Re: [RBW] Re: PSA: 58cm Ram & 58cm RBW Custom on Los Angeles/OC Craigslist

FWIW, In both ads, the seller specifies the 58cm measurement is center
to center. That would make these either 59 or 60cm sizes as per the
traditional Riv sizing of center to top.

Re: [RBW] Rivs on the Great Divide Route?

2016-02-11 Thread qwerty
Hi Mark,

I rode the GDMBR, last August. Not on a Riv, but a Surly Ogre. I was
riding WTB Nanos 29x2.3". The ride was fine with this setup, but I'd
hesitate to go any narrower than about 2" tire width. The route
offers alternate options in many places where you can avoid the most
technical sections (mainly from Sparwood, B.C. to Roosville, Mt).
Once in Montana, you can also opt for paved highway shoulders, but
you'd forgo the best scenery.

I had small rear panniers along with frame/seat/bar bags. No issues
there either. It's certainly been done with the full complement of
traditional touring panniers, but I was glad to have my setup on the
more technical sections.

It's a great route and I highly recommend it. Let us know how it goes.

[RBW] FS: Quickbeam, 60cm, green

2015-03-16 Thread qwerty
Hi Folks,
I've had a great run with the Quickbeam, but need to severely downsize
and thin the herd. First up for sale is my complete Quickbeam. It's
obviously been ridden a fair amount but remains in very good
condition. Everything's original except for saddle (VO sprung), bars
(Nitto Dirtdrop RM013, 52 cm wide), and brake levers (Tektro Ergo
style). I've also added a White Ind 17/19 freewheel.

Known issues:
Early on, I used a cheap no-name fixed cog with a pretty narrow number
of threads. After a few rides, and one with lots of climbing, the
threads stripped. Lesson learned about cheap fixed cogs! I was able
to subsequently use a freewheel on this same side with no issues. Of
course the opposite side of the hub is fine for either fixed or
freewheel.

There is a small dent in the headtube just below the headbadge. I
think it had to be there originally, because there is no damage to the
paint, and I certainly don't recall contact with anything which would
have caused it. It's only noticeable when the light hits it just
right. See the three photos of the headtube area.

There is another small paint chip on the upper left seat stay. See photo.

Extras include an HPX pump which I rattle can painted to a very close
match. SKS fenders 45mm wide, and a pair of gold colored bottle
cages.

PHOTOS: https://flickr.com/photos/55639583@N04/sets/72157650979316748

I'm asking $1000 (PayPal) which includes shipping to the CONUS.

Re: [RBW] FS: FSA Metropolis Patterson crankset for your Quickbeam

2015-02-25 Thread qwerty
Patrick,
It worked well for me during my short experiment. I didn't notice any
drag in either of the two ratios. I can't really speak about chain
slop since I didn't use it in fixed gear mode (and not sure I would
recommend it for that, given the stresses involved). I can say there
is less drag than I've experienced with my SA S3X, which I'm using
currently.

I was initially hoping to combine this with a 2sd kickback hub, but
this didn't work out for that since it basicly freewheels in the back
pedal which is needed for initiating the gear change in the hub.

Re: [RBW] Re: Wire Routing For Rack-Mounted Tail Light

2014-12-28 Thread qwerty
Hey Anton,

I really like your wiring ideas, and this topic is timely for my
winter project as well. So, I'm curious how you thread your wiring
through those 3mm ID tubing and heat shrink pieces. My light has
those spade lugs for connecting to a Schmidt hub, and I'd like to have
the capability to remove lights and even fenders perhaps at times. A
"hard-wired" job means cutting and then resoldering terminals each
time.

I've found these, but not sure how they might perform in this situation.
http://www.amazon.com/Spade-Crimp-Terminals-Wiring-Connectors/dp/B00976CPWO/ref=pd_sim_indust_4?ie=UTF8&refRID=0M3K5ANMFXRZX02EEV5G

Anyone have experience in building a more modular lighting system
utilizing Anton's tubing ideas?

Oh, and one more question...do you use the same adhesive on aluminum
tubing as heat shrink tubing??

Thanks,
Mike

Re: [RBW] Re: All rounder

2014-01-19 Thread qwerty
I don't think it's been mentioned, but towards the end of the lifespan
of the AR, it morphed a bit from the original/XO style. I recall
ordering my AR back in late summer of 2000, and at that time,
discussing my deliberations with Grant about going with the AR or
waiting a short while for an Atlantis. At that time, the design for a
AR in my size (60cm) was for a 700c wheel size. It was also to be
built by Curt Goodrich. Grant said there wouldn't be all that much
difference in the two, but having the custom Goodrich build, fit,
lugs, etc, would make the bike more unique and special. Once again,
I'm glad I listened to Grant's advice, and my AR is the best bike I've
ever ridden. When I periodically go though my mental downsizing
exercise, the AR is always at the top of my list for keepers.

Re: [RBW] Re: All turned around bout rims [SOS Help!]

2014-01-17 Thread qwerty
For what it's worth, I recently built a wheel set for a Trucker Deluxe
with Rhyno Lites. They built up fine, and are certainly stout and on
the heavy side (what I wanted for a loaded tourer). I also have a
Schmidt hub built with a Mavic X517 for winter riding on this bike. I
have noticed a greater difficulty in mounting and dismounting my
stiff-walled Schwalbe Duremes on the Rhyno Lites. (Takes 2 of 3
levers on the Rhyno Lites, but only 1 lever on the X517s.) I
attribute this difference to either a shallower spoke bed or a
slightly larger diameter on the Rhyno Lites. Sun has had a reputation
of running on the side of slightly larger diameters. Still, I'm
completely satisfied with the Rhyno Lites, at least as long as I can
keep the flats to a minimum.

Shop around, you can buy them for around $50 per rim.

Re: [RBW] Re: Hunqapillar As "True" Mountain Bike?

2013-12-05 Thread qwerty
I have a 54cm Hunqapillar which I initially purchased for it's loaded
touring capability. However, already having too many other bikes that
fill that niche, it's never actually been used for that, and instead
has increasingly filled my (limited) mountain bike niche.

It's been a very capable mountain bike. For me, at least. Though
I've ridden single track trails in Colorado since the 1980s, I've
never owned a bike with any suspension. My hunq performs at least as
well as my old MB3, and probably a little better since it seems the
29er size wheels are slightly better than the old 26ers. The Hunq has
no toe clip overlap, which is important to me for more technical
moves. I originally built it up with dirt drop bars for touring mode,
but I've since switched it over to Albastache bars and greatly prefer
these for climbing and braking positions on trails.

I think tire choice, and terrain or trail type, is your greatest
consideration. It all comes down to your particular preferences or
situation. I use 50mm Schwalbe Dureme tires. Again, originally
purchased for their touring capabilities, but have worked well for me
as a moderate mountain bike tire. Especially, since I typically ride
from home to trails and these tires perform well on anything smoother
than very rocky terrain. The Hunq has clearance for larger tires, so
you have the option for an aggressive 29er tire if you choose. For
me, I no longer seek out the narly trails, and am happy just riding
some of the smoother trails.

I think the only situation where the Hunq wouldn't be recommended
would be where you wanted to keep up with a group of fast riders, all
on suspension bikes, on very technical trails. Since that's not me,
I'm quite happy with my Hunq as my mountain bike.

Enjoyed a fantastic ride and weather (for Nov @ 9,000' elev). Best of
all, I was able to connect with Patrick and get a chance to become a
bit more acquainted. I can confirm that yes, Patrick does indeed ride
shoeless, in late fall, on single track. It was quite amusing to see
the expressions on the faces of riders we passed when they saw us
coming. Old guys, on old-looking bikes, and one with no shoes!

Proof it happened here:

I've had good luck using the traditional moustache bar on bikes that
are somewhat undersized. If still cramped with a dirt drop stem, you
could switch to a technomic for even greater reach.

Re: [RBW] Re: Shifting Issues Question for the Mechanic Types

2013-08-13 Thread qwerty
Hmmm, there are several conflicting and confusing issues here

In your initial posting, you said you rode the bike for two days without
any shifting issues. Then, you later say you had chain suck in the
first 2-5 miles of riding the bike.

Also, I'm sceptical that the high limit screw, which you said earlier
was causing the deraileur to rub the chain and chain guard (i.e. outer
ring, which sounds like a slight adjustment), would lead to a chain
suck insident causing damage to the paint on the chainstay.

One thing's for sure...chain suck sucks! Especially on a new bike.
But don't feel alone, as I doubt there are many here who haven't had
that experience.

Re: [RBW] Re: Trying to decide on handle bars for my Hunqapillar

2013-08-10 Thread qwerty
I have to put in a plug for the new revised moustache bars. They've
quickly become my new favorite bar over drops or traditional moustache
bars. I really like the wider grip and less reach over the old
moustache bars. Mounted at saddle height, they're more comfortable on
longer rides than riding in drops. Also, less need (for me) to use a
shorter stem like traditional Mbars. Actually, they appear to be
very closely shaped to inverted Alba bars, but for some reason I can't
quite put my finger on, I still prefer them over those as well. Oh
yeah, they're great on a Hunqapillar, for off road climbs and
descents. Too bad RIv is already out of stock on these, but I'm
hoping they'll be restocked by next month. In the meantime, if anyone
has a pair that didn't work out for them, hit me up off list!

Hi Kip,

It was great to meet up with you and your family yesterday for the
Viewpoint demo. I've always lusted after those photos of your

in mind for any rides planned for the Jefferson area. I'd welcome the

Besides your weight, you might also want to factor in the tire width

more on a 30mm tire at 85psi than on a 42mm tire at 45psi.

I recently came across this shade of blue on a Hilsen seen here:

Must be a custom color, as it doesn't look like any other shade of
Hilsen blue I've seen. From what I can see in this single picture, I
really like it, and wish I could find another showing the complete
bike. Anyone know more about it?

Rivsters,

Enjoyed the video. Looks like a great place to work. However, I
noticed that John Bennett was left out. Just checked the Riv website,
and sure enough, no John listed in the staff line-up. Mark is now GM.
Seems like a recent change the went unnoticed, unless I misses

Re: [RBW] Re: Cool knobbly tires at BG

2012-07-18 Thread qwerty
Hi All,

I was the lucky buyer of Andrews Rock and Road tires (thanks Andrew!).
I was hoping to use these on my Hunqapilar, and now I'm
reconsidering. Not because I lack clearance for these, but I'm having
the opposite problem. That is, I've become accustomed to the 50mm
Schwalbe Duremes which are just a bit wider than these. I've become
such a fan of how these Duremes work on the mix of road and trail I
ride on the Hunqapilar, I'm afraid the Rock and Roads are just going
to sit unused. So, I'd like to pass these along to anyone else who
can put them to use. I only mounted one of these and did ride them at
all. Same price as the first round...$80 shipped, PayPal prefered.

Thanks
Mike

Re: [RBW] Rivet review?

2012-05-15 Thread qwerty
Hi Brian,

Sorry I can't help out with a Rivet saddle review, but if one of those
doesn't work out for you, you might consider looking for a B.17 in
maroon. Somewhat rare, but they do turn up for sale now and then. I
recently found one on eBay for my recent Hunqa acquisition. (I also
have a Haulin' Collin rack but it resides on my rSogn).

Re: [RBW] Using a Sam Hillborne as a "go fast-ish" bike

2012-03-28 Thread qwerty
Hi Will,

Your component discription is the only time I've heard of anyone
sucsessfully using clamp on downtube shifters on a Sam. Could you
please provide more information regarding this dt shifter setup? My
previous impression was that the vintage clamp bands wouldn't fit the
larger diameter downtube on the Sam.

The lack of down tube shifter brazeons on the Sam has been the
greatest drawback for me in considering this frame. It would be nice
to know of a workable solution for future possibilities..

Thanks,
Mike
