[RBW] Re: Cork, Tape, and Shellac
I've only talked to Josh Muir of Frances for a few minutes a couple of times, but I really respect him, and his bikes hit the spot. This may strike other people differently than it does me, but I love that his bikes have had the only Nashbar brakes I've ever seen at a bike show. They also looked, and I believe it may be true, that they were borrowed back from owners who actually rode them. If something horrible happened and I had to replace my bikes (Quickbeam, Ross low trail touring bike and Bontrager hardtail) with a single bike (and magically had the money), it would be with a Frances very similar to Blind Robert's (without the jacked up fender). Or a Matt Chester. Without the magic money, it would probably be a Sam Hillborne. Failing that, I'd just walk... Another thing that he does which I think is really telling about the kind of person he is: When your bike is complete he ships it to you and asks for the remainder of the payment - on the honor system. He says he has only been burned once with a non-paying customer. That's the kind of every-day cool that makes me smile, like Nashbar brakes at NHBS. [RBW] Re: Cork, Tape, and Shellac
By rides big I just mean that it is sized more traditionally with just a little seatpost showing and handlebars close to level with the saddle. On a modern racing frame, I would ride a 60cm bike and in fact the bikes I use at the velodrome are that size; this bike has a 63cm seat tube. For lights, I usually just put my petzl headlamp around the bag and turn it on. I have lots of bikes, and I ride them all, so moveable lights are more useful to me than fixed lights. Though, for touring, I use a dynamo front hub and wired light. I mostly use this bike for commuting and city riding - I do sometimes ride up on the curves and it is comfortable for short distances. I always wear padded gloves, so I don't need much cushioning beyond that. The shellaced cloth tape is very grippy, even when it's wet. The cork grips are comfortable, I suspect they would be even more comfortable if I shortened my stem and sat a little more upright. I tend to ride a bit aggressively in traffic and that usually means leaning forward and pushing a pretty good clip. [RBW] Re: Cork, Tape, and Shellac
Patrick, I will have to dig up the drawing for the ST angle - I am not sure off the top of my head. I think most of the ugly threadless stem/headset setups are because so many of the stems come in ugly finishes. I think matte black looks (generally) terrible on bikes - especially in the areas that I expect to see polished chrome/stainless/alloy. MORE POLISHED THREADLESS STEMS, PLEASE!!! The Brooks is a little forward on its rails, it's just what ended up being comfortable - this is the first bike I have ever had moustache bars on, so it was a bit of a guess on stem length, if I ever bother to switch it out for a shorter one, I will slide the saddle back - for now it's comfortable. The curved stays are just something he (josh muir at frances cycles) does on a lot of his bikes - I think it's just an aesthetic move. I like them, but I doubt they do anything significant to road shock; the fat-ish tires this bike was designed for are much more effective than any relieved stay will ever be! Bill - the fender was not effective once I got up over 14mph or so - I recently changed it out to a full size satin aluminum VO fender. I may crop it again, because I like the look - but it needs to be a good 6 or so longer than the fender in the picture. If I had it to do over again, I would probably consider horizontal dropouts so that removing a wheel for a tire change wasn't so hard. That said, I haven't had a flat yet on this bike. The Rivendell Jack Brown tires are awesome in that regard - ditto for the ruffy tuffy tires which I have used on a few long tours and never had a flat! Ryan - I have been riding fixed gear bikes for 14 years and my knees have never complained (knock on wood), even my days of brakeless riding/skidding in NYC. Thanks for all the kind words, everyone! I followed the instructions on the Riv site and it worked out perfectly. I have to say that it looks better after time than any cork or synthetic tape I have used. The bike is Frances Cycles custom fixtonneur that I had made, sizing is in the Riv/Grant philosophy (it rides big and I like it that way) - this is my city bike/commuter now. I love it. http://www.flickr.com/photos/blindrobert/3729507832/sizes/l/http://www.flickr.com/photos/blindrobert/3729507100/sizes/l/http://www.flickr.com/photos/blindrobert/3728706127/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Cork, Tape, and Shellac
Very nice. How do you like the cork grips with your mustaches? Do you ride much up in the curved part and, if so, is the cork still comfortable?
