[RBW] Re: Thanks Grant
It started off that way but of course specifics are now being discussed/argued. I'm not saying I don't agree with Grant (no idea where you got that, that is your poor assumption), but even Grant used his blog, not this forum. There is a time and a place. But hey, it's not my forum, I'm just a guest, as are all of you. If this is how things are run here, who am I to have a problem with it? All I can do is offer my opinion on the matter. [RBW] Re: Thanks Grant
I have to agree with Matt. This is not the place for discussion of politics. At least I didn't think so. Nothing good ever comes from a political post (evident in this very thread) on a non-political forum, and most non-political forums/discussion groups don't allow it. Thanks guys. :) Tully Lanter, the Albastache require less reach to the front curved brake area and the bar ends are a couple inches longer. [RBW] Re: Why not a suspension-corrected fork/frame?
For my mountain biking, there is no replacing my full suspension mtn bike. Period. That's ok though. I have my Riv for my casual riding on roads and light trails and my specialized rockhopper for taking the real abuse. In other words, don't force something to be something it's not. Let Riv be Riv. If you're riding requires some sort of suspension, there are so many good options out there already. Thank you. :) I love the pedals. Goes well with the copper rails and studs on the brooks saddle. The copper bottle gauge will match nicely. I did find some metallic copper twine that I thought would look great on the bars instead of the plain hemp. But that was a big fail and I promptly removed it. Too gaudy! Well, pretty much. haha Here's a little Sunday afternoon bike porn. :) https://photos.app.goo.gl/FeRHJz2RMefnKe9RA Used a few older parts, and picked up several new parts as well. Not sure how well it will wear over time, but this Serfas cloth bar tape is pretty nice. Has a little bit of padding too it and the fabric is nice and soft feeling. And it's wrapping around a brand new Albastache bar which is a first for me. Have had the moustache bars before and they were ok but so far I really like these. It is a bit stripped down at the moment. I'll be adding a copper bottle cage, possibly a frame pump... and for now it's a fair weather rider so no fenders or racks at this time. Rides awesome! Super smooth. :) This is my third Riv build now and once again, not disappointed. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. I just finished up my new Sam build and bought a new RD for it without even thinking about it. Now shifting it with my bar-ends feels all wrong since it's opposite of what I was used to. [RBW] FS: A. Homer Hilsen Frame 56/650b
This is an original Homer, about 8 years old. Size 56 and sized for 650b wheels. The cool part is that it has a custom green paint job (Joel Green) from Joe Bell. The not cool part is the paint/decal got a bit damaged on the seat tube from a baby carrier that was clamped there. The rest of the frame has the expected chip here and there in the usual places, nothing atypical from a frame that is several years old. No dents or anything like that. But due to the seat tube area, I'd expect the new owner of this lovely frame would want to have it repainted. And I even have a brand new set of decals and head tube badge to go along with it! So I'm offering this frame, fork, decals, head tube badge, Nitto seat post, headset and bottom bracket for $800 shipped. Or local pickup in the Houston, TX area. I also have the set of 650b Riv-Built wheels with front generator hub. $300 + shipping. Pics are here, and I included a few full-build iterations from over the years just for kicks. https://photos.google.com/album/AF1QipOr4HXBHZ684Fb5w06LpIVazgOhUG2ThU9hXZl7 -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Re: Eat Bacon Don't Jog--Goal set, goal met
Yup, fully agree with all that! Or assume I will when I reach 61, i'm sure quicker than I thought. lol This is the book i was referring to https://www.amazon.com/dp/B006XF5BTG I also got this one because I decided to commit to his program for a year and this just makes it easier since it's a year's worth of programming and log book. https://www.amazon.com/dp/1938895231 If you step back and look at it, it's not al that different from other beginner/intermediate programs like Starting Strength, Fierce Five, etc. But yeah, I'd say this book (the first one above) was as much a help to me as Gary Taub's book (another Grant favorite) was about 8 years ago. That's the one that really got me started. 6% I couldn't do! 10 would be a more realistic goal. I'm about 11-12 now but said that's enough and starting my first lean bulk. An hour a day M-F first thing in the morning before anyone else is up is all I have time for. Re: [RBW] Re: Eat Bacon Don't Jog--Goal set, goal met
Yes, that's a great one and in my library as well. :) It's a great read and it's awesome as a reference book for learning the proper form for all the main compound moves. Wouldn't want to be without it! I like Mike's book because he takes the majority of Rip's views and technique on strength training and combines them with his own views on diet. His book contains a large bit of information on food and eating with scientific studies to back it up. He even provides sample meal plans for cutting and bulking, for men and women, and at different body weights. He also talks about supplements in detail. Rip is purely all about getting stronger. Whereas Mike is probably equally concerned with aesthetics... moderate muscle, low bodyfat % looking ripped. Re: [RBW] Re: 26.0 vs 31.8
They have some interesting points about steering/handling and toe overlap with a wheel that was farther out front and slacker angles, but that won't change just by changing your stem. The bike would have to be designed with this in mind. By using their stem you'd get a more upright riding position due to the shorter reach and you may experience better some better steering, but not to the extent of their wright brothers mumbo jumbo, and toe overlap would remain unchanged. But interesting thoughts nonetheless. On Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at 8:39:50 AM UTC-5, Patrick Moore wrote: > > I have to agree. I'm with you... I am not a fan of V-brakes at all as far as aesthetics go. Looks like someone ran out of brakes and slapped on a mountain bike part they had laying around the garage. Canti's or standard road brakes for me. :) Then again, I don't do heavy loaded touring where every ounce of brake performance makes a difference. Yes, but that wasn't the point of the question. As I said, no big deal (cheap/easy to get). Just received my SH Canti frame and realized there was no cable hangers included, permanent or otherwise. Had to order some for front and back. [RBW] Re: Need 650b Tires
I got the new Some Xpress tires yesterday. I haven't ridden on them but they seem pretty nice. Good looking tires and real easy to get on the rim with no tools. They are definitely wider and more plump than my old nifty swifty tires, to the point that my sks fenders were almost too small. A little adjusting and they are clear but the tires fill up the whole width of the fenders. Will report back once i have a chance to ride them. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Thomas, you are right. No matter where you put it there will be interference with your hand. Thanks, Lee! Not overboard at all. ;) These will be going on my Homer. I currently have just the rear rack installed with an Arkel Tail Rider and I switch back and forth between a side pannier and a messenger bag depending on my mood. Usually I'm only carrying clothes and other odd/ends for the day, no touring, strictly commuting. I'm looking for durability, comfort and speed, probably in that order. But speed is still important, just the least of the three. In other words, I don't want something that is *noticeably* sluggish compared to the NS. But if it's really slight and I'm gaining something somewhere else, than that's ok. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: who needs carbon? (healdsburg century ride)
With all due respect, the new MINI may not be like the old Mini, but it is a far cry from a "travesty". ;) It still corners like mad, probably only bested on the autocross circuit by the Miata, but the MINI is a much more refined automobile. It really is some impressive German engineering. Thanks for the suggestions guys. But as weird as it sounds, i have tried a lot of bars and when I'm on the mtn bike, i just don't think about my bars. Just like when I'm on my Homer and I don't think about my Brooks seat. I've done the albatross and dislike them. Done moustache and dislike those as well. Have portuer bars now as well as the noodles and out of everything the porteurs are the best. But not as comfy long term as the mtn bike bars. They look like these. (not my pic) http://www.bargainbikesforsale.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/Mountain_bike_handlebar.jpg So i shouldn't have a problem finding bars, i'm more concerned with all the other parts and issues I may run in to. > I historically have hated straight bars, flat bars, mountain bars, Me too! Which is why I'm shocked that I'm liking them better and finding them much more comfortable. No matter the rise, stem length, etc I'm never 100% on the drop bars. Overall it seems to be due to the hand/wrist position. And the top straight portion is never wide enough. So ya, i'm pretty much set on some sort of almost flat/straight bar. I just looked at the bullmoose bars and unfortunately riv is out of stock. :( But those do look nice. [RBW] Please help me wrap my head around this
Hi, sometimes excessive google searching gives me a headache. :P I currently have noodle bars on my homer commuter, 42cm width. My commute is about 12.5 miles each way and sometimes they can get a bit uncomfortable. I spend all my time on the tops. I also have a specialized mountain bike that I hit the trails with during lunch. The trails are pretty insane, all tree roots and stuff. We'll do a good mix of the trails and road, usually about 12 miles total. Between the two bikes, the flat bars of the mtn bike are drastically more comfortable for me. I think it's two things... the hand/wrist position and the wide hand position, wider than my shoulders. They have a rise and a backward sweep, typical of pretty much every production mtn bike these days. So I'm thinking of fitting that style bar to my homer and wondering if you guys have any advice on making the switch as painless as possible, in terms of what parts to use, what needs to be swapped out, etc. I do really like my bar-end shifters so if I could use those with thumbies or something that would be cool. I would also like to fit a pair of retro looking ergo grips, which i assume only come in mtn bike bar diameters? All advice appreciated. So comfortable and perfect for commuting. :D To answer some questions, yes they are the VO Porteur Bars. I did set up my moustache bars like on that Rawland, but you can see that the bar ends are still very low, much below the seat height and the brake area of the bars was still a little bit too far forward for me, even with a short 7mm stem. The Porteur bars have much less drop than the m-bars, only 2mm, and they don't swoop forward much at all at the brake area. In order to get the brake area of m-bars equal to where the brake area is right now on my p-bars, the m-bars would have to be mounted to a stem that was 0mm long. Yup, zero. That's how much forward swoop is on the m-bars. The p-bars area also a little narrower than the m-bars and a-bars. Didn't think I'd like that but to my surprise I like it quite a bit. [RBW] Miles on Nifty Swiftys?
What should i expect out of these tires? Right now I've got 2500 miles on them and the rear "tread" pattern is worn off on the main contact patch in the middle. How long do you think the rear will last. The front obviously seems less worn. I usually end up replacing tires around 3k i think. Just don't want to wear them too thin. [RBW] Re: Best Methods for Shellac Application
I change handlebars/tape so often, I've had a lot of experience using this stuff. :D What I've found is that the first coat needs to be pretty thin, and let it dry for a couple hours. Then i come back and start applying heavier coats, but not so heavy it starts to pool or drip, just give it a nice full coat. I let these coats dry but they are usually dry enough within an hour or two. Should be dry to the touch... but touch very lightly, you don't want finger prints. I'll usually give it about 4-6 coats total depending on how the color looks. Now there are two things which I've found very important. After the last coat, let the bars dry for at LEAST 24 hours. They really need to set and harden. If you ride to early you are going to dull the finish. Then, something else I discovered on my own is that you can apply obenauf's to the fully dried bars. Go ahead and polish them up real nice, they'll be slick of course. Let that sit over night and polish off in the morning. You probably want to wear gloves if you are going to ride. I'll then apply it again that evening and let it sit overnight again, polishing off in the morning. You should be good to go after this and what it seems to do for me is soften the shellac to a point that it makes it playable and more durable, but keeps the glossy finish and it extends the life of the shellac preventing it from flaking, which I always had a problem with in the high use areas of the bar. You can apply more obenauf's to the bars every so often to extend the shellac's life. I've been getting pretty good results with this method. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: I think I finally found MY bars
Thanks guys! I hadn't seen this style bar being used much around here so I thought you might like to see. What I didn't realize is how big of a difference it would be compared to the albatross. I just expected the drop to be less. But with them being narrower, about an inch or two shorter in length (bar ends) and the brakes in the "m-bar" position, it gives me a great combination of aggressive (yet still comfortable) and upright chill riding styles. I feel a lot more in control of the bike when riding aggressively in the forward position with the brakes there, especially for urban riding. And with my hands resting on the curve, the support is spread out over a much greater area of my palm. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] I think I finally found MY bars
After going from moustache bars to albatross bars last week, i felt the a-bars were a bit too high (or too low if flipped). When high, i missed the front hand/brake position of the m-bars and the handgrip position felt a little too far back even with the longer stem. When flipped, they were too low, even with the bars raised up really high, and the hand position still felt too far back. So i got some Porteur Bars! Only 2cm of drop. I got my forward hand/brake position back, and even with the 12mm stem it's not too forward because the p-bars don't extend forward like the m-bars do. The p-bar has pretty much all the hand positions of the m-bars when the brakes are mounted at the front, which l like better than mounted back by the bar ends. I was even able to re-use the leather tape from my m-bars. :D The p-bars are a little narrower but they feel great. Now I just want to try to find a suitable bar end mirror since I moved the shifters to the downtube. That way I can remove the mirror from the left side of the bars, freeing up that area. Here's a couple quick iphone pics... http://d2creative.smugmug.com/photos/660282149_XNPAE-L.jpg http://d2creative.smugmug.com/photos/660282154_NBK3N-L.jpg --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Shifter and Handlebar changes
I had a thread last week about Albatross bars that I installed, coming from Moustache bars. The M-bars felt too low and far away, even with a short high stem. Flipping them would have brought them higher but not closer and put my wrists on a funky angle at the front of the bar. The A-bars were comfy, but I was almost a little too upright and hands too close, even with the stem low and pretty long stem. Much more comfortable than the M-bars for relaxed riding. But I felt like my hands were a little too close and just a little too high. So yesterday I flipped the A-bars. Now I had to jack my stem up as high as possible. The hand height feels good but still a tad close. I do like how i pretty much have an m-bar "aero" position now. But wish the stem didn't have to be jacked quite as high as it is. And should I now wrap the bars instead of grips? So today I ordered some Porteur bars because they seem to have less rise/drop than the A-bars, only 2cm. And I'm going to wrap them with leather tape and use regular road levers in the same position as M- bars, instead of these mountain bike levers. I'm hoping to end up with the hand positions of M-bars but more comfortable. Here's a pic of where I was this morning with the upside down A-bars. http://d2creative.smugmug.com/photos/655534929_e7C9n-O.jpg You can see there is quite a drop from center. And notice how high the stem is yet the grips are still lower than the saddle. Then, after all this moving, flipping, etc... I got to thinking. I really hardly ever almost never shift. I'm always in the big ring. Always. And 80-90% of the time I'm in the same rear ring. I use one or two of the other rings sometimes. So I'm wondering... do I really need the convenient location of bar-end shifters? If I switch to downtube shifters I'll tidy things up. Two cables no longer getting in the way of handlebar bags. Two cables that no longer need to be worried about when messing with handlebars. And no longer having two protruding levers from my handlebars that get bumped. So i made the switch. Definitely not as convenient, but not really a convenience that I need. And the bars look much cleaner! When I get my new bars i'm going to plug them with wine corks. Now to go empty a couple bottles of wine. :D I'll get an updated pic next weekend when the new bars are on. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] How far with Albatross bars?
My moustache bars were not all that comfortable for me so I thought I'd try me some Albatross bars on the AHH to get my hands higher and closer to me. I expected to be considerably slower sitting that upright. I did feel a bit awkward at first, riding a bike in that position, but to my surprise I was no slower. On this morning's commute I was puttin along at an easy 17mph which would be my normal speed pre-albatross. So yay! So this weekend which was my first ride with them I did 25 miles. Not a long ride, but plenty long enough to know if a certain type of handlebar is going to work or not. I found them very comfortable the entire ride. Most of the time my hands were in the customary position on the grips, but once in a while I'd grab the forward bend for a bit more aero (if you can call it that) position and that wasn't bad either. Now I had always heard that Albatross bars weren't a great choice for anything over 20 miles, but i felt like I could have gone quite a bit further and been perfectly comfortable. So those of you with these kinds of bars (north road, albatross, etc) how far have you found that you've been able to travel with them before you were wishing you had something else? --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. I've had honjos, berthoud's, sks and freddy fenders in the past and IMHO, the best most nonsense and hassle free fenders are the sks that riv sells. Some others may look snazzier or cost less but overall i think sks are the winners when it comes to every day use. No noise, they seem to last forever, they don't bend or dent, they are priced fairly low, they are very light, they take a lot of abuse, they're easy to get, and they look pretty good considering all that. I use mine on and off (don't always need that much space) and it goes on and off easily, no problems with the velcro. I too opt not to use the handlebar straps since it holds just fine without. The only thing that bothers me is an aesthetic issue... the top flap sags. I put a piece of black cardboard in the map holder and that helps stiffen it. Another great bag from Acorn. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Considering an AHH - Advice sought
My AHH is my favorite bike. I love it for commuting and riding by myself and if I could only have one bike, that would be it. But i just picked up a lugged steel Tommasini Sintesi for weekend club ride type riding. Got it direct from the factory, painted in the color scheme I chose. Great customer service from Tina, their USA rep. It's still not carbon light, but closer. And still has the great ride of steel, especially with their "Air" fork. Here's a pic of it all set up with 28mm conti gatorskins. http://d2creative.smugmug.com/photos/593173887_5jsPP-O.jpg --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Bar-Ends + Inverse Levers?
I already have a set of the Portuguese cork grips from Riv and a set of the Tektro interrupter levers. Are those levers ok or should i use something else? Anything work better? And what's the cleanest way to cut the ends of the grips to fit the barends? On Aug 31, 11:59 pm, cm wrote: > I am a fan of mountain brake levers, cork grips, and bar tape. [RBW] Re: new Riv road bike, and my unwanted input for another
I like this idea, too! I'm building up a weekend roadie bike now and had a HECK of a time finding a road frame that would take 28mm tires! It was pretty much impossible. I finally settled on a Tommasini Sintesi, ordered direct from their factory in Italy. They recommend 25's, but i found that I could just barely squeeze 28's in there. No fenders of course. I'm almost done building it up but here's their website www.ridetommasini.com At least it has lugs!!! :D Here's a pic of my frame from the day it arrived... http://d2creative.smugmug.com/photos/524352096_STQND-O.jpg I would definitely be interested in a new road frame from Riv. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Got the "special" tweed bag on order
William, maybe a work around for you would be a piece of thin clear tubing like is commonly used on derailleur cable that passes under the bottom bracket shell. At least this would cut down on the friction/rubbing. [RBW] Re: another plug for MUSA
I have two pair of everyday riding shorts. One baggy mtn bike short with chamois, and one baggy short made for recumbent riders (i don't ride a recumbent) with no chamois. Both look like regular shorts, plenty of pockets, comfortable and the one with no chamois is even more comfortable off the bike. Top this with one of my lightweight, loose fit merino wool jerseys and I have all the comfort without any of the funny looks. Except for that darn helmet. :P Personally, I'd take either of these options before standing around in sweaty cotton underwear. I just can't do it. No sir, don't like it one bit. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Broken Fender
One time i was stopped at an intersection and when i started to pedal through, something grabbed the rear honjo fender stay enough to pull the fender towards the tire. The tire grabbed the rear fender and folded it up underneath itself, jamming the tire and bringing me to an immediate stop in the middle of the intersection. I had to literally drag the bike back to the shoulder. I had to rip the back half of the fender off to free the wheel so i could ride home. That was it for honjo fenders for me. Cool looking but too thin and flimsy. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group.
