[RBW] WTB or WTT sugino Xd2 double or triple 170mm arms
having some issues with pedal strike and knee creakiness on long rides. currently riding a triple xd2 with 175mm arms and im wondering if going to 170 would help. im 5'10 with an 86pbh. i've read that it makes little difference, but im curious and maybe you have one lying around. ideally, looking for the wide/low double that riv sells and is out of. that would be different enough in a variety of ways to justify this experiment. potentially would be interested in another triple with 170 arms, if the price is super appealing. also, would potentially be interested in trading mine for yours. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Seeking first-hand test-fit ( ride) impressions of the Clem, from other in-betweeners!
it has 26x2.15 big bens. so, definitely a tire on the larger side of the spectrum. i understand the feeling like you should be able to figure it out yourself and not bother someone with questions, but i think this is a situation where it is totally appropriate. specific info about the clem's has been somewhat shrouded, or at least not conveyed in all that clear or efficient of a way. just in my personal experience, ive seen what we initially bought listed as a 49cm when purchased, then a 46cm, and now a 45cm. perhaps the physical geometry has changed with each size listing change, but i dont know how a 45cm bike has a higher standover than a 49cm bike of the same model. anyway, im a truster of what they say on the phone. everything they have ever told me on the phone was accurate, despite website informational wierdness. i think if you have paid for one, you have more than a right to ask a few questions to make sure you are getting what you want. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Seeking first-hand test-fit ( ride) impressions of the Clem, from other in-betweeners!
no personal experience about that size, however, here is a word of possible reassurement. we bought the 45cm prototype clem (maybe sizes have changed slightly) for my fiance who has a pbh of 72-73. at the time of purchase, the website said standover was 71, and they were right. in looking at the pdf, it now seems to suggest that standover on that size now is 74. its possible that the geometry changed slightly, but i sort of doubt it. again, we just have the prototype, but if the geometry didn't change, then the standover is definitely a few cm lower than that which is listed on the pdf... i might verify with riv, but don't second guess too hard. the clem is a super cool bike. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. very well said, Richard. you've an admirable amount of graciousness about the situation, while i have to stop myself from fuming. i am in 100% agreement that there is more to the story. the behavior makes so little sense and is repeated with every transaction, yet the reasons given/excuses change and fluctuate depending on the need. i've done a little bit of internet digging and rereading of my correspondence with him and, for me at least, it points to at least some amount of duplicitousness. someone shouldn't be able to post on twitter as often as he does and not be able to send a refund via paypal or just be in touch. confusing and disappointing indeed. i will probably have a harder time letting this go. Richard, I got a similar set of postponements and stories. The funeral that he had to attend to was weeks ago. I kept asking for a refund or a tracking number and I would get responses that had neither...until no responses at all. The frustrating and suspect thing is that a paypal refund would take the same time to do as writing an email telling me he was too busy to do that. The fact that neither of us got our packages or a tracking number, implies that they were never senteven though he said they were. [RBW] security
I live in LA. First I had a wheelset stolen. Adapted to use the Sheldon technique. Then I had an entire bike stolen by cutting thru the budget u-lock. I learned from that and bought a real u-lock and pit lock skewers. Still had the front wheel stolen. Now I use a kryptonite ulock for the rear which is connected to a beefy cable woven thru the whole bike. I've had no issues since. I think it just looks like too much work. But I still wouldn't leave a Rivendell outside here for more than a couple hours. Then again, just when I thought I had my technique down, someone broke into our house and stole another bike. [RBW] Re: Clydesdale's -- Which Riv Model are you riding?
peace of mind is a valuable thing. i am not over 200#, but i opted for a hunqapillar because i didnt want to worry about loading it up or taking it only on a certain type of terrain. l think the atlantis would've given the same assurance, and likely any riv model would do what i need it to do. You could probably find a totally valid road bike of acceptable stoutness relatively cheap and easily. with rivendell, you get the, relatively rare, option to get something weight/bomb proof, if that's a priority. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Hunq vs Clem
So I have a 54 hunq and my fiancé got the 46 Clem prototype. I can't reeaaallly speak to ride because I don't fit the 46. But here are my observations. Weight-similar Stoutness-similar Ride- hunq is potentially more aggressive. Could be a roadish bike with the right cockpit and wheels...though there are better options for that...but it has that capability. Feels faster. The Clem is a much more laid back, cruiserish, town bike. Upright is way upright. Stays are extra long. I think it could handle anything, but it wont be quick doing those things. Clearances- easier on the Clem, but similar We love both of these bikes dearly. The hunqapillar was bought before the Clem's existed, but For me, having a us made, fully lugged frame was somewhat important. I prefer the geometry of the hunq coupled with the toughness. I don't feel slow on it. I'm not quite ready to go full heavy upright long chainstay crazy big tired out yet. For the fiancé, she doesn't care about road bikes, geometry, clearances etc. she wants a bike that can do what mine does, that she will be comfortable on, will last, looks good, and doesn't cost, to her, an obscene amount of money. Not to imply that caring about those things precludes you from wanting a Clem. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Hunq vs Clem
well, i think there should be a noted difference between slow and fun/lively/nimble/comfortable. i consider my hunqapillar to be fun/lively/comfortable, but it is also slower than most modern road/mountain bikes. knew it going in, love the bike for it. a lot of it is the way i have it set up, and the clem sort of necessitates a cruisery set up, while the hunq can be made more aero, at least. thick tubes, long chainstays, very upright riding position, fat fat tires there is a reason go-fast bikes dont come like this. there is a reason the faster riv bikes dont come like this. i dont think any one of these aspects inherently makes a bike slower, but all together i think, all im trying to say, and the other people who have ridden clems are saying is that it is not a go fast bike. i dont think it was intended to be a bike built to be fast. i dont think anyone at rivendell said that it would be. it excels at what it is said to excel at, and it is lovely and fun to ride. handles loads, works well on dirt/gravel (havent actually taken it on any legitimate mtb rides yet), stable, super comfortable, good looking etc. i think pretending it is gonna be a zippy road bike is not accurate. ive said this a few times in other threads, because we have one and ride it, and each time it is met with a sort of how dare you say it is slow. maybe i should say not as fast, but slow is not objectively good or bad, especially from a brand with un-racer as it's motto. when asked for a comparison, based on my experience, the clem is not as fast as the other rivendell bikes ive ridden, but it does everything else great. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. the prototype clem we have is quite stout. i would venture to say that it is likely at least as thick walled as a lht and maybe even heavier in weight...havent actually weighed anything and im sure big tires are part of it, but it feels not so far off from my hunqapillar, which is a tank in the best way. i've never ridden a lht, but i've also never ridden a dead feeling rivendell, so i don't think youll be disappointed in the swap. however, if you are trying to go lighter, i doubt the clem is any or much. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. i think that the clem and sam are different enough in function/ride and similar enough in price that you should go with the one that suits your needs the most. if you dont think youll want to use it to go fast on roads, but want something sturdy with big comfortable tires, then clem all the way. budget hunqapillar gives a pretty good idea for how the clem feels, but one of less aggressively set up hunqapillars. ive never been on an appaloosa, but i would imagine that there are comparisons there as well. well i just went ahead and asked, since i was asking other questions anyway. via Will Atlantis and Hunqapillar are both straight gauge (not a bad thing!) os x platinum .8mm in the main triangle. The fork is tougher on the Hunqa and the chainstays are thicker... The geometries are different, but the tubing is basically the same. Oh and Hunq forks are made in Taiwan, the rest is made by Waterford, which accounts for the price difference between the two models. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Clem Smith Photos
so, i thought that since there seems to be a lot of people who will be getting their clems or clementines in a number of months, that i would try to post some more photos to make the wait easier. we took delivery of this little guy on friday. it is the 46cm prototype purchased for my 5'1 girlfriend. the fit is perfect, she is over the moon. if you want any other photos, let me know. observations: -it is stout. we havent really pushed it's limits, but it feels hunqapillar sturdy. -i've had a number of old mtb frames built to be riv-like. this bike feels different and distinct from thosebetter than those, and somewhat less aggressive. i dont know if you could go fast on this bike if you tried, but i wouldnt hesitate to take it anywhere with a bunch of stuff attached to it. -5 minutes in, she said she has never been on a bike that felt this comfortable, smooth and stable. -the lugs it has are awesome, and you forget to miss the lugs it doesnt have -initially, i didnt love the curved seat stays. now i get it. i like them -pretty excited this came with the atlas/velocity hub wheels. not sure if those are the cheapy ones mentioned, but i feel like we scored a good deal -anyone know an aesthetically pleasing water bottle cage alternative to the 2fish ones. the prototype has no mounts for them. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ftfsaj418EI/VP091D5J2rI/AKE/6zSEd3dLn6Y/s1600/FullSizeRender%2B%2810%29.jpg https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-fbUxAgKcYbE/VP09617_FVI/AKM/VG0KdOuQdzw/s1600/FullSizeRender%2B%2811%29.jpg https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-MNjfkP6reMI/VP0-FGs7dMI/AKU/Fx7b02VniGY/s1600/FullSizeRender%2B%2812%29.jpg https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-B0lPDAWa0vk/VP0-N2cHarI/AKc/hSh203zL62o/s1600/FullSizeRender%2B%2813%29.jpg https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-RaXSnmUObO8/VP0-UW9Wv9I/AKk/AK_3v5YWOB4/s1600/FullSizeRender%2B%2814%29.jpg https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-QP_OAF1oFx0/VP0-ccfdRLI/AKs/KkIEwO2X89A/s1600/FullSizeRender%2B%2815%29.jpg https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-2s2S0GseK2A/VP0-ja--40I/AK0/cPqRwA6Y66k/s1600/FullSizeRender%2B%2816%29.jpg https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-do4vjvLh_dI/VP0-pVUikUI/AK8/TWsVNpZUKLQ/s1600/FullSizeRender%2B%2817%29.jpg -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Clem Questions
i've been following the progression of the clem, but have no insider information. so, i think, from what i've read it is meant to be an all arounder with some trail (fat tire clearance) and touring (thicker tubing, braze-ons) capabilities. i would venture to say that it isnt meant to be a traditional go fast road bike. i got one for my girlfriend who will use it as an attractive townie that we can put racks and stuff on as i slowly try to ease her into some overnight trips. to add to the discussion -anyone know who is making these? -what the actual tubing specs are? -what the actual chainstay length is, other than long -am i an idiot for not understanding the frame lock clue? -i know im not supposed to harp on it, but does the swoopy seat stay mean less rigidity? -other than the tig welds and paint, what brings the cost down so much on the f+f? -is anyone else sorta turned off by the recommendations to take off good parts and add crummier ones? i mean, if you do that, more power to you, and if it's on the standard build, also understandable from a price point. but it seems kind of like they dont think this bike is worthy of metal pedals or cork grips or whatevereven if you want to put them on yourself. its an odd play for a bike that could be a great entry level riv for people who like the brand and wanted one, but couldnt justify the price. again, im already in and excited, so i dont need convincing. just curious -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. yeah, i have both the steel and aluminum albatross bars. aside from minor weight gain, they are nearly identical and lovely. for around town and almost anything else, the steel will be plenty strong. i also have the shimano mtb levers on 3 bikes with upright bars. zero complaints you can also find them really cheap if you do a little searching. The bike is all set with fenders and racks. The next step is to replace the Noodles with Albatross bars. Here are my questions. First, given that I have absolutely no concern about the weight of this bike, is there any reason NOT to to buy the $68 CrMo Albas that Riv offers? Since this bike will be ridden on roads only, I can't see any reason to spend $90 to buy the lighter and stronger heat treated aluminum version of the Alba. Secondly, I am curious if anyone has used the Shimano MTB brake lever that Rivendell sells. It seems like a good, solid, relatively nice-looking brake lever. I will be using it to pull Tektro 559 sidepull brakes. Thanks for your thoughts. Sean -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Grant sets them straight with letter to editor
well said jim. i think a rational skeptic's eye put to either side shows that a lot of the gear and the clothes and the style is more about taste than black and white better or worse. i definitely wont wear lycra for a host of reasons, but i also sometimes roll my eyes at seersucker knickers or whatever. i think to deny that there is chest puffery, machismo and judgement used to make people buy things they don't really need in the mainstream bike world is silly. i feel it whenever i go into a bike shop. i imagine that the guy in a lesser spandex suit feels it when the guy on a lighter bike and better spandex is next to him. i feel it on bikeforums. sometimes, though rarely, i feel it in rivendell related stuff. the reason i bought a rivendell is because it felt like opting out of the system. getting quality, longevity, attractiveness in the process. i think rivendell, and the numerous companies that it has paved the way for, are really hitting that niche of people who have been turned off by being talked down to, peer pressured into getting something ridiculous (i bought a track bike once marketed as a commuter) and people who now avoid group rides. the fact that you see so many crappy linus bikes around tells me that the major brands have sort of lost touch with the normal bike rider, and people are feeling more and more ok about rejecting that paradigm. i dont need a fast bike, because im not a fast rider. that being said, i like some of them. i'd like to be able to understand some of the newer components and how they work. if i understood them, maybe i would buy one... probably not, but i dont know. i cant learn that information in a comfortable/equal footing sort of way. most bike people i come in contact with have a chip on their shoulder about one thing or another. grant and the rivendell people/website and people on this group have a super appealing, easy going way of explaining things, explaining their motive, explaining the pros and cons, and being transparent about other options out there. ive learned a lot. ive never felt like i was bothering anyone. and hell, if you don't like those explanations, every other bike shop in america sells the other explanation. its not like lycra and carbon are being phased out because of rivendell. the angles make sense. i did a bit of digging and the hillborne and atlantis have the same tube dimensions, or at least that was true in 2010. i didnt think the sams were quite that stout, but that's cool. still curious about the hunq tubing. ive heard ox and kaisei. kaisei was named in the very first iterations of the hunqapillar. it was also listed as being .1 thicker than atlantis tubing. im not sure if that means proportionally, or straight gauge as has been mentioned herelikely all of this information has changed somewhat since it's original writing, right? also, im curious about Tim's seat tube issue since the more recent hunqs take a 27.2 seat post and it seems like his was meant to fit a 26.8, but couldnt even do that. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. honestly, i doubt i kept a receipt for the work that was done. i figured that they must install bottom brackets multiple times a day, and everything was normal. the whole install took 10 minutes. it would be hard to prove and i can't imagine them willingly admitting to it. it seems like if it is all mucked up in there, that i still have options. which is very reassuring and i am sort of breathing normal again. i dont know if i can stand not knowing, so ill probably have it taken out to see what, if anything, is ruined. fingers crossed that you wont be replying to the thread where i ask for frame builder recommendations. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. pb, yeah you're hitting on what i was just wondering about myself. the frame was new, but not straight from the factory. it had been at rivendell for a while. the riv bb install video says that they face+chase before sending out, but that video is from 2010, so i dont know if it still applies... [RBW] bb/thread installation question
preface: im not much of a mechanic. i can install and adjust most allen wrenchy components, but beyond that, i go to a bike shop. so, i got my hunqapillar frame a few months ago and i got a standard issue shimano bb to have installed. took it to a local used bike shop and had the guys put it in, since i dont have the tool or previous knowledge of how to do this. i watched them and it looked like it was taking some work. hard cranking, working it in and out etc. grease was used, but they didnt chase it. it struck me as not the easiest/somewhat rough install, but id never seen one installed before, so what did i know... bike rides fine. bb is smooth, no sounds, no wiggle, no complaints. Cut to me, now, watching instructional videos. i stumble upon a bb install video and it seems like theirs went in much easier than mine. this makes me nervous. i call a higher end and reputable bike shop and tell them this story. mechanic says it might just be that it wasn't chased. it might be that they stripped the threads and if we take the bottom bracket out, one will never go back in again. i ask if what he would do if he was in this predicament. we can check it out, but i would maybe just ride it until you need a new bottom bracket because if the threads are gone, we cant fix it. obviously, this makes me infinitely more nervous and sick to my stomach. what can you tell me? what would you do? how likely is it that this is a deathblow? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. i guess what im wondering is, if the hilsen has proprietary tubes, the atlantis has thick yet standard dbl butted tubes and the hunq has straight gauge, why are they all roughly the same price? obviously, tubing is far from the most expensive part of building a bike, but i assume that the labor intensiveness and lug-workmanship etc. is about the same on those 3 models. maybe not though... ive never built a bike frame -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. so now that i have been doing longer/overnight rides, my fiance is showing interest in joining me. she is a great camper already, though slow to warm to bicycles. id like to start setting up a reasonably capable and attractive (touring) bike for her, but i dont want to go too far into the money pit because i'm not sure how long this interest will endure. at the same time, i cannot really abide a crappy bike, or a bike that is good but looks crappy. so im looking for a middle ground with a final build less than 500$. i have 700x50 big apples on dyad rims. i think the dyad and aeroheat are the same width. no problems with the tires yet, and they are riv approved. that being said, the chart on sheldon brown seems to indicate that they are too large for the dyad rim width. the chart on the schwalbe site says it's no problem as long as they are inflated no more than 45 psi (if im remembering this all correctly.) to my eye, which are more used to smaller tires, they look slightly too big for the rim. at any rate, they work. i ride them and i've had no problems, but i do have a semi anxious voice in the back of my mind about it sometimes. Reason I ask is, I just bought some Big Bens (26 x 2.15) for my Hunqapillar for mixed ride use. Took them out for a first ride a few weeks ago, had a bad crash while on a somewhat but not terribly fast descent on pavement, turning into a curve, though I'm 95% sure it was due to a way under inflated tire (I had a flat about 20 minutes before that on the trails and replaced tube but feel I did not inflate enough for the ride home). Today, went out with properly-ish inflated tires (34 front, 40 psi rear), but still felt like the bike was squirrely on turns and it felt like the bike was going to slide out underneath me on some moderate turns, so I took them pretty slow. But, it was also my first ride back since the crash, so maybe that had something else to do with it. Anyone else have any comments on the handling of these? Am I imagining things and being overly sensitive due to the crash and this is user error? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Paul Jono Hub?
yeah, this is really interesting. i dont need a wheel built or anything, but this hub seems like something nice to have around in case. i dont know anything about this sort of adjustable axle. can anyone testify to potential downsides of this design? It's got an incredibly adjustable axle allowing you to build it up as anywhere from 120-135mm OLD and use a multi-speed freewheel. I happen to have a '70s ish era frame w/ narrow spacing around that is right now limited to single speed/fixie use b/c I don't have a narrower multispeed hub so it's pretty compelling at $105 new from Paul. I'd been stalking a couple vintage used hubsets on the auction site but hadn't pulled the trigger. I figure I can't go wrong w/ a Paul hub but I figured I'd check in with the group! http://www.paulcomp.com/jonohub.html -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: shimano cx-70 canti question
thanks everyone. it appears i am not that much of an idiot/this problem is not uncommon, which is both good and bad news. it seems like some sort of qr or in line adjuster thing is needed to get them to do what i want aaron, i had the tektro 720s previously installed. they worked just fine. they were a little harder to set up and adjust than the shimanos and they werent finished as nicely. shimanos seem to modulate a bit better. still, totally adequate brakes. i would be curious about combining that dia compe quick release with them. could be much cheaper and better working alternative to what we are trying to do... but then there is the back wheel too... garth, i have them on a hunqapillar. your points are well taken and get to the science of what i was trying to understand. that makes a lot of sense. [RBW] Nitto big front rack q / hello
Hey, I'm new here, but this group has already been a great resource. I've been building up my new hunqapillar, and have come to front rack attachment. I've seen posts where the big front rack has been attached without p-clamps. For some reason, those methods didn't really work for me. I ended up attaching the rack without the clamps but somewhat differently than I've seen before. Lower fork eyelets attached to rack via struts attached to the inside of the fork. So here are my questions: Is it a problem to attach the struts to the inside of the fork (about 1cm of clearance on each side between bolt and spoke)? Is it an issue that the points of connection to the fork are the dropout eyelets and the lower mid-fork mounts? Would it be more stable with the second attachment to the higher mounts? Am I stressing anything too much? Etc etc etc. Pics should be attached. Thanks in advance -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Nitto big front rack q / hello
Haha yeah, the idea of having 2 sets of braze ons that close and neither of them being all that useable is quite frustrating. I probably need to just stop fighting it and resign myself to the p-clamps Though that chainring hack looks pretty good. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
