-8 PM.
The ride, third annual Good Life Ride, is on Sunday AM, with more book
signing to follow.
This was confirmed by email by Karin Wilson last night.
Wish I could make it, but looks doubtful.

I think a few people have experimented or at least measured for this - You
should take a loop through the archives - this topic has cropped up a couple
of times. In a more generic list, like iBob, the basic question is the
efficacy of changing a 26" (559) wheeled bike to a 650B (584).

Unlike the initial idea of 650B/584 conversion from a 700C/622 size, the
core question might be "what do you hope to gain?"

For a cantilever brake equipped bicycle, I'd say the first mechanical issue
to consider is that of brake position.

- Jim

VO blog from 20 May, 2011 has one person's opinion/experience of this
conversion on a 26" LHT. Not an Atlantis, but similar geometry and
cantilever brakes.

2009-07-11 Thread carnerda...@bellsouth.net

With all the interest generated by the anticipated, new club-rider
road bike, thought it might be an appropriate time to bring up the
history of pre-Ram Rivendell road bikes. The only mention of these on
the cyclofiend site is in the list of models and there seems to be a
dearth of specific information on these bikes on the web in general.
Some specifics of interest to me:
Were the Heron Road and Rivendell Road Standard available at the same
time or did one succeed the other? Did they have the same lugs,
geometry, tubing? Is there a reliable way to differentiate a semi-
custom Road from a Road Standard? What features could be changed on a
custom - tubing, braze-ons, brakes, geometry? Were all match-built
Rivendell Roads Standards? Are geometry charts available for these
bikes - in Readers or catalogs? How will the new road bike compare to
these? From reading about the Ram, the major changes made from the
Roads were long reach brakes, wider fork crown, longer chain-stays,
double taper seat stays. Did trail and bb drop remain about the
same? Sounds like the new bike will have some features of both, but
lighter tubing than either.
David

[RBW] Re: Rivendell road bike history

2009-07-11 Thread carnerda...@bellsouth.net

Thanks to all for the information. I have been "planning" to get the
CD's since they became available. Each time I place an order I think
- oooh, 40 more bucks, maybe not this time. If I had really planned
I could have added one to every other order and had them all a long
time ago.
Thanks again, David

I vote for the zip ties. As long as you have some small wire cutters
and plenty of zip ties it is 30 seconds to remove and 90 seconds to
install. Very secure. In my opinion the duct tape would be a mess and
the velcro would allow the basket to move around.

[RBW] Re: Right Frame Size?

2009-08-07 Thread carnerda...@bellsouth.net

I assume that recommendation was made on the basis of your reach.
According to the geometry chart the TT on the 650/58 is 58.5 while on
the 700/57 it is 57. I have a PBH of 84.5, but a short torso. With
drop bars and my seat back where I like it I find that a TT of over 57cm
has me more stretched out than I prefer. If you have a longer torso or
are more flexible than I or plan to use Albatross type bars, the longer
TT would be fine.

[RBW] Is this rim wear unusual

2010-08-13 Thread carnerda...@bellsouth.net
My 650B Sam Hillborne has Velocity Synergy rims and Shimano Deore V-
brakes with the pads that came on them. Since new the front wheel has
had a little tick with each revolution while braking. I assumed this
was a slightly raised joint line that would flatten out with normal
wear. Over the last two weeks I have had three12-15 mile rides on
gravel and chip seal roads which include some steep sections with
multiple pot holes and required heavy braking. Between these rides I
had the usual short commutes to work. I noticed that braking in the
front had become much more uneven to the point that firm application
of the front brake caused an unpleasant "thump" with each revolution.
I decided it was time to clean the braking surface. When I did I
found the front rim to be fairly deeply scored and in a pattern where
the deepest scoring corresponds to each spoke hole. This is the same
on both sides of the rim. The rear rim does not have this pattern. I
have never seen this and can't find mention of it on the internets.
The links below are to pictures I took to try to show the pattern.
Am I doing something wrong to cause this? Should I change to
different brake pads? Should I be worried about this?

Re: [RBW] Re: Is this rim wear unusual

2010-08-15 Thread carnerda...@bellsouth.net
First, thanks to all who have shared their experience, observations and
advice.

Here are the brake pads:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/carner/4892840374/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/carner/4892244553/
I removed the tire and rim tape and closely inspected the rim. I saw no
signs of even tiny cracks, inside or out. I put the rim on my very
basic Minoura Workman Pro truing stand. Best I can tell the rim is
true to less than a mm. radially and laterally. I could not detect any
irregularities of the braking surface. Specifically, I could not find
any area where the rim was "fatter" than it should be.The scoring was
bad enough that I used a maroon abrasive pad to smooth off the worst
high spots, replaced tire, remounted with the same pads (after cleaning)
and today got in a short test ride. The braking is very smooth, too
smooth in fact. Even the original little "tick" is gone, but there is
some loss of stopping power, I assume from my sanding. I plan to do the
burnishing thing before replacing the tire, although I am a little vague
on exactly how that is done. "Instructables" has instructions on using
a home made stone made out of slate for burnishing anodized rims, but I
don't have any slate available.
As I mentioned in the original post, I have had several rides lately on
mostly gravel roads. On one of those, the roads were wet. The damage
was apparently done by getting sand and small stones stuck in the pads.
I guess I do need to be more careful about cleaning the pads after a
ride in those conditions. Also, have been planning to get the Yokozuna
cartridge shoes and pads from RBW. The last time I placed an order they
were out of stock, but I see they are back. Does anyone have experience
with these or have another recommendation? From looking at the pictures
they have the cross grooves similar to the Shimano pads.
I am also trying to decide if all this trouble is a definite sign that I
should replace the front V-brake with a Paul Neo-Retro :-) .

David

EricP wrote:

Will agree with Tim, that the o/p should check his brake pads.
However, will also agree with David Craig and suggest the person also
pull the tire, tube and rim strip and make sure there are no cracks in
the rim with that wear. Had two Velocity rims crack internally, so am
more paranoid about them

However, as that seems to be all the way around the rim, would think
it's more an issue of the pads.

Yes, this should be clarified. The spoke tension causes a tiny
amount of bulging in the rim wall by each spoke which is why it wears
more there. This tends to be evident only on rims with anodized
sidewalls and/or where the brake pads are especially abrasive for
some reason. Back in the bad old days of dark "hard" anodized rims
there was a spate of really ugly wheels out there. This was solved
by machining down the sidewalls, which not only improved the
aesthetics but also improved braking; anodizing is a bad brake
surface for several reasons.

In the photos, the scoring looks unusually bad for a rim with this
few miles on it. That's why I suggested looking at the braking
surface of the pads to see what's stuck in there. Some pad materials
are more prone than others to picking up flecks of aluminum from the
rim which becomes a nice abrasive. Or pads with gaps and voids in
them can pick up small pieces of rock, etc. I have found that some
Shimano pad materials seem especially abrasive.

With the Bombadil I had no trouble getting used to the double top tubes and

the diagonal tube can help in the same manner.

I don't really like the gray color either, I somehow think that the

side on the train a Toyo Atlantis against mine, and while not as different
as the AHH blue, the Waterford is still more "creamy" and has the same
feeling of magic depth that the Waterford blue has for me. The gray
definitely doesn't do it for me. :-)

I think that with my current stable I'm set for a very long time (Homer,
Altantis & Betty) so I'll be watching the evolution of the Rivendell frames
for the time being.

One thing is for sure... no one can stay indifferent to the Rivendell bikes!

[RBW] Vibrating chain

2010-10-08 Thread carnerda...@bellsouth.net
Wondering if anyone can explain this phenomenon.
A couple months ago found a Wipperman 9sx chain at a good price.
Still an extravagance, but decided to get it for my Riv Road (riv
content) which had been relatively neglected since the arrival of the
52 Sam. Previous chain needed cleaning, but passed the stretch test
easily. Measured and installed the chain according to directions from
Sheldon Brown. Immediately noticed a vibration- thrrumming?- I had
never experienced before. Occurred primarily with acceleration or
mashing a high gear, especially when standing, with each pedal down-
stroke. Was diminished but not eliminated by concentrating on smooth,
full-circle pedaling. Just as bad on cog with straightest chain line
as any other.Drive train consists of a Phil BB, TA Pro 5 vis crank, 44
and 28 TA rings with no visible wear, Shimano 12-32 9-spd cassette,
105 RD.
Tried to ignore it, but it "felt" inefficient and was very annoying
since the Riv Road is otherwise smooth and quiet. So I recently
replaced the cleaned old chain (Sunrace, unknown model) and there is
not even a hint of the vibration. Also, put the Wipperman chain on the
52 Sam (Sugino XD triple, steel chain rings, Deore LX RD, Shimano
12-36 cassette. No vibration no matter how hard I mash.
Is this explainable, predictable, avoidable? --- or just an
idiosyncrasy?

Can't help you with a sale, but read your description with interest as I

with 54 on the right side of the bb shell. It has a Cyclotourist

hidden cables. Suntour Cyclone calipers. Of course, a honey Brooks
B-72 saddle.

I bought this in 2001? from a fellow who had it built up by
Rivendell, and because of health reasons had never used it. I think I
have about 500 miles on it, always stored indoors, no rain, no
brevets. The only marks I can find on it are two tiny rub marks on the
head tube from cables, and a tiny pin-sized chip on the left chain-
stay.
Included are assorted parts from the original owner including 2 NOS
spare freewheels.

I thought I would list it here first, looking for $1900 plus actual
packing and shipping from a good local shop (Boston area). Local
pickup OK. If no go here I plan an ebay auction beginning at $2000.
As an All-Rounder frame sold on Ebay recently for $1400 including
brakes, I think this is a fair price. If you think not, let me know
why.
Nothing to say to this group about the bike, it is a great mellow
ride, I my hope is someone here can enjoy it as much as I have.

PS- found an old email- the frame was built in late 1999. The wheels
were built by Joe Young.

[RBW] Grip King/ MKS Lambda pedal spikes

2010-05-03 Thread carnerda...@bellsouth.net
Recent order from RBW included a bag of blunt pedal spikes. Installed
8 per pedal in the manner described on the RBW site, except I did not
have the appropriate vise-grip. Used a slightly over-sized socket
wrench instead. After a short rainy test ride I was well satisfied
with the results except that on inspection later in the evening, 3 of
the spikes were missing, all from the non drive side pedal. I accept
that this was most likely due to user error. My theory is that the
missing spikes were started crooked and when snugged down to the
straight position the shallow threads were stripped.
Nevertheless, it prompted a trip to the local hardware. Their thread
sizing board identified the spikes as 4mm with a 0.7mm thread pitch.
They had the matching plug tap in stock for $3.79 (made in the USA).
Recommended drill bit is a #30 wire gauge bit (3.26mm diam.) for
$2.99. While there I purchased a 100 mm vise grip for $12.99 (made in
Taiwan).
I am passing this information along in case it would save some time
for someone else who may prefer to cut the threads with a tap.

Re: [RBW] Re: Grip King/ MKS Lambda pedal spikes

2010-05-03 Thread carnerda...@bellsouth.net
I used a 7/64 bit (half way between the 3/32 and 1/8 recommended by
RBW. The spikes that stayed in are tight. I have checked and think I
would have a difficult time removing them to re-thread. I really think
my mistake was not getting them started straight. Two that fell out
were in the extreme outboard holes where I had a previous pedal strike
on pavement that had deformed the "lip" and probably pretty much
guaranteed that I would start them crooked.
I am not suggesting that secure installation requires tapping. Just
another option. A little more complicated, but not that expensive if
you leave out the new vice grip.

amoll68 wrote:

David,

I installed spikes in my GKs, but didn't need to tap them - can't

too big (maybe what happened to you?) I went down a size, and they all
went in fine, and I haven't lost a spike in over a year. IIRC, I used
a small metric socket to drive them home.

They work great - esp. in the wet.

All went well until I clicked on "OK place this order already". I

I received an email confirmation of the order with all information

Building up my Hillborne, I tried to put Deore V-brakes on it.
However, the Deores would not slide all the way down the brake post/
stud/boss/whatever. The pin which anchors the spring in one of the
holes on the brake post did not fully insert into any of the 3 holes.
Also, the front brake was protruding far enough that it interfered
with the mini front rack.

Anybody else have this experience? If so, do you feel the brake will
function reliably with the anchor not fully seated? Did you find a way
to fully seat the anchor?

(I also had some Tektro 857AL brakes; they fit fine. And they also
look stupendously ugly, especially with salmon-colored pads. They
work. But did I mention how ugly they are? Wow, are they ugly. But
this is the sort of sacrifice one makes, since the hideousness of
their ugliness and the shame of being associated with that horrible
sight in any way is far outweighed by the glory of being able to
actually ride one's Hillborne.)

Re: [RBW] Front loading ...???

2010-07-11 Thread carnerda...@bellsouth.net
Have you determined the actual weight you will be carrying on tour?
Once that is set perhaps you could find a point of balance that
optimizes the handling of your SH?

PATRICK MOORE wrote:
Inaugural ride -- yes, brief; 11-12 m rt to grocery store and PO and

after, granted, no more than six miles?

1. 10 lb does not seem to materially help front end stability; the
bike still has the slight "wandering" feeling so absent from my other
Rivs. This on the straight and levels. I did not have a chance to test
it up a 12% grade in a sub 30" gear.

2. Turning is more cumbersome: one virtue of the Sam Hill is that,
when you lean, it turns. With the 10 lb, steering is definitely slower
and requires more conscious input.

So, I assume that some bikes are just not as front load friendly as
others? I must add 10 to 20 more lbs in front to try out a real load.
And, of course, put on more front loaded miles before I conclude with
finality. But I suspect that this bike, as my Motobecane, really
prefers rear loads. No?

Jay,
Sort of hoped there were some Riv riders in the neighborhood, but always
glad to hear of folks visiting New Orleans. We currently live 130 miles
north on I-55 in south Mississippi, but my wife and I met and married in
NOLA and in many ways it is still home for us.
Glad you plan to come back. I will take you up on the ride during next
year's JazzFest. Perhaps we can generate enough interest to get other
list members to join us. New Orleans is always worth the trip!

[RBW] Ram owner in Red Stick

2009-06-06 Thread carnerda...@bellsouth.net

Riding in Baton Rouge on a beautiful, unseasonably cool morning and
met up with a gentleman on a Miyata tourer with a larger Loafer on the
back rack. He reported that one of his other bicycles is a
Rambouillet. He is not a member of the RBW owners bunch, but I
encouraged him to sign up.
May be a pipe dream, but I am trying to find enough Rivish riders in
the NOLA, south Louisiana and Mississippi Gulf coast area to organize
a ride.

[RBW] Re: Rivs in the UK

2016-02-09 Thread carnerda...@bellsouth.net
Stu,
As a fellow Sam Hillborne owner and a fan of the Swansea City Swans I was
excited to see your post and pictures. My son is also a Swans fan and we had
dreams of a trip to Swansea at the end of April to celebrate his fortieth
birthday. Economics and family responsibilities have squashed those plans, but
if we ever make it would hope to include a cycling tour in our plans.

[RBW] WTB 52 (650B) canti Sam

2015-04-19 Thread carnerda...@bellsouth.net
I have a friend who has decided to return to cycling. I loaned him my Sam for
the weekend along with a copy of "Just Ride." When I picked it up this
afternoon he announced that he had bought the Kindle version of the book and
wants to get a bicycle "just like yours." He even prefers the original green
color. I told him I would make inquiries on the list on his behalf for
starters. Anything from frame/fork to complete bike would be considered.
Offers, questions, suggestions can be posted on the list or sent directly to my
email address.
Thanks, David

I bought my Sam frame from Rivendell in early 2010. If I remember
correctly there were both orange and green frames being sold at that time,
but the 52 was only available in green.

Road hubs: QL-ZL7R look the closest - 6 pawls, etc. , just not enough holes in
the flanges.
I have ordered a set of the Silver from Rivendell.

This would be a 6 pawl: http://o-lite.com.tw/news.php?m=d&id=16&p=1
I called Riv and talked with Rich. I was mainly asking about the availability
of the 130 end caps, but also asked if the body was steel or aluminum. He first
said aluminum, but after checking said steel.

[RBW] Re: The Silver Hubs

2015-08-08 Thread carnerda...@bellsouth.net
My hubs arrived yesterday. They look at least as good "in person" as in the
photos. The alloy vs steel question has already been answered. I plan to take
the recommended precautions, but that is not a deal-breaker for me. I hope
that issue does not make them go away. As others have said, if Rivendell sells
them I am willing to use them.
I could not resist dismantling them part way before passing them on to the
wheel builder. One thing I learned is that you need at least one 10 mm. hex
wrench in addition to the two fives.

Re: [RBW] Re: The Silver Hubs

2015-09-15 Thread carnerda...@bellsouth.net
Rich said I would receive an email when/if the 130 end caps were available.
None yet. He also said he felt it would be no problem if I squeezed them into
my 130 spaced Riv Road. Was easier than I expected. I have had my new wheels
with these hubs for about a week with limited riding opportunities, maybe 20
miles so far, so not much to report. Thought I would pull the cassette and
check the hub body around the end of the year. I did remove the body and put a
ring of Phil grease on the pawls. I don't hear as well as I once did, but to my
ears they are virtually silent.
