Re: [RBW] Knobbies for 26" Atlantis
My $.02: Thunder Burts are really fast on road, and have a good edge profile for dirt. They wear quickly though. They have a flat profile, so dig in really well in the dirt, but feel a bit sketchy at high speed road cornering. LIke 'em a lot and very happy with them in 650B size! I've never used the Sams, but it looks like they may have slightly more pronounced center knobs, so would therefore be a bit slower on road, with a bit more grab on dirt. I have Maxxis Holy Rollers on mine. I got a good deal on a pair of used ones and I like the way they look. I'm a knobby novice, but admit they roll better on pavement than I expected. [RBW] Knobbies for 26" Atlantis
Anne - I put Rock&Roads on my AHH and loved them for road (they had a pleasing whooshing sound) and dirt and sand ( though in limited amts). Gave up on them because of not being able to solve fender issues. I live in Portland!! Then I got the Continental Cyclecross speed tire- it has a file tread in the middle and knobbies on the sides. ( Riv sells them sometimes) They were great for mixed terrain - I was able to keep up with several riders on full-on Mtn bikes on a ride with mostly dirt trails. I only swapped them out to try the Compass Barlow Pass tires which are now my most favorite ( I know I am fickle). Re: [RBW] Knobbies for 26" Atlantis
Fat Franks are great tires, like a Very Big Apple. But their tread isn't knobby enough for sloppy surfaces; they're great gravel or dry dirt tires. For a Schwalbe knobby, the Smart Sam looks like a winner. Available in 55 and 60 mm widths in 559/26" diameter. Schwalbe's Nobby Nic looks a little faster than the Smart Sam, and the Thunder Burt is even faster (center file tread, outer knobs). I've had a good experience with WTB Mutano tires on my 26er trail bike. They're fast and have enough tread for occasional slop. Mine were listed as 2.4" wide, but they're really more like 2.2" wide on average-width rims.
