James, just a minor observation when I zoomed in. The USB charging port is
positioned on the top of the light, where it would likely be more
vulnerable to letting water in. The Koma instructions tell you to screw the
light into the threaded mounting post so that the port is positioned down.
That way, you can screw it off to recharge it, and screw it back on so that
it will always be in the down position.

head tube lugs, but at least a few did. 

Wasn’t the Frank Jones Sr advertised as the only production bike to use 
those? How often did this happen? How would one tell an all-rounder apart

That bike is fascinating. Pro touches like cable clips, but inelegant cable 
arcs; well worn drivetrain but unused toe straps (twisted under the pedal 
but only once, then anchored with a tiny zip tie); twined and shellacked 
bars but a big tape gap under the lever. Brand new brakes, colored cable 
end, but the cable isn’t tucked behind the brake.

I agree on the bar setup being… not to my taste, but it validates the 2003 
date. That was the peak of the jacked up drop bar era. “If Grant says to 
raise the bars above the saddle, and more is always better… voila, bliss!” 
Someone built it with their old road bike parts, brand new cantis and 
saddle, and never road it again.

Or, an avid cyclist got a Riv custom in 2003 when he was about 50, rode it 
a lot in Michigan until he retired in 2014 when he gave it a Florida 
makeover and used it to pootle around town till now, when he’s getting an 
e-bike.

2003 might be the wrong year all right, but the 1997  All-Rounder I own has 
much plainer lugs and is Waterford-built. And it doesn't have that 
reinforcing collar on the head tube. I think you're right, Joe , that it 
looks like an all-rounder, but maybe one from the late 1990's /early 2000 
when they were semi-custom?

Unless there was some catastrophe of some kind, if it is indeed a full 
custom, I can't see a JB paint job needing a repaint after a year. I am 
pretty sure anyone who orders a custom with the aforesaid expensive JB 
paint job is going to devote a lot of time thinking about the color. I know 
I did. And I know you did, too. If I was a prospective buyer ,I'd sure want 
to know what prompted the repaint

Miles,
The made in USA frame along with nice quality parts and accessories make 
this a fair price in my mind. It is an older bike but well-maintained as 
you say.  I like some of the features listed such as the Nitto seat post, 
Nitto rack, Sheldon's nut on the mudguards, and a Sackville Bag. You could 
throw an offer out to the seller to see if they have much wiggle room.

Get the seller to drop it by a bikeshop, that worked for me on my recent 
bike score. Apparently there were people trying to work stuff out with the 
seller (in my case), but I was the one who said take my money first, and 
made it relatively easy for them...

project, the Nitto drops are on it know. The write-up was to separate the 
wheat from the chaff. Thank you Matt for posting the listing! I've secretly

fork crown. Many of these nice Japanese bikes were never marketed in the US.

The previous owner was kind enough to meet me halfway between here and 
Philly when I bought it, so I'd like to extend the same courtesy.  It's 
been a great bike for my son, but he grew somewhere in the neighborhood of 
4 inches in the last year, mostly in the past few months.  He's now taller 
than me (gulp...) so time to size up!

Hi Taylor — It's a very nice bike, indeed and I understand your rationale 
for selling. 

What I mean is that this bike is fully thought out and spec'd out rather 
than what we understand to be a "stock" Rivendell build. Quills with WI and 
SON hubs, not Velocity-built wheels with Deore hubs; gold moto lites with 
Paul levers rather than Shimano Vs and levers; Silver crank set up 1x with 
SRAM Eagle rather than a Silver double, Deore RD and 9sp cassette. Deluxe 
and US-made stuff everywhere. 

It surprised me that it was up for sale after so much thought, work, 
planning and parts acquisition. Plenty here that is hard to find!

the intent of being a daily hauler of live cargo (our little one) hence the 
1x build (if that is what is meant by "a specific build"). 

Joe hit it on the nose–one person in this equation was more invested in 
this project than the other. In addition, as has been the case for many 
others, the pandemic changed our commuting needs. As such, we've decided to 
sell this bike as well as a few others since we have a number of 
kid-related needs. A friend who has a ton of experience selling bikes 
offered to help.

timing for my pocketbook is extremely poor. Medical bills + cargo bike 
build. I also think the price is a tad high, or at least I did until I saw 
what the smaller frameset just sold for. The build is nice but it's not 
like it's dripping with high end MUSA bits. It sure is pretty tho...  like, 
I want to ask it to dinner pretty.

It's a weird* frame, too. The top and bottom head lugs don't match, which 
is a story I used to know but can't remember now. But if you want that 
frame in those colors this is one of the very few. Someone will build it 
and and have a great time.

we be buying now that we can ride the crap out of and double our money 
after 10 years?  :)

It's spendy all right...but getting a new custom is 5K for the base price 
and in Grant's Blug prior to his latest he said that there will be a 
year-long moratorium on customs. You can get yourself put on the list if 
you fill out the form , but it doesn't sound like a deposit is required 
until they contact you. Could be that the price could go up , but that's 
just me guessing

Francisco and looked just liked that, a yellow/gold/mustard Road or
