[RBW] Re: FS: An absurd amount of Riv stuff in SF Bay Area
Sorry about the mess. A bit chaotic with the large response. I'm giving priority in dealing with people who are interested in the complete bikes and want the bags to go with it. Apologies if I haven't responded to you yet. I try to keep CL updated, but sometimes there is an update lag on their index. Kevens bag, honey b17, moustache, dirt drop, and axe are gone. Most of the stuff left I am in talks with a local about. Except for the Sunrace thumbshifters. Nobody seems to care about those. I've removed the bags from CL for now since those will probably go with the bikes. On Tuesday, October 15, 2013 10:22:33 AM UTC-7, Brian Campbell wrote: +1 on the Keven's bag. [RBW] Re: Toyo versus Waterford Atlantis
It comes down to your aesthetic sense. If you are not that much into the details of how things look, then it doesn't matter because quality- wise they are identical. But if you do care about the details, then I think you'd have to look at the specific bike to determine what you like more. Totally subjective. I do remember a Grant post mentioning he really liked some of the details on the last run of Toyo Atlantis. Here it is: http://www.rivbike.com/blogs/knothole_post/196 I have both a 2006 and one of these last-run 2010 Atlantii. I like both (a lot), but I overall I prefer the look of the 2006. For example, I like the curvey lugs of the 2006 more. Many people have said they prefer the newer, pointy lugs. Tomato, jitomate. No one there pays too much attention to an old looking slow bike with a bunch of crap on it (ha!). Here I see only beater-bikes with no bags/lights/brooks parked on the street. So I'm wondering how secure I should go. Never leave lights on the bike? Cover up the Rivendell logos? Get one of those locking seat post clamp things? I realize that no bike on the street is ever safe, but I'd like get a sense of what the probability of getting my stuff jacked here is. Oh, and I'm asking for during the day coffee and errand type trips. For BART parking and late-night pub crawls I just bought a $50 craigslist special, but I would really like to be on my Atlantis as much as I can be. [RBW] A Tale of Two Atlantises

[RBW] Re: A Tale of Two Atlantises
Ha, I meant the tale to be illustrated in the photo by how different two Atlantises can be. But I'll bore you with the backstory since you're asking! I bought the black 58cm (700c) Atlantis used, about 3 years ago. It has seen many a configuration - from 32mm paselas to 2.1 nanoraptors, from fenders/racks/baskets to nothing. Lots of bike-geekery fun has been had. This spring, I started looking for a 26 tourer to be used mainly on dirt. I planned on doing a GDR trip this summer (but the universe had other plans). After looking at many options, I was happy to discover with my PBH of 85cm, I could fit the 56cm (26) atlantis. If I could get so much versatility out of one Atlantis, I thought two would be great. I realize I could have gone lighter with a Homer or heavier with Bombadil, but the middle-of-the-road Atlantis suits me well. And like I said, I wanted 26 wheels. So I ordered my 56cm new. To dial it in before any big rides, I have used it as my daily-driver with bags and racks on it, and a fairly upright riding position. The 58cm is currently set up as the fast bike, ie., for unloaded rides. The 56cm feels like a mountain goat, the 58cm a horse. The 56cm has Schwalbe Extremes 2.25. Although I purchased them for being off the grid, I find they work well in the city too. They take bumps really well of course, but they also don't feel slow. These big fat 26 tires spin up/down quickly compared to my big fat 29 tires. Yep - I borrowed the term farkle from motorcycling, meaning accessories. Its a combination of function and sparkle I think. I must have learned it during my brief flirtation with motorcycling, before I came back to my senses and stuck with bikes. :) -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] WTT: Saddlesack Large - Olive for Black?
Anyone happen to have a Large Saddlesack in black but want an olive one? I love my olive one (maybe my favorite single piece of cycling gear!) but the color clashes severely with my greenish blue Atlantis. It hasn't come off my daily commuter since I bought it a year ago, so it looks like a used canvas bag should. Structurally, everything is good. Looking for a black one in similar condition. [RBW] More uses for John's Irish strap
As a belt. As a clothes pin. I'm on week 1 of an international trip where I packed some camping gear including John's Irish straps (2 short, 1 long). My wife forgot a belt, so guess what one strap is being used for? Looks good too. I've also used them to tie down some clothes while it dries on the balcony. Like the stylish swiss army knife of, uh, straps. Actually, I've already used the actual swiss army knife to fix a toilet, a power supply, and cut my nails. [RBW] Re: Man-Topic [Shaving Facial Hair]
I started shaving with a DE safety razor instead of my old Mach 3 a couple months ago and haven't looked back. I also started doing the brush/cream/cup/aftershave thing too. You should checkout the badgerandblade.com forums. There is a lot of great shaving info there, and a really nice group of guys that are very helpful. I definitely sense some harmony between the Riv thing and these simple, old school yet functionally excellent razors. Especially the vintage 1950's gillettes. They are great. I never use it and should probably repurpose it as art instead of clutter. The other is short and soft and works perfectly. For soap I use left-over soap bits. They lather up nicely, and cost zero dollars. We usually have pretty nice soap in my house, so the left-over slivers are fairly couture. I've used the purpose-built shaving soap, but it's really shlunky. Too much goop, not enough lather, and the more expensive it is the worse it feels. I have had a goatee (van Dyke?) for the last 18 years or so, because I got tired of bleeding at the corners of my mouth after shaving. So the overall shaving thing is pretty mild, and your mileage may vary. I do own a double-blade safety razor, and tried to shave with it recently. It sucks. I have owned several straight razors, and shaved with them once or twice. They really shave smooth, but I'd rather look at a full cup of coffee and an egg toast first thing in the morning than a shiny steel straight razor. You wake up it's like, Really? A test? At this hour? I'm not exactly sure where I got them, but one was a Krups, and quite heavy duty. An antique store in North Beach near the Caffe Trieste? Likewise, I'm not sure where they ended up. In the end, I selected a nice German shaver, a Merkur [just like my dad used when I was a youngster], some blades, a nice brush, mug and some cream. [RBW] Re: Grip King/ MKS Lambda pedal spikes
I tried it without a drill. Just screwed them in gently and straight (enough), and once they took hold, then I applied stronger pressure on the socket wrench. About a 6 months and 1500 commute miles later, I've still got 7 of the 8 studs in there. The missing one appears to have been knocked off by a pedal strike, judging by the deep scrapes on the outer edge where the stud is missing. [RBW] Re: MKS Grip Kings vs MKS Touring Pedals
I've also used both extensively on my bikes ( 2 sets of each!) and have settled on the GK's with the studs that rivendell sells. In wet weather both the GK's and MKS touring pedals performed rather poorly, but with just 4 studs per side on the GK's they turn in to great wet weather pedals. The studs are easy to install, no drill required; just line it up straight and screw em in. Other than that I'd say the main difference is the shape. GK's are long front-to-back and narrow side-to-side, while the touring pedals are just the opposite. You might say this makes the GK's less desirable for wide feet or offroad conditions, but I have both those criteria and still prefer them to the tourers overall. [RBW] Re: Serious T:T Factor
Yeah, these tires look absolutely burly. That was part of the appeal for me, but I got them mainly because I plan on doing a lot of offroad (adventure?) touring on them, and the extra air will be nice. They are approaching 650B in diameter but maybe better because there is more air and less wheel. Thats my unscientific assessment anyways. I like how they roll, thats all I really know. Even though I already had a 700c 58cm atlantis, I was happy to find out I could fit the 26 56cm too because I was looking for 26 tourer. So I bought it and I plan on keeping both. The 56cm feels like a mountain goat and the 58cm like a horse maybe, but that has a lot more to do with their current tires/handlebar/racks set up than the sizing. Then there was all the exitement about the Hunqapillar and I for one assumed it replaced the Atlantis. I don't think Riv ever said anything specific and we may have been jumping to conclusions. Anyway, it's good to know Waterford will be building them. Makes perfect sense, and Waterford making a sample 26 wheeled one is probably a formality. The toughest decision will be for your wife, between an Atlantis and a Betty. dougP On Mar 30, 2:43 pm, William tapebu...@gmail.com wrote: The Atlantis' I assume are still selling out slowly, but the Atlantis is still promoted fairly prominently on the front page of rivbike.com. My wife needs a bike, and I have been thinking about a Betty or maybe an Atlantis. I'm not really all that close to being able to afford it, so I've been looking for updates about what frames remain, since the Atlantis stock is trickling away. So, today I called in to ask them about current availability. I talked with Mark. Mark told me something I did not know: The Atlantis is not being discontinued. True, they will no longer be built by Toyo, but if there is no Atlantis in your size, they still will take your $2000 and get you an Atlantis. If they don't have a Toyo built one, they will get you one from Waterford. In my case specifically, I'd need a 47 for my wife. They have no 47 in stock. If I put a deposit on a 47 and waited a few months, they'd get me one from Waterford. Waterford has built the 700c Atlantis's in the past, and has never built a 26 wheel one, so they might have to run a sample, but Mark indicated that was a process that they knew how to manage. Here I was thinking that the Atlantis was being completely phased out, replaced by the Hunqapillar. Maybe I am slow on the uptake. Am I crazy for having gotten that impression? I was thinking that a current Atlantis in my size was going to be like a collectors item. While that may be the case for a Toyo-Atlantis, it is not being discontinued as a model.- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text -- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Serious T:T Factor
I decided to try out the new 2.25 Schwalbe Marathon Extremes on my 56 Atlantis: http://www.flickr.com/photos/southgatephotos/4476856934/ They roll faster than I expected on the road and quite nimble off- road, but that may be the adrenaline shot of a new bike talking. Big fun, nonetheless. -- J. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. The clearance is not bad, with even enough room for fenders. I uploaded some pics with clearance closeup's here. http://www.flickr.com/photos/southgatephotos/sets/72157623736280612/ On Mar 30, 1:28 pm, William tapebu...@gmail.com wrote: Those tires are bananas! [RBW] Re: TCO on an Atlantis?
Even with puny 35mm Schwalbe Supremes and SKS 45mm fenders, I can get toe strike on my 58cm Atlantis if I try hard enough on start-up. This is because sometimes my (size 12) foot placement on Grip Kings is accidentally too far forward initially on start-up. But its not a major issue for me. Like cyclofiend is saying, with a little practice its easily avoidable. I also had 29 x 2.1 Nanoraptors on the Atlantis for a time, and definitely had to be more conscious of it while riding the slow twisty semi-technical stuff. But it was still fun and not a show-stopper. Here's a pic of it with the Nanoraptors on: http://www.flickr.com/photos/southgatephotos/4033477230 Cutting it close, but probably not an issue if i used cleats. (I suppose maybe that's why the problem is called toe clip overlap.) Just for reference sake, it's important to define the following: Clipped In means using some sort of cleated interface to secure your shoes and pedals - SPD, TIME, LOOK, etc... Clipless are the type of pedals that you clip into as above. It is an honorable semantic effort to shift this phrase to Clip in. Even the snowboarders use the phrase Click-in binding... Toe Clips are the cages that extend off the front of the pedal. Once upon a time, we nailed cleats to the bottom of our cycling shoes, so that the rear lip of the pedal cage secured the shoe. Then we tightened down the toe straps. Then we were clipped in. We were young and foolish. Slipping a pair of cycling or street shoes into a Toe Clip is using toe clips All-righty then... One of the quickest ways to get into trouble is to get your foot _inside_ of the front wheel when stopped or at low speeds. Really, that's about the only time it can happen, because you really shouldn't be turning the bars that much unless you are coming down Repack on a Klunker in about 1978 or thereabouts. The best way to compound the problem is to be riding a fixed gear, because, obviously, you can't backpedal and the momentum of the bicycle is driving your foot. The first time I did this (on my Dawes commuter, which has toe clips and fenders), I very luckily dropped my heel, which pointed my toe up, creating plenty of room for the wheel to swing back to center. Then, I seriously panicked and froze up. Luckily, the freezing took place after the fact, and as such did not end catastrophically. I'm a great believer in practicing for disaster, and have since played with this condition a bit to create some muscle memory for the future. Depending upon the tension in your legs, the position of your foot, you can definitely compound the problem if your reaction is to push down harder. It's really a weird feeling when it happens, and your instinctive reaction may not be correct. It's not a bad idea to play with the clearances, so you know beforehand what they are. Sitting stationary on the bike (with a spotter - some of the hardest falls I've had were at 0 mph...) in a doorframe or next to some support, set your foot forward and move the bars to create the problem. - Jim -- Jim Edgar cyclofi...@earthlink.net One Cog - Zero Excuses L/S T-shirt - Now availablehttp://www.cyclofiend.com/stuff Cyclofiend Bicycle Photo Galleries -http://www.cyclofiend.com Current Classics - Cross Bikes Singlespeed - Working Bikes Send In Your Photos! - Here's how:http://www.cyclofiend.com/guidelines -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
